RESUMO
Colorectal cancer is ranked to have high mortality among most malignancies worldwide. In the adult population, the seroprevalence rates of the John Cunningham virus (JCV) range from 70% to 90%. Recently the association for JCV in many malignant tumours have been reported worldwide, including colonic and rectum cancers. Interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) can promote tumour growth where it is abundant in the tumour microenvironment, and its up-regulation is considered a poor prognostic feature in different types of solid tumours, including colon malignancies. One hundred tissue biopsies belonged to 50 patients with colorectal cancers and 30 benign colonic tumour patients, and 20 colorectal control tissues were enrolled in this study. JCV was detected via chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH), while IL-1 beta was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The recorded data showed that 21 out of 50 (42%) tissue samples with colorectal carcinoma showed positive CISH reactions for JCV DNA in this study. The benign colorectal tumours group revealed positive signals in 2 out of 30 tissues representing 6.7% of this group. Lastly, no control tissues showed positive signals for the JCV -CISH test. The positive signals of IL-1 Beta-IHC detection were found in 26 out of 50 (52 %) colorectal carcinoma tissues, while in the benign colorectal tumour was 43.3% (13 out of 30) and in AHC was 20% (4 out of 20 tissues). The high rates of JCV infection in this group of Iraqi patients with colonic adenocarcinoma in concordance with IL-1 Beta expression could play an essential role in the development and progression of these malignant tumours along with benign colonic tumours. To analyze the concordant expression of IL-1 beta gene and JCV in issues from a group of Iraqi patients with colonic adenocarcinomas.

The effectiveness of superheated steam (SHS) as an alternative, eco-friendly treatment method to modify the surface of pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) for biocomposite applications was investigated. The aim of this treatment was to improve the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the polymer. The treatment was carried out in an SHS oven for different temperatures (190â»230 °C) and times (30â»120 min). Biocomposites fabricated from SHS-treated PALFs and polylactic acid (PLA) at a weight ratio of 30:70 were prepared via melt-blending techniques. The mechanical properties, dimensional stability, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the biocomposites were evaluated. Results showed that treatment at temperature of 220 °C for 60 min gave the optimum tensile properties compared to other treatment temperatures. The tensile, flexural, and impact properties as well as the dimensional stability of the biocomposites were enhanced by the presence of SHS-treated PALF. The SEM analysis showed improvement in the interfacial adhesion between PLA and SHS-treated PALF. XRD analysis showed an increase in the crystallinity with the addition of SHS-PALF. The results suggest that SHS can be used as an environmentally friendly treatment method for the modification of PALF in biocomposite production.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To assess the quality of life (QoL) in a representative sample of patients with vestibular schwannoma and to ascertain the differences in outcomes associated with distinct management strategies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with vestibular schwannoma attending a tertiary referral center were asked to complete the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Brain Questionnaire, which assesses QoL in 5 domains: physical, social, emotional and functional, and a brain cancer-specific domain. Results were analyzed in the overall cohort and in surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and conservative management subgroups. The relationship between patient clinical characteristics and QoL outcome also was analyzed by univariable and multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: There were 83 survey respondents with an average age of participants of 57 years and a mean follow-up of 4.9 years. QoL was statistically significantly lower in the surgery subgroup within the Physical QoL domain (P = 0.039); however, there was no significant difference in overall QoL between the 3 subgroups of surgery, radiosurgery, and conservative management (P = 0.17). A poor QoL outcome was associated with the number of symptoms at diagnosis, greater tumor size, and a surgical management strategy. CONCLUSIONS: The QoL within this patient cohort was extremely variable in each management group, mirroring the heterogeneous natural history of this disease process. QoL in patients with vestibular schwannoma cannot be predicted based on management strategy alone, but a poor QoL outcome is more likely in patients with larger, symptomatic tumors that are treated surgically.
