RESUMO

Lead-free K0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (KBT) ceramics with high density (~5.36 g/cm3, 90% of X-ray density) and compositional purity (up to 90%) were synthesized using a solid-state reaction method. Strongly condensed KBT ceramics revealed homogenous local microstructures. TG/DSC (Thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry) techniques characterized the thermal and structural stability of KBT. High mass stability (>0.4%) has proven no KBT thermal decomposition or other phase precipitation up to 1000 °C except for the co-existing K2Ti6O13 impurity. A strong influence of crystallites size and sintering conditions on improved dielectric and non-linear optical properties was reported. A significant increase (more than twice) in dielectric permittivity (εR), substantial for potential applications, was found in the KBT-24h specimen with extensive milling time. Moreover, it was observed that the second harmonic generation (λSHG = 532 nm) was activated at remarkably low fundamental beam intensity. Finally, spectroscopic experiments (Fourier transform Raman and far-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR)) were supported by DFT (Density functional theory) calculations with a 2 × 2 × 2 supercell (P42mc symmetry and C4v point group). Moreover, the energy band gap was calculated (Eg = 2.46 eV), and a strong hybridization of the O-2p and Ti-3d orbitals at Eg explained the nature of band-gap transition (Γ â†’ Γ).

RESUMO

We demonstrate a series of organic-inorganic nanocomposite materials combining the mesoporous silica (PS) and benzil (BZL) nanocrystals embedded into its nanochannels (6.0-13.0 nm in diameter) by capillary crystallization. One aims to design novel, efficient nonlinear optical composite materials in which inactive amorphous host PS-matrix provides a tubular scaffold structure, whereas nonlinear optical functionality results from specific properties of the deposited guest BZL-nanocrystals. A considerable contraction of the BZL melt during its crystallization inside the silica nanochannels results in a formation of the texture consisting of (221)- and (003)-oriented BZL nanoclusters (22 nm in length), separated by voids. Specificity of the textural morphology similarly to the spatial confinement significantly influences the nonlinear optical features of composite PS:BZL materials being explored in the second harmonic generation (SHG) experiment. The light polarization anisotropy of the SHG response appears to be considerably reduced at channel diameters larger than 7 nm apparently due to the multiple scattering and depolarization of the light on randomly distributed and crystallographically oriented BZL-nanoclusters. The normalized SHG response decreases nonlinearly by more than one order of magnitude as the channel diameter decreases from 13.0 to 6.0 nm and vanishes when spatial cylindrical confinement approaches the sizes of a few molecular layers suggesting that the embedded BZL clusters indeed are not uniformly crystalline but are characterized by more complex morphology consisting of a disordered SHG-inactive amorphous shell, covering the channel wall, and SHG-active crystalline core. Understanding and controlling of the textural morphology in inorganic-organic nanocrystalline composites as well as its relationships with nonlinear optical properties can lead to the development of novel efficient nonlinear optical materials for the light energy conversion with prospective optoelectronic and photonic applications.

RESUMO

A series of new push-pull chromophores based on a combined cyclopenta[c]thiophene-4,6-dione (ThDione) acceptor, N,N-dimethylaniline, N-piperidinylthiophene or ferrocene donors, and ethylene or buta-1,3-dienylene π-linkers has been designed and synthesized. Utilizing one or two ThDione acceptors afforded linear or branched push-pull molecules. Experimental and theoretical study of their fundamental properties revealed thermal robustness up to 260 °C, a electrochemical/optical HOMO-LUMO gap that is tunable within the range of 1.47-2.19/1.99-2.39 eV, and thorough elucidation of structure-property relationships. Compared to currently available portfolio of heterocyclic electron-withdrawing units, ThDione proved to be a powerful and versatile acceptor unit. It imparts significant intramolecular charge transfer and polarizes the π-system, which results in enhanced (non)linear optical response.

RESUMO

Fourteen new D-π-A push-pull chromophores based on two isomeric thienothiophene donors and seven acceptors of various electronic natures have been designed and conveniently synthesized. In contrast to known thienothiophene push-pull molecules, the prepared small chromophores proved to be organic materials with easily tunable thermal, electrochemical and (non)linear optical properties. It has also been shown that small structural variation may result in significantly improved/varied fundamental properties. Very detailed structure-property relationships were elucidated within the systematically developed series of push-pull molecules, which may serve as a useful guide in designing new D-π-A molecules based on fused thiophene scaffolds.

RESUMO

The article is about a novel material for application in optoelectronic devices: mesoporous silica in the form of thin films with vertically aligned channels containing anchored propyl-copper-phosphonate functional groups. We described a synthesis route and carried out characterization of the structure to obtain its nonlinear optical (NLO) properties (second and third order harmonic generation). A quasi phase transition was found in the material resulting from modification of the functional group content. We also demonstrated that it is possible to modify NLO susceptibilities by tuning the distance between active polar units.
