We hypothesized that the addition of milk fat globule membranes (MFGMs) to infant formula would improve its lipolysis, making it more similar to human milk (HM) and superior to commercial infant formula (CIF) in fat digestion. Therefore, we prepared two model infant formulas (MIFs) by adding MFGMs to dairy ingredients in different ways and compared their fat digestion behavior with those of HM and CIF. MFGMs were added alone (MIF1) and with other milk-based materials (MIF2) before homogenization. The addition of MFGMs reduced the flocculation of lipids and proteins in the gastric phase and promoted lipolysis in the intestine phase. The amount of free fatty acids released followed the order of HM > MIF1 > CIF ≥ MIF2. After digestion, the number of different glyceride species between each sample and HM reached 64 (MIF1), 73 (MIF2), 67 (CIF1), and 72 (CIF2). In conclusion, the fat digestion of MIF1 had the highest similarity with HM.

Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is an important crop for food security in semiarid and arid regions due to its high tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses and its good performance in marginal lands with relatively low fertility. To deeply understand the interrelationship among sorghum genotype, environment, sowing dates, and densities in the spring sowing early maturing (SSEM) areas of China, and to provide a basis for specifying scientific and reasonable cultural practices, a two-year field experiment was conducted with six popular varieties at six locations. Combined ANOVA showed that the yield difference between years was significant (P<0.05); the yield differences among locations, varieties, sowing dates, and densities were all highly significant (P<0.01). The variety effect was mainly influenced by location, year, sowing dates and their interactions. The sowing effect was mainly influenced by the location, year, variety and their interactions The plant density effect was significantly influenced by location and location-year interaction. Of the contributions of various test factors to yield variance, the location was the largest one (38.18%), followed by variety (12.31%), sowing date (1.53%), density (0.54%), and year (0.09%), with all these single factors accounting for 52.65%. The total contribution of all two-factor interactions accounted for 14.24%, among which the greatest contributor was location-hybrid interaction (8.07%). The total contribution of all three-factor interactions accounted for 14.58%, of which year-location-hybrid interaction was the largest contributor (9.02%). Sowing dates significantly affected model of sorghum growth and development, especially during the late period. The key climatic factors affecting yield were different among the six locations. Weather factors during the grain filling stages contributed much more than those during the early stage to grain yield. Mid-maturing varieties are recommended other than early maturing varieties for the SSEM areas even when late sowing occurs. Sowing as early as possible is recommended for areas with very short frost-free period (Harbin, Tongliao, and Datong). Proper delayed sowing is recommended for areas with a relative long frost-free period (Gongzhuling, Baicheng and Zhangjiakou). This research will provide a conducive reference for sorghum production in similar areas.

Sweet sorghum is a C4 crop that can be grown for silage forage, fiber, syrup and fuel production. It is generally considered a salt-tolerant plant. However, the salt tolerance ability varies among genotypes, and the mechanism is not well known. To further uncover the salt tolerance mechanism, we performed comparative transcriptome analysis with RNA samples in two sweet sorghum genotypes showing different salt tolerance abilities (salt-tolerant line RIO and salt-sensitive line SN005) upon salt treatment. These response processes mainly focused on secondary metabolism, hormone signaling and stress response. The expression pattern cluster analysis showed that RIO-specific response genes were significantly enriched in the categories related to secondary metabolic pathways. GO enrichment analysis indicated that RIO responded earlier than SN005 in the 2 h after treatment. In addition, we identified more transcription factors (TFs) in RIO than SN005 that were specifically expressed differently in the first 2 h of salt treatment, and the pattern of TF change was obviously different. These results indicate that an early response in secondary metabolism might be essential for salt tolerance in sweet sorghum. In conclusion, we found that an early response, especially in secondary metabolism and hormone signaling, might be essential for salt tolerance in sweet sorghum.

Lactational changes in macronutrient content, lipid profile, fatty acid composition, and positional distribution of human breast milk were investigated in this study. A total of 378 milk samples of six different lactation periods, including 0‒5, 6‒14, 15‒30, 31‒90, 91‒180, and 181‒360 days, were collected cross-sectionally from healthy lactating women in Zhejiang, China. As lactation progressed from 0‒5 to 15‒30 days, the lipid content and the percentages of C10:0, C12:0, C14:0, C18:2n-6, and C18:3n-3 increased significantly, while the protein concentration and the proportions of phospholipids, cholesterols, C16:0, C18:1n-9, C24:1n-9, C20:4n-6, C22:4n-6, C22:5n-3, and C22:6n-3 decreased notably. When lactation was further extended to 181‒360 days, the protein content continued to decrease, and the percentages of C12:0 and C14:0 continued to increase, whereas the levels of other tested nutrients remained stable. Although the triacylglycerol positional distributions of some fatty acids underwent significant lactational variations, C14:0, C16:0, C24:1n-9, C22:4n-6, C22:5n-3, and C22:6n-3 were located mainly at the sn-2 position, while C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, and C18:3n-3 were primarily distributed at the sn-1,3 positions. Compared with human breast milk reported in Western countries, samples in our study demonstrated higher percentages of C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3, C20:4n-6, and C22:6n-3, but lower proportions of C12:0, C14:0, and C18:1n-9. The results from this study indicated a nutritional composition different from that of the Western countries and may provide useful data for the development of infant formulas closer to Chinese breast milk in terms of the fatty acid composition and its specified positional distribution on triglyceride structure.
