Purpose: Sirolimus has emerged as a safe and effective treatment for complicated lymphatic malformations (LMs). We aim to prove the effectiveness and safety of sirolimus as a therapeutic option for patients with complicated LMs. Methods: Fifty-eight patients with complicated LMs treated with sirolimus for at least 6 months at multicenter between July 2018 and January 2023 were enrolled. All patients were administered oral sirolimus starting at 0.8 mg/m2 every 12 hours, with target serum concentration levels of 8-15 ng/mL. Evaluation for clinical symptoms and LMs volume on MRI were reviewed to assess treatment response and toxicities. Evaluation of disease response was divided into 3 values: complete response, partial response (significant, moderate, and modest), and progressive disease. Results: The median age at the initiation of sirolimus treatment was 6.0 years (range, 1 month-26.7 years). The median duration of treatment was 2.0 years (range, 6 months-4.4 years). The most common lesions were head and neck (25 of 58, 43.1%). Forty-six patients (79.3%) demonstrated a reduction in LMs volume on MRI or improvement of clinical symptoms including 2 complete responses. The young age group and the patients who underwent few prior therapies showed better responses. None of the patients had toxicities attributable to sirolimus with a Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events grade of ≥3. Conclusion: Oral sirolimus treatment brought a successful outcome without severe adverse effects. It could be the first-line therapy, especially for the young age group of complicated LMs, and an additional option for refractory lesions that did not respond to conventional treatment.

Osteolytic bone lesion is a major cause of decreased quality of life and poor prognosis in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), but molecular pathogenesis of the osteolytic process in MM remains elusive. Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand (FLT3L) was reported to be elevated in bone marrow and blood of patients with advanced MM who often show osteolysis. Here, we investigated a functional link of FLT3L to osteolytic process in MM. We recruited 86, 306 and 52 patients with MM, acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), respectively. FLT3L levels of patients with hematologic malignancies were measured in bone marrow-derived plasma and found to be significantly elevated in MM than in AML or ALL that rarely show osteolysis. FLT3L levels were further elevated in MM patients with bone lesion compared with patients without bone lesion. In vitro cell-based assays showed that the administration of FLT3L to HEK293T, HeLa and U2OS cells led to an increase in the DKK1 transcript level through STAT3 phosphorylation at tyrosine 705. WNT reporter assay showed that FLT3L treatment reduced WNT signaling, and nuclear translocation of ß-catenin. These results collectively show that FLT3L-STAT3-DKK1 pathway inhibits WNT signaling-mediated bone formation in MM, which can cause osteolytic bone lesion. Finally, transcriptomic profiles revealed that FLT3L and DKK1 were predominantly elevated in the hyperdiploidy subtype of MM. Taken together, FLT3L can serve as a promising biomarker for predicting osteolytic bone lesion and also a potential therapeutic target to prohibit the progression of osteolytic process in MM with hyperdiploidy.

A newborn presented with a rare combination of esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) and duodenal atresia (DA), which was successfully managed using minimally invasive surgical techniques. The patient was a 1-day-old male for whom passing a feeding tube was infeasible and who had a double bubble sign on radiography. The neonate underwent a thoracoscopic ligation of the tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) and a laparoscopic duodeno-duodenostomy on the same day, resulting in stabilized vital signs. Ten days after the initial operation, a thoracoscopic esophago-esophagostomy was successfully performed. The patient demonstrated full feeding capability and normal weight gain after the surgeries. The co-occurrence of EA/TEF and DA is a rare and complex anomaly. This case indicates that minimally invasive techniques can effectively manage this condition.

Drought and nutrient input are two main global change drivers that threaten ecosystem function and services. Resolving the interactive effects of human-induced stressors on individual species is necessary to improve our understanding of community and ecosystem responses. This study comparatively assessed how different nutrient conditions affect whole-plant drought responses across 13 common temperate grassland species. We conducted a fully factorial drought-fertilization experiment to examine the effect of nutrient addition [nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and combined NP] on species' drought survival, and on drought resistance of growth as well as drought legacy effects. Drought had an overall negative effect on survival and growth, and the adverse drought effects extended into the next growing season. Neither drought resistance nor legacy effects exhibited an overall effect of nutrients. Instead, both the size and the direction of the effects differed strongly among species and between nutrient conditions. Consistently, species performance ranking under drought changed with nitrogen availability. The idiosyncratic responses of species to drought under different nutrient conditions may underlie the seemingly contradicting effects of drought in studies on grassland composition and productivity along nutrient and land-use gradients-ranging from amplifying to dampening. Differential species' responses to combinations of nutrients and drought, as observed in our study, complicate predictions of community and ecosystem responses to climate and land-use changes. Moreover, they highlight the urgent need for an improved understanding of the mechanisms that render species more or less vulnerable to drought under different nutrients.

This study investigates the structural phase and dielectric properties of poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P[VDF-TrFE]) thin films grown via atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma deposition using a mixed polymer solution comprising P[VDF-TrFE] polymer nano powder and dimethylformamide (DMF) liquid solvent. The length of the glass guide tube of the AP plasma deposition system is an important parameter in producing intense cloud-like plasma from the vaporization of DMF liquid solvent containing polymer nano powder. This intense cloud-like plasma for polymer deposition is observed in a glass guide tube of length 80 mm greater than the conventional case, thus uniformly depositing the P[VDF-TrFE] thin film with a thickness of 3 µm. The P[VDF-TrFE] thin films with excellent ß-phase structural properties were coated under the optimum conditions at room temperature for 1 h. However, the P[VDF-TrFE] thin film had a very high DMF solvent component. The post-heating treatment was then performed on a hotplate in air for 3 h at post-heating temperatures of 140 °C, 160 °C, and 180 °C to remove DMF solvent and obtain pure piezoelectric P[VDF-TrFE] thin films. The optimal conditions for removing the DMF solvent while maintaining the ß phases were also examined. The post-heated P[VDF-TrFE] thin films at 160 °C had a smooth surface with nanoparticles and crystalline peaks of ß phases, as confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and XRD analysis. The dielectric constant of the post-heated P[VDF-TrFE] thin film was measured to be 30 using an impedance analyzer at 10 kHz and is expected to be applied to electronic devices such as low-frequency piezoelectric nanogenerators.

Cerebral microvasculature of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibits reduced capillary diameter and impaired blood flow. Molecular mechanisms of ischemic vessels affecting AD progressions have not been well established yet. In the present study, we found that in vivo triple (PS1M146V, APPswe, tauP301L) transgenic AD mouse model (3x-Tg AD) brains and retinas showed hypoxic vessels expressing hypoxyprobe and hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). To mimic in vivo hypoxic vessels, we used in vitro oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD)-treated endothelial cells. HIF-1α protein was increased through reactive oxygen species (ROS) producing NADPH oxidases (NOX) (i.e., Nox2, Nox4). OGD-induced HIF-1α upregulated Nox2 and Nox4, demonstrating crosstalk between HIF-1α and NOX (i.e., Nox2, Nox4). Interestingly, NLR family pyrin domain containing 1 (NLRP1) protein was promoted by OGD, and such effect was blocked by downregulation of Nox4 and HIF-1α. Knockdown of NLRP1 also diminished OGD-mediated protein levels of Nox2, Nox4, and HIF-1α in human brain microvascular endothelial cells. These results showed interplay among HIF-1α, Nox4 and NLRP1 in OGD-treated endothelial cells. Expression of NLRP3 was not detected well in hypoxic endothelial cells of 3x-Tg AD retinas or OGD-treated endothelial cells. Instead, hypoxic endothelial cells of 3x-Tg AD brains and retinas markedly expressed NLRP1, the adaptor molecule apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), caspase-1, and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß). Taken together, our results suggest that AD brains and retinas can trigger chronic hypoxia especially in microvascular endothelial cells, consequently leading to NLRP1 inflammasome formation and upregulation of ASC-caspase-1-IL-1ß cascades. In addition, NLRP1 can stimulate HIF-1α expression and form HIF-1α-NLRP1 circuit. These consequences might further destroy vascular system in AD.

Purpose: We analyzed the timing of inguinal hernia repair in premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) considering recurrence, incarceration, and other complications. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective review, premature infants (<37 weeks) in the NICU diagnosed with inguinal hernia between 2017 and 2021 were segregated into 2 groups based on the timing of inguinal hernia repair. Results: Of 149 patients, 109 (73.2%) underwent inguinal hernia repair in the NICU and 40 (26.8%) after discharge. Preoperative incarceration did not differ, but complications with recurrence and postoperative respiratory insufficiency were higher in the NICU group (11.0% vs. 0%, P = 0.029; 22.0% vs. 5.0%, P = 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that the significant factors affecting recurrence were preoperative ventilator dependence and body weight of <3,000 g at the time of surgery (odds ratio [OR], 16.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.45-82.69; P < 0.01 and OR, 9.97; 95% CI, 1.03-95.92; P = 0.04). Conclusion: Our results suggest that when premature infants are diagnosed with inguinal hernia in the NICU, inguinal hernia repair after discharge may decrease the odds of recurrence and postoperative respiratory insufficiency. In patients who have difficulty delaying surgery, it is thought that surgery should be performed carefully in a ventilator preoperatively or weighed <3,000 g at the time of surgery.

TRAIP is a key factor involved in the DNA damage response (DDR), homologous recombination (HR) and DNA interstrand crosslink (ICL) repair. However, the exact functions of TRAIP in these processes in mammalian cells are not fully understood. Here we identify the zinc finger protein 212, ZNF212, as a novel binding partner for TRAIP and find that ZNF212 colocalizes with sites of DNA damage. The recruitment of TRAIP or ZNF212 to sites of DNA damage is mutually interdependent. We show that depletion of ZNF212 causes defects in the DDR and HR-mediated repair in a manner epistatic to TRAIP. In addition, an epistatic analysis of Zfp212, the mouse homolog of human ZNF212, in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), shows that it appears to act upstream of both the Neil3 and Fanconi anemia (FA) pathways of ICLs repair. We find that human ZNF212 interacted directly with NEIL3 and promotes its recruitment to ICL lesions. Collectively, our findings identify ZNF212 as a new factor involved in the DDR, HR-mediated repair and ICL repair though direct interaction with TRAIP.

The effect of freezing raw meat on the quality characteristics of beef jerky was evaluated in the present study. Jerky was made using different types of raw beef (fresh, frozen, and frozen-thawed) with different curing times (6 h and 12 h). Frozen-thawed beef had a lower moisture content than fresh or frozen beef due to higher exudate loss (P < 0.05). Jerky made using frozen and frozen-thawed beef showed lower drying yield and higher shear force than jerky prepared using fresh beef (P < 0.05). Freezing raw beef decreased the fat content and increased the redness, yellowness, chroma, and hue values of jerky (P < 0.05). The microstructure of beef jerky was showed to increase the deformation and contraction of muscle fibers due to freezing. Longer curing times increased the moisture content of jerky made using frozen meat (P < 0.05). Jerky made using frozen or frozen-thawed meat was tough due to excessive fat and moisture loss.

Effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contain various organic micropollutants, some of which can exert negative effects on the quality of receiving waters or drinking water sources. This study monitored two full-scale WWTPs in Korea for the occurrence and removal of bioactive chemicals for a one-year period using a battery of in vitro bioassays as a complementary approach to chemical analysis. Bioassays covering different endpoints were employed, such as hormone receptor activation (AR and ERα), xenobiotic metabolism (PAH and PXR), oxidative stress response (Nrf2), and cytotoxicity. The WWTP influents showed AR, ERα, and PAH activities at ng/L - µg/L and PXR and Nrf2 activities at µg/L - mg/L as bioanalytical equivalent concentrations of a reference compound for each bioassay. These bioactivities decreased along with the WWTP treatment train, with significant removals achieved by the secondary biological treatment processes. Cytotoxicity was observed only for some municipal wastewater (M-WWTP) influents but was below the limit of quantification for most cases. The influent and effluent bioactivities observed in this study were mostly comparable to those reported in other WWTPs in the literature. Comparison of the bioactivities with the effect-based trigger (EBT) values indicates that the impact of WWTP effluents on receiving water quality was low for most endpoints. For Nrf2, however, further investigation is required to evaluate the observed high bioactivities compared with the current EBT. The observed ERα activity could partly be explained by the presence of some steroid estrogens. Overall, our results contribute to an important database for the concentrations and removal efficiencies of bioactive chemicals in WWTPs and demonstrate bioassays as a useful tool for urban water quality monitoring.

This study aimed to compare the similarities, physicochemical properties, and muscle fiber characteristics of porcine skeletal muscles. Fourteen types of muscles were collected from nine pig carcasses at 24 h post-mortem and classified by muscle architecture into two main groups, namely parallel and pennate. The muscles were further differentiated into three subtypes per group. These included fan-shaped, fusiform, and strap for the parallel group, and unipennate, bipennate, and multipennate for the pennate group. Parallel-fibered muscles, which were composed of larger I, IIA, IIX, and IIXB fibers and a lower density of IIA fibers, showed higher redness and yellowness values than pennate-fibered muscles (p<0.05). However, the relative fiber area was not significantly different between the parallel and pennate groups (p>0.05). In the subtypes of parallel architecture, the strap group showed lower moisture content and higher redness values than the other subtypes and had considerably higher amounts of oxidative fibers (I and IIA; 72.3%) than the fan-shaped and fusiform groups (p<0.05). In the pennate group, unipennate showed comparatively lower moisture content and higher lightness than other pennate subtypes and was composed of smaller I, IIA, and IIX fibers than the bipennate and multipennate groups (p<0.05). Finally, a different trend of muscle clustering by hierarchical cluster analysis was found between physicochemical properties and muscle fiber characteristics. These results suggest that the physicochemical properties and muscle fiber characteristics of porcine skeletal muscles are not significantly dependent on morphological properties but are rather related to the intrinsic properties of the individual muscles.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a global issue, affecting public health and water industries in numerous countries. Because funds for monitoring HABs are limited, model development may be an alternative approach for understanding and managing HABs. Continuous monitoring based on grab sampling is time-consuming, costly, and labor-intensive. However, improving simulation performance remains a major challenge in modeling, and current methods are limited to simulating phytoplankton (e.g., Microcystis sp., Anabaena sp., Aulacoseira sp., Cyclotella sp., Pediastrum sp., and Eudorina sp.) and zooplankton (e.g., Cyclotella sp., Pediastrum sp., and Eudorina sp.) at the genus level. The traditional modeling approach is limited for evaluating the interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton. Recently, deep learning (DL) models have been proposed for solving modeling problems because of their large data handling capabilities and model structure flexibilities. In this study, we evaluated the applicability of DL for simulating phytoplankton at the phylum/class and genus levels and zooplankton at the genus level. Our work was an explicit representation of the taxonomic and ecological hierarchy of the DL model structure. The prerequisite for this model design was the data collection at two taxonomic and hierarchical levels. Our model consisted of hierarchical DL with classification transformer (TF) and regression TF models. These DL models were hierarchically connected; the output of the phylum/class level model was transferred to the genus level simulation model, and the output of the genus level model was fed into the zooplankton simulation model. The classification TF model determined the phytoplankton occurrence initiation date, whereas the regression TF model quantified the cell concentration of plankton. The hierarchical DL showed potential to simulate phytoplankton at the phylum/class and genus levels by producing average R2, and root mean standard error values of 0.42 and 0.83 [log(cells mL-1)], respectively. All simulated plankton results closely matched the measured concentrations. Particularly, the simulated cyanobacteria showed good agreement with the measured cell concentration, with an R2 value of 0.72. In addition, our simulated result showed good agreement in peak concentration compared to observations. However, a limitation remained in following the temporal variation of Tintinnopsis sp. and Bosmia sp. Using an importance map from the TF model, water temperature, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen were identified as significant variables influencing phytoplankton and zooplankton blooms. Overall, our study demonstrated that DL can be used for modeling HABs at the phylum/class and genus levels.

Genome instability is one of the leading causes of gastric cancers. However, the mutational landscape of driver genes in gastric cancer is poorly understood. Here, we investigate somatic mutations in 25 Korean gastric adenocarcinoma patients using whole-exome sequencing and show that PWWP2B is one of the most frequently mutated genes. PWWP2B mutation correlates with lower cancer patient survival. We find that PWWP2B has a role in DNA double-strand break repair. As a nuclear protein, PWWP2B moves to sites of DNA damage through its interaction with UHRF1. Depletion of PWWP2B enhances cellular sensitivity to ionizing radiation (IR) and impairs IR-induced foci formation of RAD51. PWWP2B interacts with MRE11 and participates in homologous recombination via promoting DNA end-resection. Taken together, our data show that PWWP2B facilitates the recruitment of DNA repair machinery to sites of DNA damage and promotes HR-mediated DNA double-strand break repair. Impaired PWWP2B function might thus cause genome instability and promote gastric cancer development.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Myanmar have been exposed to conflict and violence for a long time and experience physical, psychological and social problems. Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are more prevalent among IDPs than among general populations and refugees, and limited research is available on this topic among IDPs in Myanmar. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: More than one-third of the IDPs in our sample from Myanmar camps had a high PTSS score. More than two-thirds experienced traumatic events and left home after age 18. The overall functional health of IDPs was poor, and the presence or absence of PTSS led to differences in the factors associated with functional health in each group. Resilience and PTSS were associated with the functional health of IDPs in Myanmar. Further, functional health was positively correlated with levels of resilience among those relatively low in PTSS. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Mental health nurses need to assess IDPs' health status and PTSS by first performing health screening at camps in Myanmar. Subsequently, tailored interventions can be provided according to individual health conditions and PTSS severity. IDPs in Myanmar need psychological first aid to cope with the ongoing conflict and violence, and further mental health nurse training is necessary to implement this aid and tailored interventions for PTSS. ABSTRACT: INTRODUCTION: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are individuals forced to leave their homes and move within their country. Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are prevalent in this population. AIM: To investigate trauma symptoms and functional health of IDPs in Myanmar and identify the factors associated with their functional health according to the presence/absence of PTSS. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 201 IDPs who completed a questionnaire on functional health, PTSS, resilience, social support and hope. The analysis included descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression with interaction analyses. RESULTS: Over one-third of the participants had PTSS, with low functional health scores. The greater the resilience, the better the functional health. The higher participants' PTSS, the poorer their functional health. There was a significant interaction between resilience and PTSS. DISCUSSION: Tailored resilience-building programs, as well as health policies and services, are needed to enhance IDPs' functional health and help them overcome PTSS. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Psychological first aid should be provided to minimize PTSS experienced in situations of ongoing conflict and violence. Mental health nurses should be trained to assess IDPs' health status and tailor interventions accordingly.

This study was conducted in a cross-sectional correlation design to identify factors affecting the practice of COVID-19 prevention activities in patients with heart diseases. A convenience sample of 195 patients with heart diseases from one tertiary teaching hospital completed questionnaires with items from the characteristics of these participants, their knowledge, attitude, and practice related to COVID-19 prevention activities. Participants' knowledge, attitude, and practice for COVID-19 prevention were relatively high but there was a significant difference in the degree of practice of COVID-19 prevention activities according to the characteristics of the participants. The higher the level of their knowledge and the more positive their attitude, the higher their practice. Attitude and information check about COVID-19 prevention were factors that influenced the practice of COVID-19 prevention activities, with an explanatory power of 32%. This study can help motivate and actively encourage COVID-19 prevention practices.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic repair is widely performed for the management of pediatric inguinal hernia (PIH), and different laparoscopic surgical methods are used. Herein, we present the application of laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal ligation (TEPL), which is a novel surgical method for PIH repair and is similar to traditional high ligation. METHODS: In this study, 103 pediatric patients underwent laparoscopic TEPL for inguinal hernia. Data including demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, time of surgery, length of hospital stay, and postoperative complications were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The patient's median age at surgery was 4.3 years, and the median body weight at surgery was 18 kg. The preoperative diagnoses were as follows: n = 53, right inguinal hernia; n = 45, left inguinal hernia; and n = 5, bilateral inguinal hernia. All patients were discharged on the day of surgery. The operative times were 27.2 min for unilateral inguinal hernia and 28.8 min for bilateral inguinal hernia. All patients, except one who had scrotal bruise, did not present with postoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic TEPL, which is similar to traditional high ligation, is used for the treatment of PIH. Moreover, it is safe, beneficial, and feasible. Double ligation is performed on the extraperitoneal space, and the assessment of contralateral patent processus vaginalis is not complex. However, further studies should be conducted to assess for long-term outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Alcohol drinking prevalence in Korea is higher than in other countries and is associated with various social and health problems. Korean culture tends to be tolerant of alcohol drinking and to regard it as an important medium for maintaining good interpersonal relationships in one's social life. Although alcohol drinking is a means of relieving stress, especially among soldiers, who engage in more binge drinking than civilians, there is lack of research focused on problem drinking among soldiers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the extent of problem drinking across all military services and to identify factors associated with problem drinking by military service type. DESIGN: Secondary data analysis. SETTING: Dataset of the Military Health Survey in 2015. PARTICIPANTS: Altogether, 2252 male professional military personnel were included in this study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Problem drinking in this study was defined as at-risk drinking and alcohol abuse or dependence with an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification-Korean (AUDIT-K) score of 10 points or higher. RESULTS: The average AUDIT-K score was 7.38±4.10 points. The prevalence of problem drinking was 16.4% for the Army, 34.5% for the Navy and 32.1% for the Air Force. Factors associated with problem drinking for each military service type were sleep satisfaction (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.284 to 4.236) and family support (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.487 to 0.904) in the Army, smoking status (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.130 to 3.039) and sleep satisfaction (OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.142 to 4.574) in the Navy and marital status (OR 0.60, 95% CI 0.382 to 0.951), smoking (past smokers and non-smokers OR 2.81, 95% CI 1.593 to 4.973, current smokers and non-smokers OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.114 to 2.544), subjective oral health (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.011 to 3.297) and family support (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.45 to 0.88) in the Air Force. CONCLUSION: When implementing health projects to address drinking problems, it is necessary to ensure that service-type-specific factors are considered for integrated management.

The morphological and chemical properties of polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite films after adding small amounts of auxiliary gases such as argon, nitrogen, and oxygen during atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma polymerization are investigated in detail. A separate gas-supply line for applying an auxiliary gas is added to the AP plasma polymerization system to avoid plasma instability due to the addition of auxiliary gas during polymerization. A small amount of neutral gas species in the plasma medium can reduce the reactivity of monomers hyperactivated by high plasma energy and prevent excessive crosslinking, thereby obtaining a uniform and regular PANI nanocomposite film. The addition of small amounts of argon or nitrogen during polymerization significantly improves the uniformity and regularity of PANI nanocomposite films, whereas the addition of oxygen weakens them. In particular, the PANI film synthesized by adding a small amount of nitrogen has the best initial electrical resistance and resistance changing behavior with time after the ex situ iodine (I2)-doping process compared with other auxiliary gases. In addition, it is experimentally demonstrated that the electrical conductivity of the ex situ I2-doped PANI film can be preserved for a long time by isolating it from the atmosphere.

PURPOSE: Transition is an important goal for ensuring that adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with spina bifida (SB) lead autonomous lives. This study aimed to identify the educational needs of AYAs with SB based on the discrepancies between perceived importance and proficiency levels during the transition process. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted through face-to-face and online surveys from Jan-Dec 2020 of AYAs aged 13-25 years who had previously been diagnosed with SB. The survey consisted of 37 transition-related questions, of which 11 pertained to healthcare environments and 26 pertained to transition education needs SPSS and Excel were used for statistical analysis. Transition educational needs were analyzed by the Borich Needs Assessment Model. Higher the mean weighted discrepancy scores, lower the proficiency as compared to the perceived importance, indicating that the educational needs were high. RESULTS: Overall, 108 responses were analyzed, and 56 (51.9%) AYAs were diagnosed with lipomyelomeningocele. The highest ranked educational needs were for "Health insurance system", "SB related urinary system diseases management", "SB related nervous system symptoms", and "Self-catheterization management". "The demands for 'SB related work life", "Urinary incontinence management", and "Constipation management" were significantly higher in young adults than adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: During the transition process, activities perceived as important by AYAs with SB may differ from the activities that they can actually perform proficiently. It is important to assess their needs based on these discrepancies. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Transition education programs are needed that consider the individual educational needs and developmental stage-specific characteristics of AYAs with SB.

Ticks (Ixodidae, also known as hard ticks) as principal vectors of zoonotic diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), Lyme borreliosis, relapsing fever, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, coxiellosis (Q fever), and tularemia pose a major public health threat. This study was conducted to identify the distribution profile of ticks and tick-borne pathogens in Daejeon and the adjacent areas in South Korea, where no such epidemiological study has been conducted. From April to October 2019, 16,765 ticks were collected from three genera and four species: Haemaphysalis longicornis (n = 14,949; 89.2 %), Haemaphysalis flava (n = 987; 5.9 %), Ixodes nipponensis (n = 828; 5.0 %), and Amblyomma testudinarium (n = 1; 0.01 %). Homogenized samples of ticks were screened by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, and PCR for the presence of the following tick-borne pathogens: SFTS virus (SFTSV), Borrelia spp., Babesia microti, Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia spp. As a result, SFTSV (2 cases), Borrelia spp. (32 cases), and Babesia microti (7 cases) were detected. The findings of this study will contribute to the prevention and management of tick-borne zoonoses.
