RESUMO

Three yeast strains, DMKU-GTSP8-6, DMKU-GTSP8-14T and DMKU-JED8-73, were isolated from food waste in Thailand. Based on the phenotypic characteristics and sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, it was revealed that the three strains clustered with the Magnusiomyces/Saprochaete clade. These strains were distinguished from the closely related species Saprochaete quercus CBS 750.85, Magnusiomyces ovetensis CBS 192.55T, Magnusiomyces starmeri CBS 780.96T, Saprochaete chiloensis CBS 8187T and Magnusiomyces ingens CBS 517.90T by 11.4, 13.1, 11.9, 11.2 and 12.6 % sequence divergence in the D1/D2 domain and by 34.6, 34.5, 33.6, 33.2 and 34.9 % sequence divergence in the ITS region, respectively. The new species, which does not produce ascospores, is described as Magnusiomyces siamensis. The holotype of Magnusiomyces siamensis is TBRC 15056T, and the isotypes are DMKU-GTSP8-14T and PYCC 9023T.

This study aimed to explore communities and the ethanol-fermenting ability of yeasts in fresh coconut, palmyra, and nipa palm saps. From the 90 samples of coconut, palmyra, and nipa palm saps, 204 yeast isolates were isolated and identified as 15 species in the phylum Ascomycota and a species (one strain) in Basidiomycota. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Hanseniaspora guilliermondii, and Lachancea thermotolerans were found in the saps of all three palm species. Candida tropicalis and Pichia kudriavzevii were obtained from the coconut and palmyra palm saps, Hanseniaspora vineae, Lachancea fermentati, and Pichia manshurica were present in the coconut and nipa palm saps, whereas Torulaspora delbrueckii was found in the palmyra and nipa palm saps. The species with the highest occurrence in the saps of coconut, palmyra, and nipa palms was S. cerevisiae with 76.67%, 86.70%, and 100% frequency of occurrence, respectively. Using principal coordinates analysis for ordination, no marked difference was observed in the yeast communities from the saps of the three palm species. A total of 199 isolates were found to possess ethanol-fermentation ability when cultivated using shake flask in 160 g/L of glucose medium at 28°C for 48 h. Lachancea fermentati YSP-383, isolated from nipa palm sap, produced the highest amount of ethanol (76.74 g/L). Twenty-six isolates of Candida sanyaensis (1), C. tropicalis (1), H. guilliermondii (7), L. fermentati (8), L. thermotolerans (1), Pichia kudriavzevii (2), and S. cerevisiae (6) produced high amounts of ethanol ranging from 69.57 to 76.74 g/L. The result demonstrated that yeasts in the palm saps could play roles in the natural fermentation of palm saps.

Two strains (YSP-384 and YSP-399), representing a novel Torulaspora species, were isolated from two nipa inflorescence sap samples collected in Trang province in the southern part of Thailand. The two strains had identical sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. The two strains were closest to Torulaspora maleeae CBS 10694T, but with 1.1 % nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene and 5.2 % nucleotide substitutions in the ITS regions. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences of the ITS regions and the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene supported that the two strains represented a distinct species in the genus Torulaspora. Some phenotypic characteristics of the two strains differed from T. maleeae including the two strains have ability to assimilate d-xylose, d-glucono-δ-lactone and melizitose, and inability to ferment maltose and raffinose, whereas T. maleeae has opposite results. Therefore, the two strains are described as representing a novel species, for which the name Torulaspora nypae sp. nov. was proposed.

Three strains, representing a novel anamorphic and d-xylose-fermenting yeast species, were isolated from moss (ST-302T), seawater (ST-1169) and peat (DMKU-XE12) collected from the southern part of Thailand. The three strains had identical sequences of the D1/D2 regions of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Candida flosculorum CBS 10566T and Candida sharkiensis CBS 11368T were the most closely related species with 7.9 % nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 regions of the LSU rRNA gene, and 10.3 and 12.6% nucleotide substitutions in the ITS regions, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences of the ITS and the D1/D2 regions confirmed that the three strains represented a distinct anamorphic species in the Clavispora clade. Therefore, the three strains were described as a novel species, for which we propose the name Candida xylosifermentans sp. nov.

Two strains, which formed pink colonies and produced ballistoconidia and represented a novel anamorphic yeast species, were isolated from peat (DMKU-SPS1-2) and fern leaf (ST-145) collected in Thailand. Analysis of the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions showed that the two strains were identical to the sequences of the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene and differed by two nucleotide substitutions in the ITS regions. Phylogenetic analysis based on the combined sequences of the ITS and the D1/D2 regions confirmed that the two strains represented a single species in the genus Cryptotrichosporon that was distinct from the other known species of the genus. Cryptotrichosporon argae (CBS 14376T) was the most closely related species, but with 2.2 % nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene, and 6.8-8.0 % nucleotide substitutions in the ITS regions. Therefore, the two strains were assigned as a novel species, for which we propose the name Cryptotrichosporon siamense sp. nov. The type is DMKU-SPS1-2T. The MycoBank number of the novel species is MB82336.

Eight strains, representing two novel anamorphic yeast species, consisted of five strains isolated from the external surfaces of rice leaves (DMKU-RP72(T), DMKU-RP109, DMKU-RP119, YE-124 and YE-156) and one from a corn leaf (DMKU-CP430(T))4 collected in Thailand, and one strain isolated from each of a composite flower (11-1114) and a fallen dead leaf (12-301); the latter two were collected in Belize. On the basis of sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, they were suggested to be two novel species of the genus Hannaella. Seven strains (DMKU-RP72(T), DMKU-RP109, DMKU-RP119, YE-124, YE-156, 11-1114 and 12-301) differed from each other by 0-3 nt substitutions in the D1/D2 region and by 0-1 nt substitutions in the ITS region. In terms of pairwise sequence similarities of the D1/D2 region these seven strains were closest to Hannaella zeae, but with 1.2-1.7% (7-9) nucleotide substitutions. The sequences of the ITS region of these seven strains differed from H. zeae by 3.7-3.9% (16-17) nucleotide substitutions. Therefore, they were assigned to a single novel species and the name Hannaella siamensis sp. nov. has been proposed. The type strain is DMKU-RP72(T) ( = BCC 69493(T) = NBRC 110425(T) = CBS 13533(T)). Strain DMKU-CP430(T) represents the second novel species and was also most closely related to H. zeae, but with 1.0% (6) nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 region and 3.2% (14) nucleotide substitutions in the ITS region. It was assigned to the proposed novel species, Hannaella phetchabunensis sp. nov. (type strain DMKU-CP430(T) = BCC 69492(T) = NBRC 110424(T) = CBS 13386(T)).

Two yeast strains representing two novel yeast species were isolated from frass of an unidentified insect (ST-78(T)) and the external surfaces of rice leaves (YE170(T)) collected in Thailand. The two strains were genetically, morphologically and phenotypically distinct from recognized species and were found to represent two novel species of the genus Yamadazyma although formation of ascospores was not observed. In terms of pairwise sequence similarity of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit rRNA gene, the closest relative of strain ST-78(T) was Candida lessepsii CBS 9941(T) but with 3.8% nucleotide substitutions, while the closest relative of strain YE170(T) was strain ST-78(T) but with 4.3% nucleotide substitutions. Analysis of the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 (ITS1-2) regions revealed that strain ST-78 differed from C. lessepsii CBS 9941(T) by 8.8% nucleotide substitutions and from strain YE170(T) by 9.4% nucleotide substitutions. The result of pairwise sequence similarity of the D1/D2 and ITS1-2 regions together with phylogenetic analysis indicated that strains ST-78(T) and YE170(T) represented two novel species within the Yamadazyma clade. The names Yamadazyma insecticola f.a., sp. nov. (type strain ST-78(T) = BCC 8314(T) = NBRC 110421(T) = CBS 13382(T); MycoBank no. MB810546) and Yamadazyma epiphylla f.a., sp. nov. (type strain YE170(T) = BCC 63466(T) = NBRC 110423(T) = CBS 13384(T); MycoBank no. MB810547) are proposed for the two novel yeast species.

Yeasts were isolated by the enrichment technique from the phylloplane of 94 samples of sugarcane leaf collected from seven provinces in Thailand. All sugarcane leaf samples contained yeasts and 158 yeast strains were obtained. On the basis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene sequence analysis, 144 strains were identified to 24 known species in 14 genera belonging to the Ascomycota viz. Candida akabanensis, Candida dendronema, Candida mesorugosa, Candida michaelii, Candida nivariensis, Candida rugosa, Candida orthopsilosis, Candida quercitrusa, Candida tropicalis, Candida xylopsoci, Cyberlindnera fabianii, Cyberlindnera rhodanensis, Debaryomyces nepalensis, Hannaella aff. coprosmaensis, Hanseniaspora guilliermondii, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Lachancea thermotolerans, Lodderomyces elongisporus, Metschnikowia koreensis, Meyerozyma caribbica, Millerozyma koratensis, Pichia kudriavzevii, Torulaspora delbrueckii and Wickerhamomyces edaphicus, and 12 species in six genera of the Basidiomycota viz . Cryptococcus flavescens, Cryptococcus laurentii, Cryptococcus rajasthanensis, Kwoniella heveanensis, Rhodosporidium fluviale, Rhodosporidium paludigenum, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Rhodotorula sesimbrana, Rhodotorula taiwanensis, Sporidiobolus ruineniae, Sporobolomyces carnicolor and Sporobolomyces nylandii. Seven strains were identical or similar to four undescribed species. Another seven strains represented four novels species in the genus Metschnikowia, Nakazawaea, Wickerhamomyces and Yamadazyma. The results revealed 69 % of the isolated strains were ascomycete yeasts and 31 % were basidiomycete yeast. The most prevalent species was M. caribbica with a 23 % frequency of occurrence followed by Rh. taiwanensis (11 %) and C. tropicalis (10 %). All strains were assessed for indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) producing capability showing that 69 strains had the capability of producing IAA when cultivated in yeast extract peptone dextrose broth supplemented with 1 g/L L-tryptophan. The highest IAA concentration of 565.1 mg/L was produced by R. fluviale DMKU-RK253.

Strain DMKU-RK467(T), representing a novel yeast species, was isolated from the external surface of sugar cane leaves collected in Thailand. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, and sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, strain DMKU-RK467(T) was assigned to a novel species of the genus Nakazawaea. The novel species was related most closely to the type strain of Candida wickerhamii but they differed by 1.9 % nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and by 5.2 % nucleotide substitutions in the ITS region. The name Nakazawaea siamensis f.a., sp. nov. is proposed (type strain DMKU-RK467(T) = BCC 50734(T) = NBRC 108903(T) = CBS 12569(T)).

Three strains (K59(T), K60 and K70 (T)) representing two novel yeast species were isolated from the external surface of leaves of different wine grape (Vitis vinifera) plants, which were collected from the Kanchanaburi Research Station (N14°07'15.1″ E099°19'05.6″), Wang Dong Sub-district, Mueang District, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, by an enrichment technique. The sequences of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene of two strains (K59(T) and K60) were identical and differed from that of strain K70(T). In terms of pairwise sequence similarity of the D1/D2 domain, the closest species to the three strains was Candida asparagi but with 2.3% nucleotide substitutions for strains K59(T) and K60, and 2.1% nucleotide substitutions for strain K70(T). On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics and the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene, the three strains were assigned to be two novel Candida species. Two strains (K59(T) and K60) were assigned as Candida phyllophila sp. nov. (type strain K59(T)=BCC 42662(T)=NBRC 107776(T)=CBS 12671(T)). Candida vitiphila sp. nov. is proposed for strain K70(T) (=BCC 42663(T)=NBRC 107777(T)=CBS 12672(T)).

Strain DMKU-RK359(T), representing a novel yeast species, was isolated from the external surface of a sugar-cane leaf collected in Thailand. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the large-subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, strain DMKU-RK359(T) was assigned to a novel Wickerhamomyces species. The novel species was closest to Wickerhamomyces ciferrii, but differed from it by 0.7 % nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene and 6 % nucleotide substitutions in the ITS region. The name Wickerhamomyces siamensis sp. nov. is proposed (type strain DMKU-RK359(T)  = BCC 50732(T)  = NBRC 108900(T)  = CBS 12570(T)).

Three strains (KM03(T), KM13 (T) and KM15) representing two novel methylotrophic yeast species were isolated from the external surface of plant leaves, which were collected from Kanchanaburi province, Thailand, by three-consecutive enrichments in methanol broth. Strain KM03(T) was isolated from phylloplane of a mango tree (Mangifera indica) and two strains, KM13(T) and KM15, were obtained from phylloplane of different wine grapes (Vitis vinifera). The sequences of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene of the two strains (KM13(T) and KM15) were identical and differed markedly from that of strain KM03(T). In terms of pairwise sequence similarity of the D1/D2 region the closest species to the strains KM13(T) and KM15 were Candida suzukii (CBS 9253(T)) and Candida nitratophila (CBS 2027(T)) but with 2.1 % nucleotide substitutions. Strain KM03(T) differed from Ogataea wickerhamii (CBS 4307(T)), its closest relative, by 2.3 % nucleotide substitutions. Phylogenetic analysis based on the D1/D2 sequences placed the three strains in the Ogataea clade. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the sequence analyses of the D1/D2 and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nrRNA) operon, the three strains represent two novel Ogataea species although formation of ascospores was not observed. Ogataea kanchanaburiensis sp. nov. is proposed for strain KM03(T) (=BCC 47626(T) = NBRC 108603(T) = CBS 12673(T)). Two strains, KM13(T) and KM15, were assigned to Ogataea wangdongensis sp. nov. (type strain KM13(T) = BCC 42664(T) = NBRC 107778(T) = CBS 12674(T)). GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession numbers for the sequences of the D1/D2 and the ITS regions of O. kanchanaburiensis KM03(T) are AB734090 and AB734093, respectively, of O. wangdongensis KM13(T) are AB734091 and AB734094, respectively, and of O. wangdongensis KM15 are AB734092 and AB734095, respectively.

Four strains representing three novel anamorphic yeast species were isolated from the external surface of sugarcane leaves (DMKU-RK254(T)), corn leaves (DMKU-RK548(T)), bean leaves (K129) in Thailand and hengchun pencilwood leaves (TrB1-1(T)) in Taiwan. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the actin gene (ACT1) and the elongation factor 2 gene (EF2), the four strains were determined to represent novel Yamadazyma species although formation of ascospores was not observed. Strain DMKU-RK254(T) was determined to be related to Candida diddensiae, Candida naeodendra and Candida kanchanaburiensis but with 1.8, 1.8 and 2.0 % nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene, respectively. It was assigned to Yamadazyma siamensis sp. nov. (type strain DMKU-RK254(T) = BCC 50730(T) = NBRC 108901(T) = CBS 12573(T)). The sequences of the D1/D2 region of the LSU rRNA gene, the ITS region, ACT1 gene and EF2 gene of two strains (DMKU-RK548(T) and K129) were identical but differed from that of strain TrB1-1(T) by 0.6, 1.0, 3.3 and 5.9 % nucleotide substitutions, respectively. Therefore, the two strains (DMKU-RK548(T) and K129) and strain TrB1-1(T) were assigned to be two separate species. The closest species in terms of pairwise sequences similarity of the D1/D2 region to the two novel species was Yamadazyma philogaea but with 1.1-1.7 % nucleotide substitutions. The two strains (DMKU-RK548(T) and K129) were assigned to Yamadazyma phyllophila sp. nov. (type strain DMKU-RK548(T) = BCC 50736(T) = NBRC 108906(T) = CBS 12572(T)) and the strain TrB1-1(T) was named Yamadazyma paraphyllophila sp. nov. (type strain TrB1-1(T) = BCRC 23030(T) = CCTCC AY 204005(T) = CBS 9928(T)).

Five strains representing two novel anamorphic yeast species were isolated from the external surface of sugarcane leaves (DMKU-RK16, DMKU-RK24, DMKU-RK198 and DMKU-RK500(T)) and rice leaf (DMKU-RK277(T)) by an enrichment technique. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer region, the five strains were assigned to be two novel species of the Metschnikowia, although the formation of ascospores was not observed. Four strains (DMKU-RK16, DMKU-RK24, DMKU-RK198 and DMKU-RK500(T)) where the sequences of the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene were identical and differed by 4.1 % nucleotide substitutions (20 nucleotide substitutions and four gaps out of 490 nt) from the type strain of Candida succicola, their closest known species in terms of pairwise sequence similarity, represent a single novel species, for which the name Metschnikowia saccharicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DMKU-RK500(T) (= BCC 50735(T) = NBRC 108904(T) = CBS 12575(T)). Strain DMKU-RK277(T) was closest to Candida hainanensis but with 4.0 % nucleotide substitutions (18 nucleotide substitutions and three gaps out of 449 nt) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene was assigned to be Metschnikowia lopburiensis sp. nov. (type strain DMKU-RK277(T) = BCC 50731(T) = NBRC 108902(T) = CBS 12574(T)).

RESUMO

Two strains (NT29(T) and NT31(T)) of xylose-assimilating yeasts were obtained from soils collected in northern Thailand. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, and sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer region, the two strains were found to represent two novel ascomycete yeast species. Strain NT29(T) was assigned to the genus Candida belonging to the Pichia clade as a representative of Candida phayaonensis sp. nov.; the type strain is NT29(T) (=BCC 47634(T)=NBRC 108868(T)=CBS 12319(T)). Strain NT31(T) represented a novel Wickerhamomyces species, which was named Wickerhamomyces xylosica sp. nov.; the type strain is NT31(T) (=BCC 47635(T)=NBRC 108869(T)=CBS 12320(T)).

Two strains representing a single novel yeast species were isolated from a flower of Calycoopteris floribunda Lame (SK170(T)) and insect frass (ST-122) collected in Thailand. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, and the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer region, the two strains were assigned as a single novel Candida species in the Hyphopichia clade for which the name Candida wangnamkhiaoensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SK170(T)=BCC 39604(T)=NBRC 106724(T)=CBS 11695(T)).

Three yeast stains were isolated from two unknown fruits (strains DD2-22-1(T) and SK44) and moss (strain ST-449) in Thailand. Analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene sequences of the three strains revealed that they belonged to the same species. In terms of pairwise sequence similarity, Candida cf. glabrata UWO(PS) 98-110.4 and Candida nivariensis were the closest undescribed and recognized taxa, but the levels of nucleotide substitutions were 1.7-1.9% and 2.0-2.2%, respectively. The levels of nucleotide substitutions were sufficient to justify the description of a separate species of Candida. In the phylogenetic tree based on the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene the three strains were placed in a separate branch in the Nakaseomyces clade with C. cf. glabrata UWO(PS)98-110.4, C. nivariensis, Candida glabrata, Candida bracarensis, Candida kungkrabaensis and Nakaseomyces delphensis. Phenotypic characteristics of the three strains were similar which included proliferation by multilateral budding, absence of ascospores, arthrospores or ballistospores; negative for Diazonium blue B and urease tests. The major ubiquinone was Q-6. On the basis of the above findings, the three strains were assigned to a single novel species of Candida, for which the name Candida uthaithanina sp. nov is proposed. The type strain is DD2-22-1(T) (= BCC 29899(T) = NBRC 104876(T) = CBS 10932(T)).

During surveys on yeast diversity in forest soils from Taiwan and Thailand, ten yeast strains isolated from different samples were found to have similar molecular and physiological characteristics. Sequence analysis of small subunit (SSU) rDNA, the D1/D2 domain of large subunit (LSU) rDNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-5.8S rDNA demonstrated that these strains were closely related to Scheffersomyces spartinae. The novel strains could be differentiated from S. spartinae by a 0.9  % sequence divergence (5 substitutions, 0 gaps) in the D1/D2 domain of LSU rDNA, a 1.5  % divergence (8 substitutions, 0 gaps) in the ITS-5.8S rDNA and a 0.7  % divergence (12 substitutions, 2 gaps) in the SSU rDNA. The novel strains also showed specific patterns of electrophoretic karyotypes that differed from that of S. spartinae. Therefore, a novel yeast species, Candida gosingica sp. nov., is proposed to accommodate these strains. The type strain SJ7S11(T) (=BCRC 23194(T)=CBS 11433(T)) was assigned and deposited in the Bioresource Collection and Research Center (BCRC), Food Industry Development and Research Institute, Hsinchu, Taiwan, and Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS), Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Six yeast strains of a novel anamorphic yeast species were isolated from natural samples collected in Thailand (RV60(T) and LYSM9), Taiwan (SC5L04 and GE19S05), and Japan (JCM 11058 and JCM 11059). Analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene sequences revealed that the sequences of five strains (LYSM9, SC5L04, GE19S05, JCM 11058, and JCM 11059) were identical and differed from the sequence of strain RV60(T) by only one nucleotide substitution. The closest recognized species in terms of pairwise sequence similarity was Candida abiesophila, but the level of nucleotide substitution (14.2-14.3%) was sufficient to justify the description of a separate species. Phenotypic characteristics of the six strains were almost the same except for two strains from Japan, which showed the ability to ferment glucose and grew in the presence of 10% NaCl and 5% glucose while the others did not. The phenotypic characteristics of the six strains included proliferation by multilateral budding, absence of ascospores, arthrospores, and ballistospores, and negative Diazonium blue B and urease tests. The major ubiquinone was Q-7. On the basis of the above findings, the six strains were assigned to a single novel species of Candida, for which the name Candida asiatica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RV60(T) (BCC 25966(T) = NBRC 103863(T) = CBS 10863(T)).

Nine strains of three novel anamorphic yeast species were obtained from samples collected in Thailand including six strains (RV96, RV152, R14, RS9, RS58 and EA1) obtained from estuarine waters collected from two mangrove forests, one strain (ST84) from insect frass and two strains (SR16 and UB13) from forest soils. On the basis of morphological, biochemical, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, and the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA gene, the nine strains were found to represent three novel Candida species in the Saturnispora clade. Five strains (RV96, RV152, R14, RS9 and RS58) were assigned as a single novel species, which was named Candida sanitii sp. nov. The type strain is RV152(T) (BCC 25967(T)=NBRC 103864(T)=CBS 10864(T)). Strain EA1 was named as Candida suwanaritii sp. nov. The type strain is EA1(T) (BCC 29900(T)=NBRC 104877(T)=CBS 11021(T)). Three strains (ST84, SR16 and UB13) represented another novel species, for which Candida sekii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ST84(T) (BCC 8320(T)=NBRC 105671(T)=CBS 10931(T)).
