RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Considering the epidemic status of the COVID-19 virus, the discussion of the psychological effects of this disease on the mental health of people at different levels of society is of great importance. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the relationship between coping (problem-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidance-oriented) with psychological well-being in people with coronavirus disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this correlational study, the statistical population consisted of all individuals with experience of coronavirus in 2021 in Kermanshah city. In total, 220 people were selected as the sample using an available sampling method. The instruments used in this study were Reef Psycho-Welfare Questionnaire (PWBQ) and Andler and Parker Coping Styles (CISS-SF). Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and simultaneous regression. RESULTS: Multiple correlations of coping variables (problem-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidance-oriented) with psychological well-being (R = 0.671; P = 0.01) are significant. Problem-oriented coping style (beta = 0.329; P = 0.05), emotional coping style (beta = 0.329; P = 0.05); avoidant coping style (beta = 0.144; P = 0.05) had a significant relationship with psychological well-being. CONCLUSION: According to the obtained results, the importance of paying attention to coping styles in psychological well-being is felt more than before. Psychological well-being seems to be influenced by other factors and their interactive effects as well.

RESUMO

Research has posited that social media use during the day may be reflected in nighttime dreams. Nevertheless, no prior studies have explored frightening, unpleasant dreams arising from social media use. This study introduces the construct of the social media-related nightmare by (a) developing and validating a scale capturing negative-valenced dreams with themes of helplessness, loss of control, inhibition, victimization, and making mistakes in social media, and (b) examining relationships between social media use, social media-related nightmares, sleep quality, and affective well-being. A convenience sample of 595 Iranian adult social media users (Mage = 27.45, SDage = 11.42) reported on social media-related nightmare, social media use integration, anxiety, peace of mind, sleep quality, and nightmare distress. The Social Media-Related Nightmare Scale (SMNS) demonstrated a unidimensional structure with sound psychometric properties. The most common nightmares involved the inability to log in to social media and the disruption of relationships with other users. Social media use intensity predicted frequency of social media-related nightmares. These nightmares were correlated with increased anxiety, lower peace of mind, poor sleep quality, and nightmare distress. Importantly, social media-related nightmares mediated the relationship between social media use intensity and low affective well-being (i.e., anxiety and peace of mind), poor sleeping, and nightmare distress. The findings suggest that social media-related nightmares could be a potential pathway through which social media engagement may lead to affective distress and sleep difficulties.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mental health is a significant part of one's health and it is very important to pay attention to mental health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to examine the effect of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on the mental health of adolescents with an emotional breakdown (EB). METHODS: This was a semi-experimental study, in which the students with an EB were divided into two groups: the experimental and control groups. Twenty people were selected using the convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to the ACT and control groups (each with 10 people). After obtaining consent to participate in the study, they were asked to fill the questionnaires as a pre-test. Then, the experimental group was treated for nine individual sessions (weekly one session). As this was a repeated measurement method, in sessions 3, 6 and 9, the questionnaires were completed again and the follow-up period was 1 month after the end of the interventions. RESULTS: Before the intervention, there was no difference between the score of the impact of love and rumination among the students in the experimental and control groups (p > 0.05); but after the intervention, the score of the impact of love and rumination in the experimental group decreased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is suggested that ACT should be used at counseling centers of universities and educational institutions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adolescence and youth are important periods in the growth and excellence of an individual. OBJECTIVES: Given the importance of the study, its purpose was to determine the effect of rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on anxiety and resilience in students. METHODS: Students admitted to the counseling centers of Ilam University were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Using convenient sampling method, 30 subjects were selected and randomly assigned to either REBT tests or a control group (10 subjects in each). The 26 codes of ethics were observed in the study and the data were analyzed using SPSS17. RESULTS: Before the intervention, the anxiety score was 26.75 (4.43) and after the intervention it was 18 (4.403) (p < 0.05), but in the control group it was 31.34 (6.04) before the intervention and after the intervention it was 32.35 (5.17) (p > 0.05). Before the intervention, the anxiety score was 52.77 (13.37) and after the intervention it was 60.00 (14.31) (p < 0.05), but in the control group it was 47.00 (8.73) before the intervention and after the intervention it was 49.76 (9.10) (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: REBT was effective in students as it reduced anxiety and increased resilience. Thus, it is suggested for use in students' care.

RESUMO

AIMS: The aims of the present study were to investigate the association between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) c.C677T (p.A222V) and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) c.G472A (p.V158M) polymorphisms and their synergism with respect to bipolar I disorder (BID). METHODS: Within an ethnic Kurdish population from Western Iran the MTHFR c.C677T and COMT c.G472A polymorphisms were studied in 150 patients with BID and 149 gender- and age-matched healthy individuals using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. RESULTS: In the presence of MTHFR 677T allele and MTHFR TT genotype, the risk of BID was 1.44 times (p = 0.046) and 1.81-fold (p = 0.029), respectively. The frequency of COMT 472G allele compared to the A allele in cases and controls was not significant (p = 0.078); however there was a synergism between the presence of MTHFR 677T and COMT 472G alleles that increased the risk of BID by 2.58-fold (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the presence of the lower activity allele of MTHFR (677T) increased the risk of BID. In addition, the concomitant presence of the MTHFR 677T allele with the COMT 472G allele was associated with increased susceptibility to BID in our population.
