Doped two-dimensional (2D) materials hold significant promise for advancing many technologies, such as microelectronics, optoelectronics, and energy storage. Herein, n-type 2D oxidized Si nanosheets, namely n-type siloxene (n-SX), are employed as Li-ion battery anodes. Via thermal evaporation of sodium hypophosphite at 275 °C, P atoms are effectively incorporated into siloxene (SX) without compromising its 2D layered morphology and unique Kautsky-type crystal structure. Further, selective nucleophilic substitution occurs, with only Si atoms being replaced by P atoms in the O3≡Si-H tetrahedra. The resulting n-SX possesses two delocalized electrons arising from the presence of two electron donor types: (i) P atoms residing in Si sites and (ii) H vacancies. The doping concentrations are varied by controlling the amount of precursors or their mean free paths. Even at 2000 mA g-1, the n-SX electrode with the optimized doping concentration (6.7 × 1019 atoms cm-3) delivers a capacity of 594 mAh g-1 with a 73% capacity retention after 500 cycles. These improvements originate from the enhanced kinetics of charge transport processes, including electronic conduction, charge transfer, and solid-state diffusion. The approach proposed herein offers an unprecedented route for engineering SX anodes to boost Li-ion storage.

We introduce a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) energy harvester, designed for capturing flow energy. Moving beyond traditional vibration-based energy harvesting, our approach incorporates a cylindrical oscillator mounted on an MEMS chip, effectively harnessing wind energy through flow-induced vibration (FIV). A highlight of our research is the development of a comprehensive fabrication process, utilizing a 5.00 µm thick cantilever beam and piezoelectric film, optimized through advanced micromachining techniques. This process ensures the harvester's alignment with theoretical predictions and enhances its operational efficiency. Our wind tunnel experiments confirmed the harvester's capability to generate a notable electrical output, with a peak voltage of 2.56 mV at an 8.00 m/s wind speed. Furthermore, we observed a strong correlation between the experimentally measured voltage frequencies and the lift force frequency observed by CFD analysis, with dominant frequencies identified in the range of 830 Hz to 867 Hz, demonstrating the potential application in actual flow environments. By demonstrating the feasibility of efficient energy conversion from ambient wind, our research contributes to the development of sustainable energy solutions and low-power wireless electron devices.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) assay is widely used to screen for HCV infection, it has a high false-positive (FP) rate in low-risk populations. We investigated the accuracy of anti-HCV signal-to-cutoff (S/CO) ratio to distinguish true-positive (TP) from FP HCV infection. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 77,571 patients with anti-HCV results. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of anti-HCV S/CO ratio in anti-HCV positive patients. RESULTS: Overall, 1,126 patients tested anti-HCV positive; 34.7% of patients were FP based on HCV RNA and/or recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA) results. The age and sex-adjusted anti-HCV prevalence was 1.22%. We identified significant differences in serum aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase levels, anti-HCV S/CO ratio, and RIBA results between groups (viremia vs. non-viremia, TP vs. FP). Using ROC curves, the optimal cutoff values of anti-HCV S/CO ratio for HCV viremia and TP were 8 and 5, respectively. The area under the ROC curve, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were 0.970 (95% CI, 0.959-0.982, p < 0.001), 99.7%, 87.5%, 87.4%, and 99.7%, respectively, for predicting HCV viremia at an anti-HCV S/CO ratio of 8 and 0.987 (95% CI, 0.980-0.994, p < 0.001), 95.3%, 94.7%, 97.1%, and 91.4%, respectively, for TP HCV infection at an anti-HCV S/CO ratio of 5. No patients with HCV viremia had an anti-HCV S/CO ratio below 5. CONCLUSION: The anti-HCV S/CO ratio is highly accurate for discriminating TP from FP HCV infection and should be considered when diagnosing HCV infections.

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer, and its incidence has increased. Lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM) implies a worse prognosis than central lymph node metastasis, with a higher recurrence rate and decreased disease-free survival. The 2015 American Thyroid Association guidelines recommend compartmental node dissection in patients with LLNM to reduce the risk of recurrence and mortality. The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for level V lymph node (LN) metastasis in patients with N1b papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). METHODS: A total of 110 consecutive patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with lateral neck dissection for PTC between April 2016 and April 2022 were retrospectively enrolled. Based on level V metastasis, 94 patients were divided into two groups, and their clinicopathological characteristics were compared. Univariable analysis were used to assess the factors associated with level V metastasis. Spearman correlation analysis were used to assess the correlation between tumors and LN. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the optimal cutoff value for the number of metastatic LNs at each level for level V metastasis. RESULTS: The number of metastatic LNs and lymph node ratio (LNR) in level II were significantly associated with level V metastasis (P = 0.011 and 0.001, respectively). The number of metastatic LNs in level II and those in the total number of levels correlated with the number of metastatic LNs in level V (rho = 0.331, 0.325, and P = 0.001, 0.001, respectively). The cutoff value for the number of metastatic LNs in level II was defined as 2.5 (area under the curve = 0.757, sensitivity = 50%, specificity = 82.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.626-0.889, P = 0.002). Simultaneous 3-level metastasis (level II, III, and IV) and 3-level with ≥ 2.5 metastatic LNs in level II were significantly associated with level V metastasis (P = 0.003 and 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The number of metastatic LNs and LNR in level II, simultaneous 3-level metastasis (level II, III, and IV), and 3-level with ≥ 2.5 metastatic LNs in level II were significantly associated with level V metastasis. (P = 0.011, 0.001, 0.003, and 0.002, respectively). In the future, larger-scale multi-institutional studies were needed to find out predictors for level V metastasis.

This paper proposes a post-processing method called bidirectional interpolation method for sampling-based path planning algorithms, such as rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT). The proposed algorithm applies interpolation to the path generated by the sampling-based path planning algorithm. In this study, the proposed algorithm is applied to the path created by RRT-connect and six environmental maps were used for the verification. It was visually and quantitatively confirmed that, in all maps, not only path lengths but also the piecewise linear shape were decreased compared to the path generated by RRT-connect. To check the proposed algorithm's performance, visibility graph, RRT-connect algorithm, Triangular-RRT-connect algorithm and post triangular processing of midpoint interpolation (PTPMI) were compared in various environmental maps through simulation. Based on these experimental results, the proposed algorithm shows similar planning time but shorter path length than previous RRT-like algorithms as well as RRT-like algorithms with PTPMI having a similar number of samples.

We present an integrated experimental and theoretical study of the dynamics and rheology of self-crosslinked, slightly charged, temperature responsive soft poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) microgels over a wide range of concentration and temperature spanning the sharp change in particle size and intermolecular interactions across the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Dramatic, non-monotonic changes in viscoelasticity are observed as a function of temperature, with distinct concentration dependence in the dense fluid, glassy, and soft-jammed regimes. Motivated by our experimental observations, we formulate a minimalistic model for the size dependence of a single microgel particle and the change of the interparticle interaction from purely repulsive to attractive upon heating. Using microscopic equilibrium and time-dependent statistical mechanical theories, theoretical predictions are quantitatively compared with experimental measurements of the shear modulus. Good agreement is found for the nonmonotonic temperature behavior that originates as a consequence of the competition between reduced microgel packing fraction and increasing interparticle attractions. Testable predictions are made for nonlinear rheological properties such as the yield stress and strain. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to quantitatively understand in a unified manner the viscoelasticity of dense, temperature-responsive microgel suspensions spanning a wide range of temperatures and concentrations.

RESUMO

This paper proposed a triangular inequality-based rewiring method for the rapidly exploring random tree (RRT)-Connect robot path-planning algorithm that guarantees the planning time compared to the RRT algorithm, to bring it closer to the optimum. To check the proposed algorithm's performance, this paper compared the RRT and RRT-Connect algorithms in various environments through simulation. From these experimental results, the proposed algorithm shows both quicker planning time and shorter path length than the RRT algorithm and shorter path length than the RRT-Connect algorithm with a similar number of samples and planning time.

Background. The hybrid ultrasonic advanced bipolar device (HUB) that integrates ultrasonic energy and advanced bipolar energy was recently developed and applied to thyroid surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of HUB and ultrasonic coagulating shears for open thyroidectomy. Methods. A total of 200 patients were enrolled from April to September 2017 in this prospective, randomized, multicenter study. Patients were randomly assigned to an ultrasonic group (n = 101) or a hybrid group (n = 99). Results. Operation times were similar in the 2 study groups, that is, 54.2 ± 25.2 minutes in the ultrasonic group and 50.2 ± 21.6 minutes in the hybrid group. Postoperative surgical results and morbidities were no different in the 2 groups. However, the total amount of bleeding was significantly less in the hybrid group (13.0 ± 17.7 mg vs 8.6 ± 11.5 mg; P = .042). Conclusions. Our study showed that there was no significant difference between the 2 groups in postoperative surgical results and morbidity. The total bleeding amount was significantly less in the hybrid group. The study shows that HUB is comparable to the ultrasonic coagulating shears in terms of efficacy and safety during thyroid surgery.

Microscale fiber-based supercapacitors have become increasingly important for the needs of flexible, wearable, and lightweight portable electronics. Fiber electrodes without pre-existing cores enable a wider selection of materials and geometries than is possible through core-containing electrodes. The carbonization of fibrous precursors using an electrically driven route, different from a conventional high-temperature process, is particularly promising for achieving this structure. Here, we present a facile and low-cost process for producing high-performance microfiber supercapacitor electrodes based on carbonaceous materials without cores. Fibrous carbon nanotubes-agarose composite hydrogels, formed by an extrusion process, are converted to a composite fiber consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) surrounded by an amorphous carbon (aC) matrix via Joule heating. When assembled into symmetrical two-electrode cells, the composite fiber (aC-CNTs) supercapacitor electrodes deliver a volumetric capacitance of 5.1 F cm-3 even at a high current density of 118 mA cm-3. Based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, it is revealed that high electrochemical properties are attributed to fast response kinetics with a characteristic time constant of 2.5 s. The aC-CNTs fiber electrodes exhibit a 94% capacitance retention at 14 mA cm-3 for at least 10,000 charge-discharge cycles even when deformed (90° bend), which is essentially the same as that (96%) when not deformed. The aC-CNTs fiber electrodes also demonstrate excellent storage performance under mechanical deformation-for example, 1000 bending-straightening cycles.

BACKGROUND: Recently, stool multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests have been developed for identifying diarrhea-causing bacterial pathogens. Furthermore, fecal calprotectin is a well-known effective marker for intestinal mucosal inflammation. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of stool multiplex PCR and fecal calprotectin in acute infectious diarrhea. METHODS: Overall, 400 patients with acute infectious diarrhea were enrolled from Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital (January 2016 to December 2018). Multiplex PCR detected 7 enteropathogenic bacteria including Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Aeromonas, Vibrio, and Clostridium difficile. We reviewed clinical and laboratory findings using stool multiplex PCR. RESULTS: Stool multiplex PCR test detected considerably more bacterial pathogens than stool culture (49.2% vs 5.2%), with Campylobacter as the most common pathogen (54%). Patients with positive stool PCR showed elevated fecal calprotectin expression compared to patients with negative stool PCR (1124.5 ± 816.9 mg/kg vs 609 ± 713.2 mg/kg, P = 0.001). C-reactive protein (OR = 1.01, 95%CI: 1.001-1.027, P = 0.034) and sigmoidoscopy-detected colitis (OR = 4.76, 95%CI: 1.101-20.551, P = 0.037) were independent factors in stool PCR-based detection of bacterial pathogens. Sensitivity and specificity of calprotectin were evaluated to be 70.5% and 60.9%, respectively (adjusted cut-off value = 388 mg/kg). CONCLUSION: Stool multiplex PCR test has increased sensitivity in detecting pathogens than conventional culture, and it is correlated with calprotectin expression. Stool multiplex PCR and calprotectin may be effective in predicting clinical severity of infectious diarrhea.

(Background) The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic impact of lymphatic invasion in gastric cancer, focusing on survival differences between N stage groups. (Methods) A total of 398 consecutive patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for primary gastric adenocarcinoma from January 2006 to December 2015 were analyzed retrospectively using data from a prospectively collected registry database. We compared various clinicopathological features and survival differences between lymphatic invasion-positive and -negative groups. (Results) Of the 398 patients, 141 (35.4%) showed lymphatic invasion. The lymphatic invasion-positive subgroup had poorer prognosis than the lymphatic invasion-negative subgroup in N0 (five-year survival rate: 87.8% vs. 73.6%, p = 0.048) and N1 (87.2% vs. 50%, p = 0.007) stage patients. The odds ratio (OR) of lymphatic invasion to five-year survival rate was 2.078 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.103-3.916; p = 0.024). The presence of lymphatic invasion had worse effect on survival than age (OR, 1.807; 95% CI, 1.024-2.242; p = 0.029) or tumor depth (OR, 1.286; 95% CI, 1.078-1.897; p = 0.013) in N0 and N1 stage patients. The overall survival of patients with lymphatic invasion was not different from that of patients at a one-higher N stage without lymphatic invasion at any N stage. (Conclusions) The presence of lymphatic invasion may be the most important independent prognostic factor in N0 and N1 gastric cancer and might be an upstaging factor of N stage at any N stage. Therefore, in addition to the number of metastasized lymph nodes, the presence of lymphatic invasion should be included in N stage determination.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic central neck dissection (CND) in clinically node-negative (cN0) papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the benefits of prophylactic ipsilateral CND compared with bilateral CND in total thyroidectomy for cN0 unilateral PTC. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 174 patients who underwent total thyroidectomies with prophylactic CND for cN0 unilateral PTC between January 2009 and May 2010. The prophylactic CND patients were divided into group 1, the ipsilateral CND group (n=74), and group 2, the bilateral CND group (n=100). The incidence of central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) and postoperative complications, such as hypoparathyroidism, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, and recurrence were assessed. RESULTS: CLNM was found in 22 (29.8%) in group 1 and 69 (69%) in group 2. The incidence of postoperative severe hypocalcemia less than 7.0 was also significantly different (six patients [8.1%] in group 1 and 23 [23%] in group 2; p=0.009). Permanent hypoparathyroidism was significantly more frequent in group 2 (4.1% vs. 19%; p=0.005). However, the incidence of transient hypoparathyroidism, recurrence, and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was not significantly different. CONCLUSION: Prophylactic ipsilateral CND has advantage not only to reduce incidence of some complications but also to have similar recurrence rate compared with bilateral CND. We suggest that prophylactic ipsilateral CND may be safe and effective for selected patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for cN0 unilateral PTC.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in immune inactive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) have not been clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors for HCC inimmune inactive CHB. METHODS: A total of 337 patients in immune inactive CHB were consecutively enrolled in Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital from 1995 to 2017. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the independent risk factors for HCC development. RESULTS: During the mean 63 months of follow-up, the incidence of HCC of study population was 4.5% (15/337). Patients who developed HCC were older, had more cirrhosis at baseline, and were more likely to experience ALT elevation>2 X upper limit of normal (ULN) during follow-up than those without HCC. In Cox regression analysis, increased ALT levels>2 X ULN during follow-up (hazard ratio [HR], 3.774; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.145-12.443; P=0.029] and presence of cirrhosis (HR, 11.768; 95% CI, 3.350-41.336; P<0.001) were identified as the independent factors for HCC in immune inactive CHB. With increasing number of risk factors, the respective cumulative incidence of HCC at 10 years was 6.3%, 8.8%, and 63.5%. CONCLUSIONS: Underlying cirrhosis and hepatic inflammation reflected by increased ALT levels>2 X ULN were significant predictors for HCC in immune inactive CHB. ALT elevation showed a synergistic effect in HCC development combined with cirrhosis. It suggests that patients with high serum ALT levels, especially those with cirrhosis, are required closer surveillance for HCC even in immune inactive CHB.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Clarithromycin resistance in Helicobacter pylori is associated with point mutations in the 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. We investigated the point mutations in the 23S rRNA genes of patients with clarithromycin-resistant H. pylori and compared the H. pylori eradication rates based on the point mutations. METHODS: A total of 431 adult patients with H. pylori infection were recruited in Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital in 2017 and 2018. Patients who did not have point mutations related to clarithromycin resistance and/or had clinically insignificant point mutations were treated with PAC (proton pump inhibitor, amoxicillin, clarithromycin) for seven days, while patients with clinically significant point mutations were treated with PAM (proton pump inhibitor, amoxicillin, metronidazole) for seven days. H. pylori eradication rates were compared. RESULTS: Sequencing-based detection of point mutations identified four mutations that were considered clinically significant (A2142G, A2142C, A2143G, A2143C). The clarithromycin resistance rate was 21.3% in the overall group of patients. A2143G was the most clinically significant point mutation (84/431, 19.5%), while T2182C was the most clinically insignificant point mutation (283/431, 65.7%). The overall H. pylori eradication rate was 83.7%, and the seven-day PAM-treated clarithromycin-resistance group showed a significantly lower eradication rate than the seven-day PAC-treated nonresistance group (ITT; 55.4% (51/92) vs. 74.3% (252/339), p = 0.001, PP; 66.2% (51/77) vs. 88.4% (252/285), p = 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: There were significantly lower eradication rates in the patients with clarithromycin-resistant H. pylori when treated with PAM for seven days. A future study comparing treatment regimens in clarithromycin-resistant H. pylori-infected patients may be necessary.

We present an integrated experimental and quantitative theoretical study of the mechanics of self-crosslinked, slightly charged, repulsive pNIPAM microgel suspensions over a very wide range of concentrations (c) that span the fluid, glassy and putative "soft jammed" regimes. In the glassy regime we measure a linear elastic dynamic shear modulus over 3 decades which follows an apparent power law concentration dependence G' ∼ c5.64, a variation that appears distinct from prior studies of crosslinked ionic microgel suspensions. At very high concentrations there is a sharp crossover to a nearly linear growth of the modulus. To theoretically understand these observations, we formulate an approach to address all three regimes within a single conceptual Brownian dynamics framework. A minimalist single particle description is constructed that allows microgel size to vary with concentration due to steric de-swelling effects. Using a Hertzian repulsion interparticle potential and a suite of statistical mechanical theories, quantitative predictions under quiescent conditions of microgel collective structure, dynamic localization length, elastic modulus, and the structural relaxation time are made. Based on a constant inter-particle repulsion strength parameter which is determined by requiring the theory to reproduce the linear elastic shear modulus over the entire concentration regime, we demonstrate good agreement between theory and experiment. Testable predictions are then made. We also measured nonlinear rheological properties with a focus on the yield stress and strain. A theoretical analysis with no adjustable parameters predicts how the quiescent structural relaxation time changes under deformation, and how the yield stress and strain change as a function of concentration. Reasonable agreement with our observations is obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to quantitatively understand structure, quiescent relaxation and shear elasticity, and nonlinear yielding of dense microgel suspensions using microscopic force based theoretical methods that include activated hopping processes. We expect our approach will be useful for other soft polymeric particle suspensions in the core-shell family.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify usefulness of 1-year of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression, on additional levothyroxine in patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). METHODS: Two-hundred consecutive patients who had received hemithyroidectomy February 2011 to March 2013, were enrolled, retrospectively. Group 1, only, was taking levothyroxine for a year, postoperatively. We evaluated postoperative hypothyroidism through serum TSH level, measured periodically. RESULTS: Postoperative TSH >10 was significantly different, at 13% and 25%, between two groups (P=0.036). Twenty patients in group 1, and 32 patients in group 2, received additional levothyroxine. Multivariate analysis showed that 1-year suppression, clinical thyroiditis, and preoperative TSH >2, were significantly associated with additional levothyroxine (OR 2.17, P=0.025 and OR 2.00, P=0.046 and OR 2.64, P=0.006). Too, 1-year TSH suppression, preoperative TSH >2, were also significantly associated with postoperative TSH >10 (OR 2.55, P=0.022 and OR 2.22, P=0.048). CONCLUSIONS: We suggest 1-year TSH suppression after hemithyroidectomy, for PTMC in patients with preoperative TSH >2 mU/L and clinical thyroiditis, to reduce additional levothyroxine.

This paper proposes an adaptive duty-cycled hybrid X-MAC (ADX-MAC) protocol for energy-efficient forest fire prediction. The Asynchronous sensor network protocol, X-MAC protocol, acquires additional environmental status details from each forest fire monitoring sensor for a given period, and then changes the duty-cycle sleep interval to efficiently calculate forest fire occurrence risk according to the environment. Performance was verified experimentally, and the proposed ADX-MAC protocol improved throughput by 19% and was 24% more energy efficient compared to the X-MAC protocol. The duty-cycle was shortened as forest fire probability increased, ensuring forest fires were detected at faster cycle rate.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Previous studies comparing 2-L polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based solution with ascorbic acid (PEG/Asc) with sodium picosulfate/magnesium citrate (SP/MC) drew inconclusive results. This study aimed to compare a 2-L-PEG/Asc with SP/MC by split method in bowel cleansing efficacy, tolerability, and safety and to identify factors influencing inadequate bowel preparation. METHOD: We performed a prospective randomized, endoscopist-blinded, single-center, controlled trial. The Aronchick scale and Ottawa bowel preparation scale (OBPS) were used to evaluate the bowel cleansing efficacy, and patients' tolerability and preferences were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS: In total, 223 patients were randomized to receive 2-L-PEG/Asc (n = 109) or SP/MC (n = 114). There was no significant difference in overall bowel cleansing efficacy between the two groups; however, when analyzing by individual segment, mean bowel cleansing efficacy of right colon showed a trend in favor of SP/MC group than in PEG/Asc group (OBPS; 1.55 ± 0.66 vs. 1.74 ± 0.88, P = 0.08). Furthermore, SP/MC was better tolerated than PEG/Asc based on ease of consumption and preference to receive the agents again in the future. Total adverse events were significantly lower in SP/MC group than PEG/Asc group (47.4 vs. 62.4%, P = 0.031). In multivariate analysis, later colonoscopic starting time was the only independent factor predicting inadequate bowel preparation (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.156-1.692, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in overall bowel cleansing efficacy between PEG/Asc and SP/MC; however, SP/MC showed better tolerability and safety profile than PEG/Asc. The independent factor for inadequate bowel preparation was later colonoscopic starting time when applied split method.

Nanohybrid anode materials for Na-ion batteries (NIBs) based on conversion and/or alloying reactions can provide significantly improved energy and power characteristics, while suffering from low Coulombic efficiency and unfavorable voltage properties. An NIB paper-type nanohybrid anode (PNA) based on tin sulfide nanoparticles and acid-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes is reported. In 1 m NaPF6 dissolved in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether as an electrolyte, the above PNA shows a high reversible capacity of ≈1200 mAh g-1 and a large voltage plateau corresponding to a capacity of ≈550 mAh g-1 in the low-voltage region of ≈0.1 V versus Na+ /Na, exhibiting high rate capabilities at a current rate of 1 A g-1 and good cycling performance over 250 cycles. In addition, the PNA exhibits a high first Coulombic efficiency of ≈90%, achieving values above 99% during subsequent cycles. Furthermore, the feasibility of PNA usage is demonstrated by full-cell tests with a reported cathode, which results in high specific energy and power values of ≈256 Wh kg-1 and 471 W kg-1 , respectively, with stable cycling.

Typical colloid-polymer composites have particle diameters much larger than the polymer mesh size, but successful integration of smaller colloids into a large-mesh network could allow for the realization of new colloidal states of spatial organization and faster colloid motion which can allow the possibility of switchable re-configuration of colloids or more dramatic stimuli-responsive property changes. Experimental realization of such composites requires solving non-trivial materials selection and fabrication challenges; key questions include composition regime maps of successful composites, the resulting structure and colloidal contact network, and the mechanical properties, in particular the ability to form a network and retain strain stiffening in the presence of colloids. Here, we study these fundamental questions by formulating composites with fluorescent (though not stimuli-responsive) carboxylate modified polystyrene/latex (CML) colloidal particles (diameters 200 nm and 1000 nm) in bovine fibrin networks (a semi-flexible biopolymer network with mesh size 1-5 µm). We describe and characterize two methods of composite preparation: adding colloids before fibrinogen polymerization (Method I), and electrophoretically driving colloids into a network already formed by fibrinogen polymerization (Method II). We directly image the morphology of colloidal and fibrous components with two-color fluorescent confocal microscopy under wet conditions and SEM of fixed dry samples. Mechanical properties are studied with shear and extensional rheology. Both fabrication methods are successful, though with trade-offs. Method I retains the nonlinear strain-stiffening and extensibility of the native fibrin network, but some colloid clustering is observed and fibrin network integrity is lost above a critical colloid concentration that depends on fibrinogen and thrombin concentration. Larger colloids can be included at higher volume fractions before massive aggregation occurs, indicating surface interactions as a limiting factor. Method II results in a loss of measurable strain-stiffening, but colloids are well dispersed and template along the fibrous scaffold. The results here, with insight into both structure and rheology, form a foundational understanding for the integration of other colloids, e.g. with stimuli-responsive functionalities, into semi-flexible networks.
