RESUMO

2D layered metallic graphite composites are promising electromagnetic wave absorption materials (EWAMs) for their combined properties of abundant interlayer free spaces, rich metallic polarized sites, and high conductivity, but the controllable synthesis remains rather challenging. Herein, a dual-step redox engineering strategy is developed by employing cobalt boron imidazolate framework (Co-BIF) to construct 2D CoNi-alloy embedded B, N-doped carbon layers (2D-CNC) as a promising EWAM. In the first step, a chemical etching oxidation process on Co-BIF is used to obtain an optimized 2D-CoNi-layered double hydroxide (2D-CoNi-LDH) intermediate and in the second, high-temperature calcination reduction is implemented to modify graphitization of the degree of the 2D-CNC. The obtained sample delivers superior reflection loss (RLmin) of -60.1 dB and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.24 GHz. The synergy mechanisms of interfacial/dipole polarization and magnetic coupling are in-depth evidenced by the hologram and Lorentz electron microscopy, revealing its significant contribution on multireflection and impedance matching. Further theoretical evaluation by COMSOL simulation in different fields based on the dynamic loss process toward the test ring reveals the in situ EW attenuation process. This work presents a strategy to develop multifunctional light-weight infrared stealthy aerogel with superior pressure-resistant, anti-corrosion, and heat-insulating properties for future applications.

OBJECTIVES: The deep circumflex iliac artery flap (DCIA) and vascularized fibular free flap (FFF) are mainstay flaps for maxillary defect reconstruction. This study compared the functional outcomes and success rates of these flaps to provide midface reconstruction strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maxillary defects reconstructed with DCIA or FFF at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology between May 2016 and May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The length, width, and height of the grafted bone segments; intermaxillary distance; buttress reconstruction rate (BRR); dental arch reconstruction rate (DAR); success rate; and dental implantation rate were compared. RESULTS: The DCIA and FFF groups had 33 and 27 patients, respectively. Success rate in the DCIA group was 93.94 % and 100 % in the FFF group. The DCIA length was less than that of FFF; however, the width and height were significantly larger. 87.10 % of cases in the DCIA group were classified as Brown class b and c, 51.85 % of cases in the FFF group were classified as Brown class d. The average BRR in the DCIA group was 69.89 % ± 16.05 %, which was significantly higher than that in the FFF group. A total of 38.7 % and 11.1 % patients in the DCIA and FFF groups, respectively, had completed implantation. CONCLUSION: DCIA has a greater width and height, and is more suitable for repairing Brown class b and c defects, providing sufficient bone for implantation, while the FFF is longer and more suitable for Brown class d defect reconstruction.

Peripheral nerve injuries can lead to sensory or motor deficits that have a serious impact on a patient's mental health and quality of life. Nevertheless, it remains a major clinical challenge to develop functional nerve conduits as an alternative to autologous grafts. We applied reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a bioactive conductive material to impart electrophysiological properties to a 3D printed scaffold and the application of a pulsed magnetic field to excite the formation of microcurrents and induce nerve regeneration.In vitrostudies showed that the nerve scaffold and the pulsed magnetic field made no effect on cell survival, increased S-100ßprotein expression, enhanced cell adhesion, and increased the expression level of nerve regeneration-related mRNAs.In vivoexperiments suggested that the protocol was effective in promoting nerve regeneration, resulting in functional recovery of sciatic nerves in rats, when they were damaged close to that of the autologous nerve graft, and increased expression of S-100ß, NF200, and GAP43. These results indicate that rGO composite nerve scaffolds combined with pulsed magnetic field stimulation have great potential for peripheral nerve rehabilitation.

The design of electromagnetic wave absorbing materials (EWAMs) has aroused great attention with the express development of electromagnetic devices, which pose a severe EM pollution risk to human health. Herein, an Ag-doped MoCx composite was designed and constructed through a UV-light-induced self-reduction process. The UV-reduction time was controlled on the α-MoC polymer for 0.5-2 hours for modifying different amounts of Ag. As a result, α-MoC@Ag-1.5 exhibited the strongest RLmin of -56.51 dB at 8.8 GHz under a thickness of 3.0 mm and the widest EAB of 4.96 GHz (12.16-17.12 GHz) covering a substantial portion of the Ku-band at a thickness of 2.0 mm due to the synergy of the conductivity loss and abundant interfacial polarization sites. Additionally, a new strategy for computer simulation technology was proposed to simulate substantial radar cross-sectional reduction values with real far-field conditions, whereby absorbing coatings with α-MoC@Ag-1.5 were proved to contribute to a remarkable radar cross-sectional reduction of 37.4 dB m2.

The rigid hull encasing Tartary buckwheat seeds necessitates a laborious dehulling process before flour milling, resulting in considerable nutrient loss. Investigation of lignin composition is pivotal in understanding the structural properties of tartary buckwheat seeds hulls, as lignin is key determinant of rigidity in plant cell walls, thus directly impacting the dehulling process. Here, the lignin composition of seed hulls from 274 Tartary buckwheat accessions is analyzed, unveiling a unique lignin chemotype primarily consisting of G lignin, a common feature in gymnosperms. Furthermore, the hardness of the seed hull showed a strong negative correlation with the S lignin content. Genome-wide detection of selective sweeps uncovered that genes governing the biosynthesis of S lignin, specifically two caffeic acid O-methyltransferases (COMTs) and one ferulate 5-hydroxylases, are selected during domestication. This likely contributed to the increased S lignin content and decreased hardness of seed hulls from more domesticated varieties. Genome-wide association studies identified robust associations between FtCOMT1 and the accumulation of S lignin in seed hull. Transgenic Arabidopsis comt1 plants expressing FtCOMT1 successfully reinstated S lignin content, confirming its conserved function across plant species. These findings provide valuable metabolic and genetic insights for the potential redesign of Tartary buckwheat seed hulls.

Ceria (CeO2 ) becomes a promising candidate as electromagnetic wave absorbing materials (EWAMs) for their abundant natural source, rich oxygen vacancy, charge conversion, and electron transfer abilities. However, it remains challenging to regulate its nanoscale and atom-scale composition to optimize the absorbing performance and develop high-performance commercial devices. Herein, a facile method to large-scale synthesis CeO2 @Co-x% (x = 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) series EWAMs with diverse amounts of decorated CoOx is presented. By modulating the ratio of doped CoOx , a rational hetero-interface is created in CeO2 @Co-9% to enhance natural and exchange resonances, improving magnetic loss capability and optimizing impedance matching. Doped CoOx promotes the charge accumulation, interfacial polarization, and multiple scattering of the CeO2 for strengthening the EW absorption and attenuation, which display superb minimum reflective loss (RLmin ) of -74.4 dB with a wide effective absorbing bandwidth (EAB) of 5.26 GHz. Furthermore, a dual crosslinking strategy is employed to fabricate CeO2 @Co-9% into an aerogel device with integrated lightweight, heat insulation, compression resistance, and fame-retardant functions. This work presents an excellent example of large-scale fast synthesis of high-performance CeO2 -based EWAMs and multiplication 3D devices.

Traditional electromagnetic absorbing materials (EWAMs) are usually single functions and can easily affect their performance in diverse application scenarios. Effective integration of EWAMs into multiple function components is a valuable strategy to achieve maximum absorption and multifunction performance while maintaining their indispensable physical and chemical properties. In this work, the polyoxometalates (POMs) serving as "guests" are embedded within the Co-MOFs to construct 3d/4d-bimetallic based crystalline precursors of dielectric/magnetic synergistic system. The proper pyrolysis temperature induced the homogeneously distributed metallic Co and MoCx hetero-units into carbon matrix with modified porous defect engineering to enhance electromagnetic wave (EW). Owing to the brilliant synergistic effect of polarization, magnetic loss, and impedance matching, the superior RLmin of -47.72 dB at 11.76 GHz at the thickness of 2.0 mm and a wide adequate absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.58 GHz (7.44-12.02 GHz) covered the whole X-band at the thickness of 2.5 mm for η-MoC/Co@NC-800 are observed. More importantly, the resulting MoCx hybrid polyimide (MCP) aerogel exhibits desirable properties such as structural robustness, nonflammability, excellent thermal insulation, and self-cleaning capabilities that are comparable to those of commercially available products. This work offers inspiration and strategy for creating multipurpose microwave absorbers with intricate structural designs.

BACKGROUND: One-stage jaw reconstruction with fibular flap and prosthetic rehabilitation restores bony and dental continuity simultaneously. It was also called as "jaw-in-a-day (JIAD)" technique. However, bone volume and height of fibular flap may be insufficient for dental implant insertion. The provision of a considerable amount of bone makes an iliac flap the ideal choice in these cases. We present the first case report to document the use of one-stage jaw reconstruction and prosthetic rehabilitation with the iliac flap. CASE PRESENTATION: We modified the conventional JIAD workflow to make it suitable for iliac flap. Two cases were presented who both underwent segmental mandibulectomy for ameloblastoma. Virtual surgical planning was performed in all cases. The iliac crest was positioned upward to provide cortical bone for achieving primary stability of dental implants. Similar to the "all-on-4" procedure, the iliac bone was placed 12 to 15 mm below the occlusal plane to create adequate space for the implant-retained prosthesis. Immediate implant-based dental rehabilitation was performed at same stage. The surgery was successful in all cases without any short-term complications. In the first postoperative week, patients were given a liquid diet through a nasal feeding tube. The liquid diet is advised until 1 month after the surgery. Thereafter, a soft diet is recommended. Patients were advised to resume routine mastication and normal diet 3 months after the surgery. Peri-implantitis occurred in one patient, and additional gingival graft was required. Postoperative function and esthetics were satisfactory at the last follow-up visit. CONCLUSIONS: One-stage jaw reconstruction and prosthetic rehabilitation with the iliac flap are safe and useful for restoring postoperative function and esthetics. It should be used in more cases with a longer follow-up in further studies.

OBJECTIVE: Secreted phospholipase A2 Group IB (sPLA2GIB) regulates the release of arachidonic acid, prostaglandins, and other inflammatory lipid mediators. Although it has been well involved in extensive inflammatory diseases, its specific mechanism in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of sPLA2GIB in the pathophysiology of CRSwNP. METHODS: Quantitative PCR, immunofluorescence staining, western blotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to analyze the expression of sPLA2s, phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R), and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in nasal samples. Human nasal epithelial cells (HNECs) were cultured at an air-liquid interface (ALI) and stimulated with various cytokines. The human mast cell line HMC-1 was stimulated with sPLA2GIB, and the expression of PGD2 and cytokines in the culture supernatant was detected by ELISA. RESULTS: The mRNA and protein levels of sPLA2GIB were significantly higher in eosinophilic CRSwNP than in control tissues. sPLA2GIB was predominantly expressed in the nasal epithelial cells. PLA2R mRNA and protein levels were upregulated in both eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic CRSwNP compared with the control groups. IL-4, IL-13, TNF-α, and IL-1ß upregulated the expression of sPLA2GIB in ALI-cultured HNECs. sPLA2GIB induced PGD2 and IL-13 production in HMC-1 cells in a hydrolytic activity-independent manner. PGD2 protein expression was elevated in tissue homogenates of eosinophilic CRSwNP, and PGD2 upregulated the expression of IL-13 in HMC-1 cells. CONCLUSION: Increased secretion of sPLA2GIB by epithelial cells may promote eosinophilic inflammation in CRSwNP by enhancing PGD2 and IL-13 production in mast cells via binding to PLA2R. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the differences in the accuracy of immediate intraoral, immediate extraoral, and delayed dental implant placement with surgical guides (static computer-aided implant surgery) in patients treated with mandibular reconstruction. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. The patients were divided into three groups: immediate intraoral placement (IIO), immediate extraoral placement (IEO), and delayed placement (DEL). Four variables were used to compare the planned and actual implant positions: angular deviation, three-dimensional (3D) deviation at the entry point of the implant, 3D deviation at the apical point of the implant, and depth deviation. RESULTS: The angular deviation was significantly higher in the IIO group than in the IEO (p < .05) and DEL (p < .05) groups. The 3D deviation at the entry point was significantly higher in the IIO group than in the IEO (p < .05) and DEL (p < .01) groups. The 3D deviation at the apical point was significantly higher in the IIO group than in the IEO (p < .01) and DEL (p < .01) groups. The depth deviation was significantly higher in the IIO group than in the IEO (p < .05) and DEL (p < .05) groups. There was no statistical difference between the IEO and DEL group in angular and 3D deviation. CONCLUSION: With surgical guides, among the different approaches for implant placement, delayed implant placement remains the most accurate approach for patients treated with mandibular reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgical bone reconstruction is challenging in cases of anterior maxillary defects because of the presence of residual teeth. The study analyzed the method and feasibility of using vascularized bone flaps to reconstruct anterior maxillary defects. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 15 patients treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School, and Hospital of Stomatology between November 2017 and January 2023. RESULTS: A total of 14 patients were successfully reconstructed using the digital technique: 6 deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flaps and 8 fibular free flaps. Palatal and buccal pedicle paths were used in 4 and 10 cases, respectively, for vascular anastomosis. The implant coverage rates of the DCIA and fibular free flaps were 87.2% and 92.6%, respectively (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Anterior maxillary defects reconstructed with the DCIA and fibular free flaps are reliable methods. Furthermore, the palatal and buccal paths are recommended for vascular anastomosis.

Purpose: The development of osteoarthritis (OA) has been linked to mechanical factors. Studies suggest that periodic mechanical stress (PMS) may be a factor contributing to cartilage repair and the onset of OA. Therefore, this study was designed to explore the effects and underlying mechanisms of PMS on OA development. Patients and Methods: Firstly, surgery and interleukin (IL)-1ß were used for the establishment of rat/cell models of OA, respectively. Subsequently, activating transcription factor (ATF) 3 expression was knocked down in OA rats, and OA chondrocytes were treated with different heights (0, 1, 2, 4, 8 cm) of PMS or si-ATF. Safranin O staining was used to observe the histological changes in the rat knee joint, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to detect levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-6, and IL-8 in vivo and in vitro. Further, the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the rat knee joint was assessed immunohistochemistry. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate chondrocyte apoptosis. Lastly, Western blot was performed to detect the expression of related proteins of the protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway and ECM. Results: The OA rat model was successfully constructed. Further experiments indicated that the knockdown of ATF3 not only alleviated joint swelling, pain, inflammatory response and pathological damage, but also promoted ECM synthesis and the phosphorylation of Akt in OA rats. In vitro experiments showed that PMS (4 cm) effectively inhibited cell apoptosis, decreased the levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8, promoted ECM synthesis, and activated the Akt signaling pathway in osteoarthritic chondrocytes. However, ATF3 overexpression reversed the positive effects of PMS on osteoarthritic chondrocytes. Conclusion: PMS can effectively inhibit the development of OA, and its protective effects may be attributed to the down-regulation of ATF3 expression and activation of the Akt signaling pathway.

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) based on metal organic framework (MOF) and polymer mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have shown great promotions in both lithium-ion conduction and interfacial resistance in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the unwanted structural evolution and the and the obscure electrochemical reaction mechanism among two phases limit their further optimization and commercial application. Herein, fluorine-modified zirconium MOF with diverse F-quantities is synthesized, denoted as Zr-BDC-Fx (x = 0, 2, 4), to assemble high performance quais-solid-state electrolytes (QSSEs) with PVDF-HFP. The chemical complexation of F-sites in Zr-BDC-F4 stabilized PVDF-HFP chains in ß-phase and disordered oscillation with enhanced charge transfer and Li transmit property. Besides, the porous confinement and electronegativity of F-groups enhanced the capture and dissociation of TFSI- anions and the homogeneous deposition of LiF solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), promoting the high-efficient transport of Li+ ions and inhibiting the growth of Li dendrites. The superb specific capacities in high-loaded Li.

OBJECTIVES: To reveal the change patterns of the facial soft tissue after applying mandibular reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 16 Patients with mandibular benign tumor were recruited in this retrospective study. For all patients, segmental mandibular osteotomy and concurrent reconstruction using vascularized iliac flap were conducted. The soft tissue thickness of patients' lower face was measured with CT scans before surgery, 1 week, 6 months and 1 year after surgery. The time-dependent changes of tissue thickness were analyzed. RESULTS: The most significant tissue swelling was 28.86%, at 1 week after the surgery. The average increase of tissue thickness was 4.78 ± 5.30 mm across patient. After 1 year of the surgery, tissue thickness decreased to the level before operation or the level of the healthy side. The thickness of the low-density tissue fluctuated mildly, while the thickness of the high-density tissue fluctuated significantly. The disuse atrophy of the masseter occurred 1 week after the surgery, and was reversed after 1 year. The removal of the submandibular gland caused depression in submandibular area, which intensified over time. CONCLUSION: Across patients, soft tissue thickness in the lower face after mandibular osteotomy and reconstruction increased significantly 1 week after the surgery, and decreased over time. After 1 year, tissue thickness went back to the pre-surgery level, where matched up with the healthy side. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We documented the change patterns of the facial soft tissue after mandibular reconstruction. These results can help improve the planning of virtual surgeries and the timing for aesthetic assessment. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: ChiCTR2100054103.

Atomic-level structural editing is a promising way for facile synthesis and accurately constructing dielectric/magnetic synergistic attenuated hetero-units in electromagnetic wave absorbers (EWAs), but it is hard to realize. Herein, utilizing the rapid explosive volume expansion of the CoFe-bimetallic energetic metallic triazole framework (CoFe@E-MTF) during the heat treatment, the effective absorption bandwidth and the maximum absorption intensity of a series of atomic CoFe-inserted hierarchical porous carbon (CoFe@HPC) EWAs can be modified under the diverse synthetic temperature. Under the filler loading of 15 wt%, the fully covered X and Ku bands at 3 and 2.5 mm for CoFe@HPC800 and the superb minimum reflection loss (RLmin ) of -53.15 dB and specific reflection loss (SRL) of -101.24 dB mg-1 mm-1 for CoFe@HPC1000 are achieved. More importantly, the single-atomic chemical bonding among Co─Fe on the nanopores is captured by extended X-ray absorption fine structure, which reveals the formation mechanism of nanopore-confined vortical dipoles and magnetic domains. This work heralds the infinite possibilities of atomic editing EWA in the future.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) preservation on donor site morbidity and function after harvesting a vascularized iliac bone flap (VIBF). METHODS: Patients who underwent jaws reconstruction with VIBF were divided into a maintaining the anterior superior iliac spine (MASIS) group and a not maintaining the anterior superior iliac spine (NMASIS) group. Pain, tenderness, sensory deficit, gait disturbance, and function of the donor site were evaluated before and after the operation. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were included in this study, of which 18 were in the MASIS group. The incidence of sensory deficit in the MASIS group was significantly lower than that in the NMASIS group (50.0% vs. 86.7%, p = 0.010). Pain, tenderness, gait disturbance, and function did not differ statistically between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Except for sensory deficit, ASIS preservation has minimal impact on donor site morbidity and function.

BACKGROUND: Implant-supported dentures have become an essential means of restoring occlusal function after jaw reconstruction. Bone mineral density (BMD) may influence the success rate of implant denture restorations. This study aimed to explore whether the Hounsfield unit (HU) value can be used to monitor the changing trend of fibular BMD after jaw reconstruction. RESULTS: A total of 54 patients who underwent maxillar/mandibular reconstruction with a fibula flap were included in this study. There was a significant correlation between the HU value and BMD at 1 week, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery, and both were significantly correlated with follow-up time. The difference between each pair of absorption rates (DAR) was less than 10% in 66.7% and 75.9% of patients at 3 and 6 months; however, the DAR was more than 20% in 12% and 13.8% of patients at 3 and 6 months, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant correlation between HU value and BMD. The HU value can be used to roughly reflect the fibular BMD changing trend in a group of patients as opposed to an individual, and the HU value is not equivalent to BMD. As the most abundant infiltrating immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME), tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are pivotal in tumor development and treatment. The present investigation endeavors to explore the potential of M1 macrophage-related genes (MRGs) as biomarkers for assessing risk in individuals with osteosarcoma. RNA-sequence data and clinical data were derived from TCGA and GEO databases. The CIBERSORT method was utilized to discern subtypes of tumor-infiltrating immune cells. Identification of MRGs was achieved through Pearson correlation analysis. A prognostic risk model for MRGs was developed using Cox and LASSO regression analyses. A tripartite gene signature comprising CD37, GABRD, and ARHGAP25 was an independent prognostic indicator and was employed to develop a risk score model. The internal and external validation cohort confirmed the results. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was determined for survival periods of 1 year, three years, and five years, yielding values of 0.746, 0.839, and 0.850, respectively. The C-index of the risk score was found to be superior to clinicopathological factors. GO/KEGG enrichment showed that the differences between high- and low-risk groups were predominantly associated with immune response pathways. Immune-related analysis related to proportions of immune cells, immune function, and expression levels of immune checkpoint genes all showed differences between the high- and low-risk groups. The qRT-PCR and Western blotting results indicate that CD37 expression was markedly higher in MG63 and U2OS cell lines when compared to normal osteoblast hFOB1.19. In U2OS cell line, GABRD expression levels were significantly upregulated. ARHGAP25 expression levels were elevated in both 143B and U2OS cell lines. In summary, utilizing a macrophage genes signature demonstrates efficacy in predicting both the prognosis and therapy response of OS. Additionally, immune analysis confirms a correlation between the risk score and the tumor microenvironment. Our findings, therefore, provide a cogent account for the disparate prognoses observed among patients and furnish a justification for further inquiry into biomarkers and anti-tumor treatment strategies.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical characteristics of oral and maxillofacial tumors in children and adolescents. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients who had oral and maxillofacial tumors under the age of 18 years and were treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from January 1990 to July 2021 (31 y). Their general conditions, pathological diagnosis, gender, age, and anatomical location were counted to analyze their morbidity and composition characteristics. RESULTS: This study contained 5405 cases, including 2903 male patients and 2502 female patients, with a median age of 9 years. Peak incidence was observed in the 14 to 18 years age group. The mandible (22.15%), maxilla (11.75%), and tongue (9.25%) were the most common sites of incidence. Malignant and intermediate type tumors accounted for 13.04%, benign tumors and tumor-like lesions for 55.67%, most often occurs in the maxillofacial bone, of which fibro-osseous lesions constitute an important part. Cysts accounted for 31.29%. Among the tumors occurring in the jaws, the most common malignant type was sarcoma, and ameloblastoma was the most common benign tumor. Malignant jaw tumors were mostly treated by resection, 10.64% by fibular flap reconstruction. While benign jaw tumors and tumor-like lesions were mostly treated by resection or curettage. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of anatomical location and pathological types of oral and maxillofacial tumors in children has certain characteristics, so that the selection of their treatment options is different from that of adults due to the consideration of the growth and developmental characteristics of children.

Neuroendocrine differentiation (NED) characterized by the expression of neuroendocrine markers, such as chromogranin A (CgA), is frequently observed in advanced prostate cancer (PCa), the prognostic significance of which is still controversial. Here we specifically addressed the issue of the potential prognostic value of CgA expression in advanced-stage PCa patients with distant metastases and its change over time from metastatic hormone-sensitive (mHSPC) to metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). CgA expression was assessed immunohistochemically in initial biopsies of mHSPC, as well as in second biopsies of mCRPC in sixty-eight patients, and its correlation with prognosis (together with conventional clinicopathologic parameters) was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard model. We found that CgA expression was an independent adverse prognostic factor for both mHSPC (CgA positivity ≥ 1%, HR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.04-4.26, p = 0.031) and mCRPC (CgA ≥ 10%, HR = 20.19, 95% CI: 3.04-329.9, p = 0.008). CgA positivity generally increased from mHSPC to mCRPC and was a negative prognosticator. The assessment of CgA expression may help with the clinical evaluation of advanced-stage patients with distant metastases.
