RESUMO

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, µ-biphenyl-4,4'-di-sulfonato-bis-(aqua-lithium), [Li2(C12H8O6S2)(H2O)2] or Li2[Bph(SO3)2](H2O)2, consists of an Li ion, half of the diphenyl-4,4'-di-sulfonate [Bph(SO3 -)2] ligand, and a water mol-ecule. The Li ion exhibits a four-coordinate tetra-hedral geometry with three oxygen atoms of the Bph(SO3 -)2 ligands and a water mol-ecule. The tetra-hedral LiO4 units, which are inter-connected by biphenyl moieties, form a layer structure parallel to (100). These layers are further connected by hydrogen-bonding inter-actions to yield a three-dimensional network.

Prismanes have been attracting interest for nearly 50 years because of their geometric symmetry, highly strained structures, and unique applications due to their high carbon densities and bulky structures. Although [3]-, [4]-, and [5]-prismanes have been synthesised, [6]-prismanes and their derivatives remain elusive. Herein, fluorine chemistry, molecular mechanics, molecular orbital package, and density functional theory calculations were used to design and implement the photoisomerisation of octafluoro[2.2]paracyclophane (selected based on the good overlap of its lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals and short distance between the benzene rings) into octafluoro-[6]-prismane. Specifically, a dilute solution of the above precursor in CH3CN/H2O/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (2:1:8, v/v/v) solution was irradiated with ultraviolet light, with the formation of the desired product confirmed through the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The product was thermally stable in solution but not under work-up conditions, which complicated the further analysis and single-crystal preparation. The key criteria for successful photoisomerisation were the presence of fluorine substituents in the cyclophane structure and DMSO in the solvent system. A more stable derivative design requires the isolation of prismane products. The proposed fluorination-based synthetic strategy is applicable to developing novel high-strain molecules/materials with three-dimensional skeletons.

In this study, we successfully synthesized the double perovskite oxide Cd2FeReO6 by using a high-temperature and high-pressure method. The crystal structure was confirmed to belong to the P21/n space group, exhibiting approximately 68% ordering of Fe3+ and Re5+ ions at the perovskite B-site with the remaining regions showing antisite disorder. The measured Curie temperature of Cd2FeReO6 was 460 K, slightly lower than expected but still significantly above room temperature. Remarkably, Cd2FeReO6 displayed a remarkable low-field butterfly type tunneling magnetoresistance of -23% (-37% between the lowest and the largest values) at 5 K and 90 kOe, the highest among the A2FeReO6 (A = Ca, Sr, Pb, Ba) family. First-principles calculations provided insight into the origin of this observed magnetoresistance behavior, revealing Cd2FeReO6's half-metallic ferrimagnetic nature. This research extends our understanding of the double perovskite family and emphasizes its potential significance in the domains of spintronics and materials science. The exploration of differing magnetoresistance behaviors between Cd2FeReO6 and Ca2FeReO6, along with the influence of antisite disorder in Cd2FeReO6, opens intriguing avenues for further research.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic fat is fat that accumulates in or around specific organs or compartments of the body including myocardium. The clinical features of type 2 diabetes patients with high fat accumulation in the myocardium remain unknown. Moreover, little is known about the influence of myocardial fat accumulation in type 2 diabetes on coronary artery disease and cardiac dysfunction. We aimed to clarify the clinical features, including cardiac functions, of type 2 diabetes patients with myocardial fat accumulation. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled type 2 diabetes patients who underwent ECG-gated coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan examinations within 1 year of CCTA from January 2000 to March 2021. High fat accumulation in the myocardium was defined as the low mean myocardial CT value of three regions of interest, and the associations between CT values and clinical characteristics or cardiac functions were assessed. RESULTS: In total, 124 patients were enrolled (72 males and 52 females). The mean age was 66.6 years, the mean BMI was 26.2 kg/m2, the mean ejection fraction (EF) was 67.6%, and the mean myocardial CT value was 47.7 Hounsfield unit. A significant positive correlation was found between myocardial CT value and EF (r = 0.3644, p = 0.0004). The multiple regression analyses also showed that myocardial CT value was independently associated with EF (estimate, 0.304; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.092 to 0.517; p = 0.0056). Myocardial CT value showed significant negative correlations with BMI, visceral fat area and subcutaneous fat area (r = - 0.1923, - 0.2654, and -0.3569, respectively, p < 0.05). In patients who were ≥ 65 years or female, myocardial CT value showed significant positive correlations with not only EF (r = 0.3542 and 0.4085, respectively, p < 0.01) but also early lateral annular tissue Doppler velocity (Lat e') (r = 0.5148 and 0.5361, respectively, p < 0.05). The multiple regression analyses showed that myocardial CT value was independently associated with EF and Lat e' in these subgroups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with type 2 diabetes, especially in elderly or female patients, who had more myocardial fat had more severe left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunctions. Reducing myocardial fat accumulation may be a therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes patients.

Inclusion structures incorporating more than one guest molecule are elusive because confinement alters their molecular properties. We report the solid-state characterization of an inclusion complex comprising two γ-cyclodextrins and two [Cu(2-pyridinemethanolate)(2-pyridinemethanol)]PF6 units. Quantum calculation reveals that interfragment charge transfer occurs. The confined Cu fragment and the unincluded "linear chain [Cu(2-pyridinemethanolate)(2-pyridinemethanol)]PF6" exhibit different properties.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) could cause type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We immunohistochemically analyzed pancreatic specimens from three individuals with ICI-related T1D, and their histopathological data were compared those from three patients who had received ICI therapy but did not develop T1D (non-T1D) and seven normal glucose-tolerant subjects as control subjects. All ICI-related T1D patients had susceptible HLA haplotypes. In ICI-related T1D, the ß-cell area decreased and the α-cell area increased compared with non-T1D and control subjects. The number of CD3-positive cells around islets increased in ICI-related T1D and non-T1D compared with control subjects, while the number of CD68-positive cells around islets increased in ICI-related T1D compared with non-T1D and control subjects. The expression ratios of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) on islets decreased in non-T1D and almost completely disappeared in ICI-related T1D, while PD-L1 expression was observed in most cells of pancreatic islets in control subjects. This study, therefore, indicates that ICI therapy itself could reduce PD-L1 expression on islets in all subjects, which may be related to ß-cell vulnerability. In addition, we showed that absence of PD-L1 expression on ß-cells, genetic susceptibility, and infiltration of macrophages as well as T lymphocytes around islets might be responsible for T1D onset.

Iron complexes bearing 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene were synthesized and applied to the reaction with hydrosilane and homogeneous catalytic hydrosilylation of aromatic ketones and aldehydes. Addition of a free carbene to a solution of Fe(CO)4Br2 yielded an octahedral, diamagnetic and cationic iron(II) complex [Fe(1,2,3-triazolylidene)(CO)2Br]+. Pyrolysis of the dicarbonyl complex eliminated the two CO ligands to form a paramagnetic four-coordinate complex. A theoretical study using DFT calculations indicated that the spin state changed from singlet to quintet during ligand elimination. Investigations of the successful hydrosilylation of acetophenone and benzaldehyde derivatives using MIC-iron(II) bromide suggested the importance of the base for efficient conversion in the catalytic process. The bromide-to-hydride exchange reaction, transmetallation, of MIC-iron(II) bromide in the presence of KOtBu and HSi(OEt)3 which could occur in the initial process of hydrosilylation was proposed, and supported by a theoretical study.

Background and objective: Pancreatic fat is a form of ectopic fat. Lipid droplets (LDs) are also observed in ß cells; however, the pathophysiological significance, especially for ß cell function, has not been elucidated. Our aim was to assess LD accumulation in ß cells in various stages of glucose intolerance and to clarify its relationship with clinical and histological parameters. Methods: We examined 42 Japanese patients who underwent pancreatectomy. The BODIPY493/503-positive (BODIPY-positive) area in ß cells was measured in pancreatic sections from 32 patients. The insulin granule numbers were counted in an additional 10 patients using electron microscopy. Results: The BODIPY-positive area in ß cells in preexisting type 2 diabetes patients was higher than that in normal glucose tolerance patients (p = 0.031). The BODIPY-positive area in ß cells was positively correlated with age (r = 0.45, p = 0.0097), HbA1c (r = 0.38, p = 0.0302), fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.37, p = 0.045), and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (r = 0.41, p = 0.049) and negatively correlated with an increase in the C-peptide immunoreactivity level by the glucagon test (r = -0.59, p = 0.018). The ratio of mature insulin granule number to total insulin granule number was reduced in the patients with rich LD accumulation in ß cells (p = 0.039). Conclusions: Type 2 diabetes patients had high LD accumulation in ß cells, which was associated with insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, aging and ß cell dysfunction involving decreased mature insulin granules.

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are archetypes of microporous coordination polymers/metal-organic frameworks whose versatile composition allows for diverse functionalities. However, developments in PBAs have centred solely on their crystalline state, and the glassy state of PBAs has not been explored. Here we describe the preparation of the glassy state of PBAs via a mechanically induced crystal-to-glass transformation and explore their properties. The preservation of short-range metal-ligand-metal connectivity is confirmed, enabling the framework-based functionality and semiconductivity in the glass. The transformation also generates unconventional CN- vacancies, followed by the reduction of metal sites. This leads to significant porosity enhancement in recrystallised PBA, enabled by further accessibility of isolated micropores. Finally, mechanical stability under stress for successful vitrification is correlated to defect contents and interstitial water. Our results demonstrate how mechanochemistry provides opportunities to explore glassy states of molecular framework materials in which the stable liquid state is absent.

Estrogen is known to increase exogenous corticosteroid levels. In this case, a 27-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital for examination of an adrenal tumor and was diagnosed with Cushing syndrome. Resection of the tumor resulted in secondary adrenal insufficiency. She also developed microcytic anemia due to hypermenorrhea, which was masked by Cushing syndrome. An oral contraceptive was administered for the treatment of hypermenorrhea, but this led to a marked increase in serum cortisol and the reduction of plasma adenocorticotropic hormone, disturbing the recovery of the adrenal function. Attention is required when oral contraceptives are used to treat hypermenorrhea masked by Cushing syndrome.

RESUMO

Holography was originally invented for the purpose of magnifying electron microscopic images without spherical aberration and has been applied to photography for recording and reconstructing three-dimensional objects. Although it has been attracting scientists and ordinary people in the world, it is still a technology in science fiction movies. In this review, we discuss a new version of holography that uses surface plasmons on thin metal film. We discuss conventional holography and its drawbacks, such as overlapping of ghost and background due to the contribution of unnecessary diffraction and monochromacy for avoiding the unwanted diffraction components of different colors. Surface-plasmon holography is a version of near-field holography to overcome drawbacks of conventional holography. Comparison with conventional and volume holography for color reconstruction is discussed in reciprocal lattice space. Localized mode of surface plasmons and meta-surface holography are also reviewed, and feature perspectives and issues are discussed.

Plasmonic Ag nano-assemblies moving in a living cell were employed to visualize the spatiotemporal change of intracellular pH by surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Ag nano-assemblies were functionalized with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (p-MBA) to monitor the variation of the surrounding pH. SERS spectra from the functionalized nano-assemblies that were transported in a cell were recorded to estimate the local pH on the pathways travelled by the nano-assemblies. 3D nanoparticle tracking and SERS measurements were simultaneously performed to trace the pH dynamics with a spatial accuracy of several tens of nanometers and a temporal resolution of 200 ms, which are sufficient to reveal pH changes associated with intracellular transportation. The pH trajectory of the functionalized nanoparticle can be used to visualize the dynamic change of the chemical environment caused by organelle interactions, such as endosomal trafficking and lysosomal fusion. This breakthrough creates a new paradigm for intracellular analysis using SERS and reveals new capability for rapid use of SERS in biological analysis.

Detailed spatial information of low-molecular weight compound distribution, especially in the brain, is crucial to understanding their mechanism of actions. Imaging techniques that can directly visualize drugs in the brain at a high resolution will complement existing tools for drug distribution analysis. Here, we performed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) imaging using a bioorthogonal alkyne tag to visualize drugs directly in situ at a high resolution. Focusing on the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor S-citalopram (S-Cit), which possesses a nitrile group, we substituted an alkynyl group into its structure and synthesized alkynylated S-Cit (Alk-S-Cit). The brain transitivity and the serotonin reuptake inhibition of Alk-S-Cit were not significantly different as compared with S-Cit. Alk-S-Cit was visualized in the coronal mouse brain section using SERS imaging with silver nanoparticles. Furthermore, SERS imaging combined with fluorescence microscopy allowed Alk-S-Cit to be visualized in the adjacent neuronal membranes, as well as in the brain vessel and parenchyma. Therefore, our multimodal imaging technique is an effective method for detecting low-molecular weight compounds in their original tissue environment and can potentially offer additional information regarding the precise spatial distribution of such drugs.

The reaction of Fe(OAc)2 and Hbpypz with neutral TCNQ results in the formation of [Fe2 (bpypz)2 (TCNQ)2 ](TCNQ)2 (1), in which Hbpypz=3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazole and TCNQ=7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane. Crystal packing of 1 with uncoordinated TCNQ and π-π stacking of bpypz- ligands produces an extended two-dimensional supramolecular coordination assembly. Temperature dependence of the dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate that 1 undergoes an abrupt spin crossover (SCO) with thermal spin transition temperatures of 339 and 337 K for the heating and cooling modes, respectively, resulting in a thermal hysteresis of 2 K. Remarkably, the temperature dependence of dc electrical transport exhibits a transition that coincides with thermal SCO, demonstrating the thermally induced magnetic and electrical bistability of 1, strongly correlating magnetism with electrical conductivity. This outstanding feature leads to thermally induced simultaneous switching of magnetism and electrical conductivity and a magnetoresistance effect.

Three-dimensional hierarchical morphologies widely exist in natural and biomimetic materials, which impart preferential functions including liquid and mass transport, energy conversion, and signal transmission for various applications. While notable progress has been made in the design and manufacturing of various hierarchical materials, the state-of-the-art approaches suffer from limited materials selection, high costs, as well as low processing throughput. Herein, by harnessing the configurable elastic crack engineering-controlled formation and configuration of cracks in elastic materials-an effect normally avoided in various industrial processes, we report the development of a facile and powerful technique that enables the faithful transfer of arbitrary hierarchical structures with broad material compatibility and structural and functional integrity. Our work paves the way for the cost-effective, large-scale production of a variety of flexible, inexpensive, and transparent 3D hierarchical and biomimetic materials.

Host-guest materials based on coordination polymers (CPs) are currently emerging as potential candidates for battery applications. In this context, we describe the preparation of three-dimensional network structures containing BF4 anions and water molecules in the one-dimensional (1D) channels via hydrothermal reactions between Cu(BF4)2 and 4,4'-bipyridine or 1,2-di-4-pyridylethylene. A systematic characterization of the obtained CPs using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption fine structure, and an electrochemical test was performed. The results showed that the BF4 anions were electrochemically reduced to BF3 in the cavities of the CPs, with concomitant elimination of a leaving fluoride at room temperature. Using this electrochemical property, a prototype battery, in which the CPs act as the anode and graphite as the cathode, was demonstrated. The cell exhibited a practical discharge potential of ∼1.5 V. This constitutes the first demonstration of CPs showing electrochemical B-F bond activation in the 1D channels and rocking-chair-type fluoride insertion and extraction by changes in the electric potential.

Intracellular pH is one of the key factors for understanding various biological processes in biological cells. Plasmonic gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively studied for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications for pH sensing as a local pH probe in a living cell. However, the SERS performance of NPs depends on material, size, and shape, which can be controlled by chemical synthesis. Here, we synthesized 18 types of gold and silver NPs with different morphologies such as sphere, rod, flower, star, core/shell, hollow, octahedra, core/satellites, and chainlike aggregates, and quantitatively compared their SERS performance for pH sensing. The SERS intensity from the most commonly utilized SERS probe molecule ( para-mercaptobenzoic acid, p-MBA) for pH sensing was measured at the single nanoparticle level under the same measurement parameters such as low laser power (0.5 mW/µm2), short integration time (100 ms) at wavelengths of 405, 488, 532, 584, 676, and 785 nm. In our measurement, the Ag chain, Ag core/satellites, Ag@Au core/satellites, and Au core/satellites nanoassemblies showed efficient pH sensing at the single particle level. By using p-MBA-conjugated Au@Ag core/satellites, we performed time-lapse pH measurements during apoptosis of HeLa cells. These experimental results confirmed that the pH measurement using p-MBA-conjugated Au@Ag core/satellites can be applied for long-term measurements of intracellular pH during cellular events.

Raman scattering measurements of monolayer WS2 are reported as a function of the laser excitation energies from the near-infrared (1.58 eV) to the deep-ultraviolet (4.82 eV). In particular, we observed several strong Raman peaks in the range of 700∼850 cm-1 with the deep-ultraviolet laser lights (4.66 eV and 4.82 eV). Using the first-principles calculations, these peaks and other weak peaks were appropriately assigned by the double resonance Raman scattering spectra of phonons around the M and K points in the hexagonal Brillouin zone. The relative intensity of the first-order [Formula: see text] to A1g peak changes dramatically with the 1.58 eV and 2.33 eV laser excitations, while the comparable relative intensity was observed for other laser energies. The disappearance of the [Formula: see text] peak with the 1.58 eV laser light comes from the fact that valley polarization of the laser light surpasses the [Formula: see text] mode since the [Formula: see text] mode is the helicity-exchange Raman mode. On the other hand, the disappearance of the A1g peak with the 2.33 eV laser light might be due to the strain effect on the electron-phonon matrix element.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their assembled nanostructures such as core/satellite nanoassemblies are quite attractive in plasmonic-based applications. However, one biggest drawback of the AgNPs is the poor chemical stability which also greatly limits their applications. We report fine Au coating on synthesized quasi-spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNSs) with few atomic layers to several nanometers by stoichiometric method. The fine Au coating layer was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping and aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The optimized minimal thickness of Au coating layer on different sized AgNSs (22 nm Ag@0.9 nm Au, 44 nm Ag@1.8 nm Au, 75 nm Ag@2.9 nm Au, and 103 nm Ag@0.9 nm Au) was determined by extreme chemical stability tests using H2O2, NaSH, and H2S gas. The thin Au coating layer on AgNSs did not affect their plasmonic-based applications. The core/satellite assemblies based on Ag@Au NPs showed the comparable SERS intensity and uniformity three times higher than that of noncoated Ag core/satellites. The Ag@Au core/satellites also showed high stability in intracellular SERS imaging for at least two days, while the SERS of the noncoated Ag core/satellites decayed significantly. These spherical Ag@Au NPs can be widely used and have great advantages in plasmon-based applications, intracellular SERS probes, and other biological and analytical studies.
