RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction poses a significant challenge for patients with cardiac conditions. Concerning the prevalence of sexual disorders in cardiovascular patients, several seminal studies conducted in various regions of the world have provided diverse facts and figures pertaining to sexual dysfunction among cardiovascular patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze, summarize, and integrate the findings of seminal studies on the effect of underlying factors and estimate the global rate of sexual disorders in cardiovascular patients. METHODS: The present systematic review and meta-analysis included studies conducted in 2003-2023. To find the relevant published academic papers, SID, MagIran, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Google Scholar databases were searched for keywords using MeSH/Emtree until January 14, 2023. The GRADEpro software was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. The heterogeneity of studies was checked using the I2 index. RESULTS: An initial number of 2122 studies were found in the first search. Following a precise screening process based on predefined inclusion criteria, a total of 17 studies were deemed suitable for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The global prevalence of sexual disorders in cardiovascular patients was estimated at 62.6% (95% CI: 49.8-73.8%). As the results of the meta-regression showed that as the sample size increased, there was a significant decrease in the overall prevalence of sexual disorders among cardiovascular patients. Additionally, as the study years progressed, both age and JBI score exhibited an upward trend. CONCLUSION: The present findings showed a high prevalence of sexual disorders among cardiovascular patients. Therefore, it is recommended that experts and health policymakers enhance their focus on effectively preventing and controlling these disorders. Besides the evidence achieved very low certainty, it is important for the treatment team to prioritize the sexual relations of cardiovascular patients and focus on improving their sexual function. This should be seen as an essential aspect of their overall recovery process.

RESUMO

So far, several preliminary studies have been conducted on the effect of religious-spiritual education and care on the quality of life of women in different parts of Iran. Therefore, the current study aims to explore the effect of religious-spiritual education and care on the quality of life of Iranian women through systematic review and meta-analysis. Databases searched for studies related to the research objective include SID, MagIran, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, WoS, and Google Scholar. The search was performed using keywords linked to and validated with MeSH/Emtree with no time limit until April 2022. The I2 index was used to calculate the heterogeneity of the studies and the random effects model was used to combine the data and perform the meta-analysis. Finally, 14 articles with a sample size of 295 intervention group and 288 control group were included in the meta-analysis. The mean score of the quality of life after the intervention showed a significant increase of 1.87 ± 0.29 (95% confidence interval) per unit (P < 0.001). Meta-regression results showed that with the increasing year of study and age, the standardized mean difference decreased and with increasing the number of intervention sessions, this difference increased (P < 0.05). The results of this study show that religious-spiritual education and care significantly increase the quality of life of Iranian women. Therefore, it seems that the use of religious-spiritual education and care can be part of the program to increase the quality of life of women.

RESUMO

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a disorder in which the patient has a history of multiple motor and vocal tics. Depression and anxiety are common in these patients. The results of the studies show different prevalence of these disorders in patients with TS. So, the objective of the present study was to liken the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with TS by systematic review and meta-analysis. The present study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines during 1997-2022. The articles were obtained from Scopus, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar databases. I2 was used to investigate heterogeneity between studies. Data were analyzed by comprehensive meta-analysis software (Version 2). Finally, 12 articles with a sample size of n = 3812 were included in the study. As a result of combining the results of the studies, the total estimate of the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with TS was 36.4% (95% confidence interval: 21.1-54.9%) and 53.5% (95% confidence interval: 39.9-66.6%), respectively. The results of meta-regression showed that by increasing mean age (9-31.5 years), the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with TS increased significantly (P<0.001). The results of the present study showed that the prevalence of depression and anxiety was high in patients with TS. Therefore, it is suggested that health officials and policy makers design measures to prevent and control these disorders.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The concept of self-efficacy is a determining factor in many behaviours related to health promotion and health education. Several pilot studies have been conducted in different parts of the world on different populations regarding the impact of training based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on self-efficacy, yielding conflicting results. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted with the aim of evaluating and summarizing the results of studies on the impact of training based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on self-efficacy. DATA SOURCE: MagIran, SID, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google Scholar. STUDY INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA: Original scientific research articles; Interventional studies; Studies investigating the effects of education based on the Pender Health Promotion Model on self-efficacy; Studies irrelevant to the objective; Cross-sectional studies; case reports; and papers presented in conferences; letters to the editor; systematic and meta-analysis studies. DATA EXTRACTION: Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the quality of the 18 included studies using a pre-prepared checklist for the systematic review and meta-analysis process. DATA SYNTHESIS: We conducted meta-analyses and reported the characteristics, outcomes, and risk of bias of studies. METHODS: The present study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines until December 2022. The quality assessment of the included articles for meta-analysis was performed using the JBI checklist. Heterogeneity of the studies was calculated using the I2 statistics, and Egger's regression intercept was used to assess publication bias. RESULTS: In the initial search, 13,943 studies were found, and after excluding studies irrelevant to the research objective, a total of 18 articles were included in the meta-analysis. These articles represented a sample size of 1015 individuals in the intervention group and 999 individuals in the control group. The combined results of the studies showed a significant increase in self-efficacy in the intervention group when compared to the control group (1.788 ± .267; CI: 95%, P < .001). With an increase in the year of study and the quality assessment score of the articles, the effect of the intervention decreased (P < .001). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicated that training based on the Pender Health Promotion Model significantly increased self-efficacy. Therefore, it seems that training based on this model can have positive effects on individuals' self-efficacy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aims of current meta-analysis was to combine data and statistics on the global prevalence of OSA and related factors in older adults. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: To find related studies, various databases were searched including Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), MagIran, and SID (two local databases) using appropriate keywords, MeSH and controlled vocabulary, with no time limitation up to June, 2021. Heterogeneity of studies was evaluated using I2, and Egger's regression intercept was used to detect publication bias. FINDINGS: 39 studies with a total sample size of 33,353 people were included. The pooled prevalence of OSA in older adults was 35.9% (95% confidence interval: 28.7%-43.8%; I2 = 98.81%). Considering the high heterogeneity of included studies, subgroup analysis was conducted and yielded the most prevalent in Asia continent with 37.0% (95% CI: 22.4%-54.5%; I2 = 97.32%). However, heterogeneity was remained at high level. In the majority of studies, OSA was significantly and positively related to obesity, increased BMI, age, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Results of this study showed that global prevalence of OSA in older adults is high and is significantly related to obesity, increased BMI, age, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and daytime sleepiness. These findings can be used by experts working on the diagnosis and management of OSA in the geriatric population. These findings can be used by experts on the diagnosis and treatment of OSA in the older adults. Due to high heterogeneity, findings should be interpreted with great caution.

RESUMO

Aging causes the reduction in physical and physiological strength and an increase in the odds of affliction with chronic physical and mental diseases ultimately affecting the quality of life (QoL). So far, several primary studies have been conducted on the impact of religious-spiritual education and care on the QoL of the elderly. However, to the best of our knowledge, a study that compiles and represents these findings in a published paper is lacking. Therefore, the current study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of religious-spiritual education and care on the QoL of the elderly population. To access studies related to the aim of the study, SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched. The search was done using relevant and validated keywords with MeSH/Emtree without time limitations until December 2021. The qualitative appraisal of the papers was done using the JBI checklist. To estimate the heterogeneity of studies, I2 index was used, and to combine the data and carry out a meta-analysis, Random Effects model was used. In the primary research, 1065 studies were found. The omission of the redundant cases led to a total number of 12 papers with a sample size of 317 in the intervention group and 321 in the control to be included in the meta-analysis. After the intervention, the mean score of QoL showed a significant increase by 1.42 ± 0.31 with a Confidence Interval of 95% (P<0.001). Meta-regression results showed that the increase in the year of conducting the study, and the number of intervention sessions, that the standardized mean difference had a decreasing trend, and that with the increase in the average age of the elderly, there was a rising trend (P<0.001). Therefore, it seems that the application of religious-spiritual education and care could be part of a program to improve the QoL of the elderly.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common chronic and life-threatening diseases. Due to the changes made in the normal living conditions of people after suffering from cardiovascular diseases, the appearance of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress is common among these patients. The results of the studies show the different prevalence of these disorders, so this study aimed to standardize the global prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress in Cardiac patients by a systematic review and meta-analysis approach. METHODS: The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted from 2000 to 2022. National and international databases were considered to retrieve related studies, including SID, Magiran, Scopus, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS). Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist was used to evaluate studies qualitatively. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed by I2 index, and data analysis was performed in Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. RESULTS: After reviewing the retrieved studies, finally 68 studies on the prevalence of depression with a sample size of 110,219, 36 studies on the prevalence of anxiety with a sample size of 72,374 and 5 studies on the prevalence of stress with a sample size of 533 considered for the meta-analysis. Based on the results of the Meta-Analysis, the overall estimation of the prevalence of depression was 31.3 % (95 % confidence interval: 25.4/0.38 %), anxiety prevalence; 32.9 % (95 % confidence interval: 21.9-46.6 %) and stress prevalence was 57.7 % (95 % confidence interval: 45.3-3.3 %). CONCLUSION: The result of the present study shows the high prevalence rate of depression, anxiety, and stress in cardiac patients. Therefore, it is recommended that health professionals and policymakers pay more attention to preventing and controlling these disorders.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), and Kegel exercise is considered as one of the non-surgical management methods. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the results of randomized clinical trials (RCT) about the effect of pelvic floor muscle-strengthening exercises on reducing low back pain . METHODS: The present study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guideline (2020) to January 2022. The relevant studies were searched in the MagIran, SID, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov databases and Google Scholar motor engine using related MeSH/Emtree terms, which were combined with free text word. The heterogeneity of the studies was checked using I2 statistic. RESULTS: Finally, 19 RCTs with a sample size of 456 subjects in the intervention group and 470 in the control group were included in the meta-analysis. The low back pain intensity in the intervention group decreased up to 1.261 ± 0.213 (SMD ± 95% CI) with I2 = 87.60 more than that in the control group (P <0.001). The low back pain intensity in postpartum women decreased up to 1.614 ± 0.312 (95% CI) followed by pregnant women as 1.282 ± 0.479 (SMD ± 95% CI) more than that in other populations. But due to high the heterogeneity in all sub-groups (I2 > 80%) this result should be considered with caution. Meta-regression analysis showed the effect of pelvic floor muscle-strengthening exercises increased by increasing the year of publication, quality assessment score of the article, and the number of weeks of intervention (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present meta-analysis, pelvic floor muscle-strengthening exercises significantly reduce the low back pain intensity. Therefore, these exercises can be regarded as a part of a low back pain management plan.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Moral distress is one of the most important problems that nurses face in their care of patients. Various studies have reported the frequency and severity of moral distress in nurses. However, to date, a comprehensive study that shows the results of these research across the world was not found, therefore due to the importance of this issue, its role in the health of nurses and patients, and the lack of general statistics about it worldwide, the present study was conducted to determine the frequency and severity of moral distress in nurses through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: In this review study, searching national and international databases of SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Google Scholar, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, CINHAL, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS) between 2005 and February 2020 were extracted. The random-effects model was used for analysis, and the heterogeneity of studies with the I2 index was investigated. Data were analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (Version 2). RESULTS: The frequency of moral distress in 9 articles with a sample size of 1576 persons was 1.7 ± 0.5 from (0-4), in 13 articles with a sample size of 1870 persons, 3.07 ± 0.1 from (0-5), in 6 articles with a sample size of 1316 persons, 3.2 ± 0.29 from (0-6), in 18 articles with a sample size of 1959 persons, 4.6 ± 0.518 from (1-7) and in 35 articles with a sample size of 3718 persons, 81.1 ± 4.6 from (216-30), and the severity of moral distress in 4 articles with a sample size of 1116 persons, 1.7 ± 0.37 from (0-4), in 5 articles with a sample size of 1282 persons, 2.6 ± 0.28 from (0-5), in 5 articles with a sample size of 944 persons, 3.9 ± 0.63 from (0-6) and in 8 articles with a sample size of 901 persons was 82.3 ± 5.4 (0-216). CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that the frequency and severity of moral distress in nurses are high and are a serious problem in nurses. Therefore, policymakers in this field should consider its role in the health of nurses and patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a disorder characterized by a history of multiple motor tics and the emergence of at least one vocal tic during a period of the disorder. The current investigation sought to clarify the prevalence statistics for TS using a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis covered the period between 1986 and 2022. Embase, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched to locate articles pertinent to the study topic. The I2 index was used to examine the heterogeneity of the studies, and a comprehensive meta-analysis was employed to analyze the data. RESULTS: Ultimately, 30 studies (39 outcomes) were included in the meta-analysis and systematic review. The results showed the global prevalence of TS to be 0.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.3% to 0.8%), with the highest rate of spread observed in the Americas at 0.6% (95% CI, 0.2% to 1.6 %). Analyzing the subgroups of the sample revealed that the highest prevalence was associated with the population of children and adolescents at 0.7% (95% CI, 0.4% to 1.4%) and males at 0.5% (95% CI, 0.2% to 1.0%). CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive review and meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence of TS worldwide is sufficiently high, such that attention of medical specialists and health policy makers is warranted.

RESUMO

About half of the brain tumours are primary and the rest are metastatic. The impact of each of these treatments alone or together on the prognosis of patients with astrocytoma tumours, especially low-grade astrocytoma, is unclear which may pose many challenges in the decision-making of surgeons and patients. Considering the importance of patient's outcomes with astrocytoma and lack of general statistics, this study aimed to determine the survival of patients with high-grade astrocytoma and low-grade astrocytoma after treatments. This study follows a systematic review and a meta-analysis approach. Following a systematic review and meta-analysis method, articles dated from 1982 to March 2020 were extracted from Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS) international databases. Random effects model was used for analysis, and heterogeneity of studies was investigated considering the I 2 index. Data were analysed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2). According to a meta-analysis of studies, the mean overall survival in patients with high-grade astrocytoma was 31.9 ± 2.7 months, for 2-year survival, 38.1% (95% CI: 27.5-50.1%) and for 5-year survival was 28.6% (95% CI: 24.1-33.4%). Mean overall survival in patients with low-grade astrocytoma was 64.8 ± 7.4 months, for 2-year survival was 74.3% (95% CI: 32.6-94.5%) and for 5-year survival was 74.4% (95% CI: 57.9-86%). The highest mean for survival in patients with high-grade astrocytoma and in chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments was 45.2 ± 5.2 months, and also the highest mean for survival in patients with low-grade astrocytoma in surgical treatment was 71.4 ± 8.8 months. The results of this study show that the average survival in patients with low-grade astrocytoma is high following the treatment, and in high-grade astrocytoma, there will be the highest survival rate, if the surgical treatment is combined with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This study summarizes retrospective studies up to 2020 to evaluate the prognosis and survival of patients with brain astrocytoma tumours, and the results of this meta-analysis can be of interest to surgeons and specialists in this field.

RESUMO

Background: The level of activity in women who have given birth is very low despite the great benefits of exercise on their physical and mental health. There are some contradictories between the results of several preliminary studies on the effects of exercise on post-partum fatigue reduction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of exercise on decreasing postpartum fatigue in general and, specifically, in Iran using meta-analysis. Methods: In this study, the articles printed in international and national centres of SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Cochrane, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS), were used to find the studies electronically published up to 2021. The studies' heterogeneity was examined using the I2 index, and subsequently, a random-effects model was applied. Data analysis was performed within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 2). Results: Finally, nine articles met the inclusion criteria in this systematic and meta-analysis review. The included samples were 456 patients in the intervention group and 446 in the control group. The mean score of fatigue after the intervention was 8.1 ± 1.1 lower than before intervention in the experimental group, and this difference was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that exercise reduces postpartum fatigue, which can be used for counseling and treatment by gynecologists. Reduce postpartum problems in women and increase the quality of life after childbirth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is known as a mental disorder in which a person suffers from concern and distress with the perceived defects in their appearance and subsequently can experience significant impairment in social, occupational, and interpersonal functioning. Various studies have reported different BDD prevalence rates in patients with cosmetic surgery. However, there has been no comprehensive study that has examined the results of these studies. Therefore, this study aims to determine BDD prevalence in individuals requesting cosmetic surgery in a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: In this review study, a search was conducted in national and international databases of Cochrane, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS) between 1878 and January 2020. A random-effects model was used to analyze the data, and heterogeneity of studies was examined with the I2 index. Data analysis was done using comprehensive meta-analysis (Version 2). RESULTS: BDD prevalence in individuals requesting cosmetic surgery in 48 articles with a sample size of 14,913 was 19.2% (95% CI: 15.8-23%). Regarding heterogeneity based on meta-regression, a significant difference between the sample size (p<0.001) and BDD prevalence in patients with cosmetic surgery was observed. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that BDD prevalence in individuals requesting cosmetic surgery is high. Therefore, with the provision of feedback at hospitals, appropriate interventions, such as pre-screening for body image disturbance, should be mandated.

RESUMO

Cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the endocrine glands and comprises 1% of all malignant cancers and its incidence is still increasing. No comprehensive study summarizing the results of these studies was found. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of thyroid cancer in Iran in a systematic review and meta-analysis. In this review, studies were extracted by searching the national and international databases of SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, and Google Scholar, Cochrane, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS) from 1997 to September 2019. Simple random effects model was used for data analysis and heterogeneity of studies was investigated with I 2 index. Data were analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 2) software. In 28 reviewed articles, the prevalence of thyroid cancer in Iran was reported to be 3.5% with a sample size of 100,869 (95% CI: 2.7-4.4%). Regarding heterogeneity on the basis of meta-regression, there was no significant difference between the effect of the year of study (P = 0.531) and sample size (P = 0.864) and the prevalence of thyroid cancer in Iran. The results of this study indicated that the prevalence of thyroid cancer is high in Iran. Therefore, appropriate strategies should be put in place by providing feedback to hospitals in order to improve the aforementioned situation, and troubleshoot and monitor at all levels.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) refers to any abnormality in the physiology of swallowing in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which leads to the related clinical complications, such as malnutrition, dehydration, and sever complication, such as aspiration pneumonia, suffocation, and eventually, premature death. The previous studies indicated a various range of prevalence of OD. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to standardize the global prevalence of OD in different populations. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted using Embase, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS) databases, and Google Scholar motor engine using related MeSH/Emtree and Free Text words, with no time limitation until November 2021. The heterogeneity among studies was quantified using I2 index and the random effects model was used, due to the high heterogeneity among the results of studies included in the meta-analysis. RESULTS: The systematic literature search retrieved 2092 studies. After excluding the irrelevant studies, ultimately 27 articles with a sample size of 9841 were included in the meta-analysis. After combining the studies, the overall estimate of the global prevalence rate of OD was 43.8% (95% CI 33.3-54.9%) and the highest prevalence rate was estimated in Africa with 64.2% (95% CI 53.2-73.9%). Given the subgroup analysis based on the study population, the highest prevalence of OD was related to Dementia with 72.4% (95% CI 26.7-95.0%). The results of meta-regression indicated that the prevalence of OD has an increasing trend with the enhancement of year of publication and mean age. CONCLUSION: The results of the present systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence of OD is high in different populations and its trend has been increasing in recent years. Therefore, the appropriate strategies should be applied to reduce the prevalence of OD by finding its causation and monitoring at all levels, as well as providing feedback to hospitals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lavender is considered as one of the medicinal plants to manage stress. Although many preliminary studies evaluated the effect of lavender on individuals' stress level, to the best of our knowledge, we did not find a study that summarizes the results. Therefore, the present study aimed to estimate the Pooled effect of lavender on the stress level of individuals using systematic review and meta-analysis. METHOD: A systematic literature review based on PRISMA 2020 was performed on the SID, MagIran, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS) databases, and Google Scholar motor engine using related MeSH/Emtree and Free Text words, including "Lavender*", "Lavandula*", "Stress*", "Stress Disorders, Traumatic", and "Stress, Psychological" with no time limitation until August 2021: We also searched two Iranain free local resourses including MagIran https://www.magiran.com and Scientific Information Database (SID) https://www.sid.ir. The quality assessment of studies was performed using JBI checklist. Heterogeneity among studies was quantified using I2 index and Random Effects model was used to combine the data and perform the meta-analysis. RESULTS: In the initial search, 1520 articles were found. After excluding the irrelevant studies, finally, 21 articles with a sample size of 791 in the intervention group and 804 in the control group were included in the meta-analysis. As a result of combining the studies, stress score after using lavender in the intervention group showed a significant decrease of 0.63 ± 0.13 (95% CI) more than that in the control group (P < 0.001). The results of subgroup analysis demonstrated that the highest standardized mean difference (SMD) before and after the intervention in the intervention group compared to the control group was related to L. angustifolia species with 0.73 ± 0.22, student groups with 2.27 ± 1.34, and diagnostic tool of Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) with 0.82 ± 0.42, indicating that the difference between the groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The pooled estimation of this systematic reiew and meta-analysis revealed that lavender significantly reduces individuals' stress. Therefore, it seems that the use of lavender can be considered as a part of a stress management programs, especially in student groups.

RESUMO

Till now not many studies have been conducted to classify PAH gene variants according to American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG-AMP) guidelines. The aim of this study was to collect all PAH gene variants reported among Iranian population and investigate their pathogenicity based on ACMG-AMP guidelines. Systematic collection of PAH gene variants, verification of variants, in silico analysis, and application of ACMG-AMP guidelines were the main steps in performing the present study. A total of 267 unique variants were identified; according to ACMG-AMP guidelines, 90, 40, 71, 14, and 52 variants were classified as pathogenic (P), likely pathogenic (LP), variant of uncertain significance (VUS), likely benign (LB), and benign (B), respectively. The need to pay more attention to synonymous and missense variants with low or no impact on protein function as well as intronic variants, whether they are deep or are close to intron/exon boundaries, was a highlight of this study. Due to the fact that few functional studies are performed on these variants, it is suggested that they be analyzed first using bioinformatics tools, and if positive results are obtained, then functional studies can be designed.
