OBJECTIVES: To review recent evaluations of pediatric patients with intestinal failure (IF) for intestinal transplantation (ITx), waiting list decisions, and outcomes of patients listed and not listed for ITx at our center. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 97 patients evaluated for ITx from January 2014 to December 2021 including data from referring institutions and protocol laboratory testing, body imaging, endoscopy, and liver biopsy in selected cases. Survival analysis used Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS: Patients were referred almost entirely from outside institutions, one-third because of intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD), two-thirds because of repeated infective and non-IFALD complications under minimally successful intestinal rehabilitation, and a single patient because of lost central vein access. The majority had short bowel syndrome (SBS). Waiting list placement was offered to 67 (69%) patients, 40 of whom for IFALD. The IFALD group was generally younger and more likely to have SBS, have received more parenteral nutrition, have demonstrated more evidence of chronic inflammation and have inferior kidney function compared to those offered ITx for non-IFALD complications and those not listed. ITx was performed in 53 patients. Superior postevaluation survival was independently associated with higher serum creatinine (hazard ratio [HR] 15.410, p = 014), whereas inferior postevaluation survival was associated with ITx (HR 0.515, p = 0.035) and higher serum fibrinogen (HR 0.994, p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Despite recent improvements in IF management, IFALD remains a prominent reason for ITx referral. Complications of IF inherent to ITx candidacy influence postevaluation and post-ITx survival.

Glycoprotein (GP)VI plays a key role in collagen-induced platelet aggregation. Affimers are engineered binding protein alternatives to antibodies. We screened and characterized GPVI-binding Affimers as novel tools to probe GPVI function. Among the positive clones, M17, D22 and D18 bound GPVI with the highest affinities (KD in the nM range). These Affimers inhibited GPVI-CRP-XL/collagen interactions, CRP-XL/collagen induced platelet aggregation and D22 also inhibited in vitro thrombus formation on a collagen surface under flow. D18 bound GPVI dimer but not monomer. GPVI binding was increased for D18 but not M17/D22 upon platelet activation by CRP-XL and ADP. D22 but not M17/D18 displaced nanobody2 (Nb2) binding to GPVI, indicating similar epitopes for D22 with Nb2 but not for M17/D18. Mapping of binding sites revealed that D22 binds a site that overlaps with Nb2 on the D1-domain, while M17 targets a site on the D2-domain, overlapping in part with the glenzocimab binding site, a humanized GPVI antibody Fab-fragment. D18 targets a new region on the D2-domain. We found that D18 is a stable non-covalent dimer and forms a stable complex with dimeric GPVI with 1:1 stoichiometry. Taken together, our data demonstrate that Affimers modulate GPVI-ligand interactions and bind different sites on GPVI D1/D2-domains. D18 is dimer-specific and could be used as a tool to detect GPVI dimerization or clustering in platelets. A dimeric epitope regulating ligand binding was identified on the GPVI D2-domain, which could be used for the development of novel bivalent antithrombotic agents selectively targeting GPVI dimer on platelets.

Background: In this study, we assessed the general population's fears towards various diseases and events, aiming to inform public health strategies that balance health-seeking behaviours. Methods: We surveyed adults from 30 countries across all World Health Organization (WHO) regions between July 2020 and August 2021. Participants rated their fear of 11 factors on an 11-point Likert scale. We stratified the data by age and gender and examined variations across countries and regions through multidimensional preference analysis. Results: Of the 16 512 adult participants, 62.7% (n = 10 351) were women. The most feared factor was the loss of family members, reported by 4232 participants (25.9%), followed by cancer (n = 2248, 13.7%) and stroke (n = 1416, 8.7%). The highest weighted fear scores were for loss of family members (mean (x̄) = 7.46, standard deviation (SD) = 3.04), cancer (x̄ = 7.00, SD = 3.09), and stroke (x̄ = 6.61, SD = 3.24). The least feared factors included animals/insects (x̄ = 3.72, SD = 2.96), loss of a mobile phone (x̄ = 4.27, SD = 2.98), and social isolation (x̄ = 4.83, SD = 3.13). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was the sixth most feared factor (x̄ = 6.23, SD = 2.92). Multidimensional preference analyses showed distinct fears of COVID-19 and job loss in Australia and Burundi. The other countries primarily feared loss of family members, cancer, stroke, and heart attacks; this ranking was consistent across WHO regions, economic levels, and COVID-19 severity levels. Conclusions: Fear of family loss can improve public health messaging, highlighting the need for bereavement support and the prevention of early death-causing diseases. Addressing cancer fears is crucial to encouraging the use of preventive services. Fear of non-communicable diseases remains high during health emergencies. Top fears require more resources and countries with similar concerns should collaborate internationally for effective fear management.

BACKGROUND:  The pivotal role of research in medicine is undeniable, as it is vital for the progress of healthcare methods and patients' well-being. This notwithstanding, medical and dental students in Saudi Arabia face many barriers that prevent them from participating in research activities. This research aims to reveal the impediments that are particularly relevant, with select challenges and barriers being mentioned, such as time issues, the inadequate supply of resources, and insufficient training and guidance. MATERIALS AND METHODS:  By using a cross-sectional study, the researchers have provided a questionnaire for medical students across multiple Saudi Arabian medical colleges via the online platform. The IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23 (Released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States) was used for data analysis, which leaned clearly on the descriptive statistical part, using a chi-square test to investigate the association between two categorical variables. RESULTS:  There were 469 total participants, and data analysis clearly showed that lack of statistical skills (74.2%), time constraints (73.3%), and research topic selection (71.4%) were the most major obstacles to research participation. Even though the same barriers existed, a significant percentage of students (75.5%) definitely showed interest in the research, with 89.6% of the students recognizing the importance of research in the medical field. Furthermore, it should be highlighted that the female students showed a stronger positive attitude toward research than the male students (70% vs. 58.3%). CONCLUSION:  The results highlight the necessity for the improvement of the medical education curriculum within Saudi Arabia, including the creation of a research participation system for the students. Through learning strategies emphasizing the importance of research, mentorship programs, and providing resources to the students, there will be an increase in their participation and success in the research. This will lead to an enriching medical research environment.

In order to improve results, this work investigates how the Freelance Model (FM), Fractional Derivative (FD), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) may all function together. We suggest a new method that combines the varied skills of freelancers with the precision of fractional derivatives and the adaptability of neural networks to maximize the benefits of each. This proposed strategy provides a new perspective to the computational methodologies and holds a promising impact on diverse industries. Future developments and applications can be made possible by this promising path toward enhanced performance in complex systems and data-driven areas. Twenty neurons have been selected and data has been trained and validated in the, following manner 70 %, 15 % and 15 %. The consistency of method has been shown using the correlation/regression and histograms in order to solve the model. The results presented here not only validate the efficacy of our approach but also open avenues for further exploration and advancements in the dynamic field of advanced computation.

The simultaneous assay of duloxetine hydrochloride (DLX) and avanafil (AVN) in their pure forms, synthetic mixtures, and spiked human plasma was achieved using a novel, eco-friendly, sensitive, and specific HPTLC methodology that have been established and validated. Measuring the levels of co-administered antidepressants and sexual stimulants in biological fluids is an important step for individuals with depression and sexual problems. Separation was performed successfully using pre-coated silica gel 60-F254 as a stationary phase and a mobile phase composed of methanol, acetone, and 33% ammonia (8:2:0.05, v/v/v). Compact bands were produced by the optimized mobile phase that was chosen for development (Rf values were 0.23 and 0.75 for DLX and AVN, individually) after dual-wavelength detection for DLX and AVN at 232 and 253 nm, respectively. The results of polynomial regression analysis were exceptional (r = 0.9999 for both medicines) over concentration ranges of 5-800 and 10-800ng/spot for DLX and AVN, respectively. The quantitation limits were 4.69 and 9.53 ng/spot (0.31 and 0.94 µg/mL), whereas the detection limits were 1.55 and 3.15 ng/spot (0.63 and 1.91 µg/mL), for DLX and AVN, respectively. The International Council for Harmonization (ICH) criteria served as the basis for validating the established approach. Moreover, the proposed technique was evaluated in terms of greenness using four contemporary ecological metrics: The Analytical Greenness software (AGREE), the Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), Eco-Scale, and the National Environmental Method Index (NEMI). Additionally, the Blue Applicability Grade Index (BAGI), a newly developed tool for evaluating the practicality (blueness) of procedures, was taken into consideration when evaluating the sustainability levels of the established approach.

Background This study assesses the awareness and perceptions of periodic health assessments (PHA) among patients at primary health care (PHC) and family medicine clinics. Despite PHC's importance in preventive health, previous research indicates a significant gap in the public's knowledge and routine practice of PHA, potentially affected by various demographic factors. Materials & methods A cross-sectional approach was employed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with data gathered via self-administered questionnaires from 382 participants. The survey focused on socio-demographic information, knowledge about PHA, and attitudes towards it. Statistical analysis explored the influence of demographic and clinical factors on individuals' knowledge and attitudes. Results Findings showed that 300 (78.5%) participants had engaged in routine medical examinations, displaying substantial knowledge of PHA. Nevertheless, issues like healthcare accessibility and provider availability were identified as the major barriers, affecting 125 (32.7%) and 84 (22%) participants, respectively. The overall attitude towards PHA was positive, especially among individuals with chronic conditions, emphasizing its perceived benefits in health management. Conclusion The research underscores a generally positive attitude and fair knowledge level regarding PHA among the studied population, alongside significant barriers to participation. Targeted interventions that address these barriers and capitalize on the positive attitudes may enhance PHA uptake, promoting better health outcomes. This study contributes to the understanding of public engagement with PHA, offering insights for improving health promotion and disease prevention strategies.

Background and Objective: Patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) are at substantial risk for developing erectile dysfunction (ED). The primary goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of ED and depression among T2D patients and the associated risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted for adult T2D patients who had a routine clinic visit between January-August 2023. Structured questionnaires formed with two validated questionnaires - the International Index of Erectile Function short form (IIEF-5) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) - were used to screen for ED and depression, respectively. Results: A total of 478 male patients with T2D with a mean age of 59.2 ± 10.8 years, mostly married, with long standing T2D were included. Hyperlipidemia followed by hypertension were the most reported comorbidities. Of the patients, 61.3% had reported no depression and were less likely to have ED or severe ED (p <0.001) and more likely to be physically active and to report no smoking (p <0.0001) when compared to those with depression. Fifty-two percent of the patients reported moderate and severe ED and those were older in age (p = 0.031), had longer duration of T2D diagnosis (p = 0.005), were more likely to have any comorbidities (p <0.05), were less likely to have a university degree and higher income (both p <0.001), were less likely to be on oral hypoglycemic agents (OHA) (p <0.001), had worse glycemic control parameters (p = 0.463), were more likely to have positive urine microalbuminuria (p = 0.019), and were less likely to be physically active (p = 0.048) when compared to patients with no or milder degree of ED. Conclusion: ED is highly prevalent in our study sample, with half of the patients having moderate to severe ED and being more likely to have depression. Older age, long-standing T2D, comorbidities, socioeconomic disadvantage, and sedentary lifestyle were all significantly associated with ED.

Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint diseases that may cause physical disability associated with a significant personal and socioeconomic burden. X-ray imaging is the cheapest and most common method to detect Knee (OA). Accurate classification of knee OA can help physicians manage treatment efficiently and slow knee OA progression. This study aims to classify knee OA X-ray images according to anatomical types, such as uni or bicompartmental. The study proposes a deep learning model for classifying uni or bicompartmental knee OA based on redefined residual learning with CNN. The proposed model was trained, validated, and tested on a dataset containing 733 knee X-ray images (331 normal Knee images, 205 unicompartmental, and 197 bicompartmental knee images). The results show 61.81 % and 68.33 % for accuracy and specificity, respectively. Then, the performance of the proposed model was compared with different pre-trained CNNs. The proposed model achieved better results than all pre-trained CNNs.

The appearance of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, along with the lack of newly discovered antibiotics, resulted in the return to old antimicrobial medications like Polymyxins. As a result, the suggested technique aims to develop a fast, environmentally friendly, and sensitive fluorimetric method for quantifying Polymyxin B. The investigated approach depends on generating a highly fluorescent derivative by a condensation pathway between the studied drug and ninhydrin in the presence of phenylacetaldehyde and then estimated spectrofluorimetrically. After the reaction conditions were well optimized, the fluorescent product was estimated at emission wavelength (λem) = 475.5 nm (following excitation at a wavelength (λex) = 386 nm. The developed calibration plot displayed rectilinear throughout the following range (0.2-3 µg mL- 1), and the calculated limit of detection and quantification were 0.062 µg mL- 1 and 0.187 µg mL- 1, respectively. As a consequence, the drug's ophthalmic and intravenous pharmaceutical forms were both successfully quantified with an excellent degree of recovery. Finally, the methodology's greenness was assessed utilizing Analytical Eco-Scale scores.

Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) affects patients with immunosuppression or underlying structural lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF). Additionally, Mab poses clinical challenges due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics. Herein, we investigated the synergistic effect of dual ß-lactams [sulopenem and cefuroxime (CXM)] or the combination of sulopenem and CXM with ß-lactamase inhibitors [BLIs-avibactam (AVI) or durlobactam (DUR)]. The sulopenem-CXM combination yielded low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for 54 clinical Mab isolates and ATCC19977 (MIC50 and MIC90 ≤0.25 µg/mL). Similar synergistic effects were observed in time-kill studies conducted at concentrations achievable in clinical settings. Sulopenem-CXM outperformed monotherapy, yielding ~1.5 Log10 CFU/mL reduction during 10 days. Addition of BLIs enhanced this antibacterial effect, resulting in an additional reduction of CFUs (~3 Log10 for sulopenem-CXM and AVI and ~4 Log10 for sulopenem-DUR). Exploration of the potential mechanisms of the synergy focused on their interactions with L,D-transpeptidases (Ldts; LdtMab1-LdtMab4), penicillin-binding-protein B (PBP B), and D,D-carboxypeptidase (DDC). Acyl complexes, identified via mass spectrometry analysis, demonstrated the binding of sulopenem with LdtMab2-LdtMab4, DDC, and PBP B and CXM with LdtMab2 and PBP B. Molecular docking and mass spectrometry data suggest the formation of a covalent adduct between sulopenem and LdtMab2 after the nucleophilic attack of the cysteine residue at the ß-lactam carbonyl carbon, leading to the cleavage of the ß-lactam ring and the establishment of a thioester bond linking the LdtMab2 with sulopenem. In conclusion, we demonstrated the biochemical basis of the synergy of sulopenem-CXM with or without BLIs. These findings potentially broaden the selection of oral therapeutic agents to combat Mab. IMPORTANCE: Treating infections from Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab), particularly those resistant to common antibiotics like macrolides, is notoriously difficult, akin to a never-ending struggle for healthcare providers. The rate of treatment failure is even higher than that seen with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The role of combination ß-lactams in inhibiting L,D-transpeptidation, the major peptidoglycan crosslink reaction in Mab, is an area of intense investigation, and clinicians have utilized this approach in the treatment of macrolide-resistant Mab, with reports showing clinical success. In our study, we found that cefuroxime and sulopenem, when used together, display a significant synergistic effect. If this promising result seen in lab settings, translates well into real-world clinical effectiveness, it could revolutionize current treatment methods. This combination could either replace the need for more complex intravenous medications or serve as a "step down" to an oral medication regimen. Such a shift would be much easier for patients to manage, enhancing their comfort and likelihood of sticking to the treatment plan, which could lead to better outcomes in tackling these tough infections. Our research delved into how these drugs inhibit cell wall synthesis, examined time-kill data and binding studies, and provided a scientific basis for the observed synergy in cell-based assays.

We theoretically investigate continuous variable entanglement and macroscopic quantum coherence in the hybrid L-G rotational cavity optomechanical system containing two YIG spheres. In this system, a single L-G cavity mode and both magnon modes (which are due to the collective excitation of spins in two YIG spheres) are coupled through the magnetic dipole interaction whereas the L-G cavity mode can also exchange orbital angular momentum (OAM) with the rotating mirror (RM). We study in detail the effects of various physical parameters like cavity and both magnon detunings, environment temperature, optorotational and magnon coupling strengths on the bipartite entanglement and the macroscopic quantum coherence as well. We also explore parameter regimes to achieve maximum values for both of these quantum correlations. We also observed that the parameters regime for achieving maximum bipartite entanglement is completely different from macroscopic quantum coherence. So, our present study shall provide a method to control various nonclassical quantum correlations of macroscopic objects in the hybrid L-G rotational cavity optomechanical system and have potential applications in quantum sensing, quantum meteorology, and quantum information science.

INTRODUCTION: Shisha tobacco use is gaining popularity around the world, especially among young people and college students. Shisha users are exposed to many of the same harmful substances as cigarette smokers but at much higher levels, which could have more serious adverse health impacts. The aims of this study were to: 1) determine the patterns of shisha smoking among university students in the Northern Province of Saudi Arabia; 2) identify the reasons for using shisha tobacco; and 3) ascertain whether usage of shisha smoking differs by their sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among students of seven different colleges at a public university between October and December 2022. A modified version of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey questionnaire was used to collect information specifically on shisha smoking. After adjusting for confounding variables, a logistic regression analysis was used to determine the related factors. RESULTS: A total of 418 participants were included in the study. Of the studied population, shisha smoking was seen in 73.7% (n=308). Out of 308 shisha smokers, 208 (67.5%) had their first session of shisha smoking within the past two years; 34.4% of participants had used it in the past 30 days (current users), of which 27.4% had smoked shisha from 1 to 7 days during the past 30 days. The majority of respondents (63.6%) reported having friends that smoke. The most popular flavor among respondents (24.6%) was apple. For quitting attempts, 46.4% reported a 24-hour quit attempt in the previous year. Stress (23.0%) was reported as the main reason for beginning shisha use. Shisha smoking was significantly associated with age (Ref. 18-20 years; 24-26 years, AOR=0.08; 95% CI: 0.02-0.33, p<0.001; ≥27 years, AOR=0.12; 95% CI: 0.02-0.62, p=0.01), living status (Ref. alone; with family, AOR=0.23; 95% CI: 0.11-0.47, p<0.001; with friends, AOR=0.36; 95% CI: 0.18-0.76, p<0.001), with parents having higher education level (Ref. primary school and lower; Bachelor's, AOR=0.33; 95% CI: 0.14-0.76, p<0.001; diploma, AOR=0.33; 95% CI: 0.15-0.73, p<0.001; PhD, AOR=5.15; 95% CI: 1.00-9.65, p=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Shisha use was more frequent among Saudi Arabian college students, especially those who were aged 18-20 years, living alone, and having highly educated parents.

Mirabegron (MRB) is a ß3-adrenoceptor agonist used for managing overactive bladder syndrome. A cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric method was suggested to serve the purpose of quantifying MRB in its pure state, pharmaceutical tablets, spiked human plasma and urine, and testing content uniformity. In the present study, ninhydrin and phenylacetaldehyde react with the amino group moiety of MRB in Teorell-Stenhagen buffer (pH 7.5) to generate a strongly fluorescent diaryl pyrrolone compound that emits fluorescence at a wavelength of 477 nm upon excitation at 385 nm. The obtained calibration curve showed a linear relationship with a high correlation coefficient (r = 0.9997) in the concentration range of 0.25 to 5.0 µg mL-1. Limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) were 0.082 and 0.248 µg mL-1 respectively. The procedure was verified in accordance with the ICH guidelines. The suggested approach could be utilized for the selective analysis of MRB in its pharmaceuticals, either containing a single drug or co-formulated with solifenacin succinate. The greenness of the suggested method was confirmed using different green analytical metrics.

Background Evidence-based practice (EBP) is essential for physiotherapy as an integral part of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses are the gold standard in the hierarchy of evidence. However, the extent of knowledge, attitudes, and professional use of RCTs and meta-analyses among physiotherapists in Nigeria remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to describe and explore the predictors of Nigerian physiotherapists' knowledge, attitudes, and professional behaviors toward RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Methods In this observational study, an electronic version of an adapted questionnaire assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and professional use of RCTs and meta-analyses was shared across electronic platforms of Nigerian physiotherapy professional organizations. Results We found good overall knowledge (76 {80.8%}) and attitude (83 {88.3%}) toward the use of RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses for evaluating health interventions. Exposure to meta-analysis during graduate and postgraduate training (odds ratio {OR}, 7.102; 95% CI, 1.680-30.021; p = 0.008) and the presence of a medical library at the workplace (OR, 0.264; 95% CI, 0.070-0.997; p = 0.049) were significant predictors of good knowledge of RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Self-rated (OR, 56.476; 95% CI, 1.356-2357.430; p = 0.034) and overall levels of knowledge (OR, 0.013; 95% CI, 0.000-0.371; p = 0.011) predicted the good use of RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses among respondents. Discussion To equip physiotherapy practitioners with the requisite skill in using RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, graduate and postgraduate trainings should prioritize education on the use of RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses to inform clinical decisions and practice, while capable workplaces may set up medical libraries to ease access and enhance the use of RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses.

Introduction: A comprehensive approach to assessment is essential to ensure that all students' learning competencies are measured accurately. Therefore, multiple methods of assessment have been developed to address this matter. This Study aims to assess the correlation between health sciences students' performance on theoretical and practical exams. Methods: A correlational study design was conducted. The academic performance of 352 students across theoretical/practical courses was tested. SPSS version 29.0 was used for analysis. Spearman's rho correlation (Rs), Wilcoxon, and Mann Whitney were computed at p<0.05. Results: The theoretical performance was strongly correlated with the practical performance of all programs pooled together (Rs (352) = 0.67, p<0.001). Also, there was a strong correlation between theoretical and practical performance for male students (Rs (181) = 0.72, p<0.001), while a moderate correlation for female students (Rs (171) = 0.53, p<0.001). Mann-Whitney test revealed significant mean performance difference by gender both at theoretical (U = 9284, p<0.0001) and practical (U = 11,373, p < 0.0001) levels. Conclusion: There were significant correlations between theoretical knowledge and practical skills across the selected four programs.; The mean student's performance was better in the practical skills than in the theoretical knowledge assessment, and female students surpassed male students in both practical and theoretical assessments in the four programs offered to both genders.

Purpose: Despite the existence of effective medications, pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains a significant global public health concern, The evaluation and feedback of national TB control programs are crucial, requiring diligent monitoring of TB treatment outcomes and analysis of the factors influencing these outcomes. This study aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by TB patients, which can inform better strategies for treatment and management in the future. Patients and Methods: We conducted a study in King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2023. The study was a registry-based retrospective cohort study. Patients' data were sourced from the National Tuberculosis Registry database of Saudi Arabia. Treatment outcomes were determined as either success or failure, considering clinical evaluation, changes in chest X-rays, and the results of subsequent sputum examinations during follow-up. To evaluate the data, SPSS version 28.0 was used. Results: A total of 427 PTB patients participated in the study. The results show successful treatment outcomes among 88.5% of patients. Among the patients, males exhibited a higher likelihood of treatment failure as compared to females (aOR 1.3; 95%Cl 1.2-1.5, p < 0.001). Patients with positive sputum smear (aOR 1.3; 95%Cl 1.1-1.3 p < 0.00) and the presence of cough were associated with an increased risk of treatment failure (aOR1.5; 95%Cl 1.1-1.4, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study shows that the percentage of unsuccessful treatment outcomes is high, ie, 11.5%, due to patients' deaths and loss to follow-up. Enhanced supervision and treatment monitoring for tuberculosis patients at high risk of treatment failure can lead to improved treatment success rates in Saudi Arabia.

The development of genotypes that can tolerate high levels of salt is crucial for the efficient use of salt-affected land and for enhancing crop productivity worldwide. Therefore, incorporating salinity tolerance is a critical trait that crops must possess. Salt resistance is a complex character, controlled by multiple genes both physiologically and genetically. To examine the genetic foundation of salt tolerance, we assessed 16 F1 hybrids and their eight parental lines under normal and salt stress (15 dS/m) conditions. Under salt stress conditions significant reduction was observed for plant height (PH), bolls/plant (NBP), boll weight (BW), seed cotton yield (SCY), lint% (LP), fiber length (FL), fiber strength (FS), potassium to sodium ratio (K+/Na+), potassium contents (K+), total soluble proteins (TSP), carotenoids (Car) and chlorophyll contents. Furthermore, the mean values for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium contents (Na+), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and fiber fineness (FF) were increased under salt stress. Moderate to high heritability and genetic advancement was observed for NBP, BW, LP, SCY, K+/Na+, SOD, CAT, POD, Car, TSP, FL, and FS. Mean performance and multivariate analysis of 24 cotton genotypes based on various agro-physiological and biochemical parameters suggested that the genotypes FBS-Falcon, Barani-333, JSQ-White Hold, Ghauri, along with crosses FBS-FALCON × JSQ-White Hold, FBG-222 × FBG-333, FBG-222 × Barani-222, and Barani-333 × FBG-333 achieved the maximum values for K+/Na+, K+, TSP, POD, Chlb, CAT, Car, LP, FS, FL, PH, NBP, BW, and SCY under salt stress and declared as salt resistant genotypes. The above-mentioned genotypes also showed relatively higher expression levels of Ghi-ERF-2D.6 and Ghi-ERF-7A.6 at 15 dS/m and proved the role of these ERF genes in salt tolerance in cotton. These findings suggest that these genotypes have the potential for the development of salt-tolerant cotton varieties with desirable fiber quality traits.

Plant viruses are the most abundant destructive agents that exist in every ecosystem, causing severe diseases in multiple crops worldwide. Currently, a major gap is present in computational biology determining plant viruses interaction with its host. We lay out a strategy to extract virus-host protein interactions using various protein binding and interface methods for Geminiviridae, a second largest virus family. Using this approach, transcriptional activator protein (TrAP/C2) encoded by Cotton leaf curl Kokhran virus (CLCuKoV) and Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV) showed strong binding affinity with calmodulin-like (CML) protein of Gossypium hirsutum (Gh-CML11). Higher negative value for the change in Gibbs free energy between TrAP and Gh-CML11 indicated strong binding affinity. Consensus from gene ontology database and in-silico nuclear localization signal (NLS) tools identified subcellular localization of TrAP in the nucleus associated with Gh-CML11 for virus infection. Data based on interaction prediction and docking methods present evidences that full length and truncated C2 strongly binds with Gh-CML11. This computational data was further validated with molecular results collected from yeast two-hybrid, bimolecular fluorescence complementation system and pull down assay. In this work, we also show the outcomes of full length and truncated TrAP on plant machinery. This is a first extensive report to delineate a role of CML protein from cotton with begomoviruses encoded transcription activator protein.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal myxoma is a rare benign tumor that can occur in the cornea where the exact cause remains unknown. However, it is thought to be a reactive process that can be caused by corneal infections, ectasia, ocular trauma, or surgery. PRESENTATION OF CASE: In this case report, we describe a 35-year-old-woman who presented with corneal myxoma after micro-pulse cyclophotocoagulation (MPCPC). The patient presented with decreased vision due to a large pedunculated white corneal mass after being treated with MPCPC as a non-surgical management of her pre-existing glaucoma. The corneal mass was localized to the sub-epithelial space and was excised successfully by a minimal invasive procedure without recurrence over a 1-year period. DISCUSSION: Corneal myxomas are unusual benign tumors typically seen in adults as whitish gelatinous lesion. Only a few individual cases and case series have been reported in the literature. The exact pathogenesis is yet to be known. The lesion is thought to be due to an inflammatory process. We are reporting a case of corneal myxoma that has occurred after MPCPC which is a non-surgical cyclodestructive procedure. The procedure has not been mentioned previously as a risk factor for corneal myxoma. Our case is the first corneal myxoma developing after MPCPC. CONCLUSION: We report a corneal myxoma noted in a young female after a non-surgical laser procedure. Though the lesion is rare, it should be considered in physicians' differential of a corneal mass especially in the presence of chronic ocular.
