Objectives: To evaluate the gastroprotective potential of zafirlukast against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were included in this study and randomly divided into 4 equal groups (n=8); control (normal) group, indomethacin group, Ranitidine group, and Zafirlukast group. Indomethacin was given as a single oral dose of (20 mg/kg) for the induction of ulcers. Both ranitidine (50 mg/kg) and zafirlukast (20 mg/ kg) were given orally for seven days after inducing the ulcer. All animals were sacrificed by an overdose of anesthesia at the end of the experimental period and their gastric tissues have been collected for histopathological and biological assay. Levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß ) were measured as well as a histopathological study to evaluate the effect of zafirlukast on gastric tissues. Results: Significant abnormalities were found in both the histological and biochemical parameters of the indomethacin group reflecting the changes seen with gastric ulcers. Significant improvement was found in the Zafirlukast group as reflected by the morphological improvement seen in the gastric tissues. An effect that was associated with an increase in the PGE2 levels along with reductions in IL-1ß expression and TBARS concentrations. Conclusion: As per the results of this study, zafirlukast shows promising gastroprotective properties possibly through enhancement of PGE2 levels as well as having anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity amputation (LEA) in individuals with diabetes is a serious health issue with a considerable physical and social burden. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with LEA in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional health facility-based study that recruited 315 diabetes individuals with foot ulcers from the diabetes center in Khartoum, Sudan. Direct interviewing of subjects was used to obtain data, using a standardized validated questionnaire. Chi-square and logistic regression analysis were used in data analysis. RESULTS: 69.5% of the diabetic participants were aged 50 years old or more, and 71.1% were males. Most of the subjects (48.2%) were diabetics for a duration of >10 years, while more than one third (37.5%) of them were diabetic for 5-10 years. The majority (89.5%) had type 2 DM, while only 10.5% were type 1 DM. Two hundred forty-five patients had a left lower foot ulcer; 55.1% of the patients' ulcers were present in the toes, while 21.6% were in the foot sole. The overall prevalence of lower limb amputation was 17.1%. Individuals with diabetes patients with LEA had a higher incidence of hypertension (P = 0.000), retinopathy (P = 0.000), nephropathy (P = 0.002), ulcer size >2.5 cm (P = 0.000), and neuropathy (P = 0.000) through Chi-square analysis. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis showed that amputation was significantly associated with retinopathy (P = 0.000), size of ulcer (P = 0.000), and neuropathy (P = 0.016). CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of LEA was 17.1%. The primary risks factors associated with amputation were presence of neuropathy and ulcer size >2.5 cm. Presence of retinopathy predispose diabetic individuals to amputation. Amputation is associated with disability and psychological problems; therefore, there is an urgent need for more improvement in preventative measures and primary health care system in low resource setting country like Sudan in order to decrease diabetes complications, especially patient's education about diabetes management by primary care physicians.

BACKGROUND: Depression is the most common prevalent psychiatric condition among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and especially during dialysis. This study aimed to evaluate depression symptoms in Sudanese patients with end-stage renal diseases (ESRD) who undergo hemodialysis. METHODS: This is a case finding, hospital-based study recruited 75 patients on dialysis in Khartoum, Sudan. Data were analyzed by statistical package for social science (SPSS, version 23). RESULTS: The percentage of depression symptoms that satisfies the criteria for the diagnosis of major depression disorders in patients with ESRD undergoes dialysis was 68%. The new patients who undergo dialysis for less than 1 year had more depression symptoms (66.7%) than those on dialysis for 2-3 years (21.6%) or more than 3 years with a percentage of11.8%. Chi-square test showed significant associations between depression and age, the duration of dialysis, signs of significant weight loss when no dieting, and when the clinical symptoms related to distress or social or functional impairment (P = 0.016, 0.000, 0.004, and 0.000, respectively). Logistic regression test showed that age and duration of dialysis were significantly associated with depression with (odds ratios [OR]: 0.724, 0.211). CONCLUSION: More than two-thirds of patients on dialysis have depressive symptoms. Risk factors associated with depression in Sudanese patients on dialysis were age, duration of dialysis, weight loss, and social and functional impairment. Future research is needed in order to assess the benefit of antidepressants in patients on dialysis. Family physicians should be aware of the association between depression and dialysis, in order to provide early treatment and prevent suicide.

Despite the fact that the month of Ramadan includes 29-30 days and the duration of fasting for each day can last for between 12 and 16 h, it was estimated that a large number of individuals with diabetes do fast during Ramadan. In light of recent advancement of new pharmacological agents, drugs such as vildagliptin, sitagliptin, and liraglutide were found to be safe to use during this month of fasting. These therapeutic agents can also be used in combination with metformin. The use of sulfonylureas, in most of the recent guidelines about diabetes and Ramadan, seems not to gain much support due to the risk of hypoglycemia. In this review, we also addressed the use of insulin injection, insulin pump, and education before, during, and after Ramadan. Further research is needed to determine (i) the therapeutic benefit of new antidiabetic agents and (ii) the benefit of new technologies for the treatment of diabetes.

The methodology of experimental research was carried out using the MODDE 6.0 software to study the acetamiprid photodegradation depending on the operating parameters, such as the initial concentration of acetamiprid, concentration and type of the used catalyst and the initial pH of the medium. The results showed the importance of the pollutant concentration effect on the acetamiprid degradation rate. On the other hand, the amount and type of the used catalyst have a considerable influence on the elimination kinetics of this pollutant. The degradation of acetamiprid as an environmental pesticide pollutant via UV irradiation in the presence of titanium dioxide was assessed and optimized using response surface methodology with a D-optimal design. The acetamiprid degradation ratio was found to be sensitive to the different studied factors. The maximum value of discoloration under the optimum operating conditions was determined to be 99% after 300 min of UV irradiation.

The aim of this work was to perform highly localized spectroscopic surface measurements by combining time-resolved laser spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy. The final purpose of that was to study surface sorption at the molecular level of trivalent ions in the framework of nuclear waste disposal assessment. Time-resolved laser spectroscopy presents the advantages of being selective, sensitive, and noninvasive and scanning near-field optical microscopy is a promising technique for high resolution surface speciation. Investigation of the interaction between trivalent europium and a monocrystalline alumina (1102) surface was made using different conditions of concentration and pH. We found that the distribution of sorbed europium was always homogeneous with a decay time of europium (III) equal to 350 micros+/-15 micros. On the other hand, carbonate species with a decay time of 210 micros+/-10 micros or other hydroxide species with a decay time of 180 micros+/-10 micros were detected on the surface when a higher concentration or a higher pH solution, respectively, were used. Distribution of these species was heterogeneous and their associated fluorescence signal was relatively high, evoking a precipitated form. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was also used on the same samples as a complementary technique. A binding energy of 1135.1 eV was obtained for the sorbed europium and another binding energy of 1134.4 eV was obtained for the hydroxide species, thus confirming the presence of two kinds of species on the surface.

This work investigates the efficiency of a chaotic micromixer using thermal lens spectrometry. The outlet of the mixing device was connected to a thermal lens detection head integrating the probe beam optical fibers and the sample capillary. The chaotic micromixer consisted of a Y-shaped poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchip in which ribbed herringbone microstructures were etched on the floor of the main channel. Due to the solvent composition dependence of the thermal lens response, the photothermal method was shown to be highly sensitive to nonhomogeneous mixing compared to fluorescence detection. The apparatus was applied to the determination of Fe2+ with 1,10-phenanthroline using flow injection analysis; a limit of detection of 11 microg L(-1) of iron was obtained.

Crossed-beam thermal lens spectrometry is especially designed for the detection of very small samples in capillary tubes and more generally in microfluidic devices. In this work, the effect of the size of the excitation beam with respect to the size of the sample microchannel has been investigated. Although the signal is inversely proportional to the size of the excitation waist into the sample, the use of large waists may provide greater sensitivities when short-pulse excitation lasers are used and allows easier optimization of the optical design. On the contrary, the use of small beam waists reduces the edge effects that can arise depending on the nature and thickness of the walls of the sample holder. Moreover, small beams provide better spatial resolution and have allowed the measurement of flow velocities as low as 1 mm s(-1).
