RESUMO

Background and objective Asthma is a chronic recurring respiratory disease, and its prevalence is on the rise. A drop in the quality of life (QoL), as well as sleep problems, has been reported in asthmatic patients in the literature. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between QoL and sleep quality in asthmatic patients. Methods This cross-sectional study recruited 76 diagnosed asthmatic outpatients from our university clinic. The subjects completed the self-administered 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey QoL questionnaire (SF-36) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessment. Results The study results revealed poor sleep quality in 55 (72.4%) of the subjects. The total sleep quality scores significantly and negatively correlated with the physical and mental components of QoL (moderate, p=0.00). All QoL subscales were significantly higher in patients with good sleep quality (PSQI: <5, p<0.00). Logistic regression analysis showed that good sleep quality (modified) could predict a mental component score (MCS) of more than 64. Conclusion Poor sleep quality can bring down the scores of all QoL components in asthma patients and is the best predictor of their QoL. Therefore, sleep quality and QoL indicators could be applied as part of a better approach to classification, management, and control of asthma.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of antioxidants including Vitamin E-Selenium-Folic acid (Vit E -Se- FA) on semen parameters following varicocelectomy (VCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients from 64 infertile male patients diagnosed with varicocele (VC) who un-derwent sub-inguinal VCT were included in the study. Following sub-inguinal VCT, the patients were randomized into two groups: 30 receiving Vit E-Se-FA supplementation for six months, and 30 as the control group with supplemental treatment. The post-operative semen parameters of Vit E-Se-FA receiving group were compared with control group at the end of experiment. The sperm count, percentage of motile and abnormal sperms were considered. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in terms of count (P = .031) and motility (P = .01) of sperm after six months of receiving Vit E-Se-FA supplementation comparing with control group. CONCLUSION: Vit E-Se-FA supplementation can improve sperm parameters (count and motility of sperm) after VCT.

RESUMO

Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) are a concern in the Middle East and worldwide. Simple screening methods have been sought to detect carbapenemase producers to determine appropriate therapeutic measures and implement infection control interventions. In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of agar disc diffusion, commercial combined disc test (Rosco), and carbapenem MIC determination in comparison to molecular detection of carbapenemase genes among 82 carbapenem non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae (CNSE) and 37 Acinetobacter/Pseudomonas isolates. The blaOXA-48, blaNDM, blaNDM/OXA-48, and blaIMP were detected in 68 out of 82 CNSE isolates. All of the Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were positive for the blaOXA-51 (n = 23), of those some were positive for blaOXA-48 (n = 13) and blaNDM (n = 3). Sensitivities and specificities of combined disc test for detection of blaNDM and blaOXA-48 carrying Enterobacteriaceae isolates were 92.5% and 100%, and 58.5% and 100%, respectively, while those for Acinetobacter/Pseudomonas isolates were 100%, 81.8% and 96.2%, 89%, respectively. While carbapenem MIC values had excellent concordance with phenotypic combined disc test for detection of blaOXA-48 producers (area under curve > 90%), only ertapenem MIC's could precisely detect blaOXA-48 PCR-positive Enterobacteriaceae isolates (AUC 70%, sensitivity 70%, specificity 50%). The phenotypic commercial test showed excellent sensitivity for detection of blaNDM producers, but had poor sensitivity for blaOXA-48-producing Enterobacteriaceae. Ertapenem MIC values had low sensitivity and specificity for detection of the blaOXA-48-carrying Enterobacteriaceae. This is the first report of A. baumannii isolates co-harbored the blaOXA-48/blaNDM carbapenemases from Iran.
