RESUMO

Chronic osteomyelitis with proliferative periostitis, known as Garre's osteomyelitis, is a type of osteomyelitis characterized by a distinctive gross thickening of the periosteum of bones. Peripheral reactive bone formation can be caused by mild irritation or infection. Garre's osteomyelitis is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and the mandible is more affected than the maxilla. The following is a case report of a 12-year-old female patient with Garre's osteomyelitis of the mandible due to an infection of a root canal-treated tooth. Without surgical intervention, the patient's symptoms were relieved through nonsurgical root canal re-treatment with long-term calcium hydroxide placement. A cone-beam computed tomography image obtained 6 months after treatment completion displayed complete healing of the periapical lesion and resolution of the peripheral reactive buccal bone. Due to the clinical features of Garre's osteomyelitis, which is characterized by thickening of the periosteum, it can be mistaken for other diseases such as fibrous dysplasia. It is important to correctly diagnose Garre's osteomyelitis based on its distinctive clinical features to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention, and it can lead to minimally invasive treatment options.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders are common and have high prevalence in young adults. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors of functional gastrointestinal disorders in university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted in January 2021 at two universities in a South Korean city and included 493 participants. The Rome IV criteria (for functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome) and the Korean gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire (for gastroesophageal reflux disease) were used to define each disease. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia, and irritable bowel syndrome prevalence was 18.5%, 7.5%, and 6.5%, respectively, in university students. In multivariate analysis, school year (fourth) (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 2.27 [0.25, 0.78]), underlying disease (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 2.92 [1.42, 6.04]), physical activity less than once weekly (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 4.84 [1.04, 22.45]), very irregular meals (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 4.02 [1.54, 10.49]), overeating more than 5 times weekly (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 3.37 [1.19, 9.56]), and academic stress (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] = 1.02 [1.01, 1.03]) were risk factors for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Our findings indicate that a comprehensive management program focusing on eating habits and psychological factors is needed to reduce the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders in university students.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the dental abnormalities by visually assessing the labial and buccal photographs in dogs and cats and analyze their prevalence based on age and breed. ANIMALS: 1,096 client-owned dogs and 775 client-owned cats. METHODS: Data were collected from patients who visited 26 private veterinary clinics from January to December 2022. Each animal was evaluated through dental photographs taken from the labial and buccal sides. Correlations between the prevalence of the identified dental abnormalities and age, craniofacial type, and breed, were analyzed. RESULTS: Calculus, discoloration, epulis, fractured teeth, gingival recession, gingivitis, malocclusion, missing teeth, and persistent deciduous teeth could be identified by analyzing the dental photographs in both dogs and cats. Enamel defects in dogs and tooth resorption in cats could be identified. Brachycephalic dogs had a significantly higher prevalence of malocclusion (OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.36 to 2.75) and missing teeth (OR, 3.63; 95% CI, 2.71 to 4.91) compared to nonbrachycephalic dogs. Brachycephalic cats had a significantly higher prevalence of fractured teeth (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.24 to 3.04) and a lower prevalence of gingival recession (OR, 0.30; 95% CI, 0.15 to 0.55) compared to nonbrachycephalic cats. Calculus, persistent deciduous teeth, and possibly gingivitis could be identified in dogs and cats by analyzing labial and buccal photographs. The assessment of some dental abnormalities such as fractured teeth, missing teeth, and tooth resorption can be limited without a complete dental examination under anesthesia. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although the assessment of dental conditions may be underestimated, the data on the prevalence of the dental abnormalities evaluated through the photographs could be utilized for screening dental diseases.

This split-mouth blinded randomized controlled study compared the efficacy of a desensitizing agent with oxalate/resin polymer and a universal adhesive containing mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) for dentin hypersensitivity (DH) relief, using Schiff sensitivity score (SSS) and visual analog scale (VAS). Split quadrants containing teeth with DH were treated with either MS Coat ONE or Hi-Bond Universal with MBG as the functional additive. Assessments at baseline, immediately post-application, and at 1- and 2-week follow-ups used standardized stimulus protocols (air, cold, and acid). The SSS difference was the primary outcome, while the VAS difference was the secondary outcome. A mixed linear effect model performed statistical analysis. Immediate DH reduction occurred in response to air stimuli, with a significant decrease in Group HB than in Group MS (p = 0.0178). Cold stimulus reduction exhibited a gradual cumulative effect, with consistently greater reductions in Group HB than in Group MS (p ≤ 0.0377). Both groups effectively managed acidic stimuli, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). The VAS scores decreased gradually over the follow-up period (p < 0.0001). This study highlights the differential efficacy of treatments for various DH triggers and recommends specific approaches based on different stimulus types. The universal adhesive containing MBG demonstrated DH relief potential, promising efficacy identical to or superior to that of a dedicated desensitizing agent. Further research exploring the long-term efficacy and underlying mechanisms is warranted. The universal adhesive containing MBG can be adopted as an in-office desensitizing agent for DH relief. The desensitizing efficacy of universal adhesive matches or surpasses dedicated agents for air and cold stimuli.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the usefulness of super-resolution deep learning reconstruction (SR-DLR) with cardiac option in the assessment of image quality in patients with stent-assisted coil embolization, coil embolization, and flow-diverting stent placement compared with other image reconstructions. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included fifty patients (mean age, 59 years; range, 44-81 years; 13 men) who were treated with stent-assisted coil embolization, coil embolization, and flow-diverting stent placement between January and July 2023. The images were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP), hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR), and SR-DLR. The objective image analysis included image noise in the Hounsfield unit (HU), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and full width at half maximum (FWHM). Subjectively, two radiologists evaluated the overall image quality for the visualization of the flow-diverting stent, coil, and stent. RESULTS: The image noise in HU in SR-DLR was 6.99 ± 1.49, which was significantly lower than that in images reconstructed with FBP (12.32 ± 3.01) and hybrid IR (8.63 ± 2.12) (p < 0.001). Both the mean SNR and CNR were significantly higher in SR-DLR than in FBP and hybrid IR (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). The FWHMs for the stent (p < 0.004), flow-diverting stent (p < 0.001), and coil (p < 0.001) were significantly lower in SR-DLR than in FBP and hybrid IR. The subjective visual scores were significantly higher in SR-DLR than in other image reconstructions (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: SR-DLR with cardiac option is useful for follow-up imaging in stent-assisted coil embolization and flow-diverting stent placement in terms of lower image noise, higher SNR and CNR, superior subjective image analysis, and less blooming artifact than other image reconstructions. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: SR-DLR with cardiac option allow better visualization of the peripheral and smaller cerebral arteries. SR-DLR with cardiac option can be beneficial for CT imaging of stent-assisted coil embolization and flow-diverting stent.

This study addresses membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) by exploring fungal-to-bacterial quorum quenching (QQ) strategies. While most research has been focused on bacterial-to-bacterial QQ tactics, this study identified fungal strain Vanrija sp. MS1, which is capable of degrading N-acyl-homoserine lactones (signaling molecules of Gram-negative bacteria). To determine the benefits of fungal over bacterial strains, after immobilization on fluidizing spherical beads in an MBR, MS1 significantly reduced the fouling rate by 1.8-fold compared to control MBR, decreased extracellular polymeric substance levels in the biofilm during MBR operation, and favorably changed microbial community and bacterial network, resulting in biofouling mitigation. It is noteworthy that, unlike Rhodococcus sp. BH4, MS1 enhanced QQ activity when switching from neutral to acidic conditions. These results suggest that MS1 has the potential for the effective treatment of acidic industrial wastewater sources such as semiconductor and secondary battery wastewater using MBRs.

The application of geospatial data often allows the tracing of people who are involved in activities of an illegal nature. In June 2021, we estimated the true magnitude of the spread of COVID-19 within the networks of escort-karaoke bars in Seoul, Republic of Korea, using geographic information system (GIS)-based contact tracing that was applied to our epidemiological investigation. Our joint rapid response team, composed of epidemic investigation officers and police personnel, identified 19 paper-traced cases and 158 GIS-traced cases from 5,692 confirmed cases in Seoul during the study period (June to July 2021). Our findings suggest that collaboration with law enforcement agencies and the use of overlaid satellite imagery in outbreak investigations enhances high vigilance and reduces the risk of potential breaches of human rights in the process.

Among the various anti-cancer treatments, photothermal therapy (PTT) is gaining traction as it is a non-invasive treatment. PTT is a treatment technique involving the use of a laser to raise the temperature of the target tumor until it dies. In this study, the effects of PTT under various conditions of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) occurring in the skin were numerically analyzed and optimized. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with different radii were injected into the center of the SCC. Subsequently, the diffusion behavior of the AuNPs was analyzed to calculate the distribution area of the AuNPs that changed over time. Furthermore, at each elapsed time point after injection, the temperature distribution in the tissue was calculated, as treatment was performed using varying laser intensities. The diffusion coefficient of AuNPs was calculated using the Stokes-Einstein equation, and diffusion behavior of AuNPs in biological tissues was analyzed using the convection-diffusion equation. Additionally, temperature distribution was analyzed using the Pennes bioheat equation. The effect of PTT under each condition was quantitatively analyzed using apoptotic variables. As a result, As the radius of AuNPs increased, the optimal treatment start time was derived as 2 h, 8 h, 8 h, and 12 h, respectively, and the laser intensity at that time was derived as 0.44 W, 0.46 W, 0.42 W, and 0.42 W, respectively. The study findings will provide reference for the optimization of the efficacy of PTT.

Introduction: Due to its distinct advantage of non-invasive application in treatment, photothermal therapy (PTT) is being studied by many researchers to reduce the need for surgical incisions. It is characterized by the injection of nanoparticles into biological tissue as photothermal agents (PTAs) which diffuse within the tissue. In this study, the diffusion behavior of various doses of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) injected into tumor tissues is analyzed and the effectiveness of PTT at each elapsed time after injection is confirmed by numerical analysis. Methods: The diffusion behavior of AuNPs within biological tissues is assessed using the convection-diffusion equation, while the temperature distribution is determined using the Pennes bioheat transfer equation. In addition, the effect of the diffusion behavior of AuNPs on the effectiveness of PTT is quantitatively confirmed by analyzing the temperature distribution in the medium through the apoptotic variable. Numerical simulation parameters are selected with doses ranging from 100 to 400 µg/mL, elapsed time after injection from 1 min to 24 h, and laser power ranging from 0 to 1 W. Results: After evaluating PTT's efficacy in every situation, it was discovered that a dosage of 100-300 µg/mL produced the best therapeutic result, with the highest impact occurring 12 hours after injection. In contrast, when the dosage was 400 µg/mL, the highest therapeutic effect was achieved after 18 hours post-injection. Additionally, it was discovered that the ideal laser power at each injection dose was 0.22, 0.14, 0.12, and 0.12 W, respectively. Conclusion: The conditions required to achieve the optimal treatment effect at each dosage, presented here, are expected to accelerate the commercialization of PTT.

Introduction: Minimal change disease (MCD) is most often primary but may occur secondary to other systemic diseases such as malignancy. In secondary MCD, spontaneous remission of nephrotic syndrome after the treatment of related diseases without steroid therapy is rare. Case Presentation: A 78-year-old man visited the outpatient clinic with foamy urine and generalized edema that had persisted for 2 months. The patient had nephrotic syndrome. Before a kidney biopsy, he underwent several tests to determine the secondary cause of the nephrotic syndrome. The serum CEA was slightly elevated, and colon cancer was detected in the sigmoid colon. MCD was diagnosed from a kidney biopsy. He immediately underwent surgery for colon cancer. Complete remission of the MCD was achieved within 2 weeks after surgery. Conclusion: Here, we report a rare case of a patient with secondary MCD who successfully achieved spontaneous remission after colon cancer surgery.

PURPOSE: Dental implants have been successfully implemented as a treatment for tooth loss. However, peri-implantitis, an inflammatory reaction owing to microbial deposition around the implant, can lead to implant failure. So, it is necessary to treat peri-implantitis. Therefore, this numerical study is aimed at investigating conditions for treating peri-implantitis. METHODS: Photothermal therapy, a laser treatment method, utilizes photothermal effect, in which light is converted to heat. This technique has advantage of selectively curing inflamed tissues by increasing their temperature. Accordingly, herein, photothermal effect on peri-implantitis is studied through numerical analysis with using Arrhenius damage integral and Arrhenius thermal damage ratio. RESULTS: Through numerical analysis on peri-implantitis treatment, we explored temperature changes under varied laser settings (laser power, radius, irradiation time). We obtained the temperature distribution on interface of artificial tooth root and inflammation and determined whether temperature exceeds or does not exceed 47℃ to know which laser power affects alveolar bone indirectly. We defined the Arrhenius thermal damage ratio as a variable and determined that the maximum laser power that does not exceed 47℃ at the AA' line is 1.0 W. Additionally, we found that the value of the Arrhenius thermal damage ratio is 0.26 for a laser irradiation time of 100 s and 0.50 for 500 s. CONCLUSION: The result of this numerical study indicates that the Arrhenius thermal damage ratio can be used as a standard for determining the treatment conditions to help assisted laser treatment for peri-implantitis in each numerical analysis scenario.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze trends in the timely diagnosis of malaria cases over the past 10 years in relation to the utilization of different types of healthcare facilities. METHODS: The study included 3,697 confirmed and suspected cases of malaria reported between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2022, in the national integrative disease and healthcare management system. Some cases lacking a case report or with information missing from the case report were excluded from the analysis. A generalized linear model with a Poisson distribution was constructed to estimate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals adjusted for other variables, such as distance. RESULTS: When cases involving diagnosis >5 days after symptom onset in confirmed patients (5DD) were examined according to the type of healthcare facility, the risk ratio of 5DD cases was found to be higher for tertiary hospitals than for public health facilities. Specifically, the risk ratio was higher when the diagnosis was established at a tertiary hospital, even after a participant had visited primary or secondary hospitals. In an analysis adjusted for the distance to each participant's healthcare facility, the results did not differ substantially from the results of the crude analysis. CONCLUSION: It is imperative to improve the diagnostic capabilities of public facilities and raise awareness of malaria at primary healthcare facilities for effective prevention and control.

Microplastics (MPs) vary in shape and surface characteristics in the environment. The attachment of MPs to surfaces can be studied using the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. However, this theory does not account for the shape MPs. Therefore, we investigated the attachment of spherical, pear-shaped, and peanut-shaped polystyrene MPs to quartz sand in NaCl and CaCl2 solutions using batch tests. The attachment of MPs to quartz sand was quantified using the attachment efficiency (alpha). Subsequently, alpha behaviors were interpreted using energy barriers (EBs) and interaction minima obtained from extended DLVO calculations, which were performed using an equivalent sphere model (ESM) and a newly developed equivalent Cassini model (ECM) to account for the shape of the MPs. The ESM failed to interpret the alpha behavior of the three MP shapes because it predicted high EBs and shallow minima. The alpha values for spherical MPs (0.62-1.00 in NaCl and 0.48-0.96 in CaCl2) were higher than those for pear- and peanut-shaped MPs (0.01-0.63 in NaCl and 0.02-0.46 in CaCl2, and 0.01-0.59 in NaCl and 0.02-0.40 in CaCl2, respectively). Conversely, the ECM could interpret the alpha behavior of pear- and peanut-shaped MPs either by changes in EBs or interaction minima as a function of orientation angles and electrolyte ionic strength. Therefore, the particle shape must be considered to improve the attachment analyses.

Lysine-specific histone demethylase 5A (KDM5A) is known to facilitate proliferation in cancer cells and maintain stemness to repress the astrocytic differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs). In the study presented here, we investigated the effect of a KDM5 inhibitor, CPI-455, on NSC fate control. CPI-455 induced astrocytogenesis in NSCs during differentiation. Kdm5a, but not Kdm5c, knockdown induced glial fibrillary acidic protein (Gfap) transcription. CPI-455 induced signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, increased bone morphogenetic protein 2 expression, and enhanced mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 1/5/9 phosphorylation. The treatment of CPI-455 enhanced the methylation of histone H3 lysine 4 in the Gfap promoter when compared to that of the dimethyl sulfoxide control. In addition, CPI-455 treatment significantly reduced the recruitment of KDM5A to the Gfap promoter. Our data suggest that the KDM5 inhibitor CPI-455 effectively controls NSC cell fate via KDM5A inhibition and induces astrocytogenesis.

Recent advances in technology have led to an increase in the detection of previously undetected deep-located tumor tissue. As a result, the medical field is using a variety of methods to treat deep-located tumors, and minimally invasive treatment techniques are being explored. In this study, therapeutic effect of microwave ablation (MWA) on tumor generated inside liver tissue was analyzed through numerical analysis. The distribution of electromagnetic fields in biological tissues emitted by microwave coaxial antenna (MCA) was calculated through the wave equation, and the thermal behavior of the tissue was analyzed through the Pennes bioheat equation. Among various treatment conditions constituting MWA, tumor radius and the slot length inside the MCA were changed, and the resulting treatment effect was quantitatively confirmed through three apoptotic variables. As a result, each tumor radius has optimal power condition for MWA, 2.6W, 2.4W, and 3.0W respectively. This study confirmed optimal therapeutic conditions for MWA. Three apoptotic variables were used to quantitatively identify apoptotic temperature maintenance inside tumor tissue and thermal damage to surrounding normal tissue. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a standard for treatment based on actual MWA treatment.

Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are crucial components of the arterial wall, controlling blood flow and pressure by contracting and relaxing the artery walls. VSMCs can switch from a contractile to a synthetic state, leading to increased proliferation and migratory potential. Epigenetic pathways, including DNA methylation, play a crucial role in regulating VSMC differentiation and phenotypic flexibility. DNA methylation involves attaching a methyl group to the 5' carbon of a cytosine base, which regulates gene expression by interacting with transcription factors. Understanding the key factors influencing VSMC plasticity may help to identify new target molecules for the development of innovative drugs to treat various vascular diseases. This review focuses on DNA methylation pathways in VSMCs, summarizing mechanisms involved in controlling vascular remodeling, which can significantly enhance our understanding of related mechanisms and provide promising therapeutic approaches for complex and multifactorial diseases.

Monoclinic semiconducting ß-Ga2O3 has drawn attention, particularly because its thin film could be achieved via mechanical exfoliation from bulk crystals, which is analogous to van der Waals materials' behavior. For the transistor devices with exfoliated ß-Ga2O3, the channel direction becomes [010] for in-plane electron transport, which changes to vertical [100] near the source/drain (S/D) contact. Hence, anisotropic transport behavior is certainly worth to study but rarely reported. Here we achieve the vertical [100] direction electron mobility of 4.18 cm2/(V s) from Pt/ß-Ga2O3 Schottky diodes with various thickness via radio frequency-transmission line method (RF-TLM), which is recently developed. The specific contact resistivity (ρc) could also be estimated from RF-TLM, to be 4.72 × 10-5 Ω cm2, which is quite similar to the value (5.25 × 10-5 Ω cm2) from conventional TLM proving the validity of RF-TLM. We also fabricate metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) to study anisotropic transport behavior and contact resistance (RC). RC-free [010] in-plane mobility appears as high as maximum ∼67 cm2/(V s), extracted from total resistance in MESFETs.

Plant genomes contain numerous genes encoding chitinase-like (CTL) proteins, which have a similar protein structure to chitinase belonging to the glycoside hydrolase (GH) family but lack the chitinolytic activity to cleave the ß-1,4-glycosidic bond in chitins, polymers of N-acetylglucosamine. CTL1 mutations found in rice and Arabidopsis have caused pleiotropic developmental defects, including altered cell wall composition and decreased abiotic stress tolerance, likely due to reduced cellulose content. In this study, we identified suppressor of hot2 1 (suh1) as a genetic suppressor of the ctl1 hot2-1 mutation in Arabidopsis. The mutation in SUH1 restored almost all examined ctl1 hot2-1 defects to nearly wild-type levels or at least partially. SUH1 encodes a Golgi-located type II membrane protein with glycosyltransferase (GT) activity, and its mutations lead to a reduction in cellulose content and hypersensitivity to cellulose biosynthesis inhibitors, although to a lesser extent than ctl1 hot2-1 mutation. The SUH1 promoter fused with the GUS reporter gene exhibited GUS activity in interfascicular fibers and xylem in stems; meanwhile, the ctl1 hot2-1 mutation significantly increased this activity. Our findings provide genetic and molecular evidence that the antagonistic activities of CTL1 and SUH1 play an essential role in assembling the cell wall in Arabidopsis.

(1) Background: The intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) model can provide information about both molecular diffusion and blood flow for the evaluation of skeletal muscle inflammation. MRI-based fat quantification is advantageous for assessing fat infiltration in skeletal muscle. (2) Purpose: We aimed to quantitatively measure various parameters associated with IVIM diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and fat quantification in the muscles of patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis using magnetic resonance imaging and to investigate the relationship between these parameters and electromyography (EMG) findings. (3) Material and methods: Data were retrospectively evaluated for 12 patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis who underwent thigh MRI, including IVIM-DWI and fat quantification. The IVIM-derived parameters included the pure diffusion coefficient (D), pseudodiffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f). Fat fraction values were assessed using the six-point Dixon technique. Needle EMG was performed within 9 days of the MRI. (4) Results: The f values (19.02 ± 4.87%) in muscles with pathological spontaneous activity on EMG were significantly higher than those (14.60 ± 5.31) in muscles without pathological spontaneous activity (p < 0.027). There were no significant differences in D, D*, ADC, or fat fraction between muscles with and without pathologic spontaneous activity. Significant negative correlations were observed between fat fraction and amplitude (r = -0.402, p < 0.015) and between fat fraction and duration (r = -0.360, p < 0.031). (5) Conclusion: The current study demonstrates that IVIM-DWI and fat quantification using 3.0 T MRI may aid in predicting EMG findings in patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis and promote the pathophysiological study of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.
