RESUMO

A self-immolative radiocontrast polymer agent has been newly designed for this study. The polymer agent is composed of a degradable poly(benzyl ether)-based backbone that enables complete and spontaneous depolymerization upon exposure to a specific stimulus, with iodophenyl pendant groups that confer a radiodensity comparable to that of commercial agents. In particular, when incorporated into a biodegradable polycaprolactone matrix, the agent not only reinforces the matrix and provides prolonged radiopacity without leaching but also governs the overall degradation kinetics of the composite under basic aqueous conditions, allowing for X-ray tracking and exhibiting a predictable degradation until the end of its lifespan. Our design would be advanced with various other components to produce synergistic functions and extended for applications in implantable biodegradable devices and theragnostic systems.

RESUMO

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a prevalent disease characterized by a painful rash. A multicountry study was conducted to elicit public and physician knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) toward HZ disease and vaccination for the assessment of local factors influencing HZ vaccine perceptions in four Asian-Pacific countries/territories One-to-one qualitative interviews were conducted in 2022, among the public (people aged ≥ 50 years, adults with parents aged ≥ 50 years, zoster vaccine live-vaccinated individuals aged ≥ 50 years in Republic of Korea, and HZ patients; n = 78) and physicians (general practitioners and specialists; n = 24). Themes surrounding KAP toward HZ and HZ vaccination were summarized using a thematic analysis. A substantial knowledge gap related to HZ was observed among the public, including its causes, long-term impacts, and the at-risk population. There was a low perceived risk of HZ and low general awareness of HZ vaccine availability, although country/territory-specific differences existed. Fear of HZ-associated pain contributed toward vaccination intent among HZ patients and adults with parents aged ≥ 50 years. HZ-naïve adults who were encouraged to receive the vaccine by others were not motivated to do so due to optimism bias. Physicians were perceived to be a reliable source of information. However, physicians did not always proactively discuss HZ vaccination due to time constraints and a perceived need to prioritize other vaccinations including influenza and pneumococcal vaccines. Initiatives are needed to improve public awareness of HZ and its complications, in terms of overall impact on individuals and society, and highlight the important role of physicians in recommending vaccination.

RESUMO

Healthcare workers (HCWs) at community hospitals, also known as frontline hospitals (FLHs), may encounter patients with possible infectious diseases, including those caused by high-consequence pathogens such as Zaire ebolavirus. We created and piloted a 1-day, in-person, didactic and skills training program to determine the feasibility and acceptability of implementing an educational program to enhance the knowledge and skills needed to respond when a patient with a potential high-consequence pathogen presents to an FLH. The Maryland Department of Health queried all 104 state FLHs to identify their interest in participating in the pilot training program. HCWs from 12 (75%) of the 16 interested FLHs participated in the program before it was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to pathogen-specific training based on the Identify, Isolate, and Inform framework, we provided skills training in the proper use of personal protective equipment, spill cleanup, and removal of an incapacitated HCW from an isolation area. We conducted a paired pretraining and posttraining knowledge assessment and measured a significant learning gain among 135 participants (2-tailed t test, P<.05). Over 95% of the participants reported that the training was relevant to their daily work and the clinical simulations and reference material were useful and appropriate for their learning level. Findings from this pilot program demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of a 1-day combined didactic and skills training program focused on high-consequence pathogens. We plan to reengage the original FLHs and add regional FLHs in an updated training effort based on our findings.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To estimate herpes zoster (HZ) incidence rate (IR) and economic burden in individuals with immunocompromised conditions and autoimmune diseases (IC/AID) in the Republic of Korea (ROK). METHODS: The nationwide Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database was used to identify HZ cases from 2016 to 2020 in ROK. HZ and non-HZ IC/AID cases were matched 1:3 using age, sex, institution, Charlson comorbidity index, IC/AID, and index date. Annual HZ IRs/1000 persons and 1-year HZ-associated all-cause direct medical costs for IC/AID cases were calculated. RESULTS: Among 65,976 individuals with IC/AID (mean age 57.14 years [standard deviation 14.1]; 64.94% female), annual HZ IR (95% confidence interval) fluctuated from 2016 to 2020, averaging 23.41/1000 persons (22.21-24.62) and was higher in women (26.85 [25.40-28.31]) than men (18.96 [18.03-19.89]). IRs were highest in individuals aged ≥ 50 years, and in those with transplants (including solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplants; 37.12 [35.45-38.79]) and hemato-oncology conditions (35.5 [31.6-39.3]). Mean 12-month all-cause direct medical costs were higher in individuals with IC/AID and HZ (4,759,671 Korean Republic won [KRW]; approximately 4046 United States dollar [USD; according to the 2020 conversion rate from UNCTAD; 1 KRW = 0.00085 USD]) than those without HZ (3,786,658 KRW; 3219 USD). CONCLUSION: Individuals with IC/AID have a substantial disease and economic burden from HZ in ROK, highlighting the need for appropriate HZ prevention measures in the IC/AID population.

RESUMO

Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) SCHLEID. has been used to treat epidemic fever, dysuria, and various skin ailments, such as measles eruptions, eczema, and pruritus, in China, Japan, and Korea. In this study, the active compounds in S. polyrhiza and their target genes were identified by network-based analysis. Moreover, the study evaluated the effects of a 70% ethanolic extract of S. polyrhiza (EESP) on skin lesions, histopathological changes, inflammatory cytokines, and chemokines in mice with contact dermatitis (CD) induced by 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNFB), and examined the inhibitory effects of EESP on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways. In our results, 14 active compounds and 29 CD-related target genes were identified. Among them, tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were identified as hub genes, and luteolin and apigenin showed a strong binding affinity with TNF (<-8 kcal/mol) and IL-6 (<-6 kcal/mol). Our in vivo studies showed that topical EESP ameliorated DNFB-induced skin lesions and histopathological abnormalities, and reduced the levels of TNF-α, interferon (IFN)-É£, IL-6, and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 in inflamed tissues. In conclusion, our findings suggest the potential for dermatological applications of S. polyrhiza and suggest that its anti-dermatitis action is related to the inhibition of TNF and IL-6 by luteolin and luteolin glycosides.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: The fruit of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. is widely used medicinally to treat coughs, asthma, exhaustion, eczema, and pruritus in Northeast Asian countries, including Korea, China, and Japan. This study was designed to investigate the effects of S. chinensis on dermatitis in mice with calcipotriol (MC-903)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD), and its effects on skin barrier dysfunction was also investigated. Materials and Methods: The inhibitory effects of an ethanolic extract of S. chinensis (EESC) on skin lesions, water content, water-holding capacity (WHC), histopathological abnormalities, and inflammatory cytokine and chemokine levels were evaluated in mice with AD induced by MC903. Results: Topical EESC ameliorated skin lesions, reduced skin water content, and increased MC903-induced WHC. EESC also prevented MC-903-induced histopathological abnormalities such as epidermal disruption, hyperkeratosis, spongiotic changes, and immune cell infiltration in inflamed tissue. Moreover, topical EESC reduced MC-903-induced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). Furthermore, unlike dexamethasone, EESC did not reduce the spleen/body weight ratio. Conclusions: These results suggest that S. chinensis can be used as an alternative to external corticosteroids and that its anti-inflammatory and skin barrier dysfunction-restoring effects are related to the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and TSLP.

RESUMO

Polymer membranes represent an attractive platform for energy-efficient gas separation, but they are known to suffer from plasticization during continuous gas-separation processes. This phenomenon is caused by the spontaneous relaxation of individual polymer chains arising from the swelling effect induced by high-pressure highly soluble gases such as CO2, and it weakens the stability of the membrane, leading to a significant loss of selectivity during the separation of mixed gases. Thus, minimizing the disadvantages of polymer membranes is essential to ensure reliable gas-separation performance for practical applications. This feature article summarizes the theory underlying the plasticization of polymer membranes and introduces covalent and non-covalent approaches to suppress plasticization behaviour on a molecular level.

RESUMO

A retrospective cohort study was conducted to examine trends in the incidence and burden of pertussis among adults ≥50 years in South Korea, with/without pre-existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. The nationwide Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database was used to identify patients ≥50 years diagnosed with pertussis (2009-2018). Mean annual incidence of pertussis per 100 000 persons and overall mean incidence rate ratios (IRR) were calculated for patients with pre-existing COPD or asthma versus those with neither. Incremental healthcare costs (all-cause and pertussis-related) and healthcare utilisation (number of outpatient visits, emergency room visits, and number and length of hospitalisations) up to 12 months after, compared to 3 months before pertussis diagnosis, were also measured for each group (matched on sex, age, and Charlson Comorbidity Index). Of 1011 pertussis cases, 175 had asthma, 96 had COPD (not mutually exclusive), and 796 had neither. Overall mean pertussis incidence was 2.5, 3.4, and 0.5 for adults with pre-existing COPD, asthma, and those with neither. IRR (95% confidence interval) of pertussis for adults with pre-existing COPD and asthma was 4.9 (4.0-|6.1) and 6.7 (5.7-7.9). Both COPD-pertussis and asthma-pertussis groups had higher mean incremental all-cause costs and length of hospitalisations than the general-pertussis group 3 months following pertussis diagnosis. In conclusion, individuals ≥50 years in South Korea with pre-existing COPD or asthma were at an increased risk of being diagnosed with pertussis and had higher healthcare resource utilisation than those without these conditions.

RESUMO

Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance bark has been used to treat patients with inflammatory or purulent skin diseases in China, Japan, and Korea. This study was undertaken to determine the mechanism responsible for the effects of F. rhynchophylla and whether it has a therapeutic effect in mice with contact dermatitis (CD). In this study, the active compounds in F. rhynchophylla, their targets, and target gene information for inflammatory dermatosis were investigated using network-based pharmacological analysis. Docking analysis was conducted using AutoDock Vina. In addition, the therapeutic effect of an ethanolic extract of F. rhynchophylla (EEFR) on skin lesions and its inhibitory effects on histopathological abnormalities, inflammatory cytokines, and chemokines were evaluated. Finally, its inhibitory effects on the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathways were observed in RAW 264.7 cells. In our results, seven active compounds were identified in F. rhynchophylla, and six were associated with seven genes associated with inflammatory dermatosis and exhibited a strong binding affinity (<-6 kcal/mol) to prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 (PTGS2). In a murine 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNFB) model, topical EEFR ameliorated the surface symptoms of CD and histopathological abnormalities. EEFR also reduced the levels of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-6, and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 in inflamed tissues and inhibited PTGS2, the nuclear translocation of NF-κB (p65), and the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) in RAW 264.7 cells. In conclusion, the bark of F. rhynchophylla has potential use as a therapeutic or cosmetic agent, and the mechanism responsible for its effects involves the suppression of inflammatory mediators, nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B-cells inhibitor (IκB)-α degradation, the nuclear translocation of NF-κB, and JNK phosphorylation.

RESUMO

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with the risk of developing certain cancers, including cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus, rectum, and oropharynx. In 2016, the bivalent HPV-16/18 vaccine was included in the Korea National Immunization Program. This vaccine protects against HPV types 16 and 18 and other oncogenic HPV types predominant in cervical and anal cancers. This post-marketing surveillance (PMS) study assessed the safety of the HPV-16/18 vaccine in Korea. The study was conducted in males and females aged between 9 and 25 years, from 2017 to 2021. Safety was measured in terms of frequency and intensity of adverse events (AEs), adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and serious adverse events (SAEs) after each vaccine dose. The safety analysis included all participants who were vaccinated as per prescribing information and who completed a 30-day follow-up after at least one dose. Data were collected using individual case report forms. The total safety cohort included 662 participants. A total of 220 AEs were reported in 144 subjects (21.75%), and there were 158 ADRs in 111 subjects (16.77%), with the most common being injection site pain in all cases. No SAEs or serious ADRs were reported. Most AEs were reported after the first dose and were injection site reactions with mild intensity that recovered. No individuals required hospitalization or an emergency department visit. Safety results showed that the HPV-16/18 vaccine was generally well tolerated in the Korean population, and no safety concerns were identified.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03671369.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: To better understand the conditions associated with pertussis diagnosis among older adults in South Korea, a matched case-control study was conducted of individuals ≥ 50 years diagnosed with pertussis between 2009 and 2018. METHODS: Pertussis cases were identified using the nationwide Health Insurance Review and Assessment service (HIRA) database. Each case was then matched to up to 10 controls identified using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) by age, sex, and geographic region at index date. In the 12 months and 30 days prior to index date, the presence of clinical characteristics previously reported to be related to pertussis and pertussis-like conditions were assessed, respectively. A conditional multivariate logistic regression model was then used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) of pertussis diagnosis, adjusted for each of the characteristics. RESULTS: Pertussis cases (n = 1004) generally demonstrated a higher prevalence of comorbidities compared to controls (n = 9710). Pre-existing asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) within 12 months of index date were associated with a two-fold increased risk of pertussis with adjusted ORs (95% confidence interval) of 2.08 (1.68-2.58) and 2.32 (1.59-3.39), respectively. Gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD; 2.67 (2.23-3.19)], cancer [1.68 (1.23-2.31)], cardiovascular disease [1.62 (1.31-2.00)], renal disease [1.56 (1.12-2.16)], autoimmune disease [1.50 (1.25-1.79)], and hyperlipidemia [1.43 (1.16-1.77)] were also associated with pertussis diagnosis. Finally, acute respiratory events within 30 days prior to index date, such as pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), were highly associated with increased odds of pertussis diagnosis [adjusted ORs of 8.28 (5.10-13.44), 4.86 (3.84-6.14), and 2.90 (2.30-3.67), respectively]. CONCLUSIONS: This study's findings complement and expand upon previous studies on the adult pertussis population, generating real-world data to describe underlying clinical characteristics of those diagnosed with pertussis in South Korea.

RESUMO

Herein, a sequential gas-phase process involving air jet milling followed by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), is demonstrated to be an efficient strategy for the fabrication of heterolayered 2D nanohybrids (2DNHs) decorated with nanocatalysts. Tens of grams of the nanohybrids, which is a substantial quantity at the laboratory scale, are produced in the absence of solvents and water, and without the need for an extra purification procedure. Air jet milling enables the development of binary/ternary heterolayered structures consisting of graphene, WSe2 , and/or MoS2 via the gas-phase co-exfoliation of their bulk counterparts. Based on the X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy data, the heterolayers of the 2DNHs exert chemical and electronic effects on each other, while diminishing the interactions between same-component layers. Moreover, the electrochemically active surface area increases by >190% and the charge transfer resistance decreases by >35%. CVD is performed to introduce Pt and Ru nanoparticles with diameters of a few nanometers as additional electrocatalysts into the 2DNHs. The nanocatalyst-decorated 2DNHs show excellent performance for the production of hydrogen and oxygen gases in water-splitting cells. Notably, the proposed all-gas-phase processes allow for the large-scale production of functional 2DNHs with minimal negative environmental impact, which is crucial for the commercialization of nanomaterials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the anti-inflammatory potential of Ampelopsis japonica on contact dermatitis (CD). METHODS: A total of 38 Balb/c mice were divided into 5 groups by using a random number table: normal mice (n=6), CD model mice (n=8), CD mice treated with 3 or 30 mg/kg of the ethanol extract of A. japonica (EEAJ, n=8) and 7.5 mg/kg dexamethasone treated CD mice (DEX, n=8). CD was induced using topical application of 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene in mice. EEAJ and DEX were topically applied to the shaved skin of each mouse for 6 days, and the effects of EEAJ and DEX on skin lesions and color, histopathological abnormalities such as epidermal hyperplasia and immune cell infiltration, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) production were investigated. The effects on changes in body weights and spleen/body weight ratio were also investigated. RESULTS: EEAJ at 30 mg/kg significantly prevented scaling, erythema and enlargement of skin weight compared to using carbon dioxide. EEAJ also prevented epithelial hyperplasia and immune cell infiltrations induced by repeated application of DNFB (P<0.01). In addition, EEAJ significantly lowered levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and MCP-1 (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The anti-inflammatory effects of EEAJ were similar to those of DEX. CONCLUSION: A. japonica may be a new therapeutic agent with the potential to reduce or replace corticosteroids and its mechanisms are closely related to regulation of TNF-α production.

RESUMO

Stomach cancer is a global health concern as millions of cases are reported each year. In the present study, we developed a pH-responsive microrobot with good biocompatibility, magnetic-field controlled movements, and the ability to be visualized via X-ray imaging. The microrobot consisted of composite resin and a pH-responsive layer. This microrobot was found to fold itself in high pH environments and unfold itself in low pH environments. In addition, the neodymium (NdFeB) magnetic nanoparticles present inside the composite resin provided the microrobot with an ability to be controlled by a magnetic field through an electromagnetic actuation system, and the monomeric triiodobenzoate-based particles were found to act as contrast agents for real-time X-ray imaging. The doxorubicin coating on the microrobot's surface resulted in a high cancer-cell killing effect. Finally, we demonstrated the proposed microrobot under an ex vivo environment using a pig's stomach. Thus, this approach can be a potential alternative to targeted drug carriers, especially for stomach cancer applications.

RESUMO

To build devices offering users comfortable experience, it is important to focus on form factor and multifunctionality. In this study, for the first time, multifunctional Zn clusters with shape memory, self-healing, triboelectricity, and optical sensing synergized with rollable form factor are designed and fabricated by coordinating COO- and Zn2+ . As pore forming agent, Zn clusters produce hierarchical porous structure depending on Zn amount. Zn clusters are applied as message transmitters and charge containers in optical sensing and corona charge injection, respectively. Moreover, Zn clusters in PVB-COO-Zn serve as positive tribomaterial due to Zn ion doping effect, increasing the output performance as the Zn amount reaches 20 wt%. In addition, injecting positive charge into PVB-COO-Zn 20 lead to more than 24 times increase in output performance compared to those of non-porous structures. The reversibility of Zn clusters endows shape memory and self-healing, synergized with the rollable form factor. The rollability is implemented using the long alkyl chain and the energy absorption of porous structure, providing damage resistance. The advancements in this work provide opportunities for multifunctional and unique applications (shape memory rotating-triboelectric nanogenerator, rollable self-healing touchpad, hidden tag) synergized with rollability that accomplishes working in broadened condition in near future.

RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Rumex japonicus Houtt. (RJ) has been used to treat gastrointestinal and inflammatory diseases in East Asia. However, it is unknown whether RJ can prevent PD. We investigated the neuroprotective effects of RJ in cellular and animal PD models, focused on mitochondrial function and the gut-brain axis. SH-SY5Y cells were treated with RJ (0.01 mg/mL) for 24 h, after which they were treated with the 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+). MPP+-induced apoptosis increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and decreased ATP, PINK1, and DJ-1, which were inhibited by RJ. Ten-week-old C57BL/6N male mice were treated with 30 mg/kg of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) for 5 days and orally administered 50 or 100 mg/kg of RJ for 14 days. RJ alleviated MPTP-induced behavioral impairment, dopaminergic neuronal death, and mitochondrial dysfunction in the substantia nigra (SN) and suppressed the MPTP-induced increase in lipopolysaccharide, interleukin-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α, α-synuclein, and apoptotic factors in the SN and colon. Moreover, RJ inhibited the MPTP-mediated disruption of the tight junction barrier in the colon and blood-brain barrier of mice. Therefore, RJ alleviates MPTP-induced inflammation and dopaminergic neuronal death by maintaining mitochondrial function and tight junctions in the brain and colon.

RESUMO

Despite the implementation of effective paediatric vaccination programmes, pertussis remains a global health problem. Disease epidemiology has changed over time, shifting towards the adolescent and adult populations. In adults, the true burden of pertussis is greatly underestimated and pertussis vaccine coverage rates are suboptimal, including individuals with chronic conditions. Here, we report the outcomes of a virtual international scientific workshop to assess the evidence on the burden of pertussis in older adults and identify potential solutions to improve uptake of pertussis vaccines. In adults, pertussis is underdiagnosed in part due to atypical or milder clinical presentation and the lack of testing and case confirmation. However, contemporary epidemiological data denoted an increase in the burden of pertussis among adolescents and adults. This might be related to a variety of reasons including the waning of immunity over time, the lack of booster vaccination, and the improved diagnostic methods that led to increased recognition of the disease in adults. Pertussis sequelae can be severe in older adults, particularly those with existing chronic medical conditions, and the vulnerability of these groups is further enhanced by low pertussis vaccine coverage. Possible measures to increase vaccine uptake include strengthening and harmonisation of immunisation guidelines, healthcare professionals taking a more active role in recommending pertussis vaccination, involvement of vaccination centres and pharmacies in the vaccination process, and improving knowledge of pertussis burden and vaccine efficacy among the general population.

RESUMO

The formation of an interfacial layer is believed to affect the ferroelectric properties in HfO2based ferroelectric devices. The atomic layer deposited devices continue suffering from a poor bottom interfacial condition, since the formation of bottom interface is severely affected by atomic layer deposition and annealing process. Herein, the formation of bottom interfacial layer was controlled through deposition of different bottom electrodes (BE) in device structure W/HZO/BE. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses done on devices W/HZO/W and W/HZO/IrOxsuggest the strong effect of IrOxin controlling bottom interfacial layer formation while W/HZO/W badly suffers from interfacial layer formation. W/HZO/IrOxdevices show high remnant polarization (2Pr) âˆ¼ 53µC cm-2, wake-up free endurance cycling characteristics, low leakage current with demonstration of low annealing temperature requirement as low as 350 °C, valuable for back-end-of-line integration. Further, sub-5 nm HZO thicknesses-based W/HZO/IrOxdevices demonstrate high 2Prand wake-up free ferroelectric characteristics, which can be promising for low power and high-density memory applications. 2.2 nm, 3 nm, and 4 nm HZO based W/HZO/IrOxdevices show 2Prvalues 13.54, 22.4, 38.23µC cm-2at 4 MV cm-1and 19.96, 30.17, 48.34µC cm-2at 5 MV cm-1, respectively, with demonstration of wake-up free ferroelectric characteristics.

RESUMO

This paper demonstrates the hierarchical design of functional, fibrous polymer monoliths. The monoliths are composed of conjugated microporous polymers that not only are embedded with heteroatoms but also feature fibrous yet compressible structures due to the in situ self-assembly process that occurs during the polymerization process. Therefore, the doped nitrogen atoms can allow the growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanocrystals, which causes the homogeneous encapsulation of individual fibers. The resulting hybrid monoliths exhibit enhanced physical properties as well as catalytic activity, allowing the formation of an additional coating layer via a thiol-epoxy reaction. The deliberate inclusion of template molecules during the reaction forms molecularly imprinted sites on the fibers to afford functional monoliths. As a proof of concept, the hierarchically designed materials are able to show effective recognition properties toward diethylstilbestrol, an endocrine disruptor, taking advantage of the binding sites that selectively capture the analyte molecules and the fibrous morphology that increases the accessibility of these binding sites. We envisage that the incorporation of various heteroatoms or nanocrystals will bring about the bespoke design of advanced monoliths with autonomous functions, leading to smart textile systems.
