RESUMO

This research proposes a novel, three-tier AI-based scheme for the allocation of carbon-neutral mobility hubs. Initially, it identified optimal sites using a genetic algorithm, which optimized travel times and achieved a high fitness value of 77,000,000. Second, it involved an Ensemble-based suitability analysis of the pinpointed locations, using factors such as land use mix, densities of population and employment, and proximities of parking, biking, and transit. Each factor is weighted by its carbon emissions contribution, then incorporated into a suitability analysis model, generating scores that guide the final selection of the most suitable mobility hub sites. The final step employs a traffic assignment model to evaluate these sites' environmental and economic impacts. This includes measuring reductions in vehicle kilometers traveled and calculating other cost savings. Focusing on addressing sustainable development goals 11 and 9, this study leverages advanced techniques to enhance transportation planning policies. The Ensemble model demonstrated strong predictive accuracy, achieving an R-squared of 95% in training and 53% in testing. The identified hubs' sites reduced daily vehicle travel by 771,074 km, leading to annual savings of 225.5 million USD. This comprehensive approach integrates carbon-focused analyses and post-assessment evaluations, thereby offering a comprehensive framework for sustainable mobility hub planning.

Chitosan has excellent antimicrobial, adsorption, heavy metal removal, and adhesion properties, making it a good substitute for microplastic-based cleaners. Here, chitosan microbeads (chito-beads) of various sizes ranging from 32 µm to 283 µm were prepared via emulsion using a liquid on oil method and the feasibility of using them as an essential constituent in a chemical cleaning solution for a reverse-osmosis (RO) membrane-fouling-control process was assessed. Prior to the assessment the cleaning efficiency of a solution containing chito-beads, the interaction energy between chitosan and a representative organic foulant (humic acid (HA)) in a RO membrane fouling was analyzed using colloidal atomic force microscopy, and the strongest attraction between chitosan and HA was observed in an aqueous solution. When comparing the membrane cleaning efficiency of cleaning solutions with and without chito-beads, smaller chito-beads (32 µm and 70 µm) were found to have higher cleaning efficiency. Applications of chito-beads to the membrane cleaning process can enhance the cleaning efficiency through the physicochemical interaction with organic foulants. This study can widen the use of chito-beads as an additive to membrane chemical cleaning solutions to control membrane fouling in other membrane processes as well.

Recent advances in biological technologies, such as multi-way chromosome conformation capture (3C), require development of methods for analysis of multi-way interactions. Hypergraphs are mathematically tractable objects that can be utilized to precisely represent and analyze multi-way interactions. Here we present the Hypergraph Analysis Toolbox (HAT), a software package for visualization and analysis of multi-way interactions in complex systems.

In the Concealed Information Test (CIT), differential responses between crime-relevant and crime-irrelevant items are indicative of concealed knowledge of a crime, and are used to classify an individual as either "guilty" or "innocent". However, when crime-relevant items are leaked before the test, an innocent examinee can exhibit enhanced responses to the crime-relevant items, thus causing such examinee to be wrongly classified as guilty. In an attempt to solve this problem, we examined the role of retroactive memory interference (RI) in differentiating informed innocents from guilty participants, using a P300-based CIT. Participants acquired crime-related knowledge either by committing a mock crime (guilty group) or reading a paper that described a mock crime (informed innocent group). Subsequently, the participants within each condition were randomly assigned to either an RI group, where they were exposed to new crime-related details before the CIT, or a control group. We found an interaction between guilty and RI groups: in the guilty group, there was a significant difference in P300 amplitude between the probe and irrelevant items, regardless of RI manipulation, whereas in the informed innocent group, a difference in P300 amplitude between the probe and irrelevant items was significant only in the control group, but not in the RI group. This led to an improved detection rate of the informed innocents (31% for the control group vs. 77% for the RI group). These results suggest that RI manipulation could be used to reduce the false positive outcomes of informed innocents without affecting the detection rate of guilty participants.

Since the emergence of head-mounted displays (HMDs), researchers have attempted to introduce virtual and augmented reality (VR, AR) in brain-computer interface (BCI) studies. However, there is a lack of studies that incorporate both AR and VR to compare the performance in the two environments. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a BCI application that can be used in both VR and AR to allow BCI performance to be compared in the two environments. In this study, we developed an opensource-based drone control application using P300-based BCI, which can be used in both VR and AR. Twenty healthy subjects participated in the experiment with this application. They were asked to control the drone in two environments and filled out questionnaires before and after the experiment. We found no significant (p > 0.05) difference in online performance (classification accuracy and amplitude/latency of P300 component) and user experience (satisfaction about time length, program, environment, interest, difficulty, immersion, and feeling of self-control) between VR and AR. This indicates that the P300 BCI paradigm is relatively reliable and may work well in various situations.

RESUMO

We developed a one-minute, one-step SARS-CoV-2 antigen assay based on protein-induced fluorescence enhancement of a DNA aptamer. The system showed significant selectivity and sensitivity towards both nucleocapsid protein and SARS-CoV-2 virus lysate, but with marked improvements in speed and manufacturability. We hence propose this platform as a mix-and-read testing strategy for SARS-CoV-2 that can be applied to POC diagnostics in clinical settings, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: Bisphosphonate, a typical bone resorption inhibitor, is an important first-line drug for treating osteoporosis. Recent studies show a novel paradigm in stimulating bone formation. Teriparatide, which is composed of recombinant human parathyroid hormone, stimulates osteoblasts and induces bone regeneration. Bone mineral density (BMD) that was used before and after the treatment with anti-osteoporosis drug was compared for the effectiveness in therapy between a combination of teriparatide and selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), and bisphosphonate. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of 85 postmenopausal women who were concurrently diagnosed with osteoporosis and spinal compression fracture between November 2008 and January 2015. The targeted group were treated with teriparatide and SERM (TS group, n=26) and bisphosphonate (B group, n=59). RESULTS: In both groups, BMD of femur neck was not improved after the medication. In the TS group, on the other hand the BMD and T-score of lumbar spine has significantly improved. BMD ratio of lumbar spine was prominently higher than those of TS group. CONCLUSION: The combination therapy of teriparatide and SERM was very effective in treating the lumbar spine, compared to that of bisphosphonate. Although the period of teriparatide treatment has been relatively short, the preventive effects of compression fracture were considerable. Thus, combination therapy of teriparatide and SERM is highly recommended for patients who are concerned with spinal compression fracture from osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between primary care involvement in end-of-life (EOL) care and health and utilization outcomes. DESIGN: Systematic review using MEDLINE and Web of Science. SETTING: All English literature published between 1994 and August 31, 2014, that included terms related to primary care providers (PCPs), continuity of care, EOL care, and palliative care. PARTICIPANTS: Individuals receiving care from a PCP at the end of life. MEASUREMENTS: Study design, subject characteristics, study outcomes and results. RESULTS: Of 2,812 studies screened, 13 were included in this study. The studies were mostly conducted in the United States (n = 5) and Canada (n = 4) and analyzed data collected from 1989 to 2010. Almost all studies used different definitions of PCP involvement in care, but in general, individuals who received more care from PCPs were more likely to be discharged or die with supportive care (home or hospice) than those receiving less PCP care. A few studies indicated that individuals seeing a PCP were less likely to have hospital or emergency department admissions, although the evidence for this was mixed. Studies linking PCP involvement to resource use, symptom management, and survival had mixed results or showed no association. CONCLUSION: When PCPs are involved in EOL care, people are more likely to die out of the hospital. Thus, the relationship with the PCP may be particularly important in EOL care, because PCPs may help individual establish goals of care and determine treatment preferences.

Telemedicine has been shown to be effective for rural populations, but little is reported on pediatric obesity care via telemedicine in urban settings. This study aims to assess feasibility and acceptability of multidisciplinary pediatric obesity care via telemedicine within the same metropolitan area in terms of information technology, coordination, patient care, and clinical outcomes. All project notes and communications were reviewed to extract key lessons from implementation. Patient and Provider Satisfaction Questionnaires were conducted to assess overall satisfaction; baseline and follow-up information were collected from chart reviews to evaluate clinical outcomes. Based on the questionnaires, 93% of responding patients (n = 28) and 88.3% of referring providers (n = 17) felt satisfied with the appointment. Chart review indicated a trend for decreased or stabilized body mass index and blood pressure (n = 32). Implementation of telemedicine for tertiary multidisciplinary pediatric obesity care in urban settings is both feasible and acceptable to patients and health care providers.

OBJECTIVE: Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) patients are treated conservatively or surgically according to the guidelines for surgical treatment. Many patients with thin ASDH and mild neurologic deficit are managed conservatively, but sometimes aggravation of thin ASDH to chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) results in exacerbated clinical symtoms and consequently requires surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate risk factors that indicate progression of initially non-operated ASDH to CSDH. METHODS: We divided 177 patients, presenting with ASDH (managed conservatively initially) between January 2008 to December 2013, into two groups; 'CSDH progression group' (n=16) and 'non-CSDH progression group' (n=161). Patient's data including age, sex, past medical history, medication were collected and brain computed tomography was used for radiologic analysis. RESULTS: Our data demonstrated that no significant intergroup difference with respect to age, sex ratio, co-morbid conditions, medication history, ischemic heart disease, liver disease and end-stage renal disease was found. However, Hounsfield unit (hematoma density) and mixed density was higher in the 'ASDH progression group' (67.50±7.63) than in the 'non-CSDH progression group' (61.53±10.69) (p=0.031). Midline shifting and hematoma depth in the 'CSDH progression group' were significantly greater than the 'non-CSDH progression group' (p=0.067, p=0.005). CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, the risk factors that are related to progression of initially non-operated ASDH to CSDH are higher Hounsfield unit and hematoma depth. Therefore, we suggest that ASDH patients, who have bigger hematoma depth and higher Hounsfield unit, should be monitored and managed carefully during the follow-up period.
