RESUMO

Although infertility is not a life-threatening condition, it decreases the quality of life of people. This single blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 80 women who received infertility treatment in an IVF Center located in a city center in the west of Turkey between May 2020 and February 2021. It was determined that thanks to the holistic care given in line with Levine's Conservation Model (LCM), fatigue levels of the women in the experimental group decreased, their energy levels increased, their structural, personal and social integrity was conserved and thus their quality of life improved compared to the women in the control group (all p < 0.001).

RESUMO

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of yoga on pain levels in female students with primary dysmenorrhea. This study is a randomized experimental study with control group and pretest post-test practice. This study included 60 volunteer female students (30 experimental and 30 control groups). The patients in the experimental group took part in the yoga program a total of 12 sessions, once per week for 12 weeks. "Personal Information Form", "Visual Analog Skala (VAS)" and "Dysmenorrhea Monitoring Form (DMF)" were used in data collection process. To measure dysmenorrhea pain, the students were requested to mark a number between 1 and 10 on the VAS scale according to the severity of their pain on the menstruation starting date. The yoga applications were used for three menstrual cycles. The mean age of the students in the experimental group was 20.30 ± 0.46, while the mean age of the students in the control group was 20.46 ± 0.50. The difference between the pain levels of the students in the experimental group in the first, second, third and fourth measurements was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.001). It was determined that the difference between the pain levels of the students in the control group in the first, second, third and fourth measurements was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Yoga can be used as an effective intervention in reducing menstrual pain in women with primary dysmenorrhea.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nursing care based on the Levine's Conservation Model on depression caused by infertility, fatigue, perceived social support, and sleep quality levels. METHODS: This study includes randomized controlled trial that was conducted from July 2019 to April 2020, with 65 Turkish women with infertility (experimental group: 34, control group: 31). We collected data using the Visual Similarity Scale for Fatigue, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Beck's Depression Inventory, and the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale. The experimental group received nursing care based on the Levine's Conservation Model. Data were analyzed using t-tests and χ2 tests analyses. FINDINGS: As a result of the measurements made, it was found that the experimental group had a lower fatigue level than the control group, with a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.001). It was also found that the experimental group had higher energy and perceived social support scores than the control group after the practice, with a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.001). As a result of the measurements made after the practice, it was found that the experimental group had a lower depression level than the control group, with a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Nursing care based on the Levine's Conservation Model decreased fatigue and depression in women receiving infertility treatment and increased perceived social support and sleep. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: This research provides important findings about nursing care based on Levine's Conservation Model for women receiving infertility treatment. It decreased depression and fatigue and increased perceived social support and sleep quality.

RESUMO

Working in agriculture may cause serious health problems due to heavy working conditions and chemical exposure. This Husserlian phenomenological qualitative study was conducted with 22 women working in greenhouse agriculture to investigate the health and social problem(s). In the evaluation of the data, Colaizzi's seven-step content analysis method and thematic analysis were used. The Kappa analysis was performed with two independent experts to measure the reliability of comparative fit, and the value obtained in the analysis was 1.00 (perfect fit). Based on the content analysis, six themes were defined. All participants indicated that they had different reproductive health-related problems. Some participants stated that their children had respiratory system-related problems and that they were subjected to physical, verbal/emotional and sexual violence by their husbands. It is important to provide health education, counselling services and screening programmes for women who work in greenhouse agriculture and thus are in the at-risk group for poor health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is very important to protect the physical, mental and social health of healthcare workers who are at risk, are faced with a difficult pandemic process, and have been infected with the disease. In previous studies, the thoughts of healthcare professionals who gave care to coronavirus patients were investigated. The present study is the first study in which experiences and thoughts of healthcare professionals who had coronavirus disease were investigated, and unlike other studies, data were collected through one-to-one, face-to-face interviews. This study was conducted to determine the feelings, thoughts and experiences of healthcare professionals who recovered after being diagnosed with COVID-19. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This qualitative study was designed based on Husserlian's phenomenological approach. The participants were selected from healthcare professionals receiving COVID-19 treatment through the purposive sampling method. The interviews were held between September 2020 and February 2021. Colaizzi's qualitative analysis method was used. RESULTS: After the analysis of the interviews, three themes and seven sub-themes emerged. The theme "fear" has three sub-themes: "fear of the unknown", "fear of being infected again" and "fear of transmitting the disease". The theme "social isolation" has two sub-themes: "Unhappiness" and "stigma". Finally, the theme "lack of motivation" has two sub-themes: "excessive workload" and "Inadequate number of employees". CONCLUSIONS: In order to help healthcare workers manage these psychosocial problems they experience, managers should make appropriate planning and should give them psychosocial support. It is recommended that the criteria regarding healthcare professionals' starting work again after they survive the COVID-19 should be reviewed and revised. In particular, healthcare workers who survive illness but cannot fully recover should be evaluated physically and psychologically before going back to work.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a major health problem that affects both the family and the community. Women receiving infertility treatment may suffer from stress and even experience sleep disturbance. Sleep quality is an important factor of human health and well-being. Sleep disturbances tend to occur among infertile women during in vitro fertilization treatment. Many studies have focused on the stress and sleep quality associated with their treatment in infertile women. However, few studies have investigated factors linked to their sleep disturbances. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between perceived stress and sleep quality before oocyte pick-up, in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, and pregnancy test in women receiving in vitro fertilization treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective, longitudinal study was conducted between January and May 2020. One hundred fifty-seven women receiving infertility treatment were included in the study. A personal information form, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to collect data. RESULTS: The relationship between the Perceived Stress Scale scores and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores in all stages of infertility treatment was found to be positively significant at the p < .001 significance level. CONCLUSION: Perceived stress level was high in women throughout the infertility treatment. Our study suggested that sleep quality was impaired as stress increased. TRIAL REGISTRATION: 70904504/38.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effects of the skin-to-skin contact (SSC) method on postpartum depression. DESIGN AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed. FINDINGS: This review was completed with three studies meeting the research criteria. Two studies were randomized controlled studies and one study had a quasi-experimental design. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: SSC is such a low-cost intervention that it would be accessible, simple, and feasible for most mothers in the first postpartum weeks. By reducing mothers' depressive symptoms and physiological stress, SSC facilitates mothers' wellbeing and ultimately affects infants' development by enhancing the mother/infant relationship.

RESUMO

Objective: The studies especially on the postpartum effects of passive exposure to cigarette smoke are limited, although there are studies investigating early and late postpartum effects of active smoking during pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between gestational active and passive smoking and early postpartum complications. Methods: This study was conducted with 217 women in the early postpartum period (first 7 days after birth) in a research hospital, gynecology and obstetrics clinic. Data were collected using the questionnaire form prepared in accordance with the literature by the face-to-face interview method. They were evaluated in the SPSS 23.0 program, and descriptive statistics, logistic regression analysis in multivariate analyses and multiple linear regression analysis were in the analysis of data. Results: In the study, it was found that active smoking was associated with cardiac anomalies (OR = 0.18, 95% = CI 0.03-0.91; p = .039), developmental retardation (OR = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.02-0.56; p = .008), respiratory distress (OR = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.02-0.58; p = .008), low birth weight (OR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.08-0.57; p = .003) and premature labor (OR = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.16-0.59; p = .000) while passive smoking was associated with premature labor (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.25-0.89; p = .021). It was determined that passive smoking was associated with gestational hypertension (OR 0.30, 95% CI = 0.09-0.85; p = .025). Nevertheless, it was found that active smoking negatively affected the infant's birth weight (p = .000), length (p = .040), head circumference (p = .000) and breastfeeding (p = .005).Conclusion: Gestational active and passive smoking has significant negative effects on maternal and infant health in the early postpartum period.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this descriptive study is to determine the relationship between competencies and attitudes of nurses in medical errors. BACKGROUND: The level of competence of nurses directly affects the patient's safety, health status, morbidity and mortality rates, and satisfaction with nursing care. Nurses are expected to demonstrate a high level of competence in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities and thus to minimize the incidence of medical errors. METHODS: This study was carried out with nurses (n = 243) working in a university hospital in Turkey between May and July 2019. A personal information form, the Nurse Competence Scale and the Medical Errors Attitude Scale were used in the collection of data. RESULTS: A relationship was found between the competence of nurses and their attitudes in medical errors. It appeared that the work role subscale had the highest mean score (48.76 ± 6.83) according to the Nurse Competence Scale subscales. The mean scores of the diagnostic functions and ensuring quality subscales of the scale were found to be low. While the mean scores of the Medical Errors Attitude Scale of the nurses were close to each other, the highest mean score was found in the subscale of approach to medical errors (3.94 ± 0.35). CONCLUSION: The nurses had a modest level of competence and their attitudes towards medical errors were positive. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: It is necessary that the competence of nurses is increased. Increasing their competence will also increase their awareness on medical error attitudes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between communication competence and patient care behaviors of nurses. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study was designed as a descriptive relational study and conducted in Akdeniz University Hospital between March 2018 and May 2018. Data of this study were collected from clinical nurses working in Akdeniz University Hospital. The study was carried out with 262 nurses who accepted to agreed participate in the study. FINDINGS: Of all nurses, 97% were college graduates, 63% were married, and 35% had working experience between 5 and 9 years. There was a moderate positive correlation between communicative competence and care behaviors of nurses (r = 0.5, P < 0.01). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: More training can be implemented to educate nurses about communication barriers to equip them with effective communication skills and strategies. The nursing process is a scientific method of exercising and implementing of nursing care, this is only achieved through dialogue, interpersonal environment, and specific verbal and nonverbal communication skills. In service training of nurses on effective communicative techniques will inevitably have a positive impact rather than reflection on patient care.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of planned yoga practices on stress levels in infertile women. DESIGN AND METHODS: This randomized controlled study included 128 volunteer women who were registered at a private in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic and received infertility treatment. The patients in the experimental group took part in the yoga program twice a week for 6 weeks. A personal information form and The Copenhagen Multi-center Psychosocial Infertility (COMPI) Fertility Problem Stress Scale were used to collect data. FINDINGS: The differences between the mean scores of the control and experimental groups on the COMPI Fertility Problem Stress Scale at pre- and posttests were statistically significant (P < 0.05). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Because yoga practices may be effective in reducing stress in infertile women, these applications can be performed before treatment. It may reduce patients' stress and increase the success of the treatment. These findings indicate that yoga could reduce stress levels in infertile women.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for domestic violence among women seeking infertility treatment at an IVF center. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 423 infertile women who referred to the IVF Center in the southwest of Turkey between 1 January and 31 July 2016. The women were interviewed without their male partners by using the questionnaire and Infertile Women's Exposure to Violence Determination Scale. RESULTS: A total of 306 participants (72%) declared having experienced domestic violence. It was found that 30% of the women exposed to violence stated that they were subject to physical violence, 6% to sexual violence, 62% to emotional violence, and 19% to economic violence. It was determined that the total mean score obtained by the women exposed to violence from Infertile Women's Exposure to Violence Determination Scale was 120.04 ± 12.69 and when it was evaluated based on the total mean scores to be obtained from the scale, level of violence experienced by the women was found to be severe. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of exposure to violence was determined to be high in women included in the study. The most common type of domestic violence is psychological violence.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: First-degree relatives of women with breast cancer are under higher risk when compared with the general population. The aim of this study is to evaluate breast cancer screening behaviors of women who are first-degree relatives of women with breast cancer and factors affecting these behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive study included 240 patient relatives, who agreed to participate in the study through contact with first-degree relatives of 133 patients who were receiving breast cancer treatment at the Oncology and Chemotherapy unit of an university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected using the "Descriptive Characteristics Form," which consisted of socio-demographic characteristics, health history, breast cancer risk level and health beliefs as well as the "Breast Cancer Screening Behavior Evaluation Form". RESULTS: Out of the subjects, 17% reported doing breast self examination (BSE), 18% reported getting clinic breast examination (CBE) and 17% reported getting mammography. Logistic regression analysis showed that perceived susceptibility increased BSE by 0.57 times and increased mammography by 0.77 times. Physical exercise increased CBE by 0.21 times and increased mammography by 0.13 times. CONCLUSIONS: It was found that women with familial breast cancer history (FBCH) had lower participation in screening behaviors. Higher susceptibility perception and regular physical exercise are the determinant variables. Women with a higher susceptibility can be led towards the screening and their participation can be increased. In women with family history, the development of healthy lifestyle behaviors like physical exercise should be supported.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Measuring the cultural competence of nurses is becoming an increasingly important aspect to assess the quality care for individuals in multicultural populations such as Turkey. The purpose is to adapt the Nurse Cultural Competence Scale (NCCS) into the Turkish language and to determine its validity and reliability. DESIGN: A total of 235 nurses were included in the methodological study in Antalya, Turkey. The NCCS-Turkish (NCCS-T) form was used after linguistics and psychometric measurements. RESULTS: Cronbach's α value was .96, which demonstrated high reliability, and item-total correlations were between .66 and .81.Test-retest reliability correlation was .90. The content validity index was .98, and the 20 items of the NCCS-T loading on one factor varied between .70 and .83, explaining 59.02% of the variance. CONCLUSIONS: Psychometric properties of the NCCS-T were highly reliable and valid. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The scale can be used in the cross-cultural studies to compare nurses' cultural competency.
