RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress responses can lead to physical and behavioural health problems, often experienced and observed in the care of people with intellectual disabilities or people with dementia. Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a bio-signal for stress, which can be measured by wearables and thereby support stress management. However, the how, when and to what extent patients and healthcare providers can benefit is unclear. This study aims to create an overview of available wearables enabling the detection of perceived stress by using EDA. METHODS: Following the PRISMA-SCR protocol for scoping reviews, four databases were included in the search of peer-reviewed studies published between 2012 and 2022, reporting detection of EDA in relation to self-reported stress or stress-related behaviours. Type of wearable, bodily location, research population, context, stressor type and the reported relationship between EDA and perceived stress were extracted. RESULTS: Of the 74 included studies, the majority included healthy subjects in laboratory situations. Field studies and studies using machine learning (ML) to predict stress have increased in the last years. EDA is most often measured on the wrist, with offline data processing. Studies predicting perceived stress or stress-related behaviour using EDA features, reported accuracies between 42% and 100% with an average of 82.6%. Of these studies, the majority used ML. CONCLUSION: Wearable EDA sensors are promising in detecting perceived stress. Field studies with relevant populations in a health or care context are lacking. Future studies should focus on the application of EDA-measuring wearables in real-life situations to support stress management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Red blood cell concentrates (RBCC) are susceptible to bacterial contamination despite cold storage. A reliable evaluation of strategies to minimize the risk of RBCC-associated bacterial transmission requires the use of suitable reference bacteria. Already existing Transfusion-Relevant Bacteria Reference Strains (TRBRS) for platelet concentrates fail to grow in RBCC. Consequently, the ISBT TTID, Working Party, Bacterial Subgroup, conducted an international study on TRBRS for RBCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six bacterial strains (Listeria monocytogenes PEI-A-199, Serratia liquefaciens PEI-A-184, Serratia marcescens PEI-B-P-56, Pseudomonas fluorescens PEI-B-P-77, Yersinia enterocolitica PEI-A-105, Yersinia enterocolitica PEI-A-176) were distributed to 15 laboratories worldwide for enumeration, identification, and determination of growth kinetics in RBCC at days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 of storage after low-count spiking (10-25 CFU/RBCC). RESULTS: Bacterial proliferation in RBCC was obtained for most strains, except for S. marcescens, which grew only at 4 of 15 laboratories. S. liquefaciens, S. marcescens, P. fluorescens and the two Y. enterocolitica strains reached the stationary phase between days 14 and 21 of RBCC storage with a bacterial concentration of approximately 109  CFU/ml. L. monocytogenes displayed slower growth kinetics reaching 106 -107  CFU/ml after 42 days. CONCLUSION: The results illustrate the importance of conducting comprehensive studies to establish well-characterized reference strains, which can be a tool to assess strategies and methods used to ameliorate blood safety. The WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization adopted the five successful strains as official RBCC reference strains. Our study also highlights the relevance of visual inspection to interdict contaminated RBC units.

RESUMO

The relationship between molecular structure of 5-dethia-5-oxacephams and clavams and their chiroptical properties was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular modeling calculations and circular dichroism spectroscopy. It was found that the amide chromophore of the beta-lactam unit in these compounds is nonplanar with nitrogen atom having a pyramidal configuration. It was also found that the helicity of the lactam moiety in investigated oxacephams and clavams is controlled by the absolute configuration at the C-6 and C-5 carbon atom, respectively. Thus, the applicability of helicity rule correlating a positive (negative) torsional angle of the beta-lactam subunit O=C-N-C with a negative (positive) sign of the n-->pi* CE, previously applied to oxacephams, is now extended to clavams.

RESUMO

The relationship between chiroptical properties of differently substituted 5-dethia-5-oxacephams and their respective molecular structures was investigated. The amide chromophore of the beta-lactam unit in these compounds was found to be nonplanar with a shallow pyramidal configuration at the nitrogen atom. Due to the nonplanarity, the beta-lactam system becomes inherently dissymmetric, which is supported by a high magnitude of the n --> pi* CD band. It was also found that the helicity of the lactam moiety in investigated oxacephams is controlled by the absolute configuration at the C(6) carbon atom. On this basis, a helicity rule correlating a positive (negative) sign of the n right arrow pi Cotton effect with a negative (positive) O [double bond] C [bond] N [bond] C(6) torsional angle for policyclic beta-lactam derivatives possessing a nonplanar amide chromophore was formulated.
