OBJECTIVES: To co-construct a sports medicine and exercise science research and translational agenda with Team USA elite female athletes serving as the experts on their health, performance and well-being. METHODS: 40 Team USA female athletes across sports disciplines participated in an online, anonymous, modified Delphi survey by ranking topics on a Likert scale (1='strongly disagree' and 5='strongly agree') and providing qualitative justification regarding whether they believed having more information and research on each topic would support their athletic performance, health and well-being. After each Delphi round, quantitative rankings of topics and qualitative justifications were analysed, informing revisions to the list of topics for review in the subsequent round. Researchers provided athletes with a detailed report of findings and revisions following each round. RESULTS: The final list contained 14 ranked topics. The top five were menstrual cycle symptoms (4.58±0.74), recovery (4.58±0.59), birth control (4.55±0.89), mental health (4.50±0.55) and fueling and the menstrual cycle (4.43±0.74). New topics originating from athletes included recovery, menstrual cycle symptoms, fueling and the menstrual cycle, mental health and sports performance, team dynamics, and institutionalised sexism. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to co-construct a research and translational agenda with Team USA elite female athletes. The list of sports science research topics developed by focusing on elite female athletes' voices lays the foundation for future research and provides valuable insight into the specific needs of female athletes.

Introduction: Surveillance modernization efforts emphasize the potential use of electronic health record (EHR) data to inform public health surveillance and prevention. However, EHR data streams vary widely in their completeness, accuracy, and representativeness. Methods: We developed a validation process for the Multi-State EHR-Based Network for Disease Surveillance (MENDS) pilot project to identify and resolve data quality issues that could affect chronic disease prevalence estimates. We examined MENDS validation processes from December 2020 through August 2023 across 5 data-contributing organizations and outlined steps to resolve data quality issues. Results: We identified gaps in the EHR databases of data contributors and in the processes to extract, map, integrate, and analyze their EHR data. Examples of source-data problems included missing data on race and ethnicity and zip codes. Examples of data processing problems included duplicate or missing patient records, lower-than-expected volumes of data, use of multiple fields for a single data type, and implausible values. Conclusion: Validation protocols identified critical errors in both EHR source data and in the processes used to transform these data for analysis. Our experience highlights the value and importance of data validation to improve data quality and the accuracy of surveillance estimates that use EHR data. The validation process and lessons learned can be applied broadly to other EHR-based surveillance efforts.

Objectives: The Multi-State EHR-Based Network for Disease Surveillance (MENDS) is a population-based chronic disease surveillance distributed data network that uses institution-specific extraction-transformation-load (ETL) routines. MENDS-on-FHIR examined using Health Language Seven's Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (HL7® FHIR®) and US Core Implementation Guide (US Core IG) compliant resources derived from the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM) to create a standards-based ETL pipeline. Materials and Methods: The input data source was a research data warehouse containing clinical and administrative data in OMOP CDM Version 5.3 format. OMOP-to-FHIR transformations, using a unique JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)-to-JSON transformation language called Whistle, created FHIR R4 V4.0.1/US Core IG V4.0.0 conformant resources that were stored in a local FHIR server. A REST-based Bulk FHIR $export request extracted FHIR resources to populate a local MENDS database. Results: Eleven OMOP tables were used to create 10 FHIR/US Core compliant resource types. A total of 1.13 trillion resources were extracted and inserted into the MENDS repository. A very low rate of non-compliant resources was observed. Discussion: OMOP-to-FHIR transformation results passed validation with less than a 1% non-compliance rate. These standards-compliant FHIR resources provided standardized data elements required by the MENDS surveillance use case. The Bulk FHIR application programming interface (API) enabled population-level data exchange using interoperable FHIR resources. The OMOP-to-FHIR transformation pipeline creates a FHIR interface for accessing OMOP data. Conclusion: MENDS-on-FHIR successfully replaced custom ETL with standards-based interoperable FHIR resources using Bulk FHIR. The OMOP-to-FHIR transformations provide an alternative mechanism for sharing OMOP data.

CONTEXT: Electronic health records (EHRs) are an emerging chronic disease surveillance data source and facilitating this data sharing is complex. PROGRAM: Using the experience of the Multi-State EHR-Based Network for Disease Surveillance (MENDS), this article describes implementation of a governance framework that aligns technical, statutory, and organizational requirements to facilitate EHR data sharing for chronic disease surveillance. IMPLEMENTATION: MENDS governance was cocreated with data contributors and health departments representing Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana, Chicago, Washington, and Indiana through engagement from 2020 to 2022. MENDS convened a governance body, executed data-sharing agreements, and developed a master governance document to codify policies and procedures. RESULTS: The MENDS governance committee meets regularly to develop policies and procedures on data use and access, timeliness and quality, validation, representativeness, analytics, security, small cell suppression, software implementation and maintenance, and privacy. Resultant policies are codified in a master governance document. DISCUSSION: The MENDS governance approach resulted in a transparent governance framework that cultivates trust across the network. MENDS's experience highlights the time and resources needed by EHR-based public health surveillance networks to establish effective governance.

Background: Data sources for assessing pediatric chronic diseases and associated screening practices are rare. One example is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a common chronic liver disease prevalent among children with overweight and obesity. If undetected, NAFLD can cause liver damage. Guidelines recommend screening for NAFLD using alanine aminotransferase (ALT) tests in children ≥9 years with obesity or those with overweight and cardiometabolic risk factors. This study explores how real-world data from electronic health records (EHRs) can be used to study NAFLD screening and ALT elevation. Research Design: Using IQVIA's Ambulatory Electronic Medical Record database, we studied patients 2-19 years of age with body mass index ≥85th percentile. Using a 3-year observation period (January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2021), ALT results were extracted and assessed for elevation (≥1 ALT result ≥22.1 U/L for females and ≥25.8 U/L for males). Patients with liver disease (including NAFLD) or receiving hepatotoxic medications during 2017-2018 were excluded. Results: Among 919,203 patients 9-19 years of age, only 13% had ≥1 ALT result, including 14% of patients with obesity and 17% of patients with severe obesity. ALT results were identified for 5% of patients 2-8 years of age. Of patients with ALT results, 34% of patients 2-8 years of age and 38% of patients 9-19 years of age had ALT elevation. Males 9-19 years of age had a higher prevalence of ALT elevation than females (49% vs. 29%). Conclusions: EHR data offered novel insights into NAFLD screening: despite screening recommendations, ALT results among children with excess weight were infrequent. Among those with ALT results, ALT elevation was common, underscoring the importance of screening for early disease detection.

Background: Youth with excess weight are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Guidelines recommend screening for prediabetes and/or T2DM after 10 years of age or after puberty in youth with excess weight who have ≥1 risk factor(s) for T2DM. Electronic health records (EHRs) offer an opportunity to study the use of tests to detect diabetes in youth. Methods: We examined the frequency of (1) diabetes testing and (2) elevated test results among youth aged 10-19 years with at least one BMI measurement in an EHR from 2019 to 2021. We examined the presence of hemoglobin A1C (A1C), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), or oral glucose tolerance test (2-hour plasma glucose [2-hrPG]) results and, among those tested, the frequency of elevated values (A1C ≥6.5%, FPG ≥126 mg/dL, or 2-hrPG ≥200 mg/dL). Patients with pre-existing diabetes (n = 6793) were excluded. Results: Among 1,024,743 patients, 17% had overweight, 21% had obesity, including 8% with severe obesity. Among patients with excess weight, 10% had ≥1 glucose test result. Among those tested, elevated values were more common in patients with severe obesity (27%) and obesity (22%) than in those with healthy weight (8%), and among Black youth (30%) than White youth (13%). Among patients with excess weight, >80% of elevated values fell in the prediabetes range. Conclusions: In youth with excess weight, the use of laboratory tests for prediabetes and T2DM was infrequent. Among youth with test results, elevated FPG, 2hrPG, or A1C levels were most common in those with severe obesity and Black youth.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize and describe risk factors for running-related injuries (RRIs) among high school and collegiate cross-country runners. DESIGN: Descriptive systematic review. LITERATURE SEARCH: Four databases (Scopus, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, Cochrane) were searched from inception to August 2023. STUDY SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies assessing RRI risk factors in high school or collegiate runners using a prospective design with at least 1 season of follow-up were included. DATA SYNTHESIS: Results across each study for a given risk factor were summarized and described. The NOS and GRADE frameworks were used to evaluate quality of each study and certainty of evidence for each risk factor. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies were included. Overall, study quality and certainty of evidence were low to moderate. Females or runners with prior RRI or increased RED-S (relative energy deficiency in sport) risk factors were most at risk for RRI, as were runners with a quadriceps angle of >20° and lower step rates. Runners with weaker thigh muscle groups had increased risk of anterior knee pain. Certainty of evidence regarding training, sleep, and specialization was low, but suggests that changes in training volume, poorer sleep, and increased specialization may increase RRI risk. CONCLUSION: The strongest predictors of RRI in high school and collegiate cross-country runners were sex and RRI history, which are nonmodifiable. There was moderate certainty that increased RED-S risk factors increased RRI risk, particularly bone stress injuries. There was limited evidence that changes in training and sleep quality influenced RRI risk, but these are modifiable factors that should be studied further in this population. INTRODUCTION: Improving hypertension control is a national priority. Electronic health record data have the potential to augment traditional surveillance systems. This study aimed to assess hypertension prevalence and control at the state level using a previously established electronic health record-based phenotype for hypertension. METHODS: Adult patients (N=11,031,368) were included from the IQVIA ambulatory electronic medical record-U.S. 2019 data set. IQVIA ambulatory electronic medical record comprises electronic health records from >100,000 providers and includes patients from every U.S. state and Washington DC. Authors compared hypertension prevalence and control estimates against those from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2019. Results were age-standardized and stratified by state and sociodemographic characteristics. Statistical analyses were conducted in 2022-2023. RESULTS: IQVIA ambulatory electronic medical record-U.S. patients had a median age of 55 years, and 56.7% were women. Overall age-standardized hypertension prevalence was higher in IQVIA ambulatory electronic medical record-U.S. (35.0%) than in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (29.7%), however, state-level geographic patterns were similar, with the highest burden in the South and Appalachia. Similar patterns were also observed by sociodemographic characteristics in both data sets: hypertension prevalence was higher in older age groups (than younger), men (than women), and Black patients (than other races). Hypertension control varied widely across states: among states with >1% data coverage, control rates were lowest in Nevada (51.1%), Washington DC (52.0%), and Mississippi (55.2%); highest in Kansas (73.4%), New Jersey (72.3%), and Iowa (71.9%). CONCLUSIONS: This study provided the first-ever estimates of hypertension control for all states and Washington DC. Electronic health record-based surveillance could support hypertension prevention and control efforts at the state level.

The generation of hydrogen and reduced carbon compounds during serpentinization provides sustained energy for microorganisms on Earth, and possibly on other extraterrestrial bodies (e.g., Mars, icy satellites). However, the geochemical conditions that arise from water-rock reaction also challenge the known limits of microbial physiology, such as hyperalkaline pH, limited electron acceptors and inorganic carbon. Because cell membranes act as a primary barrier between a cell and its environment, lipids are a vital component in microbial acclimation to challenging physicochemical conditions. To probe the diversity of cell membrane lipids produced in serpentinizing settings and identify membrane adaptations to this environment, we conducted the first comprehensive intact polar lipid (IPL) biomarker survey of microbial communities inhabiting the subsurface at a terrestrial site of serpentinization. We used an expansive, custom environmental lipid database that expands the application of targeted and untargeted lipodomics in the study of microbial and biogeochemical processes. IPLs extracted from serpentinite-hosted fluid communities were comprised of >90% isoprenoidal and non-isoprenoidal diether glycolipids likely produced by archaeal methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Phospholipids only constituted ~1% of the intact polar lipidome. In addition to abundant diether glycolipids, betaine and trimethylated-ornithine aminolipids and glycosphingolipids were also detected, indicating pervasive membrane modifications in response to phosphate limitation. The carbon oxidation state of IPL backbones was positively correlated with the reduction potential of fluids, which may signify an energy conservation strategy for lipid synthesis. Together, these data suggest microorganisms inhabiting serpentinites possess a unique combination of membrane adaptations that allow for their survival in polyextreme environments. The persistence of IPLs in fluids beyond the presence of their source organisms, as indicated by 16S rRNA genes and transcripts, is promising for the detection of extinct life in serpentinizing settings through lipid biomarker signatures. These data contribute new insights into the complexity of lipid structures generated in actively serpentinizing environments and provide valuable context to aid in the reconstruction of past microbial activity from fossil lipid records of terrestrial serpentinites and the search for biosignatures elsewhere in our solar system.

OBJECTIVE: Bone stress injuries (BSIs) in trabecular-rich bone are associated with greater biological risk factors compared with cortical-rich bone. We hypothesized that female runners with high Female Athlete Triad (Triad)-related risk would be at greater risk for trabecular-rich BSIs than runners with low Triad-related risk. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Two NCAA institutions. PARTICIPANTS: Female runners were followed prospectively for up to 5 years. INTERVENTION: The intervention consisted of team nutrition presentations focused on optimizing energy availability plus individualized nutrition sessions. Triad Cumulative Risk Assessment (CRA) categories were assigned yearly based on low-energy availability, menstrual status, age of menarche, low body mass index, low bone mineral density, and prior BSI. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome was the annual incidence of trabecular- and cortical-rich BSI. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE, to account for the correlated nature of the observations) with a Poisson distribution and log link were used for statistical modeling. RESULTS: Cortical-rich BSI rates were higher than trabecular-rich BSI rates (0.32 vs 0.13 events per person-year). Female runners with high Triad-related risk had a significantly higher incidence rate ratio of trabecular-rich BSI (RR: 4.40, P = 0.025) and cortical-rich BSI (RR: 2.87, P = 0.025) than women with low Triad-related risk. Each 1-point increase in Triad CRA score was associated with a significant 26% increased risk of trabecular-rich BSI ( P = 0.0007) and a nonsignificant 14% increased risk of cortical-rich BSI ( P = 0.054). CONCLUSIONS: Increased Triad CRA scores were strongly associated with increased risk for trabecular-rich BSI. Incorporating Triad CRA scores in clinical care could guide BSI prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Modernizing chronic disease surveillance with electronic health record (EHR) data may provide better data to improve hypertension prevention and control, but no consensus exists for an EHR-based surveillance definition for hypertension. The Multi-State EHR-Based Network for Disease Surveillance (MENDS) pilot surveillance system was used to develop and test an electronic phenotype for hypertension. METHODS: We used MENDS data from 1,671,279 patients in Louisiana to examine the effect of different analytic decisions on estimates of hypertension prevalence. Decisions included 1) whether to restrict surveillance to patients with recent blood pressure measurements, 2) varying the number and recency of encounters to define the population at risk of hypertension, 3) how to define hypertension (diagnosis codes, antihypertensive medication, blood pressure measurements, or combinations of these), and 4) how to handle multiple blood pressure measurements on the same day. Results were compared with independent estimates of hypertension prevalence in Louisiana from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). RESULTS: Applying varying criteria resulted in hypertension prevalence estimates ranging from 19.7% to 59.3%. A hypertension surveillance strategy that includes a population with at least 1 clinical encounter with measured blood pressure in the previous 2 years and identifies hypertension using all available data (≥1 diagnosis code, ≥1 antihypertensive medication, and ≥2 elevated blood pressure values ≥140/90 mm Hg on separate days) generated estimates in line with population-based survey data. This definition estimated the crude 2019 hypertension prevalence in the state of Louisiana as 43.4% (age-adjusted, 41.0%), comparable with the crude BRFSS estimate of 39.7% (age adjusted, 37.1%). CONCLUSION: Applying different criteria to define hypertension using EHR data has a large effect on hypertension prevalence estimates. The proposed electronic phenotype generates hypertension prevalence estimates that align with independent estimates from BRFSS.

Importance: Information on the probability of weight loss among US adults with overweight or obesity is limited. Objective: To assess the probability of 5% or greater weight loss, 10% or greater weight loss, body mass index (BMI) reduction to a lower BMI category, and BMI reduction to the healthy weight category among US adults with initial overweight or obesity overall and by sex and race. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study obtained data from the IQVIA ambulatory electronic medical records database. The sample consists of US ambulatory patients 17 years or older with at least 3 years of BMI information from January 1, 2009, to February 28, 2022. Minimum age was set at 17 years to allow for the change in BMI or weight starting at 18 years. Maximum age was censored at 70 years. Exposures: Initial BMI (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) category was the independent variable of interest, and the categories were as follows: lower than 18.5 (underweight), 18.5 to 24.9 (healthy weight), 25.0 to 29.9 (overweight), 30.0 to 34.9 (class 1 obesity), 35.0 to 39.9 (class 2 obesity), and 40.0 to 44.9 and 45.0 or higher (class 3 or severe obesity). Main Outcomes and Measures: The 2 main outcomes were 5% or greater weight loss (ie, a ≥5% reduction in initial weight) and BMI reduction to the healthy weight category (ie, BMI of 18.5-24.9). Results: The 18 461 623 individuals in the sample had a median (IQR) age of 54 (40-66) years and included 10 464 598 females (56.7%) as well as 7.7% Black and 72.3% White patients. Overall, 72.5% of patients had overweight or obesity at the initial visit. Among adults with overweight and obesity, the annual probability of 5% or greater weight loss was low (1 in 10) but increased with higher initial BMI (from 1 in 12 individuals with initial overweight to 1 in 6 individuals with initial BMI of 45 or higher). Annual probability of BMI reduction to the healthy weight category ranged from 1 in 19 individuals with initial overweight to 1 in 1667 individuals with initial BMI of 45 or higher. Both outcomes were generally more likely among females than males and were highest among White females. Over the 3 to 14 years of follow-up, 33.4% of persons with overweight and 41.8% of persons with obesity lost 5% or greater of their initial weight. At the same time, 23.2% of persons with overweight and 2.0% of persons with obesity reduced BMI to the healthy weight category. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this cohort study indicate that the annual probability of 5% or greater weight loss was low (1 in 10) despite the known benefits of clinically meaningful weight loss, but 5% or greater weight loss was more likely than BMI reduction to the healthy weight category, especially for patients with the highest initial BMIs. Clinicians and public health efforts can focus on messaging and referrals to interventions that are aimed at clinically meaningful weight loss (ie, ≥5%) for adults at any level of excess weight.

BACKGROUND: Tarsal navicular bone stress injuries (BSIs) are considered "high risk" because of prolonged healing times and higher rates of nonunion in adult populations but, to our knowledge, have not been comprehensively examined in adolescent athletes. PURPOSE: To describe the characteristics of tarsal navicular BSIs in adolescents. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients aged 10 to 19 years with a radiographically diagnosed tarsal navicular BSI was performed at 8 academic centers over a 9-year study period. Age, sex, body mass index (BMI), primary sport, physical examination findings, imaging, treatment, surgical technique, return-to-sport time, and complications were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 110 patients (mean age, 14.7 ± 2.7 years; 65% female), common primary sports were cross-country/track and field (29/92 [32%]) and gymnastics/dance (25/92 [27%]). Grade 4 BSIs were identified in 44% (48/110) of patients, with fracture lines present on radiography or magnetic resonance imaging. Nonoperative treatment (mean age, 14.4 ± 2.6 years), consisting of protected weightbearing and either a protective boot (69/88 [78%]) or a cast (19/88 [22%]), was trialed in all patients and was successful in 94 patients (85%). Operative treatment (mean age, 17.1 ± 1.4 years) was ultimately pursued for 16 patients (15%). Patients who required surgery had a higher BMI and a higher percentage of fracture lines present on imaging (nonoperative: 36/94 [38%]; operative: 14/16 [88%]). The median time to return to weightbearing, running, and full sport was significantly longer in duration for the operative group than the nonoperative group (P <.05). Complications associated with surgery included 1 case each of delayed union, nonunion, and painful implants, the latter of which required secondary surgery. CONCLUSION: Adolescent tarsal navicular BSIs were identified most commonly in female patients in leanness sports. Adolescents who required surgery were more likely to be older, have higher BMIs, and have grade 4 BSIs, and they returned to sport within a median of 5 months after single- or double-screw fixation with a low risk of postoperative complications. A better understanding of the presenting signs and symptoms and appropriate diagnostic imaging of navicular BSIs may lead to an earlier diagnosis and improved outcomes.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential element for life. N compounds such as ammonium ( NH 4 + ) may act as electron donors, while nitrate ( NO 3 - ) and nitrite ( NO 2 - ) may serve as electron acceptors to support energy metabolism. However, little is known regarding the availability and forms of N in subsurface ecosystems, particularly in serpentinite-hosted settings where hydrogen (H2) generated through water-rock reactions promotes habitable conditions for microbial life. Here, we analyzed N and oxygen (O) isotope composition to investigate the source, abundance, and cycling of N species within the Samail Ophiolite of Oman. The dominant dissolved N species was dependent on the fluid type, with Mg2+- HCO 3 - type fluids comprised mostly of NO 3 - , and Ca2+-OH- fluids comprised primarily of ammonia (NH3). We infer that fixed N is introduced to the serpentinite aquifer as NO 3 - . High concentrations of NO 3 - (>100 µM) with a relict meteoric oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O ~ 22‰, Δ17O ~ 6‰) were observed in shallow aquifer fluids, indicative of NO 3 - sourced from atmospheric deposition (rainwater NO 3 - : δ18O of 53.7‰, Δ17O of 16.8‰) mixed with NO 3 - produced in situ through nitrification (estimated endmember δ18O and Δ17O of ~0‰). Conversely, highly reacted hyperalkaline fluids had high concentrations of NH3 (>100 µM) with little NO 3 - detectable. We interpret that NH3 in hyperalkaline fluids is a product of NO 3 - reduction. The proportionality of the O and N isotope fractionation (18ε / 15ε) measured in Samail Ophiolite NO 3 - was close to unity (18ε / 15ε ~ 1), which is consistent with dissimilatory NO 3 - reduction with a membrane-bound reductase (NarG); however, abiotic reduction processes may also be occurring. The presence of genes commonly involved in N reduction processes (narG, napA, nrfA) in the metagenomes of biomass sourced from aquifer fluids supports potential biological involvement in the consumption of NO 3 - . Production of NH 4 + as the end-product of NO 3 - reduction via dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) could retain N in the subsurface and fuel nitrification in the oxygenated near surface. Elevated bioavailable N in all sampled fluids indicates that N is not likely limiting as a nutrient in serpentinites of the Samail Ophiolite.

Objectives: We evaluated the effect of a nutrition education intervention on bone stress injury (BSI) incidence among female distance runners at two NCAA Division I institutions. Methods: Historical BSI rates were measured retrospectively (2010-2013); runners were then followed prospectively in pilot (2013-2016) and intervention (2016-2020) phases. The primary aim was to compare BSI rates in the historical and intervention phases. Pilot phase data are included only for descriptive purposes. The intervention comprised team nutrition presentations focused on optimising energy availability plus individualised nutrition sessions for runners with elevated Female Athlete Triad risk. Annual BSI rates were calculated using a generalised estimating equation Poisson regression model adjusted for age and institution. Post hoc analyses were stratified by institution and BSI type (trabecular-rich or cortical-rich). Results: The historical phase included 56 runners and 90.2 person-years; the intervention phase included 78 runners and 137.3 person-years. Overall BSI rates were not reduced from the historical (0.52 events per person-year) to the intervention (0.43 events per person-year) phase. Post hoc analyses demonstrated trabecular-rich BSI rates dropped significantly from 0.18 to 0.10 events per person-year from the historical to intervention phase (p=0.047). There was a significant interaction between phase and institution (p=0.009). At Institution 1, the overall BSI rate dropped from 0.63 to 0.27 events per person-year from the historical to intervention phase (p=0.041), whereas no decline was observed at Institution 2. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a nutrition intervention emphasising energy availability may preferentially impact trabecular-rich BSI and depend on team environment, culture and resources.

For adults, increasing cadence reduces ground reaction forces, but a lower preferred cadence does not predispose adults to experience higher ground reaction forces. Pubertal growth and motor control changes influence running mechanics, but it is unknown if preferred cadence or step length are associated with ground reaction forces for pre-adolescent and adolescent runners. Pre-adolescent and adolescent runners underwent an overground running analysis at a self-selected speed. Mixed model multiple linear regressions investigated the associations of preferred cadence, step length, physical maturation, and sex on ground reaction forces, while accounting for running speed and leg length. Running with a lower preferred cadence or longer preferred step length was associated with larger peak braking and vertical forces (p ≤ .01), being less physically mature was associated with larger vertical impact peak force and vertical loading rate (p ≤ .01), and being a male was associated with larger loading rates (p ≤ .01). A lower preferred cadence or longer preferred step length were associated with higher braking and vertical forces and being less physically mature or a male were associated with higher loading rates. An intervention to increase cadence/decrease step length could be considered if ground reaction forces are a concern for an adolescent runner.

The process of serpentinization supports life on Earth and gives rise to the habitability of other worlds in our Solar System. While numerous studies have provided clues to the survival strategies of microbial communities in serpentinizing environments on the modern Earth, characterizing microbial activity in such environments remains challenging due to low biomass and extreme conditions. Here, we used an untargeted metabolomics approach to characterize dissolved organic matter in groundwater in the Samail Ophiolite, the largest and best characterized example of actively serpentinizing uplifted ocean crust and mantle. We found that dissolved organic matter composition is strongly correlated with both fluid type and microbial community composition, and that the fluids that were most influenced by serpentinization contained the greatest number of unique compounds, none of which could be identified using the current metabolite databases. Using metabolomics in conjunction with metagenomic data, we detected numerous products and intermediates of microbial metabolic processes and identified potential biosignatures of microbial activity, including pigments, porphyrins, quinones, fatty acids, and metabolites involved in methanogenesis. Metabolomics techniques like the ones used in this study may be used to further our understanding of life in serpentinizing environments, and aid in the identification of biosignatures that can be used to search for life in serpentinizing systems on other worlds.
