RESUMO
Fetal umbilical artery flow was measured with Doppler ultrasound technique in 206 cases of the uncomplicated pregnancy. Indices A/B and R.I. were calculated. It was shown that vascular resistance in the umbilical artery is decreasing in the normal pregnancy parallel to its development and is manifested by the changes in A/B and R.I. values.

The authors analysed perinatal mortality and the condition of 32 newborns of 30 pregnant women with a severe form of gestosis EPH, who did not react to therapy. In all the women the pregnancy was terminated prematurely between 29th and 37th week (not later than 7 days admission to hospital) because of threat to the fetus, threat to the pregnant woman due to renal failure or threat both to the fetus and the woman. In spite of the fact that the newborns had a lower birth weight in comparison with newborns born in the previous years, the above procedure led to the sixfold reduction of perinatal mortality. Fetal hypotrophia amounted to 43% and was ten times higher than in general population.

PIP: The Omega IUD was used as a prosthesis in the uterine cavity for prevention of uterine adhesions in 22 women undergoing reconstructive operations of the uterus (In 9 cases of bicornuate uterus. Strassmann's operation was used and in 13 cases of uterine body myomata, myomectomy was performed). The IUDs remained in the uterine cavity for 3-4 months and were inserted and removed easily. The Omega IUD was very useful in these operations and no complications were observed in connection with their use. (author's modified)^ieng

PIP: The abortion problem has been a major topic of debate for many years. Polish legislation permitting abortion has both supporters and opponents. It appears that both groups fail to fully recognize the risks of the various medical complications of induced abortion. A literature review of the complications of abortion shows that these complications are often underestimated by the public and the medical community. The review clearly demonstrates that abortion adversely affects women's health. Inflammation of the genital system is the most frequent complication. The ocurrence of complications increases as the term of the pregnancy advances. It is concluded that the public is not fully aware of the immediate danger and aftereffects of induced abortion. Wider popularization of the extensive body of scientific information regarding the risks of induced abortion might change current perceptions about the "safety" of abortion.^ieng
