RESUMO

High-order interactions are required across brain regions to accomplish specific cognitive functions. These functional interdependencies are reflected by synergistic information that can be obtained by combining the information from all the sources considered and redundant information (i.e., common information provided by all the sources). However, electroencephalogram (EEG) functional connectivity is limited to pairwise interactions thereby precluding the estimation of high-order interactions. In this multicentric study, we used measures of synergistic and redundant information to study in parallel the high-order interactions between five EEG electrodes during three non-ordinary states of consciousness (NSCs): Rajyoga meditation (RM), hypnosis, and auto-induced cognitive trance (AICT). We analyzed EEG data from 22 long-term Rajyoga meditators, nine volunteers undergoing hypnosis, and 21 practitioners of AICT. We here report the within-group changes in synergy and redundancy for each NSC in comparison with their respective baseline. During RM, synergy increased at the whole brain level in the delta and theta bands. Redundancy decreased in frontal, right central, and posterior electrodes in delta, and frontal, central, and posterior electrodes in beta1 and beta2 bands. During hypnosis, synergy decreased in mid-frontal, temporal, and mid-centro-parietal electrodes in the delta band. The decrease was also observed in the beta2 band in the left frontal and right parietal electrodes. During AICT, synergy decreased in delta and theta bands in left-frontal, right-frontocentral, and posterior electrodes. The decrease was also observed at the whole brain level in the alpha band. However, redundancy changes during hypnosis and AICT were not significant. The subjective reports of absorption and dissociation during hypnosis and AICT, as well as the mystical experience questionnaires during AICT, showed no correlation with the high-order measures. The proposed study is the first exploratory attempt to utilize the concepts of synergy and redundancy in NSCs. The differences in synergy and redundancy during different NSCs warrant further studies to relate the extracted measures with the phenomenology of the NSCs.

RESUMO

Meditation practices are considered mental training and have increasingly received attention from the scientific community due to their potential psychological and physical health benefits. We compared the EEG data recorded from long-term rajayoga practitioners during different meditative and non-meditative periods. Minimum variance modified fuzzy entropy (MVMFE) is computed for each EEG band for all channels of a given lobe. The means across all the channel entropy values were obtained and compared during meditative and non-meditative states. Meditators showed higher frontal entropy in the lower gamma band (25-45Hz) during the meditative states. Independent component analysis was applied to ensure that muscle or eye artifacts did not contribute to the gamma activity. Our results extend previous findings on the changes in entropy observed in long-term meditators during rajayoga practice. Gamma band in EEG is implicated in cognitive processes requiring high-level processing such as attention, learning, memory control, and retrieval. Gamma activity is also suggested as a potential biomarker for therapeutic progress in patients with clinical depression. Based on our findings, there is an excellent possibility to utilize the practice of meditation as a training tool to strengthen the neural circuits, where age-related degeneration is making its pathological impact.

RESUMO

The present investigation mainly concentrates on work done in order to explore physical, mechanical & tribological characteristics of Al6061 alloy reinforced with nano-sized zirconium dioxide particulates. Four casts of different percentages of reinforcement from 0 to 6 wt% in the steps of 2 are fabricated using liquid metallurgy technique (stir casting). The prepared composites later subjected to various physical, mechanical & wear tests and results were studied. The tests were carried out in accordance with the ASTM standards on the alloy and nano-composites. In the present investigation the physical and mechanical properties like density, hardness and tensile strength increased significantly with the increase in percentage of reinforcement in the matrix alloy, while the percentage elongation found to be decreased. The sliding wear tests were performed by using pin-on-disc the tribometer and results indicated that wear resistance of composites was higher. Off the four compositions, there were improved properties of composites with higher weight percent of reinforcement. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) micrographs was used after tensile testing to study fractured surfaces of specimens and wear morphology after wear testing. Overall the investigational outcomes are very interesting and motivates to do further more research.

RESUMO

TRPA1 is a non-selective cation channel originated in invertebrates. The genomic locus containing TRPA1 gene remains highly conserved and retained in all vertebrates. TRPA1 gene is evolutionarily selected, yet maintained as a highly diverged protein. Throughout the vertebrate evolution, the extracellular loops of TRPA1 become most diverged indicating that TRPA1 may be involved in detecting large spectrum and uncertain stimulus which is critical for adaptive benefit. We tested the expression of TRPA1 in mature sperm from different vertebrates. This is the first report demonstrating that TRPA1 is expressed endogenously in mature spermatozoa of multiple species representing entire vertebrate phyla. However, its specific localization within sperm remains species-specific. Accordingly, we report that in rodents TRPA1 expression correlates with different stages of spermatogenesis. We propose that presence of endogenous TRPA1 in testes and in mature sperm provides reproductive benefit.

RESUMO

Electroencephalogram shortly termed as EEG is considered as the fundamental segment for the assessment of the neural activities in the brain. In cognitive neuroscience domain, EEG-based assessment method is found to be superior due to its non-invasive ability to detect deep brain structure while exhibiting superior spatial resolutions. Especially for studying the neurodynamic behavior of epileptic seizures, EEG recordings reflect the neuronal activity of the brain and thus provide required clinical diagnostic information for the neurologist. This specific proposed study makes use of wavelet packet based log and norm entropies with a recurrent Elman neural network (REN) for the automated detection of epileptic seizures. Three conditions, normal, pre-ictal and epileptic EEG recordings were considered for the proposed study. An adaptive Weiner filter was initially applied to remove the power line noise of 50 Hz from raw EEG recordings. Raw EEGs were segmented into 1 s patterns to ensure stationarity of the signal. Then wavelet packet using Haar wavelet with a five level decomposition was introduced and two entropies, log and norm were estimated and were applied to REN classifier to perform binary classification. The non-linear Wilcoxon statistical test was applied to observe the variation in the features under these conditions. The effect of log energy entropy (without wavelets) was also studied. It was found from the simulation results that the wavelet packet log entropy with REN classifier yielded a classification accuracy of 99.70 % for normal-pre-ictal, 99.70 % for normal-epileptic and 99.85 % for pre-ictal-epileptic.

RESUMO

Besifloxacin is a unique chiral broad-spectrum flouroquinolone used in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. R-form of besifloxacin hydrochloride shows higher antibacterial activity as compared to the S-isomer. Therefore, it is necessary to establish chiral purity. To establish chiral purity a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for determination of R-besifloxacin and S-besifloxacin (BES impurity A) was developed and validated for in-process quality control and stability studies. The analytical performance parameters such as linearity, precision, accuracy, specificity, limit of detection (LOD), and lower limit of quantification (LOQ) were determined according to International Council for Harmonization ICH Q2(R1) guidelines. HPLC separation was achieved on Chiralpak AD-H (250 x 4.6 mm, 5 µm) column using n-heptane: ethanol: ethylenediamine: acetic acid (800:200:0.5:0.5) (v/v/v/v) as the mobile phase in an isocratic elution. The eluents were monitored by UV/Visible detector at 290 nm. The resolution between S-isomer and besifloxacin hydrochloride was more than 2.0. Based on a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 and 10 the LOD of besifloxacin was 0.30 µg/mL, while the LOQ was 0.90 µg/mL. The calibration curves were linear in the range of 0.9-7.5 µg/mL. Precision of the method was established within the acceptable range. The method was suitable for the quality control enantiomeric impurity in besifloxacin hydrochloride. RESUMO

Whereas in all other vertebrates the Müllerian ducts of genetic males are aborted during development, under the influence of Müllerian-inhibiting substance, in the caecilian amphibians they are retained as a pair of functional glands. It has long been speculated that the Müllerian gland might be the male accessory reproductive gland but there has been no direct evidence to this effect. The present study was undertaken to determine whether the caecilian Müllerian gland secretory proteins would bear antigenic similarity to secretory proteins of the prostate gland and/or the seminal vesicles of a mammal. The secretory proteins of the Müllerian gland of Ichthyophis tricolor were evaluated for cross-reactivity with antisera raised against rat ventral prostate and seminal vesicle secretory proteins, adopting SDS-PAGE, two-dimensional electrophoresis and immunoblot techniques. Indeed there was a cross-reaction of five Müllerian gland secretory protein fractions with prostatic protein antiserum and of three with seminal vesicle protein antiserum. A potential homology exists because in mammals the middle group of the prostate primordia is derived from a diverticulum of the Müllerian duct. Thus this study, by providing evidence for expression of prostatic and seminal vesicle proteins in the Müllerian gland, substantiates the point that in caecilians the Müllerian glands are the male accessory reproductive glands.

RESUMO

Cranial sutures give a wide estimate of age and asymmetric closure of sutures is likely to further complicate the process of age estimation from the closure of cranial sutures. Literature on the estimation of age from squamous suture is limited. A rare case of asymmetric closure of squamous suture is reported along with a review of literature. The reported case highlights on the fact that asymmetric closure of the sutures may cause inaccuracies in age estimation when only one half of the skull is available for forensic examination. Asymmetric closure of sutures may also lead to erroneous opinion on the number of individuals in cases when fragments of skull are brought for medicolegal investigation.

RESUMO

Estimation of stature is one of the principal elements in practical forensic casework involving examination of skeletal remains. The present study was undertaken to estimate stature from the length of the sternum in South Indian females using a linear regression equation. The material for the present study consisted of intact sternums belonging to adult females of South Indian origin aged between 25 and 35 years of age obtained during medico-legal autopsies. The length of the sternum was measured as the combined length of the manubrium and the mesosternum (body of the sternum) from the incisura jugularis (central suprasternal notch) to the mesoxiphoid junction along the mid-sagittal plane using vernier calipers. A linear regression equation [Stature = 111.599 + (3.316 × Length of the sternum)] was derived to estimate stature from the length of the sternum. The correlation coefficient was 0.639. The standard error of the estimate was 4.11 cm. The present study concludes that the length of the sternum is a reliable predictor of stature in adult South Indian females and can be used as a tool for stature estimation when better predictors of stature like the long bones of the limbs are not available when examining skeletal remains.

RESUMO

Sex determination from prepubertal human remains is a challenge for forensic experts and physical anthropologists worldwide as definitive sexual traits are not manifested until after the full development of secondary sexual characters that appear during puberty. The research was undertaken in 350 South Indian adolescents to investigate sexual dimorphism of the index and ring finger ratio. The index finger length (IFL) and the ring finger length (RFL) were measured in millimeters in each hand and the index and ring finger ratio was computed by dividing the index finger length by the ring finger length. Mean RFL was greater than mean IFL in both males and females. Mean RFL was significantly higher in males. The index and ring finger ratio showed a statistically significant difference between males and females (p

RESUMO

The fingerprints are very typical for a human being. The present study was undertaken to study the gender differences in fingerprint ridge density in Chinese and Malaysian population. The study done on 200 subjects (100 males and 100 females) of Chinese origin and 100 subjects (50 males and 50 females) of Malaysian origin revealed that significant gender differences occur in the finger ridge density. Fingerprint mean ridge density of 12 ridges/25 mm(2) or less is found to be more likely to be of males and a mean ridge count of more the 13 ridges/25 mm(2) is more likely of female origin in Chinese subjects. Fingerprint mean ridge density of 11 ridges/25 mm(2) or less is found to be more likely to be of males and a mean ridge count of more the 13 ridges/25 mm(2) is more likely of female origin in Malaysian subjects.

RESUMO

Estimation of stature is one of the important initial steps during forensic analysis of human skeletal remains. The aim of the present study was to derive a linear regression formula for estimating stature of adult South Indian males from the length of the sternum. The study included 35 male sternums of South Indian origin dissected from cadavers during medico-legal autopsies. The linear regression equation [Stature=117.784 + (3.429 x Sternal length)] was derived to estimate the stature from the length of the sternum. The correlation coefficient was 0.638. The standard error of the estimate was 5.64 cm. This preliminary study concludes that the length of the sternum can be used as a tool for stature estimation in adult South Indian males.

RESUMO

Organophosphorus poisoning occurs very commonly in southern India where farmers form a significant proportion of the population who commonly use organophosphorus compounds like parathion as insecticides. Awareness of the complications caused by parathion poisoning is essential for proper monitoring and treatment. We report a case of suicidal parathion poisoning in a farmer who was treated with atropine and oximes. He subsequently developed myocardial infarction, to the treatment of which, he showed no response and succumbed. In conclusion, myocardial infarction is a rare complication of parathion poisoning. Awareness of this complication of parathion poisoning, proper monitoring and treatment could prevent fatalities.

RESUMO

Identification of human remains is an imperative element of any medicolegal investigation, and a challenging task for forensic experts and physical anthropologists worldwide. Three hundred adult hands (150 males and 150 females) belonging to south Indian population were studied to investigate sexual dimorphism of the index and ring finger ratio. The index and ring finger ratio is derived by dividing the index finger length by ring finger length. The index and ring finger ratio is found to be higher in females. Index and ring finger ratio < or =0.9700 identified 80% of males for both hands, and ratio >0.9700 identified 74% females for the right hand and 78% for the left hand accurately. This study may prove useful to determine the sex of an isolated hand when it is subjected for medicolegal examination.

RESUMO

A point mutation in the Stat5b DNA binding domain in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse was shown to have weaker DNA binding compared with the B6 Stat5b. Here, we assessed the binding ability of the mutant Stat5b in the B6 genetic background (B6.NOD-c11) and the wild-type Stat5b in the NOD background (NOD.Lc11). To our surprise, the binding ability of Stat5b is inconsistent with the presence or absence of the Stat5b mutation in these congenic mice but is correlated with the expression levels of the Crkl protein, which was coprecipitated by an anti-Stat5b antibody. Both the expression of Crkl and the Stat5b binding ability are the highest in B6.NOD-c11 and the lowest in NOD while intermediate in B6 and NOD.Lc11 mice. We demonstrated that the adapter molecule Crkl can bind Stat5b and that the Crkl protein is a Stat5b binding cofactor. More importantly, profection of Crkl recombinant protein significantly increased Stat5b binding ability and rescued the binding defect of the NOD mutant Stat5b, suggesting that Crkl is a key regulatory molecule for Stat5b binding. Therefore, the defective Crkl expression may contribute to the development of diabetes in the NOD mice by exacerbating the defective Stat5b binding ability.

RESUMO

Pattern of unnatural deaths is a reflection of the prevailing social set up and mental health status of the region. In an attempt to understand the magnitude and pattern of unnatural deaths in Manipal, Southern India, a 11-year retrospective study was carried out in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. The study revealed a rise in road traffic fatalities (37%) that constituted the majority of autopsies carried out followed by death due to poisoning and burns. Male preponderance was quite evident (2.5:1) except for death due to burns where ratio was reversed (1:2.9). People in 3rd decade were most prone to such fatalities. Of the total medicolegal autopsies conducted in this period, the manner of death was unnatural in 98% of the cases and 71% of them were accidental in nature.

RESUMO

The forensic pathologist is responsible for determining the cause, manner and approximate time of death and injury. After recording the detailed description of the external and internal appearances, a short summary should be offered of the major positive findings and their relationship to the cause of death. In many cases this will be obvious, however when the findings are less clear-cut, or are multiple, then the alternatives should be discussed detailing the possible sequence of events and interpreting the findings in concluding the cause of death. It is essential to causally connect the autopsy findings to the cause of death. We present a case report wherein a person who sustained avulsion injury to his left hand in an industrial accident, died due to, fulminant hepatitis, hepatic encephalopathy and acute renal failure, having undergone six operations under general anesthesia with halothane during his stay in the hospital.

RESUMO

A number of cytokines that finely regulate immune response have been implicated in the pathogenesis or protection of type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. It is, therefore, of pivotal importance to examine a family of proteins that serve as signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs), which regulate the transcription of a variety of cytokines. We report here a defective gene (Stat5b) located on chromosome 11 within a previously mapped T1D susceptibility interval (Idd4) in the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice. Our sequencing analysis revealed a unique mutation C1462A that results in a leucine to methionine (L327M) in Stat5b of NOD mice. Leu(327), the first residue in the DNA binding domain of STAT proteins, is conserved in all identified mammalian STAT proteins. Homology modeling predicted that the mutant Stat5b has a weaker DNA binding, which was confirmed by DNA-protein binding assays. The inapt transcriptional regulation ability of the mutated Stat5b is proved by decreased levels of RNA of Stat5b-regulated genes (IL-2Rbeta and Pim1). Consequently, IL-2Rbeta and Pim1 proteins were shown by Western blotting to have lower levels in NOD compared with normal B6 mice. These proteins have been implicated in immune regulation, apoptosis, activation-induced cell death, and control of autoimmunity. Therefore, the Stat5b pathway is a key molecular defect in NOD mice.
