RESUMO

Carnoy's solution (CS) is routinely used as adjuvant therapy in the management of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and a few other benign lesions. The purpose of this study was to explore the evidence of its application and efficacy in benign lesions other than OKC. We have systematically reviewed published articles to identify the evidence of CS in benign jaw lesions other than OKC following the PRISMA guidelines. The search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Cochrane Library database, to find relevant articles from 1980 to March 2020. Finally, 39 studies were analysed in this review. It included studies where CS was used as an adjunct for the benign lesion of the jaw and followed for a minimum of 6 months. Thirty-nine studies with 11 different types of lesion were reported where CS was used as an adjuvant and application time was restricted to 3-5minutes. Recurrence were reported only in ameloblastoma cases [unicystic=10.98% (10/91), mixed=18.18% (26/143)]. Meta-analysis was not possible as all studies were non-controlled in nature. Based on the available data, there was no strong evidence for the use of CS as an adjuvant in the benign lesion of the jaw. Prospective and randomised control studies are recommended for the best stratification for the use of CS.

RESUMO

We designed this study to determine the efficiency and stability of anterior segmental osteotomies (ASO) without orthodontics for various dentofacial deformities. Records of patients treated with maxillary or mandibular ASO, or both, without orthodontics in the past 15 years were analysed. The assessment included postoperative analysis of patients' aesthetics and functional satisfaction using a questionnaire and grading (score 0 - 4) system, and the amount of relapse calculated from 12-month postoperative cephalograms. A total of 26 ASO subjects (age range 13- 31 years) were studied (14 maxillary, two mandibular, and 10 bimaxillary). Long-term stability was acceptable in all cases with no significant relapse (p>0.05). No major complications were encountered. All patients reported good to excellent (score=3 to 4) satisfaction following surgery. Using meticulous planning and a careful surgical technique, ASO without orthodontics is a simple, quick, safe, and stable option for the correction of dentofacial deformities.

RESUMO

The study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of ground water for irrigation purpose at twenty seven locations in Coimbatore South Taluk, Coimbatore District. The analytical result shows that Na and Cl are the dominant cation and anions respectively in the groundwater. The values of TDS and EC exceed the permissible limits at some locations due to increase in ionic concentrations. Based on SAR, RSC, US Salinity diagram and Wilcox diagram it is observed that the water ranges from excellent to good quality in most of the places and can be used for irrigation without any hazard. Gibbs variation diagram indicates that lithology is main controlling factor for water chemistry. However, the high SAR and RSC values at few locations restrict suitability for irrigation purpose.

RESUMO

Tracheal tube cuffs are commonly inflated to pressures exceeding the recommended upper limit of 30 cmH(2)O. We evaluated whether a stethoscope-guided method of cuff inflation results in pressures within the recommended range. Patients were randomly assigned to receive one of two methods of cuff inflation. In the standard 'just seal' group, air was introduced into the tracheal cuff until the audible leak at the mouth disappeared. In the stethoscope-guided group, air was introduced into the cuff until a change from harsh to soft breath sounds occurred, whilst listening with a stethoscope bell placed over the thyroid cartilage. Twenty-five patients were recruited to each group. The median (IQR [range]) cuff pressure in the 'just seal' group was 34 (28-40 [18-49]) cmH(2)O, and in the stethoscope-guided group was 20 (20-26 [16-28]) cmH(2)O, p < 0.0001. The stethoscope-guided method of tracheal tube cuff inflation is a novel, simple technique that reliably results in acceptable tracheal cuff pressures.

RESUMO

Different subpopulations of adult primary sensory neurons in the dorsal root ganglia express receptors for different trophic factors, and are therefore potentially responsive to distinct trophic signals. We have compared the effect of the neurotrophins nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and NT-3, and of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) on neurite outgrowth in dissociated cultures of sensory neurons from the lumbar ganglia of young adult rats, and attempted to establish subset-specific effects of these trophic factors. We analysed three parameters of neurite growth (percentage of process-bearing neurons, length of longest neurite and total neurite length), which may correlate with particular types of axon growth in vivo, and may therefore respond differently to trophic factor presence. Our results showed that percentage of process-bearing neurons and total neurite length were influenced by trophic factors, whilst the length of the longest neurite was trophic factor independent. Only NGF and GDNF were found to enhance significantly the proportion of process-bearing neurons in vitro. GDNF was more effective than NGF on small, IB4- neurons, which are known to develop GDNF responsiveness early in postnatal development. NGF, and to a much lesser extent GDNF, enhanced the total length of the neurites produced by neurons in culture. BDNF exerted an inhibitory effect on growth, and both BDNF and NT-3 could partially block some of the growth-promoting effects of NGF on specific neuronal subpopulations.
