RESUMO

Recent advancements in flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have widely focused on converting mechanical energy into electrical energy to power small wearable electronic gadgets and sensors. To effectively achieve this, an efficient energy-converted power management circuit is required. Herein, we report on Aurivillius-type strontium bismuth titanate (SrBi4Ti4O15) nanoparticles (SBT NPs)-loaded polyglucosamine (PGA) composite film-based flexible TENG to be used for energy harvesting/storage and biomechanical applications. Initially, SBT NPs were synthesized and then, different weight concentrations were loaded into PGA. The TENG devices were fabricated using different wt % composite films (SBT/PGA) and polydimethylsiloxane as positive and negative triboelectric layers, respectively, and aluminum was used as a conductive electrode attached to two tribo films. To evaluate the electrical output from the device, contact-separation operation mode was used. An optimized TENG consisting of 2 wt % SBT/PGA composite film produced the maximum electrical output voltage and current of approximately ∼239 V and ∼7.5 µA, respectively. Efficient TENG energy harvesting and storage circuits have been proposed for storing charges in capacitors and for operating electronic gadgets. The optimized TENG was employed to generate electrical energy from various biomechanical movements. Thereafter, the biodegradability of the composite film was also tested. The fabricated films were completely biodegraded within a few hours. Furthermore, the TENG was utilized as a tap-indication transducer for multipurpose switching applications.

RESUMO

Oleaginous yeast can produce lipids while degrading phenol in wastewater treatment. In this study, a Plackett-Burman Design (PBD) was adopted to identify key factors of phenol degradation and lipid production using R toruloides 9564T. While temperature, inoculum size, and agitation were significant for both the processes (p < 0.05), pH and incubation were significant for lipid production, and phenol removal, respectively. Results from four factors (pH, temperature, inoculum size, and incubation period) central composite design (CCD) experiment were used to formulate quadratic and genetic algorithm-optimized ANN models. The reduced quadratic model for phenol degradation (R2: 0.993) and lipid production (R2: 0.958) were marginally inferior to ANN models (R2: 0.999, 0.982, respectively) on training sets. Multi-objective optimization with equal importance suggests phenol degradation between 106.4 and 108.76%, and lipid production of 0.864-0.903 g/L, by polynomial and ANN models. Complete phenol degradation (100%) and 3.35-fold increment (0.918 g/L) in lipid production were obtained at pH 6.07, inoculum size 14.68% v/v, at 29.5 °C in 92.17 h experimentally.

RESUMO

The improper disposal of petroleum-based plastics has been associated with detrimental environmental consequences, such as the proliferation of microplastic pollution and increased emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Consequently, biopolymers have emerged as a highly regarded alternative due to their environmental-friendly attributes and versatile range of applications. In response to consumer demands for safer food options, sustainable packaging, and escalating environmental concerns, the food sector is increasingly adopting biopolymers. Further, in the recent decade, the usage of active or functional biopolymers has evolved into smart biopolymers that can transmit real-time data to consumers. This review covers key topics such as antimicrobial and biodegradable packaging, edible coatings and films, incorporation of scavengers and bioactive substances that prolong the shelf life and guard against moisture and microbial contamination. The paper also discusses the development of edible cutlery as a sustainable substitute for plastic, the encapsulation of bioactive substances within biopolymers, 3-D food printing for regulated nutrition delivery and thickening and gelling agents that improve food texture and stability. It also discusses the integration of smart polymer functions, demonstrating their importance in guaranteeing food safety and quality, such as biosensing, pH and gas detection, antibacterial characteristics, and time-temperature monitoring. By shedding light on market trends, future scope, and potentialities, this review aims to elucidate the prospects of utilizing biopolymers to address sustainability and quality concerns within the food industry effectively.

RESUMO

Exertion and exercise increase glucose metabolism within the skeletal muscles causing increased fludeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on 18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Here, we present findings of 18F-FDG PET/CT in a patient with acute viral hepatitis A-induced liver failure with multiple foci of pyoderma and incessant itching resulting in increased FDG uptake in the muscles of the bilateral forearm, producing the "bilateral hot forearm sign."

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a leading cause of mortality among genitourinary malignancies with limited therapeutic options. The hematogenous route, lymphatic spread, and direct invasion have been documented in RCC. Usually, metastases are regional lymph nodes, lungs, bone, liver, adrenal glands, contralateral kidney, and brain. Metastases to the rare sites such as skin, breast, head and neck were documented in the literature. In the present case, we describe the synchronous metastases to the base of the tongue and thyroid gland in RCC and the response to sunitinib therapy on 18F-FDG PET/CT.

RESUMO

Fibromatoses are a heterogeneous group of benign proliferating fibroblasts and myofibroblasts which have a high predilection for recurrence and local invasion, especially deep fibromatoses or desmoid fibromatosis. 18F-FDG PET/CT, the workhorse of oncological imaging in nuclear medicine, can be employed to figure out the nature and aggressiveness of the lesions and various sites of involvement and to monitor treatment response to systemic therapies like tyrosine kinase inhibitors in case of deep or desmoid fibromatoses which is shown in the current research work.

RESUMO

68Ga-PSMA PET/CT has been routinely utilized in patients with intermediate to high-risk category prostate carcinoma for staging, biochemical recurrence and before planning the PSMA radioligand therapy (RLT). 177Lu-PSMA RLT has also been approved by FDA as a novel treatment modality in metastatic carcinoma prostate patients who have failed to other lines of treatment. The non-target organs like salivary and lacrimal glands have shown to have high physiological PSMA uptake on PSMA PET/CT. Recently, strong uptake of PSMA ligand has also been noted in the dorsal wall of the nasopharynx in the region of torus tubarius on PSMA PET/CT, which has led to the identification of new pair of salivary gland structures called "tubarial salivary glands". The clinical significance of these distinct anatomical structures lies in the fact these structures might be involved in a variety of immune related, inflammatory disorders, malignancies and could be a probable organ at risk during radiotherapy in case of head and neck malignancies, causing adverse effects to the patient.

RESUMO

E-waste management has become a global concern because of the enormous rise in the rate of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment's (EEEs). Disposal of waste EEE directly into the environment leads to adverse effects on the environment as well as on human health. For the management of E-waste, numerous studies have been carried out for extracting metals (base, precious, and rare earth) following pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and biometallurgy. Irrespective of the advantages of these processes, certain limitations still exist with each of these options in terms of their adoption as treatment techniques. Several journal publications regarding the different processes have been made which aids in future research in the field of E-waste management. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the various metal recovery processes (pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, and biometallurgy) from E-waste, along with their advantages and limitations. A bibliometric study based on the published articles using different keywords in Scopus has been provided for a complete idea about E-waste with green technology perspective like bioleaching, biosorption, etc. The present study also focussed on the circular economic approach towards sustainable E-waste management along with its socio-economic aspects and the economic growth of the country. The present study would provide valuable knowledge in understanding E-waste and its different treatment processes to the students, researchers, industrialists, and policymakers of the country.

RESUMO

In this study, an effort has been undertaken to study process design, techno-economic analysis, and life-cycle assessment (LCA) of lignin hydrogel (LH) which has potential applications in environmental remediation. Minimum selling price (MSP) of LHs has been estimated to be 2,141 US$/ton and it lies within the range of market price (1,420-2,280 US$/ton) for commercial coagulants. Further, sensitivity analysis has been conducted and it was observed that "% efficiency of lignin hydrogel production" and "lignin price" were the most influential parameters. Uncertainty analysis has also been conducted to study the influence of volatility in the market price of lignin and total capital investment on MSP of LH. From LCA study, it was estimated that the proposed process will emit 2.8 kg CO2 eq. and 1.1 kg Oil eq./kg lignin hydrogel. The developed process can be utilized for lignin upgradation in biorefineries to develop economically feasible and sustainable processes.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Doppler ultrasonography and testicular scintigraphy are sensitive techniques to detect the adequacy of blood flow to testicular tissue. Because Doppler ultrasonography is an operator-dependent imaging modality, it can result in equivocal findings. Testicular scintigraphy proves to be more accurate in such cases, but it may be inconclusive on occasion. The authors report the case of a young man with a left undescended testis where testicular scintigraphy was inconclusive for viability and 18F-FDG PET/CT provided important diagnostic information.

RESUMO

The rapid growth in population has increased the demand for potable water. Available technologies for its generation are the desalination of sea water through reverse osmosis, electrodialysis etc., which are energy and cost intensive. In this context, microbial desalination cell (MDC) presents a low-cost and sustainable option which can simultaneously treat wastewater, desalinate saline water, produce electrical energy and recover nutrients from wastewater. This review paper is focussed on presenting a detailed analysis of MDCs starting from the principle of operation, microbial community analysis, basic architecture, evolution in design, operational challenges, effect of process parameters, scale-up studies, application in multiple arenas and future prospects. After thorough review, it can be inferred that MDCs can be used as a stand-alone option or pre-treatment step for conventional desalination techniques without the application of external energy. MDCs have been used in multiple applications ranging from desalination, remediation of contaminated water, recovery of energy and nutrients from wastewater, softening of hardwater, biohydrogen production to degradation of waste engine oil. Although, MDCs have been used for multiple applications, still a number of operational challenges have been reported viz., interference of co-existing ions during desalination, membrane fouling, pH imbalance and limited potential of exoelectrogens. However, the re-circulation of anolytes with electrodialysis chamber has led to the maintenance of optimal pH for favourable microbial growth leading to improvement in the overall performance of MDCs. In future, genetic engineering may be used for improving the electrogenic activity of microbial community, next generation materials may be used as anode and cathode, varied sources of wastewater may be explored as anolytes, life cycle analysis and exergy analysis may be carried out to study the impact on environment and detailed pilot scale studies have to be carried out for assessing the feasibility of operation at large scale.

RESUMO

Industrial wastewater treatment is of paramount importance considering the safety of the aquatic ecosystem and its associated health risk to humankind inhabiting near the water bodies. Microalgae-based technologies for remediation of environmental pollutants present avenues for bioenergy applications and production of value-added biochemicals having pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, antioxidants, carbohydrate, phenolics, long-chain multi-faceted fatty acids, enzymes, and proteins which are considered healthy supplements for human health. Such a wide range of products put up a good case for the biorefinery concept. Microalgae play a pivotal role in degrading complex pollutants, such as organic and inorganic contaminants thereby efficiently removing them from the environment. In addition, microalgal species, such as Botryococcus braunii, Tetraselmis suecica, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Neochloris oleoabundans, Chlorella vulgaris, Arthrospira, Chlorella, and Tetraselmis sp., etc., are also reported for generation of value-added products. This review presents a holistic view of microalgae based biorefinery starting from cultivation and harvesting of microalgae, the potential for remediation of environmental pollutants, bioenergy application, and production of value-added biomolecules. Further, it summarizes the current understanding of microalgae-based technologies and discusses the risks involved, potential for bioeconomy, and outlines future research directions.

RESUMO

Pancreatic cancer is a highly aggressive malignant disease having very limited therapeutic options that ultimately results in its poor prognosis. It is still elusive on the etiology and tumorigenic mechanisms of pancreatic cancer. In the present report, we provide evidence showing involvement of the mineral dust-induced gene (mdig) in the pathogenesis and prognosis of the pancreatic cancer. Using immunohistochemistry approach on human pancreatic cancer tissue microarray, we found differential expression of mdig in pancreatic adenocarcinoma and normal pancreas. Based on the staining intensities of mdig in these tissue samples, we found that 12% of the cancer tissues were strongly positive for mdig, 39% and 31% were moderately and weakly positive respectively. Several alternatively spliced mdig mRNAs were detected in the selected pancreatic cancer cell lines. Through R2 platform for the patient survival analysis (http://r2.amc.nl), we found that enrichment of some specific exon of mdig predicates different survival rate of the pancreatic cancer patients. In summary, our findings may help in assessing the role of mdig in the pathogenesis of the pancreatic cancer and the prognosis of the pancreatic cancer patients.

RESUMO

Rapid urbanization and industrialization have accelerated the energy demand which cannot be met by decreasing fossil fuels thereby substantiate the need for lignocellulosic ethanol. The present study is one such attempt towards bioethanol production in an eco-friendly manner using enzymes in which a mixture of lignocellulosic biomass namely, Ricinus communis, Saccharum officinarum (tops) and Saccharum spontaneum were taken as a substrate. The mixed biomass was processed through partially consolidated bioprocessing (PCBP) approach which involves a non-isothermal simultaneous pretreatment and saccharification step where a concoction of laccase (Pleurotus djamor) and holocellulase (Trichoderma reseei RUT C30) was used followed by co-fermentation within the same reactor. The process parameters influencing PCBP were optimized using feed-forward ANN model which resulted in a maximum ethanol concentration of 7.86% (v/v) (62.01g/L) at pentose to hexose strain ratio of 0.696 (v/v), substrate loading of 27.54% (w/v) and incubation time of 21.96h.

RESUMO

Proteasome inhibitors have potential for the treatment of cervical cancer. We describe the synthesis and biological characterization of a new series of 1,3-diphenylpropen-1-one (chalcone) based derivatives lacking the boronic acid moieties of the previously reported chalcone-based proteasome inhibitor 3,5-bis(4-boronic acid benzylidene)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one and bearing a variety of amino acid substitutions on the amino group of the 4-piperidone. Our lead compound 2 (RA-1) inhibits proteasomal activity and has improved dose-dependent antiproliferative and proapoptotic properties in cervical cancer cells containing human papillomavirus. Further, it induces synergistic killing of cervical cancer cell lines when tested in combination with an FDA approved proteasome inhibitor. Exploration of the potential mechanism of proteasomal inhibition by our lead compound using in silico docking studies suggests that the carbonyl group of its oxopiperidine moiety is susceptible to nucleophilic attack by the γ-hydroxythreonine side chain within the catalytic sites of the proteasome.

RESUMO

A promising agent for use in prostate cancer therapy is the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway inhibitor, cyclopamine. This compound, however, has the potential for causing serious side effects in non-tumor tissues. To minimize these bystander toxicities, we have designed and synthesized two novel peptide-cyclopamine conjugates as prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-activated prodrugs for use against prostate cancer. These prodrugs were composed of cyclopamine coupled to one of two peptides (either HSSKLQ or SSKYQ) that can be selectively cleaved by PSA, converting the mature prodrug into an active Hedgehog inhibitor within the malignant cells. Of the two prodrugs, Mu-SSKYQ-Cyclopamine was rapidly hydrolyzed, with a half-life of 3.2h, upon incubation with the PSA enzyme. Thus, modulating cyclopamine at the secondary amine with PSA-cleavable peptides is a promising strategy for developing prodrugs to target prostate cancer.

RESUMO

Four novel water-soluble peptide-paclitaxel conjugates were designed and synthesized as prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-activated prodrugs for prostate cancer therapy. These prodrugs were composed of a peptide, HSSKLQ or SSKYQ, each of which is selectively cleavable by PSA; a self-immolative linker, either para-aminobenzyl alcohol (PABS) or ethylene diamine (EDA); and the parent drug, paclitaxel. Introduction of a PABA or EDA linker between the peptide and paclitaxel in prodrugs 2-5 resulted in products with an increased rate of hydrolysis by PSA. The stability of prodrugs 2 and 3, with the PABA linker, was poor in the serum-containing medium because of the weak carbonate bond between the PABA and paclitaxel; however, this disadvantage was overcome by introducing a carbamate bond using an EDA linker in prodrugs 4 and 5. Thus, the incorporation of an EDA linker increased both the stability and PSA-mediated activation of these prodrugs. The cytotoxicity of each prodrug, as compared to paclitaxel, was determined against a variety of cell lines, including the PSA-secreting CWR22Rv1 prostate cancer cell line. The EDA-derived prodrug of paclitaxel 5 was stable and capable of being efficiently converted to an active drug that killed cells specifically in the presence of PSA, suggesting that this prodrug and similarly designed PSA-cleavable prodrugs may have potential as prostate cancer-specific therapeutic agents.

RESUMO

Despite recent advances in our understanding of the biological processes leading to the development of cancer, there is still a need for new and effective agents to help bring this disease under control. One of the oldest and most effective strategies for developing new chemotherapeutics is the isolation and evaluation of chemicals of natural origin. The importance of natural products for drug discovery has been impressive: One has to only look at the number of clinically active drugs that are used in cancer therapy to see how many are either natural products or are based on natural products. It is also apparent that materials from natural sources are excellent probes (indicators) for cellular targets that, when modulated, may have a deleterious effect upon the survival or proliferation of tumor cells. And the search goes on. Sesquiterpenes are a class of naturally occurring molecules that have demonstrated therapeutic potential in decreasing the progression of cancer. These molecules are 15-carbon isoprenoid compounds that are typically found in plants and marine life. Although this class of compounds has frequently provided encouraging leads for chemotherapeutics, they have not been evaluated as potential anticancer agents. In this review, we provide a current overview of sesquiterpenoids that have potential as anticancer agents.
