RESUMO

Redox-active polymers have garnered significant attention as promising materials for redox capacitors, which are energy-storage devices that rely on reversible redox reactions to store and deliver electrical energy. Our focus was on optimizing the electrochemical performance in the design and synthesis of redox-active polymer electrodes. In this study, a redox-active polymer was prepared through step-by-step synthesis on a gold electrode. To achieve this, we designed an automatic sequential polymerization equipment that minimizes human intervention and enables a stepwise polymerization reaction. The electrochemical properties of the polymer gold electrodes were investigated. The degree of polymerization of the polymer grown on the gold electrode can be controlled by adjusting the cycle of the sequential operation. As the number of cycles increases, the amount of accumulated charge increases proportionally, indicating the potential for enhanced electrochemical performance.

OBJECTIVE: Gravity perception is an essential function for spatial orientation and postural stability; however, its assessment is not easy. We evaluated the head-tilt perception gain (HTPG, that is, mean perceptual gain [perceived/actual tilt angle] during left or right head roll-tilt conditions) and head-upright subjective visual vertical (SVV) using a simple method developed by us to investigate the characteristics of gravity perception in healthy participants. METHODS: We measured the SVV and head roll-tilt angle during head roll-tilt within ±30° of vertical in the sitting and standing positions while the participant maintained an upright trunk (sitting, 434 participants; standing, 263 participants). We evaluated the head-upright SVV, HTPG, and laterality of the HTPG. RESULTS: We determined the reference ranges of the absolute head-upright SVV (<2.5°), HTPG (0.80-1.25), and HTPG laterality (<10%) for the sitting position. The head-upright SVV and HTPG laterality were not influenced by sex or age. However, the HTPG was significantly greater in women than in men and in middle-aged (30-64 years) and elderly (65-88 years) participants than in young participants (18-29 years). The HTPG, but not the head-upright SVV or HTPG laterality, was significantly higher in the standing vs sitting position. CONCLUSION: The HTPG is a novel parameter of gravity perception involving functions of the peripheral otolith and neck somatosensory systems to the central nervous system. The HTPG in healthy participants is influenced by age and sex in the sitting position and immediately increases after standing to reinforce the righting reflex for unstable posture, which was not seen in the head-upright SVV, previously considered the only parameter. The emergence of zebrafish Danio rerio as a versatile model organism provides the unique opportunity to monitor the functions of glycosylation throughout vertebrate embryogenesis, providing insights into human diseases caused by glycosylation defects. Using a combination of chemical modifications, enzymatic digestion and mass spectrometry analyses, we establish here the precise glycomic profiles of eight individual zebrafish organs and demonstrate that the protein glycosylation and glycosphingolipid expression patterns exhibits exquisite specificity. Concomitant expression screening of a wide array of enzymes involved in the synthesis and transfer of sialic acids shows that the presence of organ-specific sialylation motifs correlates with the localized activity of the corresponding glycan biosynthesis pathways. These findings provide a basis for the rational design of zebrafish lines expressing desired glycosylation profiles.

Clinicians frequently encounter patients experiencing a floating sensation of unknown cause, referred to as floating dizziness. We developed a clinical examination to quantify gravity perception as a first step to test our hypothesis that a gravity perception disturbance causes floating dizziness. Our preliminary experiments revealed a linear relationship between head-tilt angle (HTA) and head-tilt perception (HTP) at a head roll tilt of <30°, with correlation coefficients of 0.991 and 0.999 between HTA and HTP in the whole body and head-tilt conditions, respectively. Using these observations, we established a method to evaluate the HTP gain (HTPG), which is the slope of a linear regression line produced by the relation of subjective visual vertical (SVV) with HTA during head tilt, as an index of gravity perception. We named this method head-tilt SVV (HT-SVV). When HTPG was>1, the subjects' HTP overestimated their HTA and vice versa. HT-SVV measurements of 329 healthy subjects gave an average and standard deviation (1.02±0.12) and reference value (0.80~1.25) for HTPG, a difference between left and right HTPG (4.7%±3.7%, <10.0%), and an absolute value for SVV in the upright head position (1.1°±0.8°, <2.5°). The next step is to make the HT-SVV system easier and faster to use as well as to collect more data from patients experiencing dizziness, including floating dizziness, to clarify the clinical significance of HT-SVV.
