This study evaluated the effect of dietary calcium (Ca) levels and deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination on Ca and phosphorus (P) utilization and bone mineralization in piglets. During an initial 13-d depletion phase, 64 piglets (15.7 ±â€…0.7 kg) received a control (DON-) or DON-contaminated treatment (DON+, 2.7 mg DON/kg) with either a low Ca (Ca-, 0.39%) or normal Ca level (Ca+, 0.65%) with a constant digestible P level (0.40%). A second group of 16 piglets received DON- or DON+ treatments for 9 d for gene expression analysis. During the subsequent 14-d repletion phase, all piglets were fed a Ca+ DON- diet containing 0.65% Ca and 0.35% digestible P without DON. After 5 d of the depletion phase, the absorption of P (DON × Ca; P < 0.05) and Ca was increased by the Ca- (P < 0.01) and DON+ (P < 0.01) diet. After 13 d, feed conversion ratio (P < 0.01) and average daily feed intake (P = 0.06) tended to decrease with the Ca- diet. The bone mineral content (BMC) gain was decreased by Ca, especially with Ca- DON + (DON × Ca, P < 0.05). The P absorption was increased by Ca- DON + (DON × Ca, P < 0.01), although the P retention efficiency was only increased by Ca+ DON + (DON × Ca, P < 0.001). The absorption of Ca was increased by DON+ (P < 0.001), and the Ca efficiency was increased by Ca- DON- (DON × Ca, P < 0.01). After 9 d, the gene expression of intestinal claudin 12 (P < 0.01) and CYP24A1 (P < 0.05), femur cortical RANKL (P < 0.05) and OPG (P = 0.06), and renal calbindin D9K (P < 0.05) and Klotho (P = 0.07) were decreased by DON+. The Ca (P = 0.06) and magnesium (P < 0.01) concentrations were decreased by DON+, and the Ca (P = 0.06) and P digestibility (P < 0.01) were increased. After the repletion phase, Ca- piglets recovered their BMC deficit, but not those receiving DON+ (DON × Ca; P = 0.06). The Ca (P < 0.05) and P (P = 0.06) retention efficiency tended to increase with Ca-. The absorption of Ca and P was increased by Ca- and DON+ (DON × Ca, P < 0.05). The results show that piglets increased their Ca and P utilization efficiency, allowing them to recover the BMC deficit caused by Ca-, but not when the piglets were exposed to DON. Pigs previously receiving Ca-deficient diet with DON still have lower body Ca and P, leading to elevated calcitriol concentrations and enhanced Ca and P intestinal absorption. The fact that DON decreased the expression of genes implicated in Ca intestinal and renal transport and P excretion after 9 d can potentially explain the reduced plasma Ca concentration.


Calcium (Ca) deficiency can increase how efficiently pigs use Ca and phosphorus (P), but exposure to the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON), often found in pig feed ingredients, can impact the digestibility and excretion of Ca and P. In our study, piglets received a diet with or without DON-contamination and either low Ca (0.39%) or normal Ca levels (0.65%) during a 13-d depletion phase, followed by a 14-d repletion phase where all piglets were fed a normal Ca diet without DON. The short Ca-depletion phase is known to improve the utilization efficiency of Ca and P in piglets by increasing the retention of these nutrients through both depletion and repletion phases and the Ca and P digestibility through the repletion phase, which allows recovery of the bone mineralization deficit that occurred during Ca deficiency. However, the diet contaminated with DON prevented pigs from recovering from their bone mineralization deficit observed during the Ca-depletion phase, even though they were better able to absorb and digest Ca and P during both phases. This was supported by the reduced expression of genes involved in Ca intestinal absorption, renal transport, osteoclastogenesis, and P excretion.

The carriage of Salmonella in pigs is a major concern for the agri-food industry and for global healthcare systems. Humans could develop salmonellosis when consuming contaminated pig products. On the other hand, some Salmonella serotypes could cause disease in swine, leading to economic losses on farms. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the anti-Salmonella activity of a novel Bacillus-based probiotic using a bioreactor containing a piglet-derived intestinal microbiota. Two methods of probiotic administration were tested: a single daily and a continuous dose. Salmonella enumeration was performed using selective agar at T24h, T48h, T72h, T96h and T120h. The DNA was extracted from bioreactor samples to perform microbiome profiling by targeted 16S rRNA gene sequencing on Illumina Miseq. The quantification of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was also assessed at T120h. The probiotic decreased Salmonella counts at T96 for the daily dose and at T120 for the continuous one. Both probiotic doses affected the alpha and beta diversity of the piglet-derived microbiota (p < 0.05). A decrease in acetate concentration and an increase in propionate proportion were observed in the continuous condition. In conclusion, the tested Bacillus-based product showed a potential to modulate microbiota and reduce Salmonella colonization in a piglet-derived intestinal microbiota and could therefore be used in vivo.

This study investigated the effect of reducing dietary crude protein (CP) content in the grower and finisher diets of broiler chickens on breast meat quality, muscle protein functionality, growth, carcass yield, and meat yield. To achieve this, a total of 1,269 one-day-old male Ross 308 chicks were fed 1 of 3 diets replicated 9 times each in a randomized complete block design with 9 blocks. The diets included a control (20.4% and 19.5% CP in the grower and finisher phase, respectively), a diet with a 1.5% reduction (CP-1.5%) and a diet with a 3.0% reduction (CP-3.0%) in CP content in both the grower and finisher phases. At the end of the experiment, the reduced-CP diets had no impact on body weight, feed intake, or feed conversion ratio. However, reduced-CP diet resulted in reduced (P < 0.001) total nitrogen intake (-7.46 and -11.94% in CP-1.5% and CP-3.0%, respectively). Breast meat quality was assessed (n = 36 birds/group), and the experimental diets were associated with a slightly increased (P = 0.07) ultimate pH (5.75, 5.79, and 5.81 for the control, CP-1.5%, and CP-3.0%, respectively). Breast fillets from the CP-1.5% and CP-3.0% groups had lower yellowness (b*, P < 0.001) and lower cooking loss (CL, P < 0.001) values than the control. Moreover, the solubility, emulsion activity, and stability indices of the sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar fractions of muscle proteins were not influenced by the diets. CP-1.5% and CP-3.0% diets were associated with an increased (P < 0.001) breast yield (18.39, 19.21, and 19.61% for the control, CP-1.5%, and CP-3.0%, respectively) while leg yield remained unchanged. Additionally, breast meat nutritional properties including protein and lipid contents were not impacted by the experimental diets. In conclusion, the CP content in the grower and finisher diets of broiler chickens can be reduced by as much as 3.0% without detrimental effects on performance or on meat quality as long as birds' amino acid requirements are adequately met.

An infection by protozoa Eimeria spp. can cause coccidiosis, which negatively affects broiler chicken performance and causes economic and production losses. To understand the effect of coccidiosis on broilers' performance, we evaluated the independent variables and their interactions on the severity of coccidiosis in broilers that cause variation (Δ) of average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and gain per feed (G:F) of broiler chicks using a meta-analysis approach. A database of 55 papers describing 63 experiments was gathered; broilers were challenged by Eimeria species (E. acervulina, E. maxima, E. tenella, and mixed) and at least 2 variables among ADFI, ADG, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were studied. The variation induced by the challenge was calculated relative to the control group of each experiment. The indirect factors evaluated were days postinfection (DPI), Eimeria type and dose, infection age (IA), bird's mean age in the analyzed period, genetic line, sex, and whether they were raised in a cage or a pen. Graphical, correlation, and variance analyses were performed to evaluate the form of the responses. Then, a linear plateau model was adjusted for each response variable as a function of DPI to determine the consequences of the disease on the variation of performance over time after infection. The impact of the infection challenge on the variation of performance vs. nonchallenge broilers was only impacted by DPI (P < 0.05). The adjustment of the data with the linear plateau model allows us to determine the host response to the coccidiosis disease at different stages. At 5 DPI (acute phase), ΔADFI, ΔADG, ΔG:F were of -19.0; -39.8, and -25.5, respectively. After almost 13 DPI birds achieved the recovery phase for all variables with Δ varying from -19 to -3.75% for ADFI, from -39.8 to -10.5% for ADG, and from -25.5 to -7.24% for G:F. The Eimeria impact was higher in ADG than ADFI in all periods due to Eimeria aggressive action form causing lesions in gut epithelial reducing the use of nutrients and energy. The results can be used as a quantitative approach to determine the consequences of Eimeria spp. on broiler performance.

When conducting a digestibility trial, pigs are usually fed only twice a day with a restricted feed intake which is not representative of the feeding conditions in a commercial farm. This study aimed to determine the effects of meal size and frequency, and exogenous enzymes (xylanase and phytase) on the digestibility of a high-fiber diet using porcine in vivo and in vitro approaches. Pigs (n = 6) were fitted with a T cannula, and each received all treatments using a 6 × 6 Latin square experimental design. The diets were supplemented (Enz) or not with a combination of xylanase and phytase and distributed into three feeding programs: one received two meals per day that met three times the maintenance energy requirement (2M), one received the same quantity of feed in eight meals (8M), and another received an amount that met five times the maintenance energy requirements in eight meals (8M+). For in vitro experiment, the degradability of fiber with or without xylanase supplementation only was determined. Enzyme supplementation increased apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of dry matter, starch, and degradation of insoluble non-starch polysaccharides (I-NSP) in all in vivo treatments (P < 0.05). The 2M compared with 8M increased the AID of starch and total tract digestibility of organic matter and I-NSP (P < 0.05). Enzyme supplementation decreased the content of insoluble arabinoxylan (P < 0.05) and increased arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (P < 0.05) in the in vivo ileal digesta and in vitro incubation. The results of this study confirm degradation by xylanase of the fiber fraction at the ileal level, which resulted in less fermentation of fiber in the large intestine. However, number and size of meals had little influence on feed digestibility. The consequences of shifting fiber fermentation more towards the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract need further investigation. The in vitro model provided a confirmation of the action of xylanase on the degradation of non-starch polysaccharides.


To reduce cost and also utilize locally produced ingredients, pig diets nowadays can include a large proportion of fiber-rich ingredients. Exogenous enzymes can be added to diets to improve their digestibility and limit negative effects of fiber. Usually, when conducting a digestibility trial, pigs are fed only twice a day with a restricted feed intake which is not representative of feeding conditions in a commercial farm. This study aimed to determine the effect of meal size and frequency, and enzyme supplementation on digestibility of a diet rich in fiber in growing pigs and in vitro. The diets were supplemented (Enz) or not with xylanase and phytase, and according to different size and frequency: one treatment was pig receiving two meals per day with five times the maintenance energy requirement (2M), another received the same quantity of feed in eight meals (8M), and the last received an amount close to ad libitum feeding in eight meals (8M+). An in vitro experiment was also conducted to look at degradability of fiber with and without xylanase. The results showed that xylanase allows degradation of fiber and increases digestibility of dry matter, starch, and energy. The number and size of meals have little influence on digestibility.

Variations in body composition among pigs can be associated with insulin sensitivity given the insulin anabolic effect. The study objectives were to characterize this association and to compare de novo lipogenesis and the gene expression in the adipose tissue of pigs of the same genetic background. Thirty 30-95 kg of body weight (BW) pigs, catheterized in the jugular vein participated into an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT; 1.75 g glucose/kg of BW) to calculate insulin-related indexes. The 8 fattest and the 8 leanest pigs were used to determine the relative mRNA abundance of studied genes. The rate of lipogenesis was assessed by incorporation of [U-13C]glucose into lipids. The QUICKI and Matsuda indexes negatively correlated with total body lipids (r = - 0.67 and r = - 0.59; P < 0.01) and de novo lipogenesis (r = - 0.58; P < 0.01). Fat pigs had a higher expression level of lipogenic enzymes (ACACA, ACLY; P < 0.05) than lean pigs. The reduced insulin sensitivity in fat pigs was associated with a higher expression level of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and a lower expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ). In conclusion, pigs with increased body lipids have lower insulin sensitivity which is associated with increased de novo lipogenesis.

Eimeria infections impair digestive tract capacity and barrier function leading to poor growth and feed efficiency. A meta-analysis approach was used to evaluate and quantify impact of Eimeria infection on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA) in broiler chickens. A database composed of 6 articles with a total of 21 experiments was built for the effect of challenge type (a mix of Eimeria spp. vs. E. acervulina) and subdatabase of 3 articles with a total of 15 experiments for the effect of E. acervulina dose response. Regression models were fitted with the mixed model procedure in Minitab 19 with fixed effects of challenge, species, and their interactions. For the sub database, the mixed model procedure was used to fit regression models and identify a linear or quadratic response to dose. Challenge decreased AID (P < 0.05) of both dispensable and indispensable AA except for Trp. Specifically, the largest depression was observed for Cys, Thr, Tyr, Ala, and Val with the magnitude of difference of 8.7, 5.4, 5.2, 5.1, and 4.9%, respectively for challenged vs. unchallenged birds. The type of challenge affected (P < 0.05) AID of AA with exception of Cys, Tyr, Ala, Ser, Leu, Asp, Gly, and Pro. E. acervulina challenge had larger negative effects on AID of Ile, Leu, and Val. Moreover, E. acervulina linearly decreased (P < 0.05) AID of all indispensable and dispensable AA except for Trp and quadratically (P < 0.05) decreased AID of all AA except Cys, Met, Arg, and Trp. The largest linear decrease due to E. acervulina dose was seen for AID of Cys, followed by Ala, Val, Thr, and Ile. Although, AID of Trp was not affected by E. acervulina challenge, mixed Eimeria species challenge decreased (P < 0.05) AID of Trp. Overall, the results confirmed that an Eimeria infection negatively impacted AA digestibility/utilization. The ranking of the most affected AA suggested ground for nutritional intervention during subclinical field Eimeria infections or vaccination programs.

This study aimed to measure protein deposition (PD) in pigs fed with daily tailored diets where either dietary lysine (Lys) or threonine (Thr) were provided at independent levels (ignoring an ideal ratio). A total of 95 growing pigs (35 kg body weight (BW)) with electronic ear tags granting them access to automatic feeders were randomly assigned to treatments. The setup was an unbalanced 2 × 5 factorial arrangement with Lys and Thr provided at five levels (i.e., 60%, 80%, 100%, 120%, and 140% of the estimated individual requirements of Lys and Thr), resulting in 25 treatments for 21 days. The observed PD variation to Lys and Thr provisions was large, with Lys and Thr intake explaining only 11% of the variation. Cluster analysis discriminated pigs with low (167 g/d, n = 16), medium (191 g/d, n = 38), and high (213 g/d, n = 37) PD, but with a similar amino acid intake. Differences in PD were associated with differences in nutrient efficiency of utilization. Providing Lys and Thr in a factorial mode, ignoring an ideal ratio, did not decrease the variability in PD. Future research efforts should focus on identifying and investigating the sources of interindividual variability-a necessary step before final recommendations can be made for AA in precision-fed pigs.

The sustainability of animal production relies on the judicious use of phosphorus (P). Phosphate, the mined source of agricultural phosphorus supplements, is a non-renewable resource, but phosphorus is essential for animal growth, health, and well-being. P must be provided by efficient and sustainable means that minimize the phosphorus footprint of livestock production by developing precise assessment of the bioavailability of dietary P using robust models. About 60% of the phosphorus in an animal's body occurs in bone at a fixed ratio with calcium (Ca) and the rest is found in muscle. The P and Ca requirements must be estimated together; they cannot be dissociated. While precise assessment of P and Ca requirements is important for animal well-being, it can also help to mitigate the environmental effects of pig farming. These strategies refer to multicriteria approaches of modeling, efficient use of the new generations of phytase, depletion and repletion strategies to prime the animal to be more efficient, and finally combining these strategies into a precision feeding model that provides daily tailored diets for individuals. The industry will need to use strategies such as these to ensure a sustainable plant-animal-soil system and an efficient P cycle.

Pig and poultry production systems have reached high-performance levels over the last few decades. However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to their environmental sustainability. This issue is even more relevant due to the growing demand for food demand since this surplus food production needs to be met at an affordable cost with minimum impact on the environment. This study presents a systematic review of peer-reviewed manuscripts that investigated the environmental impacts associated with pig and poultry production. For this purpose, independent reviews were performed and two databases were constructed, one for each production system. Previous studies published in peer-reviewed journals were considered for the databases if the method of life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied to pig (pork meat) or poultry (broiler meat or table eggs) production to estimate at least the potential effects of climate change, measured as CO2-eq. Studies considering the cradle-to-farm gate were considered, as well as those evaluating processes up to the slaughterhouse or processor gate. The pig database comprised 55 studies, while 30 publications were selected for the poultry database. These studies confirmed feeding (which includes the crop cultivation phase, manufacturing processes, and transportation) as the main contributor to the environmental impact associated with pig and poultry production systems. Several studies evaluated feeding strategies, which were indicated as viable alternatives to mitigate the environmental footprint associated with both production chains. In this study, precision feeding techniques are highlighted given their applicability to modern pig and poultry farming. These novel feeding strategies are good examples of innovative strategies needed to break paradigms, improve resource-use efficiency, and effectively move the current productive scenario toward more sustainable livestock systems.

Six assays were conducted to investigate male and female broiler responses to standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) and arginine (Arg). Response data were modeled to estimate the efficiency of utilization (k) of both amino acids and adjust factorial models to predict bird intake for SID Lys and SID Arg. In each assay, 1280 Cobb 500® broilers (640 male and 640 female) were randomly assigned to one of sixteen dietary treatments with four replicates of 20 birds. Dietary treatments consisted of crescent levels of SID Lys or SID Arg based on the dilution technique. The values of k determined for each phase (1- to 14-, 15- to 28-, and 29- to 42-d-old) and sex were contrasted using linear regression with groups (sex and phase). The estimated efficiencies were 0.79 for Lys and 0.62 for Arg, which were unaffected by phase or sex. Factorial models based on body weight and weight gain (M1) and on body and feather protein weight and deposition (M2) were applied to estimate the SID Lys and Arg intake for growth. The amino acid intake based on M2 had a lower error of prediction. Broiler chickens require 94.9 and 92.9 mg/d of SID Lys and SID Arg to deposit 1 g of body protein.

Little is still known about the environmental impacts of exogenous enzyme supplementation in pig and poultry feeding programs. Thus, this study aimed to assess the potential environmental impacts of producing feeds for pigs and broilers by simulating the effects of ß-mannanase Hemicell™ HT supplementation through energy savings during diet formulation. Life-cycle assessment standards were applied to simulate a cradle-to-feed mill gate scope. The functional units used were the production of 1 kg of the enzyme and 1 kg of feed at a feed mill gate located in Concórdia, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Climate change, eutrophication, and acidification were the chosen environmental impact categories. Energy savings through ß-mannanase supplementation were assessed by different metabolizable energy (ME) matrices (45 or 90 kcal of ME/kg of feed) during diet formulation in different grain production scenarios (Southern and/or Central-West origin). A total of 28 feeds were formulated based on the nutritional requirements and feeding programs described in the Brazilian Tables for Poultry and Swine. The least-cost formulation method was used based on real price averages practiced in a local industry over 12 months. The production of 1 kg of ß-mannanase was associated with the emission of 1,800 g of CO2-eq, 4.53 g of PO4-eq, and 7.89 g of SO2-eq. For pig feeds, ß-mannanase supplementation mitigated both climate change and eutrophication impacts up to 8.5 and 1.4% (45 kcal of ME/kg of feed) or up to 16.2 and 2.7% (90 kcal of ME/kg of feed) compared to control diets formulated without the enzyme. For broiler feeds, these impacts were mitigated up to 5.6 and 1.1% (45 kcal of ME/kg of feed), respectively. On the other hand, the effect of using ß-mannanase on the acidification impact was not consistent among feeds/species. Overall, ß-mannanase supplementation reduced the amount of soybean oil in feed formulas, which is associated with high environmental impacts. Consequently, the potential impacts of climate change and eutrophication associated with producing feeds for pigs and broilers were substantially mitigated. These results suggest that ß-mannanase supplementation is an eco-friendly feed strategy to reduce the environmental impacts of pig and poultry feeding programs.

Nutritional values of ingredients have been and still are the subject of many studies to reduce security margins of nutrients when formulating diets to reduce feed cost. In most studies, pigs are fed a limited amount of feed in a limited number of meals that do not represent how pigs are fed in commercial farm conditions. With free access to feed, pigs follow their intrinsic feeding behaviour. Feed intake is regulated by satiety and satiation signals. Reducing the feed intake level or feeding frequency can affect digestibility and transit time and induce metabolic changes. To reduce feed costs, alternative ingredients that are frequently rich in dietary fibre are added to diets. Fibre acts on the digestion process and transit time by decreasing energy density and causing viscosity. Various analyses of fibre can be realised, and the measured fibre fraction can vary. Exogenous enzymes can be added to counteract the effect of fibre, but digestive tract conditions, influenced by meal size and frequency, can affect the efficiency of supplemented enzymes. In conclusion, the frequency and size of the meals can affect the digestibility of nutrients by modulating gastrointestinal tract conditions (pH and transit time), metabolites (glucose and short-chain fatty acids) and hormones (glucagon-like peptide 1 and peptide tyrosine tyrosine).

The use of radioactive isotopes to measure de novo lipogenesis in pigs has been well established. Different from radioactive isotopes, stable isotopes present little or no risk to human and animal subjects. Therefore, the objective of this study was to adapt the method of bolus injection of radioactive glucose (14C) to use 13C-labeled glucose to estimate de novo lipogenesis in finishing pigs. Five vein-catheterized gilts received 3.0 kg/d of a commercial diet for 2 wk. On the last day, the pigs received a bolus injection of [U-13C]glucose (12 mg/kg body weight). A serial of blood samples was taken for 4 h to determine the glucose rate of disappearance (Rd) from plasma glucose isotopic enrichment (IE). The 13C IE of lipids was determined from adipose tissue biopsies collected at 1, 2, and 3 h after the bolus injection and from adipose tissue collected after pig euthanasia 4 h after the bolus. Lipogenesis was estimated from the incorporation of 13C from glucose into adipose tissue lipids. Glucose Rd, estimated using a double-exponential function, averaged 5.4 ± 1.4 mmol/min. The IE of lipids increased linearly during the 4 h following the bolus injection (P < 0.05). The rate of incorporation of glucose into lipids, estimating lipogenesis, averaged 9.0 µg glucose/(min × g of lipids) 4 h after the bolus injection. In conclusion, the in vivo method using a bolus injection of [U-13C]glucose allows a successful estimation of de novo lipogenesis in finishing pigs.

Emerging viral diseases include pathogens that can threaten the health of the Canadian swineherd. Anelloviruses and Circoviruses comprise of pathogens with veterinary significance. The aim of this study was to determine the genomic organization and phylogenetic relationships of Torque teno sus virus (TTsusV) and Porcine circovirus (PCV) from Canadian pig samples. Fecal and tissue specimens were collected during the winter, spring and summer of 2018. We utilized either virus- or genus-specific PCR assays to characterize the occurrence and genetic diversity of TTsusV and PCV in Canadian pigs. Pairwise comparison of all partial sequences and identity calculation was performed using MAFFT algorithm implemented in Sequence Demarcation Tool (SDT). The obtained full-length sequences were aligned using ClustalW, and phylogeny was inferred using a Maximum likelihood (ML) method by Geneious software. The PCR detection results revealed that the overall positive rate of TTsusV type-1 and type-2 was 45.6% and 32.6%, respectively. The TTsusV isolate MK990454 from Canada clustered in the subtype TTsusV1b, while the TTsusV isolate MK872392 fell in the subtype TTsusV2c, and all showed similarity to known American and Chinese isolates. In addition, our screening PCR showed that 2.7% of stool samples were positive for PCV1. Phylogenetic analysis using the full-length sequence demonstrated that PCV1 (MK872393) isolated from Quebec clustered with other Chinese PCV1 strains. Despite the far geographical distance between Canada and China, the close similarity between Canadian and Chinese TTsusV1 and 2, and PCV1 sequences may be explained by a considerable amount of pig trade between these two nations.

Clostridium perfringens, a commensal of the intestinal tract of many animal species, has been associated with necrotic enteritis (NE), an economically significant poultry disease. Clostridium perfringens is known to survive in the environment for extended periods of time through the formation of spores. These spores have the potential to be transmitted to subsequent flocks. Persistence of a single C. perfringens strain in a broiler chicken farm environment has, however, been poorly documented. The aim of this study was to compare multiple isolates of C. perfringens collected over time in a single farm with recurrent episodes of NE. Isolates were recovered from the intestines of chickens affected with NE (2014 and 2016 outbreaks) and from healthy chickens (2017), as well as from environmental samples (2016). PCR characterization of those isolates showed that all sampling groups contained netB-positive isolates except for the environmental samples. Moreover, results showed that all environmental isolates were positive for the cna adhesin whereas other groups had lower numbers of cna-positive isolates. Biofilm formation assays showed that most of the isolates were able to form biofilm. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis showed that one clone was present in every sampling group, with the exception of the 2014 outbreak. However, one clone found in the latter group was highly similar, having 94% similarity with the persistent C. perfringens clone. This study describes for the first time the persistence of a C. perfringens strain on a broiler chicken house over a 3-yr period.

Feeding behavior is an important aspect of pig husbandry as it can affect protein deposition (PD) in pigs. A decrease in plasma threonine (Thr) levels may influence feed intake (FI) due to amino acid imbalance. We set out to study whether different Thr inclusion rates of 70%, 85%, 100%, 115%, and 130% of the ideal Thr:lysine (Lys) ratio of 0.65 in two different feeding programs (individual precision feeding and group-phase feeding could affect pig feeding behavior and consequently PD. Two 21-d trials were performed in a 2 × 5 factorial setup (feeding systems × Thr levels) with 110 pigs in the growing phase [25.0 ± 0.8 kg of body weight (BW)] and 110 pigs in the finishing phase (110.0 ± 7.0 kg BW), which correspond to 11 pigs per treatment in each trial. Pigs were housed in the same room and fed using computerized feeding stations. The total lean content was estimated by dual x-ray absorptiometry at the beginning (day 1) and the end (day 21) of the trial. Multivariate exploratory factor analysis was performed to identify related variables. Confirmatory analysis was performed by orthogonal contrasts and Pearson correlation analysis. Graphical analysis showed no difference in feeding patterns between feeding systems during the growing or finishing phase. Pigs exhibited a predominant diurnal feeding, with most meals (73% on average) consumed between 0600 and 1800 h. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that feeding behavior was not related to growth performance or PD in growing or finishing pigs. Changes in feeding behavior were observed during the growing phase, where increasing dietary Thr resulted in a linear increase in the FI rate (P < 0.05). During the finishing phase, the duration of the meal and FI rate increased linearly as dietary Thr increased in the diet (P < 0.05). These changes in feeding behavior are, however, correlated to BW. In conclusion, the exploratory factor analysis indicated that feeding behavior had no correlation with growth performance or protein and lipid deposition in growing or finishing pigs. Dietary Thr levels and feeding systems had no direct effect on FI.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin synthesised by the Fusarium, is known to affect the growth of pigs. This effect can be attenuated with sodium meta-bisulphite (SBS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of SBS with antioxidant blend on nutrient digestibility in pigs fed a diet contaminated naturally with DON. Six crossbred castrated pigs fitted surgically with single-T cannulas in the distal ileum received one of four barley-corn-soybean diets with or without SBS. After 8 d of feeding, faeces and ileal digesta were collected for 2 d. Apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of the dry matter (DM), energy, nutrients and DON, and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of DM, acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), energy and DON were evaluated. The AID of phosphorus, calcium and some amino acids was increased (p < 0.05) in the DON diets whereas the ATTD of DM and energy tended to decrease (p = 0.064 and p = 0.071). SBS reduced the AID of DM, energy, ADF, ether extract, phosphorus and DON (p < 0.05) but had no effect on the ATTD of DM, energy, fibre or DON. These results show that DON improved the AID of some nutrients but tended to reduce the ATTD of energy, which could explain, although anorexia is the main effect of DON on live weight gain, the reported negative effect of DON on pig growth. Finally, SBS with antioxidant blend had reduced AID of some nutrients and intestinal absorption of DON.

BACKGROUND: There is large variation in amino acids requirements among pigs, hence feeding pigs individually with daily tailored diets or in groups with a single feed may require different levels of nutrients. Thus, the response to different threonine levels (70%, 85%, 100%, 115%, and 130% of the ideal threonine:lysine protein ratio of 0.65) was studied in growing pigs raised in a conventional group phase-feeding (GPF) system or fed individually using individual precision-feeding (IPF) techniques. In a 21-day trial, 110 barrows (25 ± 0.80 kg body weight) were housed in the same room and fed using electronic feeders. Five pigs per treatment were slaughtered at the end of the trial. RESULTS: Threonine intake increased linearly for the IPF and GPF pigs (P < 0.05). Lysine intake was similar across the treatments. Average daily gain, gain:feed ratio, and protein deposition were affected linearly by threonine level (P < 0.05) in both feeding systems. Protein deposition in the GPF pigs was maximized at 150 g/d and a 0.65 threonine:lysine ratio, whereas protein deposition increased linearly in the IPF pigs. Plasma Met and serine levels were 11 and 7% higher, respectively, in the IPF pigs than in the GPF pigs (P < 0.05). Dietary threonine increased (P < 0.05) threonine concentration in the longissimus dorsi in a quadratic manner in the IPF pigs, whereas there was no effect in the GPF pigs. Longissimus dorsi collagen decreased as dietary threonine increased in the IPF and GPF pigs (P < 0.10). Carcass muscle crude protein was 2% higher in the GPF pigs than in the IPF pigs (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Individual pigs are able to modulate growth and the composition of growth according to threonine intake. The average amino acid ratio value that is currently used for GPF cannot be used for IPF.
