There is a marked difference between males and females in sprint running performance, yet a comprehensive investigation of sex differences in the muscle morphology of sprinters remains to completed. This study compared muscle volumes of 23 individual leg muscles/compartments and five functional muscle groups, assessed with 3T magnetic resonance imaging, between male (n=31) and female (n=22) sprinters, and sub-groups of elite males (EM, n=5), elite females (EF, n=5), and performance matched (to elite females) males (PMMEF, n=6). Differences in muscle volume distribution between EM, EF and unathletic male controls (UM) were also assessed. For the full sprint cohorts, males were more muscular than females, but the differences were non-uniform and anatomically variable, with the largest differences in the hip extensors and flexors. However, amongst elite sprinters the sex differences in the volume of the functional muscle groups were almost uniform (absolute volume +47-53%), and the muscle volume distribution of EM was more similar to EF than UM (P<0.039). For PMMEF relative hip extensor volume, but not stature or percent body fat, differentiated for performance (PMMEF and EF < EM) rather than sex. In conclusion, whilst the full cohorts of sprinters showed a marked sex difference in the amount and distribution of muscle mass, elite sprinters appeared to be selected for a common muscle distribution phenotype that for these elite sub-groups was a stronger effect than that of sex. Relative hip extensor muscle volume appeared to be the primary determinant of the sex difference in performance.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a well-used technique to assess muscle size and can be acquired on different planes. Pectoralis major (PM) and triceps brachii (TB) muscles are often acquired and analyzed on the axial plane, however it is unknown if anatomical cross-sectional area (CSA) calculated from different planes will affect the muscle size-strength relationship. Thus, the first aim of the present study was to identify if the CSA of the PM and TB measured on different planes presents a similar muscle size-strength relationship. A secondary aim was to investigate if the quantification of CSA of the PM and TB muscles are similar between sagittal and axial plane. METHODS: Fifteen males underwent an MRI examination, and after that, one-repetition maximum (1RM) test was performed. RESULTS: There was a significant relationship between 1RM and PM CSA measured on the axial and sagittal plane (r≤0.81), while the relationship with TB CSA was only good on the axial plane (r=0.65) and not significant on the sagittal plane (r=0.27). ICC between planes was excellent for PM CSA (0.96) with Bland-Altman procedure showing agreement between planes (d=0.376; P=0.612). Contrarily, TB CSA ICC was week (0.07), with Bland-Altman procedure showing no agreement between planes (d=-24.49; P=0.022). CONCLUSIONS: CSA measured at axial plane from PM and TB muscles showed a significant relationship with 1RM, while only PM CSA on the sagittal plane showed a significant relationship with 1RM. Finally, it was demonstrated that PM images showed a great reliability between planes, which was not true for TB muscle.

Because of the biophysical relation between muscle fibre diameter and the propagation velocity of action potentials along the muscle fibres, motor unit conduction velocity could be a non-invasive index of muscle fibre size in humans. However, the relation between motor unit conduction velocity and fibre size has been only assessed indirectly in animal models and in human patients with invasive intramuscular EMG recordings, or it has been mathematically derived from computer simulations. By combining advanced non-invasive techniques to record motor unit activity in vivo, i.e. high-density surface EMG, with the gold standard technique for muscle tissue sampling, i.e. muscle biopsy, here we investigated the relation between the conduction velocity of populations of motor units identified from the biceps brachii muscle, and muscle fibre diameter. We demonstrate the possibility of predicting muscle fibre diameter (R2  = 0.66) and cross-sectional area (R2  = 0.65) from conduction velocity estimates with low systematic bias (∼2% and ∼4% respectively) and a relatively low margin of individual error (∼8% and ∼16%, respectively). The proposed neuromuscular interface opens new perspectives in the use of high-density EMG as a non-invasive tool to estimate muscle fibre size without the need of surgical biopsy sampling. The non-invasive nature of high-density surface EMG for the assessment of muscle fibre size may be useful in studies monitoring child development, ageing, space and exercise physiology, although the applicability and validity of the proposed methodology need to be more directly assessed in these specific populations by future studies. Our results confirmed that motor unit conduction velocity can be considered as a novel biomarker of fibre size, which can be adopted to predict muscle fibre diameter and cross-sectional area with low systematic bias and margin of individual error. The proposed neuromuscular interface opens new perspectives in the use of high-density EMG as a non-invasive tool to estimate muscle fibre size without the need of surgical biopsy sampling.

J Strength Cond Res 37(2): 284-290, 2023-Muscle power, defined as the ability of the muscle to produce torque quickly, has received little attention and may be critical for understanding physical function and performance. Hip abductors' capacity to produce power through both torque and velocity is important for different human activities; hence, a reliable assessment of hip abduction is critical. The first aim of the study was to assess the intersession reliability of hip abductor muscles maximal torque and submaximal power and power during standing hip abduction in young adults using pneumatic resistance. A secondary aim was to investigate whether there was a relationship between hip abductor maximal torque and submaximal power and velocity with clinical assessments of strength and power in young adults. The subjects (n = 24; 26.0 ± 3.7 years) visited the laboratory 2 times. In the first visit, the subjects performed on a pneumatic resistance machine 1-repetition maximum (1RM) and submaximal tests (40, 60, and 70% of 1RM) of the hip abductors and clinical tests of lower-extremity strength and power (The 30-second chair stand test [30CST]; and stair climb power test). During the second visit, all tests were repeated except the clinical tests. One-repetition maximum torque and submaximal power and velocity (at all levels) had excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.943) with absolute reliability of 13.5% up to 28.3%. The agreement between days from Bland-Altman plots for power and velocity was near 0 for all levels. Hip abduction velocity had a significant positive correlation with 30CST at 60% (r = 0.416; p = 0.048) and 70% of 1RM (r = 0.442; p = 0.035). In conclusion, we showed an excellent intersession reliability of the hip abductor muscles 1RM torque and submaximal power and velocity using pneumatic resistance. Furthermore, we demonstrated that hip abduction velocity might be important for the performance of the 30CST.

The first aim was to investigate the impact of different electromyography (EMG) parameters as a reference to normalize the EMG amplitude of the superficial quadriceps femoris muscles across different sets of a knee extension exercise. The second aim is to examine the reliability between days of the EMG parameters used as a reference. Eleven young males attended the laboratory on 4 different days and performed one repetition maximum test, maximumvoluntary isometric contractions, and a resistance training protocol until failure. Surface EMG was placed over the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis muscles. Seven EMG parameters were calculated from the tasks and used to normalize EMG amplitude measured during the resistance training protocol. A repeated-measures two-way ANOVA was used (normalized EMG amplitude × set) to compare normalized EMG across sets, while an intraclass correlation coefficient, coefficient of variation, and Bland-Altman plots were used to calculate the intra-day reliability of the EMG parameters. The present investigation showed that normalized EMG amplitude of the superficial muscles of the quadriceps measured during a knee extension exercise is influenced by the EMG parameter and depends on the muscle. While rectus femoris and vastus lateralis normalized EMG amplitude presented one parameter among seven showing similar value to the other parameters, VM showed two. Lastly, all EMG parameters for all muscles presented an overall excellent reliability and agreement between days.

INTRODUCTION: A paucity of research exists examining the importance of muscle morphological and functional characteristics for elite female sprint performance. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare lower body muscle volumes and vertical jumping power between elite and subelite female sprinters and assess the relationships of these characteristics with sprint race and acceleration performance. METHODS: Five elite (100 m seasons best [SBE 100 ], 11.16 ± 0.06 s) and 17 subelite (SBE 100 , 11.84 ± 0.42 s) female sprinters underwent: 3T magnetic resonance imaging to determine the volume of 23 individual leg muscles/compartments and five functional muscle groups; countermovement jump and 30 m acceleration tests. RESULTS: Total absolute lower body muscle volume was higher in elite versus subelite sprinters (+15%). Elite females exhibited greater muscle volume of the hip flexors (absolute, +28%; relative [to body mass], +19%), hip extensors (absolute, +22%; relative, +14%), and knee extensors (absolute, +21%), demonstrating pronounced anatomically specific muscularity, with relative hip flexor volume alone explaining 48% of sprint performance variability. The relative volume of five individual muscles (sartorius, gluteus maximus, adductor magnus, vastus lateralis, illiopsoas) were both distinct between groups (elite > subelite) and related to SBE 100 ( r = 0.553-0.639), with the combination of the sartorius (41%) and the adductor magnus (17%) explaining 58% of the variance in SBE 100 . Elite female sprinters demonstrated greater absolute countermovement jump power versus subelite, and absolute and relative power were related to both SBE 100 ( r = -0.520 to -0.741) and acceleration performance ( r = 0.569 to 0.808). CONCLUSIONS: This investigation illustrates the distinctive, anatomically specific muscle volume distribution that facilitates elite sprint running in females, and emphasizes the importance of hip flexor and extensor relative muscle volume.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare explosive strength and underpinning contractile, hypertrophic, and neuromuscular activation characteristics of long-term maximum strength-trained (LT-MST; ie, ≥3 years of consistent, regular knee extensor training) and untrained individuals. Sixty-three healthy young men (untrained [UNT] n = 49, and LT-MST n = 14) performed isometric maximum and explosive voluntary, as well as evoked octet knee extension contractions. Torque, quadriceps, and hamstring surface EMG were recorded during all tasks. Quadriceps anatomical cross-sectional area (QACSAMAX ; via MRI) was also assessed. Maximum voluntary torque (MVT; +66%) and QACSAMAX (+54%) were greater for LT-MST than UNT ([both] p < 0.001). Absolute explosive voluntary torque (25-150 ms after torque onset; +41 to +64%; [all] p < 0.001; 1.15≤ effect size [ES]≤2.36) and absolute evoked octet torque (50 ms after torque onset; +43, p < 0.001; ES = 3.07) were greater for LT-MST than UNT. However, relative (to MVT) explosive voluntary torque was lower for LT-MST than UNT from 100 to 150 ms after contraction onset (-11% to -16%; 0.001 ≤ p ≤ 0.002; 0.98 ≤ ES ≤ 1.11). Relative evoked octet torque 50 ms after onset was lower (-10%; p < 0.001; ES = 1.14) and octet time to peak torque longer (+8%; p = 0.001; ES = 1.18) for LT-MST than UNT indicating slower contractile properties, independent from any differences in torque amplitude. The greater absolute explosive strength of the LT-MST group was attributable to higher evoked explosive strength, that in turn appeared to be due to larger quadriceps muscle size, rather than any differences in neuromuscular activation. In contrast, the inferior relative explosive strength of LT-MST appeared to be underpinned by slower intrinsic/evoked contractile properties.

Muscle volume (MV) and anatomical cross-sectional area (CSA) are used as measures of muscle-size, but determining these from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a very time-consuming process. Additionally, it is unclear if the use of different muscle size assessments (all vs. reduced number of slices images) would impact the muscle size-strength relationship. Thus, this study aimed to investigate if muscle size calculation by using a reduced or all slices images from pectoralis major (PM) would maintain a similar muscle size-strength relationship with bilateral maximal dynamic and isometric contractions on a bench press exercise. Twenty-four healthy males underwent an MRI examination to measure PM muscle size, and maximal isometric and dynamic contractions (by one repetition maximum, 1RM) were performed. Correlations between maximal isometric voluntary force (MVF) and dynamic strength (1RM) with muscle size variables [three images from the largest part of PM (CSA3MAX), three images accounting for the shape -first image, middle image, final image- of the PM (CSA3), and MV] were performed. The correlation between 1RM with MV, CSA3, and CSA3MAX were 0.84, 0.832, and 0.727 (p < 0.001), respectively. The correlation between MVF with MV, CSA3, and CSA3MAX were 0.738, 0.733, and 0.604 (p < 0.001), respectively. Overall, PM MV and CSA3 exhibit a stronger and similar muscle size-strength relationship during maximal dynamic and isometric tests than CSA3MAX. Therefore, a reduced number of slices (CSA3) could be used as an alternative to considerably reduce the time of analysis without compromise muscle size-strength relationship.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to identify the associations of the hip abductor muscle strength, structure, and neuromuscular activation on balance and mobility in younger, middle-aged, and older adults. DATA SOURCES: We followed PRISMA guidelines and performed searches in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database. STUDY SELECTION: Study selection included: (1) studies with patients aged 18 years or older and (2) studies that measured hip abduction torque, surface electromyography, and/or muscle structure and compared these measures with balance or mobility outcomes. DATA EXTRACTION: The extracted data included the study population, setting, sample size, sex, and measurement evaluated. DATA SYNTHESIS: The present systematic review is composed of 59 research articles including a total of 2144 young, middle-aged, and older adults (1337 women). We found that hip abductor strength is critical for balance and mobility function, independent of age. Hip abductor neuromuscular activation is also important for balance and mobility, although it may differ across ages depending on the task. Finally, the amount of fat inside the muscle appears to be one of the important factors of muscle structure influencing balance. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, a change in all investigated variables (hip abduction torque, neuromuscular activation, and intramuscular fat) appears to have an effect during balance or mobility tasks across age ranges and may elicit better performance. Future studies are necessary to confirm the effect of these variables across age ranges and the effects of interventions.

This study investigated the impact of performing two equalized resistance training (RT) protocols for 10 weeks that differ only by repetition duration and number in the force-position and EMG-position relationship. Participants performed an equalized (36 s of time under tension; 3-4 sets; 3 min between sets; 50-55% of one-repetition maximum; 3× week) RT intervention on the bench press and the only different change between protocols was repetition number (RN; 12 vs.6) or duration (RD; 3 s vs. 6 s). Two experimental groups (RN12RD3, n = 12; and RN6RD6, n = 12) performed the RT, while one group was the control (Control, n = 11). Maximal isometric contractions at 10%, 50% and 90% of total bench press range of motion were performed pre- and post-RT, while electromyography was recorded. It demonstrated an increase in isometric force (+14% to 24%, P < 0.001) shifting up the force-position relationship of the training groups after RT, although no difference was between training groups compared to the Control. Neuromuscular activation from pectoralis major presented an increase after training for both RT groups (+44%; P < 0.001) compared to the Control. However, although not significantly different, triceps brachii also presented an increase depending on the protocol (+25%). In conclusion, 10 weeks of an equalized RT with longer RN and shorter RD (or opposite) similarly increases the ability to produce maximal isometric force during the bench exercise across different angles, while neuromuscular activation of the pectoralis major partially explained the shift-up of the force-position relationship after training.

Equalization of training protocols by time under tension determines the magnitude of changes in strength and muscular hypertrophy. J Strength Cond Res 36(7): 1770-1780, 2022-The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 2 training protocols equalized by tension (TUT) on maximal strength (1 repetition maximum [RM]), regional cross-sectional areas (proximal, middle, and distal), and total cross-sectional areas (sum of the regional cross-sectional areas) of the pectoralis major and triceps brachii muscles. Thirty-eight men untrained in resistance training participated in the study and were allocated under 3 conditions: Protocol 3s (n = 11; 12 repetitions; 3s repetition duration), Protocol 6s (n = 11; 6 repetitions; 6s repetition duration), and Control (n = 11; no training). Training protocols (10 weeks; bench press exercise) were equated for TUT (36 seconds per set), number of sets (3-4), intensity (50-55% of 1RM), and rest between sets (3 minutes). Analysis of variance was used to examine a percentage change in variables of interest across the 3 groups with an alpha level of 0.05 used to establish statistical significance. Protocols 3s and 6s showed no differences in the increase of total and regional muscle cross-sectional areas. There were no differences in regional hypertrophy of the pectoralis major muscle. In the triceps brachii muscle, the increase in distal cross-sectional area was greater when compared with the middle and proximal regions. Both experimental groups had similar increases in the 1RM test. In conclusion, training protocols with the same TUT promote similar strength gains and muscle hypertrophy. Moreover, considering that the protocols used different numbers of repetitions, the results indicate that training volumes cannot be considered separately from TUT when evaluating neuromuscular adaptations.

This study compared elbow flexor (EF; experiment 1) and knee extensor (KE; experiment 2) maximal compound action potential (Mmax) amplitude between long-term resistance trained (LTRT; n = 15 and n = 14, 6 ± 3 and 4 ± 1 yr of training) and untrained (UT; n = 14 and n = 49) men, and examined the effect of normalizing electromyography (EMG) during maximal voluntary torque (MVT) production to Mmax amplitude on differences between LTRT and UT. EMG was recorded from multiple sites and muscles of EF and KE, Mmax was evoked with percutaneous nerve stimulation, and muscle size was assessed with ultrasonography (thickness, EF) and magnetic resonance imaging (cross-sectional area, KE). Muscle-electrode distance (MED) was measured to account for the effect of adipose tissue on EMG and Mmax. LTRT displayed greater MVT (+66%-71%, P < 0.001), muscle size (+54%-56%, P < 0.001), and Mmax amplitudes (+29%-60%, P ≤ 0.010) even when corrected for MED (P ≤ 0.045). Mmax was associated with the size of both muscle groups (r ≥ 0.466, P ≤ 0.011). Compared with UT, LTRT had higher absolute voluntary EMG amplitude for the KE (P < 0.001), but not the EF (P = 0.195), and these differences/similarities were maintained after correction for MED; however, Mmax normalization resulted in no differences between LTRT and UT for any muscle and/or muscle group (P ≥ 0.652). The positive association between Mmax and muscle size, and no differences when accounting for peripheral electrophysiological properties (EMG/Mmax), indicates the greater absolute voluntary EMG amplitude of LTRT might be confounded by muscle morphology, rather than providing a discrete measure of central neural activity. This study therefore suggests limited agonist neural adaptation after LTRT.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In a large sample of long-term resistance-trained individuals, we showed greater maximal M-wave amplitude of the elbow flexors and knee extensors compared with untrained individuals, which appears to be at least partially mediated by differences in muscle size. The lack of group differences in voluntary EMG amplitude when normalized to maximal M-wave suggests that differences in muscle morphology might impair interpretation of voluntary EMG as an index of central neural activity.

It is poorly understood how the central nervous system adapts to resistance training, especially after years of exposure. We compared corticospinal excitability and motor representation assessed with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) between long-term resistance trained (LRT, ≥3 years) versus untrained (UNT) males (n = 15/group). Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) were obtained from the biceps brachii during isometric elbow flexion. Stimulus-response curves were created at the hotspot during 10% maximum voluntary torque (MVT) contractions. Maximum peak-to-peak MEP amplitude (MEPmax) was acquired with 100% stimulator output intensity, whilst 25%-100% MVT was produced. Maps were created during 10% MVT contractions, with an individualised TMS intensity eliciting 20% MEPmax at the hotspot. LRT had a 48% lower stimulus-response curve slope than UNT (p < .05). LRT also had a 66% larger absolute map size, although TMS intensity used for mapping was greater in LRT versus UNT (48% vs. 26% above active motor threshold) to achieve a target 20% MEPmax at the hotspot, due to the lower slope of LRT. Map size was strongly correlated with the TMS intensity used for mapping (r = 0.776, p < .001). Once map size was normalised to TMS intensity, there was no difference between the groups (p = .683). We conclude that LRT had a lower stimulus-response curve slope/excitability, suggesting higher neural efficiency. TMS map size was overwhelmingly determined by TMS intensity, even when the MEP response at the hotspot was matched among individuals, likely due to larger current spread with higher intensities. Motor representation appears similar between LRT and UNT given no difference in the normalised map size.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the differences in muscle volumes and strength between male elite sprinters, sub-elite sprinters, and untrained controls and to assess the relationships of muscle volumes and strength with sprint performance. METHODS: Five elite sprinters (100-m season's best equivalent [SBE100], 10.10 ± 0.07 s), 26 sub-elite sprinters (SBE100, 10.80 ± 0.30 s), and 11 untrained control participants underwent 1) 3-T magnetic resonance imaging scans to determine the volume of 23 individual lower limb muscles/compartments and 5 functional muscle groups and 2) isometric strength assessment of lower body muscle groups. RESULTS: Total lower body muscularity was distinct between the groups (controls < sub-elite +20% < elite +48%). The hip extensors exhibited the largest muscle group differences/relationships (elite, +32% absolute and +15% relative [per kg] volume, vs sub-elite explaining 31%-48% of the variability in SBE100), whereas the plantarflexors showed no differences between sprint groups. Individual muscle differences showed pronounced anatomical specificity (elite vs sub-elite absolute volume range, +57% to -9%). Three hip muscles were consistently larger in elite vs sub-elite (tensor fasciae latae, sartorius, and gluteus maximus; absolute, +45%-57%; relative volume, +25%-37%), and gluteus maximus volume alone explained 34%-44% of the variance in SBE100. The isometric strength of several muscle groups was greater in both sprint groups than controls but similar for the sprint groups and not related to SBE100. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate the pronounced inhomogeneity and anatomically specific muscularity required for fast sprinting and provides novel, robust evidence that greater hip extensor and gluteus maximus volumes discriminate between elite and sub-elite sprinters and are strongly associated with sprinting performance.

The amount of tissue between the muscle and surface electromyography (sEMG) electrode influences the sEMG signals. Increased intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) of the hip abductor muscles negatively impacts balance in older individuals, but it is unknown if this is related to the ability to activate the muscles. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the influence of gluteus medius (GM) IMAT on sEMG amplitude during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) of the hip abductors in older adults. We recruited 12 healthy community-dwelling older adults that underwent a spiral computerized tomography scan. High density lean (HDL), IMAT, and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SUBFAT) cross-sectional area of the GM were assessed. sEMG signal from the GM was recorded while participants performed an MVIC of the hip abductors. There was a negative correlation between GM activation and IMAT (r = -0.58, P = 0.046), and also SUBFAT (r = -0.78, P = 0.002) and a positive correlation with HDL (r = 0.73, P = 0.006). When controlling for SUBFAT, the partial correlations demonstrated a consistent negative correlation between GM activation and IMAT (r = -0.60, P = 0.050) but no relationship with HDL. The current results are important for helping to interpret the results from sEMG by accounting for IMAT. In conclusion, the neuromuscular activation of the GM may be reduced by the quantity of IMAT.

The present study aimed to investigate the association between rate of torque development (RTD), rate of activation (RoA), and muscle structure [muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), intramuscular fat (IMAT) and high density lean muscle (HDL)] with the weight transfer phase (WTP) during a choice reaction step test (CST) in older adults. Fifteen healthy older adults (7 females) participated in this study. Stance leg hip adductors RTD at 100, 150, and 200 ms, showed a significant inverse correlation with WTP (r ≥ 0.658, P ≤ 0.010). There was a significant inverse relationship between WTP and adductor magnus and tensor fascia latae RoA at all time points (RoA0-50-RoA0-200; r ≥ 0.707, P ≤ 0.033). In contrast, the WTP was not significantly associated with the hip abductor RTD, gluteus medius RoA, or muscle structure (CSA, IMAT, and HDL). Swing leg showed no significant relationship between WTP and RTD, RoA or muscle structure of the hip abductor or adductor muscles. In conclusion, the present study showed that hip adductor torque-time capacity, as well as neuromuscular activation of the adductor magnus and tensor fascia latae of the stance leg during a maximal isometric test, is associated with the ability to transfer body weight before a step to the side occurs.

PURPOSE: There are suggestions that isometric resistance training (RT) produces highly angle-specific changes in strength with the greatest changes at the training angle, but these effects remain controversial with limited rigorous evidence, and the possible underpinning physiological mechanism(s) remain opaque. This study investigated the extent of angle-specific changes in strength and neuromuscular activation after RT in comparison to a control group. METHODS: A RT group (n = 13) performed 14 isometric RT sessions at a knee-joint angle of 65° (0° is anatomical position) over a 4-week period, whilst a control group (CON, n = 9) maintained their habitual activity. Pre- and post-test sessions involved voluntary and evoked isometric knee extension contractions at five knee-joint angles (35°, 50°, 65°, 80° and 95°), while electromyography was recorded. RESULTS: RT group increased maximum voluntary torque (MVT) at the training angle (65°; + 12%) as well as 80° (+ 7%), 50° (+ 11%) and 35° (+ 5%). Joint-angle specificity was demonstrated within the RT group (MVT increased more at some angles vs. others), and also by more rigorous between-group comparisons (i.e., larger improvements after RT vs. CON at some angles than others). For the RT group, normalized EMG increased at three of the same joint angles as strength, but not for CON. Importantly, however, neither within- or between-group analyses provided evidence of joint angle-specific changes in activation. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study provides robust evidence for joint angle-specific strength gains after isometric RT, with weaker evidence that changes in neuromuscular activation may contribute to these adaptations.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of resistance training (RT) duration, including years of exposure, on agonist and antagonist neuromuscular activation throughout the knee extension voluntary torque range. Fifty-seven healthy men (untrained [UNT] n = 29, short-term RT [12WK] n = 14, and long-term RT [4YR] n = 14) performed maximum and sub-maximum (20%-80% maximum voluntary torque [MVT]) unilateral isometric knee extension contractions with torque, agonist and antagonist surface EMG recorded. Agonist EMG, including at MVT, was corrected for the confounding effects of adiposity (ie, muscle-electrode distance; measured with ultrasonography). Quadriceps maximum anatomical cross-sectional area (QACSAMAX ; via MRI) was also assessed. MVT was distinct for all three groups (4YR +60/+39% vs UNT/12WK; 12WK +15% vs UNT; 0.001 < P ≤ 0.021), and QACSAMAX was greater for 4YR (+50/+42% vs UNT/12WK; [both] P < 0.001). Agonist EMG at MVT was +44/+33% greater for 4YR /12WK ([both] P < 0.001) vs. UNT, but did not differ between RT groups. The torque-agonist EMG relationship of 4YR displayed a right/down shift with lower agonist EMG at the highest common torque (196 Nm) compared to 12WK and UNT (0.005 ≤ P ≤ 0.013; Effect size [ES] 0.90 ≤ ES ≤ 1.28). The torque-antagonist EMG relationship displayed a lower slope with increasing RT duration (4YR < 12WK < UNT; 0.001 < P ≤ 0.094; 0.56 ≤ ES ≤ 1.31), and antagonist EMG at the highest common torque was also lower for 4YR than UNT (-69%; P < 0.001; ES = 1.18). In conclusion, 4YR and 12WK had similar agonist activation at MVT and this adaptation may be maximized during early months of RT. In contrast, inter-muscular coordination, specifically antagonist coactivation was progressively lower, and likely continues to adapt, with prolonged RT.
