RESUMO

The near-infrared (NIR) sensor technology is crucial for various applications such as autonomous driving and biometric tracking. Silicon photodetectors (SiPDs) are widely used in NIR applications; however, their scalability is limited by their crystalline properties. Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have attracted attention for NIR applications owing to their scalability, low-temperature processing, and notably low dark current density (JD), which is similar to that of SiPDs. However, the still high JD (at NIR band) and few measurements of noise equivalent powers (NEPs) pose challenges for accurate performance comparisons. This study addresses these issues by quantitatively characterizing the performance matrix and JD generation mechanism using electron-blocking layers (EBLs) in OPDs. The energy offset at an EBL/photosensitive layer interface determines the thermal activation energy and directly affects JD. A newly synthesized EBL (3PAFBr) substantially enhances the interfacial energy barrier by forming a homogeneous contact owing to the improved anchoring ability of 3PAFBr. As a result, the OPD with 3PAFBr yields a noise current of 852 aA (JD = 12.3 fA cm⁻2 at V → -0.1 V) and several femtowatt-scale NEPs. As far as it is known, this is an ultralow of JD in NIR OPDs. This emphasizes the necessity for quantitative performance characterization.

RESUMO

Background: We previously developed a machine learning (ML)-assisted system for predicting the clinical activity score (CAS) in thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) using digital facial images taken by a digital single-lens reflex camera in a studio setting. In this study, we aimed to apply this system to smartphones and detect active TAO (CAS ≥3) using facial images captured by smartphone cameras. We evaluated the performance of our system on various smartphone models and compared it with the performance of ophthalmologists with varying clinical experience. Methods: We applied the preexisting ML architecture to classify photos taken with smartphones (Galaxy S21 Ultra, iPhone 12 pro, iPhone 11, iPhone SE 2020, Galaxy M20, and Galaxy A21S). The performance was evaluated with smartphone-captured images from 100 patients with TAO. Three ophthalmology residents, three general ophthalmologists with <5 years of clinical experience, and three oculoplastic specialists independently interpreted the same set of images taken under a studio environment and compared their results with those generated by the smartphone-based ML-assisted system. Reference CAS was determined by a consensus of three oculoplastic specialists. Results: Active TAO (CAS ≥3) was identified in 28 patients. Smartphone model used in capturing facial images influenced active TAO detection performance (F1 score 0.59-0.72). The smartphone-based system showed 74.5% sensitivity, 84.8% specificity, and F1 score 0.70 on top three smartphones. On images from all six smartphones, average sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score were 71.4%, 81.6%, and 0.66, respectively. Ophthalmology residents' values were 69.1%, 55.1%, and 0.46. General ophthalmologists' values were 61.9%, 79.6%, and 0.55. Oculoplastic specialists' values were 73.8%, 90.7%, and 0.75. This smartphone-based ML-assisted system predicted CAS within 1 point of reference CAS in 90.7% using facial images from smartphones. Conclusions: Our smartphone-based ML-assisted system shows reasonable accuracy in detecting active TAO, comparable with oculoplastic specialists and outperforming residents and general ophthalmologists. It may enable reliable self-monitoring for disease activity, but confirmatory research is needed for clinical application.

RESUMO

AIM: Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is increasing. There is little evidence identifying the association between hospital ECLS case volumes and outcomes in different populations receiving ECLS or conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The goal of this investigation was to identify the association between ECLS case volumes and clinical outcomes of OHCA patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study used the National OHCA Registry for adult OHCA cases in Seoul, Korea between January 2015 and December 2019. If the ECLS volume during the study period was >20, the institution was defined as a high-volume ECLS center. Others were defined as low-volume ECLS centers. Outcomes were good neurologic recovery (cerebral performance category 1 or 2) and survival to discharge. We performed multivariate logistic regression and interaction analyses to assess the association between case volume and clinical outcome. RESULTS: Of the 17,248 OHCA cases, 3,731 were transported to high-volume centers. Among the patients who underwent ECLS, those at high-volume centers had a higher neurologic recovery rate than those at low-volume centers (17.0% vs. 12.0%), and the adjusted OR for good neurologic recovery was 2.22 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15-4.28) in high-volume centers compared to low-volume centers. For patients who received conventional CPR, high-volume centers also showed higher survival-to-discharge rates (adjusted OR of 1.16, 95%CI: 1.01-1.34). CONCLUSIONS: High-volume ECLS centers showed better neurological recovery in patients who underwent ECLS. High-volume centers also had better survival-to-discharge rates than low-volume centers for patients not receiving ECLS.

RESUMO

Quantum dot photodiodes (QPDs) have garnered significant attention because of their unparalleled near-infrared (NIR) detection capabilities, primarily attributable to their size-dependent bandgap tunability. Nevertheless, the broadband absorption spectrum of QPD engenders substantial noise floor within superfluous visible light regions, notably hindering their use in several emerging applications necessitating the detection of faint micro-light signals. To overcome these hurdles, a self-screenable NIR QPD featuring an internal optical filter with a thick polymeric interlayer to reduce electronic noise is demonstrated. This effectively screens out undesirable visible light regions while reducing the ionized defect owing to decreased density of state, yielding an extremely low dark current (≈1010 A cm-2 at V = -1 V). Consequently, the electronic noise spectral density is attained at levels below ≈10-27 -10-28 A2 Hz-1 , and responsivity (R) dropped to 92% within the visible light spectrum.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The suicide rate in Korea was the highest among the member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) for 2013-2016 and 2018-2020. In korea, suicide was the leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-39, and the second leading cause of death for aged 40-59. Thus, this study aimed to examine the Werther effect of the suicides of three Korean idol singers (Jonghyun: December 18, 2017, Sulli: October 14, 2019, and Hara Gu: November 24, 2019). METHODS: The study conducted Poisson regression and used the cause-of-death statistics microdata from 2016 to 2020 provided by Statistics Korea. The case periods ranged from the day of the suicide of each celebrity to 10 weeks after. The control periods were all weeks from 2016 to 2020, excluding the case periods. RESULTS: The suicide rates in Korea significantly increased by 1.21, 1.30, and 1.28 times after the deaths of Jonghyun, Sulli, and Hara Gu, respectively. The Werther effect was more evident in women than men. Suicide rate among individuals aged 10-29 years was greater than those for other age groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that the rate of copycat suicides increased after three celebrity singers in Korea died by suicide. Nevertheless, the rate of suicide after the suicide of the three celebrity singers was lower than those in previous studies in Korea.

RESUMO

Although the clinical activity score (CAS) is a validated scoring system for identifying disease activity of thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), it may produce differing results depending on the evaluator, and an experienced ophthalmologist is required for accurate evaluation. In this study, we developed a machine learning (ML)-assisted system to mimic an expert's CAS assessment using digital facial images and evaluated its accuracy for predicting the CAS and diagnosing active TAO (CAS ≥ 3). An ML-assisted system was designed to assess five CAS components related to inflammatory signs (redness of the eyelids, redness of the conjunctiva, swelling of the eyelids, inflammation of the caruncle and/or plica, and conjunctival edema) in patients' facial images and to predict the CAS by considering two components of subjective symptoms (spontaneous retrobulbar pain and pain on gaze). To train and test the system, 3,060 cropped images from 1020 digital facial images of TAO patients were used. The reference CAS for each image was scored by three ophthalmologists, each with > 15 years of clinical experience. We repeated the experiments for 30 randomly split training and test sets at a ratio of 8:2. The sensitivity and specificity of the ML-assisted system for diagnosing active TAO were 72.7% and 83.2% in the test set constructed from the entire dataset. For the test set constructed from the dataset with consistent results for the three ophthalmologists, the sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing active TAO were 88.1% and 86.9%. In the test sets from the entire dataset and from the dataset with consistent results, 40.0% and 49.9% of the predicted CAS values were the same as the reference CAS, respectively. The system predicted the CAS within 1 point of the reference CAS in 84.6% and 89.0% of cases when tested using the entire dataset and in the dataset with consistent results, respectively. An ML-assisted system estimated the clinical activity of TAO and detect inflammatory active TAO with reasonable accuracy. The accuracy could be improved further by obtaining more data. This ML-assisted system can help evaluate the disease activity consistently as well as accurately and enable the early diagnosis and timely treatment of active TAO.

RESUMO

Objective: Social distancing has been confirmed to reduce the incidence of not only the COVID-19, but also the incidence of other diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of social distancing policies on the incidence of infectious eye diseases by monitoring their nationwide incidence data in all age groups. Methods: In this study, to analyse the impact of COVID-19 policy on IEDSC, the time periods were divided into two interventions. The first intervention was the first COVID-19 patient report in Korea on 19 January 2020. The second intervention was relaxation of the social distancing policy on 6 May 2020. Segmented regression analysis of the interrupted time series was used to assess COVID-19 policies on the IEDSC. Results: After the first incidence of a COVID-19 patient, IEDSCs decreased significantly in all age groups, while the relaxation of the social distancing policy increased IEDSCs significantly, mostly in all groups. Conclusion: In the post-COVID-19 era, we hope that national-level interventions such as reducing air pollution and employing precautionary measures will significantly reduce the financial burden of developing infectious ophthalmic diseases.

RESUMO

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels have been widely used for cell encapsulation in tissue engineering due to their cell adhesiveness and biocompatibility. However, free radicals generated during gelation decrease the viability of the encapsulated cells by increasing intracellular oxidative stress, so appropriate strategies for scavenging free radicals need to be developed. To meet that need, we developed composite GelMA hydrogels incorporating nanofiber particles (EF) coated with epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG). The GelMA composite hydrogels were successfully fabricated and had a storage modulus of about 5 kPa, which is similar to that of pristine GelMA hydrogel, and the drastic free radical scavenging activity of EGCG was highly preserved after gelation. In addition, human adipose-derived stem cells encapsulated within our composite hydrogels had better viability (about 1.5 times) and decreased intracellular oxidative stress (about 0.3 times) compared with cells within the pristine GelMA hydrogel. We obtained similar results with human dermal fibroblasts and human umbilical vein endothelial cells, indicating that our composite hydrogels are suitable for various cell types. Furthermore, we found that the ability of the encapsulated cells to spread and migrate increased by 5 times within the composite hydrogels. Collectively, our results demonstrate that incorporating EF into GelMA hydrogels is a promising way to enhance cell viability by reducing free-radical-derived cellular damage when fabricating 3D tissue ex vivo. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels have been widely applied to various tissue engineering applications because of their biocompatibility and cell interactivity. However, free radicals generated during the GelMA hydrogel fabrication decrease the viability of encapsulated cells by elevating intracellular oxidative stress. Here, we demonstrate radical scavenging GelMA hydrogels incorporating epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG)-coated nanofiber particles (EF). The composite GelMA hydrogels are successfully fabricated, maintaining their mechanical properties, and the viability of encapsulated human adipose-derived stem cells is greatly improved after the gelation, indicating that our composite GelMA hydrogel alleviates damages from free radicals. Collectively, the incorporation of EF within GelMA hydrogels may be a promising way to enhance the viability of encapsulated cells, which could be applied to 3D tissue fabrication.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of the presence or absence of avoidable hospitalization before acquiring coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on COVID-19-related deaths. Methods: This study used the total NHIS-COVID-19 dataset comprising domestic COVID-19 patients, provided by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in South Korea. We conducted logistic regression and double robust estimation (DRE) to confirm the effect of avoidable hospitalization on COVID-19-related deaths. Results: Logistic regression analysis confirmed that the odds ratio (OR) of death due to COVID-19 was high in the group that experienced avoidable hospitalization. DRE analysis showed a higher OR of death due to COVID-19 in the group that experienced avoidable hospitalization compared to the group that did not experience avoidable hospitalization, except in the subgroup aged ≤69 years. Conclusion: The effect of avoidable hospitalization on COVID-19-related deaths was confirmed. Therefore, continued health care, preventive medicine, and public health management are essential for reducing avoidable hospitalizations despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinicians need to be informed about the importance of continuous disease management.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal stem cell spheroids have been encapsulated in hydrogels for various applications because spheroids demonstrate higher cell activity than individual cells in suspension. However, there is limited information on the effect of distance between spheroids (inter-spheroid distance) on fusion or migration in a hydrogel. In this study, we developed temperature-responsive hydrogels with surface microwell patterns to culture adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) spheroids and deliver them into a Matrigel for the investigation of the effect of inter-spheroid distance on spheroid behavior. The ASC spheroids were encapsulated successfully in a Matrigel, denoted as sandwich culture, with a specific inter-spheroid distance ranging from 100 to 400 µm. Interestingly, ASCs migrated from the host spheroid and formed a bridge-like structure between spheroids, denoted as a cellular bridge, only when the inter-spheroid distance was 200 µm. Thus, we performed a sandwich culture of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and ASCs in co-cultured spheroids in the Matrigel to create a homogeneous endothelial cell network in the hydrogel. The HUVECs sprouted through the ASC cellular bridge and directly interacted with the adjacent spheroid when the inter-spheroid distance was 200 µm. Similar results were obtained from an in vivo study. Thus, our study suggests the appropriate inter-spheroid distance for effective spheroid encapsulation in a hydrogel. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Recently, spheroid-based 3D tissue culture techniques such as spheroid encapsulation or 3D printing are being intensively investigated for various purposes. However, there is limited research regarding the effect of the inter-spheroid distance on spheroid communication. Here, we demonstrate a spatially arranged spheroid encapsulation method within a Matrigel by using a temperature-responsive hydrogel. Human adipose-derived stem cell spheroids are encapsulated with a precisely controlled inter-spheroid distance from 100 to 400 µm and show different tendencies in cell migration and spheroid fusion. Our results suggest that the inter-spheroid distance affects spheroid communication, and thus, the inter-spheroid distance needs to be considered carefully according to the purpose.

RESUMO

Cell spheroids are three-dimensional cell aggregates that have been widely employed in tissue engineering. Spheroid encapsulation has been explored as a method to enhance cell-cell interactions. However, the effect of hydrogel mechanical properties on spheroids, specifically soft hydrogels (<1 kPa), has not yet been studied. In this study, we determined the effect of encapsulation of stem cell spheroids by hydrogels crosslinked with different concentrations of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) on the functions of the stem cells. To this end, human adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) spheroids with a defined size were prepared, and spheroid-laden hydrogels with various concentrations (5, 10, 15%) were fabricated. The apoptotic index of cells from spheroids encapsulated in the 15% hydrogel was high. The migration distance was five-fold higher in cells encapsulated in the 5% hydrogel than the 10% hydrogel. After 14 days of culture, cells from spheroids in the 5% hydrogel were observed to have spread and proliferated. Osteogenic factor and pro-angiogenic factor production in the 15% hydrogel was high. Collectively, our results indicate that the functionality of spheroids can be regulated by the mechanical properties of hydrogel, even under 1 kPa. These results indicate that spheroid-laden hydrogels are suitable for use in 3D tissue construction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous pneumothorax should be classified as primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) or secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) because treatment strategies may differ depending on underlying lung conditions and clinical course. The pulmonary dysfunction can lead to changes in end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2). The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in ETCO2 between PSP and SSP. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included adult patients diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax in the emergency room from April 2019 to September 2020. We divided patients into PSP and SSP groups and compared ETCO2 variables between the two groups. RESULTS: There were 33 (66%) patients in the PSP group and 17 (34%) patients in the SSP group. Initial ETCO2 was lower in the SSP group than in the PSP group (30 (23-33) vs. 35 (33-38) mmHg, p=0.002). Multivariate analysis revealed that respiratory gas associated with SSP was initial ETCO2 (OR: 0.824; 95% CI: 0.697-0.974, p=0.023). The optimal cutoff for initial ETCO2 to detection of SSP was 32 mmHg (area under curve, 0.754), with 76.5% sensitivity and 72.7% specificity. CONCLUSION: ETCO2 monitoring is a reliable noninvasive indicator of differentiating between PSP and SSP. Initial ETCO2 lower than 32 mmHg is a predictor of SSP.

RESUMO

During self-reporting, respondents underreport their smoking status for various reasons. We aimed to evaluate the difference between smoking status self-reporting and urinary cotinine tests in Korea respondents. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with the differences between self-reporting and urinary cotinine criteria. The dependent variable was the underreporting of smoking status; independent variables were sociodemographic, health status, and secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. Total underreporting was 3.6% when Cot ≥164 and 4.0% when Cot-variable (classified) criteria underreported. Positive associations were found between smoking and age, education, drinking, and SHS. Underreporting in the nonsmoker group (odds ratio [OR] = 2.336; confidence interval [CI] = 1.717-3.179) was significantly associated with SHS, but this difference was nonsignificant in the ex-smoker group (OR = 1.184; CI = 0.879-1.638). Underreporting was 3.6% to 4.0%, and C-statistics was about 0.7, indicating that outcomes could be classified. SHS in nonsmokers was positively associated with underreporting; however, only the nonsmoker group had positive associations, demonstrating unintentional underreporting due to SHS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: PfFAD3 transgenic soybean expressing omega-3 fatty acid desaturase 3 of Physaria produces increased level of α-linolenic acid in seed. Composition data of non-transgenic conventional varieties is important in the safety assessment of the genetically-modified (GM) crops in the context of the natural variation. RESULTS: The natural variation was characterized in seed composition of 13 Korean soybean varieties grown in three locations in South Korea for 2 years. Univariate analysis of combined data showed significant differences by variety and cultivation environment for proximates, minerals, anti-nutrients, and fatty acids. Percent variability analysis demonstrated that genotype, environment and the interaction of environment with genotype contributed to soybean seed compositions. Principal component analysis and orthogonal projections to latent structure discriminant analysis indicated that significant variance in compositions was attributable to location and cultivation year. The composition of three PfFAD3 soybean lines for proximates, minerals, anti-nutrients, and fatty acids was compared to a non-transgenic commercial comparator (Kwangankong, KA), and three non-transgenic commercial varieties grown at two sites in South Korea. Only linoleic and linolenic acids significantly differed in PfFAD3-1 lines compared to KA, which were expected changes by the introduction of the PfFAD3-1 trait in KA. CONCLUSION: Genotype, environment, and the interaction of environment with genotype contributed to compositional variability in soybean. PfFAD3-1 soybean is equivalent to the conventional varieties with respect to these components. © 2020 The Authors. RESUMO

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), which are natural nanomaterials, have a hollow tubular structure with about 15 nm inner and 50 nm outer diameters. Because of their tubular shape, HNTs loaded with various materials have been investigated as functional nanocapsules. In this study, thyme essential oil (TO) was encapsulated successfully in HNTs using vacuum pulling methods, followed by end-capping or a layer-by-layer surface coating process for complete encapsulation. Nanocapsules loaded with TO were mixed with flexographic ink and coated on a paper for applications as food packaging materials. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology of the nanocapsules and to confirm the TO loading of the nanocapsules. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses analysis were used to complement the structural information. In addition, the controlled release of TO from the nanocapsules showed sustained release properties over a period of many days. The results reveal that the release properties of TO in these nanocapsules could be controlled by surface modifications such as end-capping and/or surface coating of bare nanocapsules. The packaging paper with TO-loaded HNT capsules was effective in eliminating against Escherichia coli during the first 5 d and showed strong antibacterial activity for about 10 d.

RESUMO

Dokdo, located east of the mainland of South Korea, is a volcanic island designated as a natural monument of South Korea due to its ecological value. Dokdo is divided into Dongdo and Seodo, islands with geological differences. The soil bacterial communities on Dokdo (Dongdo and Seodo) were analyzed using the pyrosequencing method. There were 1,693 and 1,408 operational taxonomic units (OTU) from Dongdo and Seodo, respectively. The statistical analyses (rarefaction curves as well as Chao1, Shannon, and Simpson indices) showed that bacterial diversity was slightly higher in Dongdo than Seodo. From results of a BLASTN search against the EzTaxon-e database, the validated reads (obtained after sequence preprocessing) were almost all classified at the phylum level. From the phylum level down to the species level, the number of classified reads considerably decreased due to the absence of information concerning unculturable or unidentified bacteria to date. Among the 36 phyla identified, three phyla (Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria) accounted for around 74.64%. The taxonomic composition was similar at the higher ranks (family and above) between Dongdo and Seodo, but a little different at the genus level. There were also various differences in the relative abundance of taxonomic ranks between Dongdo and Seodo. In particular, the proportion of the genus Acidobacterium (of the phylum Acidobacteria) was about six times higher in Seodo than Dongdo. In addition, the percentage of the genus Mycobacterium (of the phylum Actinobacteria) was nearly three times higher in Seodo than Dongdo, and the proportion of the genus Gaiella was about 3.7 times higher in Dongdo than Seodo. Overall, through the metagenomic analysis, the number of species identified in Dongdo and Seodo was 1,239 and 1,055, respectively. This information on the numerous culturable and unculturable bacteria is expected to help in the screening of new species in Dokdo.

RESUMO

Tricholoma matsutake, an ectomycorrhiza that has mutual relationships with the rootlet of Pinus denisflora, forms a fruiting body that serves as a valuable food in Asia. However, the artificial culture of this fungus has not been successful. Soil fungi, including T. matsutake, coexist with many other microorganisms and plants; therefore, complex microbial communities have an influence on the fruiting body formation of T. matsutake. Here, we report on the structures of fungal communities associated with the fairy ring of T. matsutake through the pyrosequencing method. Soil samples were collected inside the fairy ring zone, in the fairy ring zone, and outside the fairy ring zone. A total of 37,125 sequencing reads were obtained and 728 to 1,962 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were observed in the sampling zones. The fairy ring zone had the lowest OTUs and the lowest fungal diversity of all sampling zones. The number of OTUs and fungal taxa inside and outside the fairy ring zone was, respectively, about 2 times and 1.5 times higher than the fairy ring. Taxonomic analysis showed that each sampling zone has different fungal communities. In particular, out of 209 genera total, 6 genera in the fairy ring zone, such as Hemimycena, were uniquely present and 31 genera, such as Mycena, Boletopsis, and Repetophragma, were specifically absent. The results of metagenomic analysis based on the pyrosequencing indicate a decrease of fungal communities in the fairy ring zone and changes of fungal communities depending on the fairy ring growth of T. matsutake.
