RESUMO

Objective: Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) is increasingly being recognized as an important invasive modality for presurgical evaluation of epilepsy. This study focuses on the clinical and technical considerations of SEEG investigations when using conventional frame-based stereotaxy, drawing on institutional experience and a comprehensive review of relevant literature. Methods: This retrospective observational study encompassed the surgical implantation of 201 SEEG electrodes in 16 epilepsy patients using a frame-based stereotactic instrument at a single tertiary-level center. We provide detailed descriptions of the operative procedures and technical nuances for bilateral and multiple SEEG insertions, along with several illustrative cases. Additionally, we present a literature review on the technical aspects of the SEEG procedure, discussing its clinical implications and potential risks. Results: Frame-based SEEG electrode placements were successfully performed through sagittal arc application, with the majority (81.2%) of cases being bilateral and involving up to 18 electrodes in a single operation. The median skin-to-skin operation time was 162 minutes (interquartile range [IQR], 145-200), with a median of 13 minutes (IQR, 12-15) per electrode placement for time efficiency. There were two occurrences (1.0%) of electrode misplacement and one instance (0.5%) of a postoperative complication, which manifested as a delayed intraparenchymal hemorrhage. Following SEEG investigation, 11 patients proceeded with surgical intervention, resulting in favorable seizure outcomes for nine (81.8%) and complete remission for eight cases (72.7%). Conclusion: Conventional frame-based stereotactic techniques remain a reliable and effective option for bilateral and multiple SEEG electrode placements. While SEEG is a suitable approach for selected patients who are strong candidates for epilepsy surgery, it is important to remain vigilant concerning the potential risks of electrode misplacement and hemorrhagic complications.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the treatment approaches and locoregional patterns for Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the breast, which is an uncommon malignant tumor with limited clinical data. Materials and Methods: A total of 93 patients diagnosed with primary ACC in the breast between 1992 and 2022 were collected from multi-institutions. All patients underwent surgical resection, including breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or total mastectomy (TM). The recurrence patterns and locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) were assessed. Results: Seventy-five patients (80.7%) underwent BCS, and 71 of them (94.7%) received post-operative radiation therapy (PORT). Eighteen patients (19.3%) underwent TM, with 5 of them (27.8%) also receiving PORT. With a median follow-up of 50 months, the LRFS rate was 84.2% at 5 years. Local recurrence (LR) was observed in 5 patients (5.4%) and 4 cases (80%) of the LR occurred in the tumor bed. Three of LR (3/75, 4.0%) had a history of BCS and PORT, meanwhile, two of LR (2/18, 11.1%) had a history of mastectomy. Regional recurrence occurred in 2 patients (2.2%), and both cases had a history of PORT with (n=1) and without (n=1) irradiation of the regional lymph nodes. Partial breast irradiation (p=0.35), BCS (p=0.96) and PORT in BCS group (p=0.33) had no significant association with LRFS. Conclusion: BCS followed by PORT was the predominant treatment approach for ACC of the breast and local recurrence mostly occurred in the tumor bed. The findings of this study suggest that partial breast irradiation might be considered for PORT in primary breast ACC.

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the supplementary effects of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) and sodium butyrate (SB) when a graded level of fish meal (FM) was replaced with soy protein concentrate (SPC) in diets for juvenile red seabream (Pagrus major). A control diet was designed to contain 60% FM (F60). Two other diets were formulated by reducing FM levels to 40% and 20% with SPC (F40 and F20). Six more diets were formulated by adding 0.02% GABA or 0.2% SB to each F60, F40 and F20 diets (F60G, F60S, F40G, F40S, F20G and F20S). Each diet was randomly assigned to a triplicate group of fish (5.52 g/fish) and provided for eight weeks. Final body weight, weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed F60G, F60S, F40G and F40S diets were comparable and significantly higher (p < 0.05) than other groups. The growth of fish fed SB-containing diets was significantly increased (p < 0.05) compared to fish fed the respective control diets. The feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the fish fed all diets containing 60% and 40% FM compared to F20 and F20G groups. The F40S diet resulted in the highest feed utilization values. The F20S group exhibited significantly higher (p < 0.05) feed utilization than the F20 and F20G groups. Serum lysozyme activity was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in fish fed the GABA- and SB-containing diets compared to the F20 group. The F60S group exhibited the highest lysozyme activity which was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in the F20 and F40 groups. Therefore, the growth performance, feed utilization and innate immunity of red seabream can be enhanced by dietary supplementation with GABA or SB in low-FM diets containing SPC. The FM level in the juvenile red seabream diet can be reduced to 40% with SPC and GABA or SB while maintaining performance better than a diet containing 60% FM.

Despite previous efforts to build statistical models for predicting the risk of suicidal behavior using machine-learning analysis, a high-accuracy model can lead to overfitting. Furthermore, internal validation cannot completely address this problem. In this study, we created models for predicting the occurrence of suicide attempts among Koreans at high risk of suicide, and we verified these models in an independent cohort. We performed logistic and penalized regression for suicide attempts within 6 months among suicidal ideators and attempters in The Korean Cohort for the Model Predicting a Suicide and Suicide-related Behavior (K-COMPASS). We then validated the models in a test cohort. Our findings indicated that several factors significantly predicted suicide attempts in the models, including young age, suicidal ideation, previous suicidal attempts, anxiety, alcohol abuse, stress, and impulsivity. The area under the curve and positive predictive values were 0.941 and 0.484 after variable selection and 0.751 and 0.084 in the test cohort. The corresponding values for the penalized regression model were 0.943 and 0.524 in the original training cohort and 0.794 and 0.115 in the test cohort. The prediction model constructed through a prospective cohort study of the suicide high-risk group showed satisfactory accuracy even in the test cohort. The accuracy with penalized regression was greater than that with the "classical" logistic model.

Global public health is facing a major issue with emerging resistance to antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial agents that are currently on the market are strong and efficient, but it has not been ruled out that these medications will eventually cause resistance to bacteria. Exploring novel bioactive compounds derived from natural sources is therefore, crucial to meet future demands. The present study evaluated the mode of action of the antimicrobial potential protease enzyme SH21. Protease SH21 exhibited antimicrobial activity, strong heat stability (up to 100 °C), and pH stability (pH 3.0 to 9.0). In terms of mode of action, we found that protease SH21 was able to disrupt the bacterial cell membrane as the results of the nucleotide leakage and cell membrane permeability assay. In addition, we also checked inner membrane permeability by PI uptake assay which suggested that protease SH21 has the ability to enter the bacterial cell membrane. Our results revealed that the antimicrobial protease SH21 might be a promising candidate for treating microbial infections.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Assessment of thoracolumbar spine flexibility is crucial for determining which osteotomy to perform (posterior column osteotomy or 3-column osteotomy) to restore sagittal balance. Although preoperative bolster supine X-rays have been used to evaluate spine flexibility, their correlation with postoperative spinopelvic parameters has not been reported. We aimed to evaluate the predictive value of bolster X-ray for correcting sagittal deformities after thoracolumbar fusion surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent bolster supine radiography before posterior thoracolumbar fusion. Demographic data, operative records, and radiographic parameters were also recorded. The segmental Cobb angle, defined as the angle between the upper endplate of the uppermost and lower endplates of the lowest instrumented vertebrae, was compared between bolster and postoperative X-ray to evaluate the correlation between them. The predictive value of bolster X-ray for postoperative deformity correction was measured using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). RESULTS: Forty-two patients were included. The preoperative segmental Cobb angle (-1.4 ± 22.4) was significantly lower than the bolster segmental Cobb angle (23.2 ± 18.7, P < .001) and postoperative segmental Cobb angle (27.9 ± 22.3, P < .001); however, no significant difference was observed between the bolster and postoperative segmental Cobb angles (P = .746). Bolster X-ray showed a very strong correlation with postoperative X-ray (r = 0.950, P < .001) for segmental Cobb angle. Bolster supine X-ray had good-to-excellent reliability for postoperative X-ray with an ICC of 0.913 (95% CI, 0.760-0.962, P < .001) for the segmental Cobb angle. CONCLUSION: Bolster supine X-rays demonstrate good-to-excellent reliability with postoperative X-rays for segmental Cobb angles. These findings offer valuable insights into the selection of appropriate osteotomy techniques for clinical practice.

To enhance security in the semiconductor industry's globalized production, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) proposed an authentication protocol under the Supply Chain Hardware Integrity for Electronics Defense (SHIELD) program. This protocol integrates a secure hardware root-of-trust, known as a dielet, into integrated circuits (ICs). The SHIELD protocol, combined with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in counter mode, named CTR-SHIELD, targets try-and-check attacks. However, CTR-SHIELD is vulnerable to desynchronization attacks on its counter blocks. To counteract this, we introduce the DTR-SHIELD protocol, where DTR stands for double counters. DTR-SHIELD addresses the desynchronization issue by altering the counter incrementation process, which previously solely relied on truncated serial IDs. Our protocol adds a new AES encryption step and requires the dielet to transmit an additional 100 bits, ensuring more robust security through active server involvement and message verification.

ABSTRACT: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a variety of lung disorders with varying degrees of inflammation or fibrosis, requiring a combination of clinical, imaging, and pathologic data for evaluation. Imaging is essential for the noninvasive diagnosis of the disease, as well as for assessing disease severity, monitoring its progression, and evaluating treatment response. However, traditional visual assessments of ILD with computed tomography (CT) suffer from reader variability. Automated quantitative CT offers a more objective approach by using computer-based analysis to consistently evaluate and measure ILD. Advancements in technology have significantly improved the accuracy and reliability of these measurements. Recently, interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs), which represent potential preclinical ILD incidentally found on CT scans and are characterized by abnormalities in over 5% of any lung zone, have gained attention and clinical importance. The challenge lies in the accurate and consistent identification of ILA, given that its definition relies on a subjective threshold, making quantitative tools crucial for precise ILA evaluation. This review highlights the state of CT quantification of ILD and ILA, addressing clinical and research disparities while emphasizing how machine learning or deep learning in quantitative imaging can improve diagnosis and management by providing more accurate assessments, and finally, suggests the future directions of quantitative CT in this area.

BACKGROUND: Venoactive drugs (VADs) based on Vitis vinifera extract are widely used in Korea. However, studies on the clinical effects and head-to-head comparisons with other groups of VADs are limited. This trial aimed to evaluate whether Vitis vinifera seed extract was non-inferior to the micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) in relieving venous symptoms and improving quality of life in patients with chronic venous disease (CVD). METHODS: In this double-blind prospective randomized trial, patients from 13 hospitals, who were diagnosed with venous incompetence by duplex ultrasound and classified as clinical class 1, 2, or 3 in the Clinical, Etiological, Anatomical, and Pathophysiological classifications were enrolled. The primary outcome was the change in the Chronic Venous Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (CIVIQ-20) score at 8 weeks from baseline. Secondary outcomes included changes in the Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ), visual analog scale (VAS), and Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) at 4- and 8 weeks from baseline. Moreover, the change in leg circumferences was measured at 8 weeks and compared to baseline. RESULTS: In total, 303 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either Vitis vinifera seed extract (n = 154) or MPFF (n = 149). The CIVIQ-20 scores at 8 weeks were significantly reduced compared to those at baseline in both groups. No significant inter-group difference in the change of CIVIQ-20 at 8 weeks from baseline was observed (-8.31 ± 14.63 vs. -10.35 ± 14.38, P = 0.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.65 to 5.72). The lower limit of the 95% CI was within the predefined noninferiority margin of 6.9. Furthermore, the AVVQ, VAS, and VCSS scores significantly decreased at 4- and 8 weeks after randomization compared with baseline in both groups. No significant differences were observed in the reduction of each score between groups. The calf circumference measured at 8 weeks was significantly reduced compared to that at baseline in patients receiving Vitis vinifera seed extract. CONCLUSIONS: Vitis vinifera seed extract was non-inferior to MPFF in relieving venous symptoms and improving the quality of life in patients with CVD.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is a suitable target for gene panel sequencing because a considerable portion of epilepsy is now explained by genetic components, especially in syndromic cases. However, previous gene panel studies on epilepsy have mostly focused on pediatric patients. METHODS: We enrolled adult epilepsy patients meeting any of the following criteria: family history of epilepsy, seizure onset age ≤ 19 years, neuronal migration disorder, and seizure freedom not achieved by dual anti-seizure medications. We sequenced the exonic regions of 211 epilepsy genes in these patients. To confirm the pathogenicity of a novel MTOR truncating variant, we electroporated vectors with different MTOR variants into developing mouse brains. RESULTS: A total of 92 probands and 4 affected relatives were tested, and the proportion of intellectual disability (ID) and/or developmental disability (DD) was 21.7%. As a result, twelve probands (13.0%) had pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in the following genes or regions: DEPDC5, 15q12-q13 duplication (n = 2), SLC6A1, SYNGAP1, EEF1A2, LGI1, MTOR, KCNQ2, MEF2C, and TSC1 (n = 1). We confirmed the functional impact of a novel truncating mutation in the MTOR gene (c.7570C > T, p.Gln2524Ter) that disrupted neuronal migration in a mouse model. The diagnostic yield was higher in patients with ID/DD or childhood-onset seizures. We also identified additional candidate variants in 20 patients that could be reassessed by further studies. SIGNIFICANCE: Our findings underscore the clinical utility of gene panel sequencing in adult epilepsy patients suspected of having genetic etiology, especially those with ID/DD or early-onset seizures. Gene panel sequencing could not only lead to genetic diagnosis in a substantial portion of adult epilepsy patients but also inform more precise therapeutic decisions based on their genetic background. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of gene panel sequencing in adults with epilepsy, revealing pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in 13.0% of patients. Higher diagnostic yields were observed in those with neurodevelopmental disorders or childhood-onset seizures. Additionally, we have shown that expanding genetic studies into adult patients would uncover new types of pathogenic variants for epilepsy, contributing to the advancement of precision medicine for individuals with epilepsy. In conclusion, our results highlight the practical value of employing gene panel sequencing in adult epilepsy patients, particularly when genetic etiology is clinically suspected.

The amyloid cascade hypothesis suggests that amyloid beta (Aß) contributes to initiating subsequent tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the underlying mechanisms through which Aß contributes to tau uptake and propagation remain poorly understood. Here, we show that preexisting amyloid pathology accelerates the uptake of extracellular tau into neurons. Using quantitative proteomic analysis of endocytic vesicles, we reveal that Aß induces the internalization of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). Extracellular tau binds to the extracellular domain of FGFR3 and is internalized by the FGFR3 ligand, fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). Aß accelerates FGF2 secretion from neurons, thereby inducing the internalization of tau-attached FGFR3. Knockdown of FGFR3 in the hippocampus reduces tau aggregation by decreasing tau uptake and improving memory function in AD model mice. These data suggest FGFR3 in neurons as a novel tau receptor and a key mediator of Aß-induced tau uptake in AD.

Microbial interactions impact the functioning of microbial communities. However, microbial interactions within host-associated communities remains poorly understood. Here, we report that the beneficiary rhizobacterium Niallia sp. RD1 requires the helper Pseudomonas putida H3 for bacterial growth and beneficial interactions with the plant host. In the absence of the helper H3 strain, the Niallia sp. RD1 strain exhibited weak respiration and elongated cell morphology without forming bacterial colonies. A transposon mutant of H3 in a gene encoding succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase displayed much attenuated support of RD1 colony formation. Through subsequent addition of succinate to the media, we found that succinate serves as a public good that supports RD1 growth. Comparative genome analysis highlighted that RD1 lacked the gene for sufficient succinate, suggesting its evolution as a beneficiary of succinate biosynthesis. The syntrophic interaction between RD1 and H3 efficiently protected tomato plants from bacterial wilt and promoted the tomato growth. The addition of succinate to the medium restored complex II-dependent respiration in RD1 and facilitated the cultivation of various bacterial isolates from the rhizosphere. Taken together, we delineate energy auxotrophic beneficiaries ubiquitous in the microbial community, and these beneficiaries could benefit host plants with the aid of helpers in the rhizosphere.

BACKGROUND: Between July 2, 2021, and September 20, 2022, a Mycobacterium bovis outbreak occurred among exhibition animals at a zoo in the Republic of Korea. This study was conducted to assess the likelihood of M. bovis transmission to human contacts through a contact investigation and to implement preventive treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). METHODS: In this descriptive study, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency conducted a contact investigation, which included interviews, interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) tests, and chest X-rays. Contacts underwent IGRA testing on 2 occasions: initial testing of 29 contacts (15 in the first cluster of infection and 14 in the second cluster) and follow-up testing of the 15 contacts in the first cluster. RESULTS: The study included 29 participants, 18 of whom were male (62.1%) and 11 female (37.9%). The mean participant age was 37.3 years (standard deviation, 9.6 years). In the initial IGRA tests, 6 of the 29 participants tested positive, indicating a prevalence of 20.7%. Following prolonged exposure, 1 additional positive case was detected in follow-up testing, raising the prevalence of LTBI to 24.1%. None of the contacts had active tuberculosis. Among the 7 individuals with positive results, 2 (28.6%) underwent treatment for LTBI. CONCLUSION: This study faced challenges in confirming the transmission of M. bovis infection from infected animals to humans in the Republic of Korea. Nevertheless, adopting a One Health approach necessitates the implementation of surveillance systems and infection control protocols, particularly for occupational groups at high risk of exposure.

Objectives: No study has yet analyzed risk factors to determine whether students with confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections may affect students at neighboring schools. Therefore, this study aimed to determine risk factors for COVID-19 transmission among schools within a community in the Republic of Korea. Methods: An epidemiological investigation was conducted among 696 students and school staff members at 3 schools where COVID-19 clusters began on October 15, 2021. Interviews, visit history surveys, a facility risk assessment, and closed-circuit television were used to identify risk factors. The statistical significance of risk factors was also evaluated. Results: We confirmed 129 cases (18.5%) among the individuals exposed to COVID-19 at the 3 schools, many of whom had a history of visiting the same multi-use facilities. The odds ratio of having visited multi-use facilities such as karaoke rooms was 1.90 (95% confidence interval, 1.03-3.50); the number of visits to a karaoke room and the visit durations were significantly higher among confirmed cases than non-confirmed cases (p=0.02 and p=0.03, respectively). Conclusion: Having a history of visiting karaoke rooms often and spending a long time there were risk factors for COVID-19 infection and inter-school transmission. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the status of multi-use facilities frequently visited by adolescents and consider incorporating them into the scope of school quarantine to prevent infectious diseases at schools in a community.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) possess the advantage of ensuring safety while simultaneously maximizing energy density, making them suitable for next-generation battery models. In particular, sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs) are viewed as promising candidates for ASSB electrolytes due to their excellent ionic conductivity. However, a limitation exists in the form of interfacial side reactions occurring between the SSEs and cathode active materials (CAMs), as well as the generation of sulfide-based gases within the SSE. These issues lead to a reduction in the capacity of CAMs and an increase in internal resistance within the cell. To address these challenges, cathode composite materials incorporating zinc oxide (ZnO) are fabricated, effectively reducing various side reactions occurring in CAMs. Acting as a semiconductor, ZnO helps mitigate the rapid oxidation of the solid electrolyte facilitated by an electronic pathway, thereby minimizing side reactions, while maintaining electron pathways to the active material. Additionally, it absorbs sulfide-based gases, thus protecting the lithium ions within CAMs. In this study, the mass spectrometer is employed to observe gas generation phenomena within the ASSB cell. Furthermore, a clear elucidation of the side reactions occurring at the cathode and the causes of capacity reduction in ASSB are provided through density functional theory calculations.

Purpose To evaluate the preoperative risk factors in patients with pathologic IIIA N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who underwent upfront surgery and to evaluate the prognostic value of new N subcategories. Materials and Methods Patients with pathologic stage IIIA N2 NSCLC who underwent upfront surgery in a single tertiary center from January 2015 to April 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Each patient's clinical N (cN) was assigned to one of six subcategories (cN0, cN1a, cN1b, cN2a1, cN2a2, and cN2b) based on recently proposed N descriptors. Cox regression analysis was used to identify the significant prognostic factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). Results A total of 366 patients (mean age ± SD, 62.0 years ± 10.1; 202 male patients [55%]) were analyzed. The recurrence rate was 55% (203 of 366 patients) over a median follow-up of 37.3 months. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that cN (hazard ratios [HRs] for cN1 and cN2b compared with cN0, 1.66 [95% CI: 1.11, 2.48] and 2.11 [95% CI: 1.32, 3.38], respectively) and maximum lymph node (LN) size at N1 station (≥12 mm; HR, 1.62 [95% CI: 1.15, 2.29]), in addition to clinical T category (HR, 1.51 [95% CI: 1.14, 1.99]), were independent prognostic factors for RFS. For OS, clinical N subcategories (cN1, cN2a2, and cN2b vs cN0; HRs, 1.91 [95% CI: 1.11, 3.27], 1.89 [95% CI: 1.13, 2.18], and 2.02 [95% CI: 1.07, 3.80], respectively) and LN size at N1 station (HR, 1.75 [95% CI: 1.12, 2.71]) were independent prognostic factors. For clinical N1, OS was further stratified according to LN size (log-rank test, P < .001). Conclusion Assessing the proposed N subcategories by reporting single versus multistation involvement of N2 disease and maximum size of metastatic LN, reflecting metastatic burden, at preoperative CT may offer useful prognostic information for planning optimal treatment strategies. Long-term societal prosperity depends on addressing the world's energy and environmental problems, and photocatalysis has emerged as a viable remedy. Improving the efficiency of photocatalytic processes is fundamentally achieved by optimizing the effective utilization of solar energy and enhancing the efficient separation of photogenerated charges. It has been demonstrated that the fabrication of III-V semiconductor-based photocatalysts is effective in increasing solar light absorption, long-term stability, large-scale production and promoting charge transfer. This focused review explores on the current developments in III-V semiconductor materials for solar-powered photocatalytic systems. The review explores on various subjects, including the advancement of III-V semiconductors, photocatalytic mechanisms, and their uses in H2 conversion, CO2 reduction, environmental remediation, and photocatalytic oxidation and reduction reactions. In order to design heterostructures, the review delves into basic concepts including solar light absorption and effective charge separation. It also highlights significant advancements in green energy systems for water splitting, emphasizing the significance of establishing eco-friendly systems for CO2 reduction and hydrogen production. The main purpose is to produce hydrogen through sustainable and ecologically friendly energy conversion. The review intends to foster the development of greener and more sustainable energy source by encouraging researchers and developers to focus on practical applications and advancements in solar-powered photocatalysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to provide the basic data needed to estimate future urologist supply and demand by applying various statistical models related to healthcare utilization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from multiple sources, including the Yearbook of Health and Welfare Statistics, Korean Hospital Association, Korean Medical Association, and the Korean Urological Association, were used for supply estimation. Demand estimation incorporated data on both clinical and non-clinical urologists, along with future population estimates. In-and-out moves and demographic methods were employed for supply estimation, while the Bureau of Health Professions model was utilized for demand estimation. Supply estimation assumptions included fixed resident quotas, age-specific death rates, migration rates, and retirement age considerations. Demand estimation assumptions included combining clinical and nonclinical urologist demands, adjusting population size for age-related healthcare usage variations. Urologist productivity was determined by adjusting productivity levels to 100%, 90%, and 80% of the base year based on actual clinical practice volumes. RESULTS: Estimations of both demand and supply consistently indicate an oversupply of urologists until 2025, followed by an expected shortage by 2035 owing to increased deaths and retirements attributed to the aging urologist population. This shortage becomes more pronounced when employing more reliable models, such as logit or ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average), underscoring the growing need for urologists in the future. CONCLUSIONS: All estimation models estimated an oversupply of urologists until 2025, transitioning to a deficit due to reduced supply thereafter. However, considering potential unaccounted factors, greater effort is needed for accurate predictions and corresponding measures.

Solution-based processing of van der Waals (vdW) one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) materials is an effective strategy to obtain high-quality molecular chains or atomic sheets in a large area with scalability. In this work, quasi-1D vdW Ta2Pt3Se8 was exfoliated via liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) to produce a stably dispersed Ta2Pt3Se8 nanowire solution. In order to screen the optimal exfoliation solvent, nine different solvents were employed with different total surface tensions and polar/dispersive (P/D) component (P/D) ratios. The LPE behavior of Ta2Pt3Se8 was elucidated by matching the P/D ratios between Ta2Pt3Se8 and the applied solvent, resulting in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as an optimal solvent owing to the well-matched total surface tension and P/D ratio. Subsequently, Ta2Pt3Se8 nanowire thin films are manufactured via vacuum filtration using a Ta2Pt3Se8/NMP dispersion. Then, gas sensing devices are fabricated onto the Ta2Pt3Se8 nanowire thin films, and gas sensing property toward NO2 is evaluated at various thin-film thicknesses. A 50 nm thick Ta2Pt3Se8 thin-film device exhibited a percent response of 25.9% at room temperature and 32.4% at 100 °C, respectively. In addition, the device showed complete recovery within 14.1 min at room temperature and 3.5 min at 100 °C, respectively.
