RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Sick leave is a major negative economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2021, the Integrated Benefits Institute reported that employers spent a total of US $50.5 billion for workers absent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While vaccination programs lowered the number of severe illness and hospitalizations worldwide, the number of side effects following vaccination against COVID-19 were high. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of vaccination on the probability of taking sick leave in the week following vaccination. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study population was comprised of all personnel serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) between October 7, 2020, and October 3, 2021, (a total of 52 weeks) who were vaccinated with at least one dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine. Data on Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel sick leaves were retrieved and the probability of a "post-vaccination week sick leave" and a "regular (not post-vaccination week) sick leave" were analyzed. An additional analysis was performed to determine whether winter-related diseases or the sex of the personnel affected the probability of taking sick leave. RESULTS: The probability of taking sick leave in a post-vaccination week was significantly higher than the probability of taking sick leave in a regular week (8.45% vs. 4.3%, respectively, p < 0.01). The increased probability remained unchanged after analysis of sex-related and winter disease-related variables. CONCLUSIONS: Given the major effect of vaccination against COVID-19 by BNT162b2 vaccine on the probability of taking sick leave, when medically feasible, the timing of the vaccination should be considered by medical, military, and industrial authorities with the intent to minimize the effect on overall national economy and safety.

RESUMO

A metallocarboxypeptidase produced by Streptomyces bikiniensis 27 strain (VKPM Ac-1783) (CPSb) was purified and characterized. The enzyme cleaves both basic and hydrophobic C-terminal amino acid residues from synthetic peptides, that is, it possesses specificity of mammalian carboxypeptidases A and B. The enzyme also hydrolyzes peptides bearing glutamic acid at the C-end. CPSb exhibits its maximal activity at pH 7.0-7.6 and 55°C. The nucleotide sequence encoding the mature CPSb in S. bikiniensis 27 (VKPM Ac-1783) genome (Accession No. GU362077) was determined. It is shown that the primary structure of the mature enzyme has a moderate degree of identity with orthologs from Streptomyces griseus (79% identity) and Streptomyces avermitilis (85% identity).

RESUMO

Broomrapes (Orobanche spp.) are obligatory parasitic weeds that infect roots of vegetables and field crops worldwide, resulting in severe damage. Orobanche crenata Forsk is common in agricultural fields in the Mediterranean Basin, Southern Europe, and the Middle East and is known as an important scourge of grain and forage legumes and of some Apiaceous crops such as carrot (Daucus carota L.) and celery (Apium graveolens L.) (3,4). To our knowledge, in this note, we report for the first time on Anemone coronaria L. (Ranunculaceae) as a new host for O. crenata and this is also the first report of Orobanche parasitism on a geophytic crop. Anemone (Anemone coronaria L.) is a high-value ornamental crop, which is commercially grown for cut flowers. Four anemone cultivars (Meron Red, Galil White, Jerusalem Blue, and Jerusalem Pink) were planted in September 2006 in a 2-ha field in Israel. The previous crop, broad bean (Vicia faba L.), was heavily infected during 2005 by O. crenata. In February 2007, O. crenata parasitized the anemone plants and developed numerous fertile flowering stalks throughout the field. The four anemone cultivars were equally infected by the parasite. Additional flowering stalks were still emerging on anemone plants during July 2007. Washing the root system clearly verified direct connection between the parasite and anemone roots. The parasite species was identified morphologically after Flora Europea (1) and Flora Palaestina (2). In addition, the stem had the fragrance typical of O. crenata. Neither symptoms nor visible qualitative or quantitative damage could be detected on infected anemone plants compared with noninfected plants. However, anemone appears to be an alternate host on which O. crenata can produce additional seed for the parasite seed bank. References: (1) A. O. Chater and D. A. Webb. Orobanche. RESUMO

The strain B-1166 differs from the other strains of Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. finitimus because it has two crystal types with different localization in the sporulating cell, i.e., inside and outside of exosporium membrane. Two dissociants of the strain were obtained containing only one of the crystal types. The initial strain produces at least three various delta-endotoxins (Fin2, Fin3, and Fin5) differing from all other known entomocidal proteins; Fin2 and Fin3 are similar to each other but differ from Fin5. Both crystal types contain the same endotoxins (Fin2, Fin3, and Fin5). In the B-1166 strain the site of crystal deposition is not determined by their protein composition.

RESUMO

P33 protein was isolated from the cell walls of Candida utilis. Homology between P33 and Bgl2p proteins from the cell walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was shown. The important role of these proteins in molecular organization of yeast cell walls was demonstrated using trypsin proteolysis and the "gene disruption" method.

RESUMO

A comparative electrochemical and gravimetric evaluation of the corrosive effect of disinfectant and sterilizing media on medical materials has found that presently applied solutions have a considerable corrosive effect. New compositions on the basis of peroxocompounds of carbonic acids proved more promising for the treatment of medical instruments.

RESUMO

A model of the phenomenon of selectivity of antineoplastic phase-specific preparations in leukemia, based on the assumption that any proliferating cells are equally sensitive to the action of such preparations, is suggested. Therefore, selectivity, the concept and fundamental significance of which were formulated and substantiated by the authors earlier, can be expressed in terms of the proliferative pathways of the normal and leukemic populations, the ratio between which thus plays the deciding role in the selection of the optimum system of therapy. The concept of maximum selectivity, which is a convenient numerical characteristic of a preparation, was introduced. A comparative quantitative analysis was made of a number of antineoplastic preparations (vinblastine, vincristine, amethopterin, arabinosylcytosine, azaserine); it showed that the conclusions of the model do not contradict the experimental data.
