RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the incidence of dry eye disease (DED) and relevant risk factors among patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant. METHODS: This cross-sectional, observational analysis included 993 patients with corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treated at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) Fangcang Shelter Hospital, from April 10 to May 26, 2022. Totally 944 uninfected control participants were recruited. All participants completed ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaires, and DED symptoms were determined using OSDI scores. The demographic characteristics, length of hospital stay and in nasopharyngeal swabs were performed using questionnaires. SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection was confirmed by nucleic acid-based detection in nasopharyngeal swabs using a 2019-nCoV nucleic acid detection kit. The risk factors for DED symptoms among patients with COVID-19 and control participants were determined by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Patients with COVID-19 showed a higher incidence of DED than controls (64.9% vs 55.1%, P<0.001). SARS-CoV-2 infection [odds ratios (ORs) (95%CI): 1.271 (1.038, 1.556)], use of contact lenses [ORs (95%CI): 9.350 (3.676, 23.783)], history of corneal refractive surgery [ORs (95%CI): 2.047 (1.494, 2.804)], poor sleep quality [ORs (95%CI): 2.657 (2.029, 3.480)], and video display terminal (VDT) use for more than 8h per day [ORs (95%CI): 6.348 (4.720, 8.538)] were found to be risk factors for DED symptoms in patients with COVID-19 as well as controls. For patients with COVID-19, the length of hospital stay [ORs (95%CI): 1.196 (1.134, 1.262)], use of contact lenses [ORs (95%CI): 20.423 (2.680, 155.632)], history of corneal refractive surgery [ORs (95%CI): 2.166 (1.321, 3.553)], poor sleep quality [ORs (95%CI): 3.650 (2.381, 5.597)], and VDT use for more than 8h per day [ORs (95%CI): 7.740 (4.918, 12.180)] were significant risk factors for DED symptoms. CONCLUSION: Patients with COVID-19 are more prone to develop symptomatic DED. SARS-CoV-2 infection and length of hospital stay are important risk factors for DED symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Nerve growth factor (NGF) and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) are well-known neurotrophic factors and widely used in the clinical treatment for its promotion effect on peripheral nerve regeneration. And they were also recommended for the acute paralytic strabismus treatment. However, whether the NGF and CNTF have protective effect for the extraocular muscles of acute paralytic strabismus patients is still poorly understood. PURPOSE: In this study, we want to evaluate the biological function of NGF and CNTF on the extraocular muscle cells and reveale the regulation mechanism behind it. METHODS: Firstly, the relative expression of ngf and cntf was assessed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Then, the influence of NGF and CNTF on the extraocular muscle cell proliferation was determined by CCK-8. The inflammatory response in muscle cells after NGF and CNTF treatment was evaluated by ELISA and ROS detection. In addition to this, the up-stream regulation of the ngf and cntf expression was also studied. The TargetScan was used for the predication of potential miRNAs targeting with ngf and cntf 30-UTR, which is soon confirmed by luciferase activity assay. RESULTS: all the results in this research indicated that NGF and CNTF could promote the muscle cell proliferation and inhibit the inflammatory levels, then exert protective effect on the muscle cell function. CONCLUSION: It was conceivable that let 7-5p was the up-stream regulator of ngf and cntf, and let 7-5p might serve as a potential molecular target for acute paralytic strabismus treatment.

Human osteosarcoma (HOS) is the most common malignancy in children and adolescents and has a heterogeneous presentation and high mortality. Previous studies have shown that microRNAs contribute to RNA silencing and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Here, we showed that significantly increased expression of miR-765 with or without CDDP (Cisplatin) down-regulates APE1 expression and angiogenesis-related markers (VEGF, FGF2, TGFß, and CD34). Further investigation showed that miR-765 modulates osteosarcoma cell migration and angiogenesis following treatment with cisplatin in vitro and in vivo. MiR-765 increases the anti-angiogenic effect of CDDP in human osteosarcoma. Elucidation of the mechanism of the miR-765-APE1 axis in tumor progression of HOS will be beneficial in identifying biomarkers and therapeutic target of osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: To compare the efficacy and toxicity of irinotecan-based chemotherapy (IBC) and non-irinotecan-based chemotherapy (NIBC) as first-line treatment for stage IIIB/IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), abstracts from the annual meetings of ASCO and the ESMO up to 2014 were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared IBC with NIBC. Data on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were meta-analyzed to provide hazard ratios (HRs), while data on overall response rate (ORR) and frequencies of toxicity were meta-analyzed to provide relative risk ratios (RR). RESULTS: Seven RCTs (6 RCTs from Asian population and 1 from non-Asian population) involving 1473 patients with previously untreated stage IIIB/IV NSCLC were included in the meta-analysis. IBC and NIBC were associated with similar ORR (RR: 1.08, 95%CI: 0.94 to 1.23, p=0.30), OS (HR: 0.97, 95%CI: 0.88 to 1.07, p=0.56), and PFS (HR: 1.02, 95%CI: 0.97 to 1.08, p=0.38). However, the subgroups between Asian and non-Asian patients differed significantly in OS (HR: 0.94 vs 1.87, p=0.007). There was no significant difference for hematological toxicity (RR: 0.79, 95%CI: 0.60 to 1.04, p=0.09) and significant worse for non-hematological toxicity (RR: 2.28, 95%CI: 1.60 to 3.24, p<0.001), when IBC compared to NIBC. CONCLUSIONS: As the available evidence suggests that IBC and NIBC are equivalent in terms of ORR, PFS, OS, at least in Asian patients, we recommend that IBC be considered as a first-line treatment in Asian patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC. However, the non-hematological toxicity of IBC must be considered.

Using nationwide, 7-year population-based data for 1997-2003, we examined marital status to see if it predicted suicide among the ethnic Chinese population of Taiwan. Using cause of death data, with a case-control design, two groups-total adult suicide deaths, n = 17,850, the study group, and adult deaths other than suicide, n = 71,400 (randomly selected from age, sex, and geographic region matched controls, four per suicide)-were studied. Using multiple logistic regression analysis including age-marital status interaction, adjusted estimates show divorced status to be the most detrimental for suicide propensity, with males showing stronger effect size. Females never married, aged below 35 and 65-plus, and widowed 65-plus had lower suicide odds.
