RESUMO

This study aims to compare the effects of mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) and bone grafting on the facial symmetry of children with Pruzansky-Kaban type IIB and III craniofacial microsomia (CFM). Medical records and three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) data of CFM patients who had primarily undergone MDO and bone grafting were collected. A retrospective analysis of pre-and post-operative 3D imaging data was conducted to compare the improvement rate in facial symmetry between the two groups based on occlusal cant, affected/unaffected ramus height ratio and chin point deviation. The data were tested for normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test. When the data followed a normal distribution, a paired sample t-test was employed for the comparison between preoperative and postoperative data. When the data did not follow a normal distribution, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired samples was used for preoperative and postoperative comparison. The study included 18 children with type IIB and III CFM, 11 in the MDO group and 7 in the bone grafting group. In the MDO group, postoperative Gn-FH and Gn-Cor distances increased significantly, whereas the postoperative Gn-Mid distance decreased significantly. Occlusal cant decreased significantly and ramus height affected/unaffected ratio increased significantly after MDO. In the bone graft group, there was no statistically significant difference in the postoperative ratios of chin deviation, occlusal cant, and ramus height affected/unaffected compared to the preoperative values. Compared to bone grafting, MDO can significantly enhance ramus height ratio, level occlusal plane, and centralize the chin point among patients with CFM. Furthermore, MDO achieves superior enhancements in facial symmetry.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in patients with craniofacial microsomia (CFM) through polysomnography (PSG) and the relationship with the severity of CFM. METHODS: This study reviewed patients of CFM with pre-operative PSG data between January 2005 and September 2023. Patients were grouped according to the Pruzansky-Kaban classification. OSA was diagnosed and severity was assessed by the obstructive apnea-hypopnea index. The Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire was used to investigate OSA-related signs and symptoms. The χ 2 test and Fisher's exact test were used to compare between groups. Univariate logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with OSA. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: A total of 121 patients with CFM were included in the study with 3 bilateral and 118 unilateral patients. In total, 86 patients (71.07%) were diagnosed with OSA. The prevalence of OSA in type IIa, type IIb and type III was 72.97%, 78.33%, and 47.62%. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of OSA between type IIa and type IIb (p > .05). The difference in the prevalence of OSA between type III and type II was statistically significant (p < .05). Snoring was the most common symptom among the patients of CFM with OSA. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with CFM have a higher incidence of OSA based on PSG in type II and type III patients. The incidence of OSA did not correlate positively with the severity of CFM, with type III patients having certain particularities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Progressive hemifacial atrophy often causes lip vermilion defects in patients. In this study, we described a one-stage repair method for lip defects in progressive hemifacial atrophy using a lip vermilion mucosal flap or combined dermal fat flap graft. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with progressive hemifacial atrophy with lip vermilion defects from 2010 to 2022 were included in this study. Based on the severity and location of the patient's lip defect, a lip vermilion mucosal flap was designed and transferred to the lip defect or combined with a hip dermal fat flap for one-stage repair of the lip morphology. Lip morphology and function of patients were followed up after surgery. RESULTS: A total of 22 patients were enrolled in this study, including 15 patients with lip defects on the upper lip alone and 7 patients with both upper and lower lip defects. Follow-up six months to two years postoperatively, all patients recovered uneventfully without complications. The repaired lips of the patient had a full and symmetrical morphology with no visible scarring. Two patients experienced transient dysesthesia of the lips postoperatively and both returned to normal after three months. All patients had good lip closure with normal dietary and speech function. CONCLUSIONS: The method we described for repairing lip defects in progressive hemifacial atrophy can achieve satisfactory aesthetic and functional lip results. The distinct advantage of this approach is that the patients undergo only one-stage operation and it can be used to repair both upper and lower lip defects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Echocardiography (ECHO) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to observe changes in the left ventricular structure in patients with breast and gastric cancer after 6 cycles of chemotherapy. Based on the observed values, we aimed to evaluate the cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines in cancer patients and to analyze the consistency of the two examination methods in assessing left ventricular function after chemotherapy. METHODS: From January 2020 to January 2022, the data of 80 patients with malignant tumors who received anthracycline chemotherapy (breast cancer, n = 40; gastric cancer, n = 40) and 40 healthy volunteers (Control group) were retrospectively collected. Serum high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) levels were detected by an automatic immunoassay analyzer. Left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV), left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were measured by cardiac MRI and 2-dimensional ECHO using the biplane Simpson's method. RESULTS: Compared with baseline values, serum high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) levels were significantly increased in patients with breast cancer and gastric cancer after 6 cycles of chemotherapy (P < 0.05). In addition, LVEDV, LVESV and LVEF measured with MRI were higher than those detected by ECHO in cancer patients after 6 cycles of chemotherapy (P < 0.05). And the Bland-Altman plot analysis showed that LVEDV, LVESV and LVEF measured by the two examination methods were in good agreement. CONCLUSION: Breast and gastric cancer patients exhibited elevated levels of hs-cTnT after 6 cycles of chemotherapy, indicating potential cardiotoxicity. Additionally, cardiac MRI and 2-dimensional ECHO showed good agreement in assessing left ventricular function, with ECHO tending to underestimate volume measurements compared to MRI.

RESUMO

Lymphoma is one of the most curable types of cancer. However, drug resistance is the main challenge faced in lymphoma treatment. Peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) is the rate-limiting enzyme in fatty acid ß-oxidation. Deregulation of ACOX1 has been linked to peroxisomal disorders and carcinogenesis in the liver. Currently, there is no information about the function of ACOX1 in lymphoma. In this study, we found that upregulation of ACOX1 promoted proliferation in lymphoma cells, while downregulation of ACOX1 inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis. Additionally, overexpression of ACOX1 increased resistance to doxorubicin, while suppression of ACOX1 expression markedly potentiated doxorubicin-induced apoptosis. Interestingly, downregulation of ACOX1 promoted mitochondrial location of Bad, reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and provoked apoptosis by activating caspase-9 and caspase-3 related apoptotic pathway. Overexpression of ACOX1 alleviated doxorubicin-induced activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 and decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential. Importantly, downregulation of ACOX1 increased p73, but not p53, expression. p73 expression was critical for apoptosis induction induced by ACOX1 downregulation. Also, overexpression of ACOX1 significantly reduced stability of p73 protein thereby reducing p73 expression. Thus, our study indicated that suppression of ACOX1 could be a novel and effective approach for treatment of lymphoma. [BMB Reports 2019; 52(9): 566-571].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lymphoma is one of the most common hematologic malignancy. Drug resistance is the main obstacle faced in lymphoma treatment. Cancer stem cells are considered as the source of tumor recurrence, metastasis and drug resistance. The ß-Asarone, a low-toxicity compound from the traditional medical herb Acorus calamus, has been shown to act as an anti-cancer reagent in various cancer types. However, the anti-cancer activities of ß-Asarone in lymphoma have not been shown. METHODS: Cell counting assay was used to evaluate Raji cell proliferation. CCK8 assay was used to evaluate the cell viability. Annexin-V/PI staining and flow cytometry analysis were used to evaluate apoptosis. ALDEFLUOR assay was used to evaluate the stem-like population. Luciferase reporter assay was used to examine the activation of NF-κB signaling. Western blot and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to determine the expression of interested genes. RESULTS: We showed that ß-Asarone inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in Raji lymphoma cells in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, ß-Asarone functioned as a sensitizer of doxorubicin and resulted in synergistic effects on inhibition of proliferation and induction of apoptosis when combined with doxorubicin treatment. Interestingly, we found that ß-Asarone also reduced the stem-like population of Raji lymphoma cells in a dose-dependent manner, and suppressed the expression of c-Myc and Bmi1. Importantly, ß-Asarone abolished doxorubicin-induced enrichment of the stem-like population. In the mechanism study, we revealed that ß-Asarone suppressed not only basal NF-κB activity but also Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) induced NF-κB activity. Moreover, blocking NF-κB signaling inactivation was critical for ß-Asarone induced apoptosis and inhibition of proliferation, but not for the effect on ß-Asarone reduced stem-like population. In fact, ß-Asarone suppressed stem-like population by destabilizing Bmi1 via a proteasome-mediated mechanism. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggested the application of ß-Asarone to lower the toxic effect of doxorubicin and increase the sensitivity of doxorubicin in clinical treatment. More importantly, our data revealed a novel role of ß-Asarone which could be used to eliminate stem-like population in lymphoma, implying that ß-Asarone might reduce relapse and drug resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Transcriptome and proteome analyses on fruit pulp from the blood orange 'Zaohong' and the navel orange 'twenty-first century' were performed to study Citrus sinensis quality-related molecular changes during consecutive developmental periods, including young fruit, fruit-coloring onset and fruit delayed-harvest for two months, during which fruit remained on the trees. RESULTS: The time-course analysis for the fruit developmental periods indicated a complex, dynamic gene expression pattern, with the numbers of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the two cultivars being 119, 426 and 904 at the three continuous stages tested during fruit development and ripening. The continuous increase in total soluble solids over the course of fruit development was correlated with up-regulated sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) transcription levels in both cultivars. Eleven differentially expressed genes between the two cultivars involved in the flavonoid pathway were significantly enriched at the onset of the fruit-coloring stage when anthocyanins were detected in blood orange alone. Among 5185 proteins, 65 up-regulated and 29 down-regulated proteins were co-expressed with their cognate mRNAs with significant transcription and protein expression levels when the fruits from the two cultivars were compared at the fruit delayed-harvest stage. Additionally, important genes participating in the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) shunt were activated in blood orange at two significant expression levels in the fruit delayed-harvest stage. Thus, organic acids in fruit continuously decreased during this stage. CONCLUSIONS: This research was the first to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the differentially expressed genes involved in anthocyanin, sucrose and citrate metabolism at the transcriptome and proteome levels in C. sinensis, especially during the fruit delayed-harvest stage.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To understand the Oncomelania hupensis snail distribution in the working areas of Yangtze River hydrologic agencies located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in 2016, so as to provide the evidence for assessing the risk of schistosome infection of hydrological workers and establishing the control strategies. METHODS: The suspicious environments with O. hupensis snails in the above working areas were selected as study areas, and the snail situation was surveyed by the system sampling method combined with the environmental sampling method. The survey data were collected and analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Totally 19 working areas from 17 hydrological agencies were selected as the investigation sites, among which, 10 working areas from 9 agencies were found with O. hupensis snail distribution. The constituent ratio of the areas with snails reached to 38.81% of the investigation areas, the occurrence rate of frames with snails was 3.08%, and the average density of living snails was 0.07 /0.1 m2. By comparison, the average density of living snails and occurrence rate of frames with snails in hydrological agencies under the jurisdiction of the Middle Reaches Administrative Bureau were the most serious among three administrative bureaus of the Yangtze River Water Resources Commission. CONCLUSIONS: There are various degrees of O. hupensis breeding in the working areas of hydrological agencies located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the hydrological workers are facing with the risk of schistosome infection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively evaluate the diagnostic value of gemstone spectral CT in thyroid disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 123 patients with thyroid diseases were enrolled in the retrospective study. All the patients underwent spectral CT scan, and 39 of them underwent dual-phase enhanced scan. Iodine concentration (IC) and normalized IC (NIC) were compared between benign and malignant nodules. The optimal threshold to predict malignancy was obtained by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). Multivariate ROC analysis was performed to evaluate the efficacy of combining the IC (NIC) and conventional morphological characteristics. RESULTS: Ten diffuse diseases and 113 nodular diseases were confirmed by clinical laboratory examination and histopathology. In total, 122 nodules (87 benign and 35 malignant) were detected, 41 nodules in enhanced cases. The IC and NIC_{VP} of malignant nodules were significantly lower than benign nodules in noncontrast and venous phase (VP) (P=0.000). The optimal IC and NIC_{VP} threshold was 0.68 mg/mL and 0.38, achieving 74.3% and 76.9% sensitivity, 66.7% and 80.0% specificity, respectively. For multivariate analysis, the area under ROC (AUC) was 0.88 and 0.94 in noncontrast and VP, respectively. Sensitivities of 77.1% and 84.6%, and specificities of 84.5% and 88.0% were achieved. CONCLUSION: Gemstone spectral CT can generally evaluate the abnormal iodine content in thyroid disease. Lower iodine can help differentiating malignant from benign nodules. A comprehensive analysis combining spectrum parameters and morphological characteristics is suggested in differential diagnosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical effects of flowable composite as a liner in treatment of wedge-shaped defects. METHODS: Three hundred and sixty teeth from 85 patients with wedge-shaped defects were studied. The self-control design was used in this study. Teeth were randomly divided into experimental group which were restored with composite resin after using flowable composite as a liner in one side, and the control group which were filled with composite resin directly in the other side. The modified USPHS/Ryge criteria were used to evaluate the treatment effects after 1 year and 3 years. SPSS12.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: There was significant difference between the 2 groups in postoperative sensitivity. The experimental group had higher successful rate than the control group. In marginal integrity, the successful rate of the experimental group was 100% after 1 year, higher than 95.65% in the control group (P<0.01). The successful rate of the experimental group was 98.56% after 3 year, higher than 92.42% in the control group (P<0.01). In postoperative sensitivity: the experimental group had no sensitive cases after 1 year, while the control group had 6 teeth with moderate sensitivity which needed to change the restoration. The experimental group was better than the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that flowable composites as a liner in restoration of wedge-shaped defects may improve the marginal integrity and reduce the postoperative sensitivity.

RESUMO

Conservation tillage (CT) has been recognized as an advanced agricultural technology that may reduce drought and improve the physical condition of soils worldwide. An increase in water infiltration and a reduction in water and wind erosion can be achieved through the use of no-tillage, minimum tillage, and residue cover. In China, CT research started with support from the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), China and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research in 1992. By the end of 1990s, CT research had expanded across China and achieved several important results. In 1999, MOA established the Conservation Tillage Research Centre (CTRC) to lead the national CT research programs in China, and since 2002 some CT demonstration projects have been established in northern China. By the end of 2008, CT has been demonstrated in 226 national and 365 provincial demonstration counties, covering more than 3 Mha. The CTRC of the MOA has established 10 sites within those counties to monitor project results. Some sites have shown consistently that the use of CT resulted in higher yields and net incomes, reduced soil erosion, and improved soil conditions. CT has been widely accepted in China and will be further adopted over wider areas as the development and highbred of indigenous no-tillage seeders.
