Cucumber is an important vegetable crop that has high nutritional and economic value and is thus favored by consumers worldwide. Exploring an accurate and fast technique for measuring the morphological traits of cucumber fruit could be helpful for improving its breeding efficiency and further refining the development models for pepo fruits. At present, several sets of measurement schemes and standards have been proposed and applied for the characterization of cucumber fruits; however, these manual methods are time-consuming and inefficient. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a cucumber fruit morphological trait identification framework and software called CucumberAI, which combines image processing techniques with deep learning models to efficiently identify up to 51 cucumber features, including 32 newly defined parameters. The proposed tool introduces an algorithm for performing cucumber contour extraction and fruit segmentation based on image processing techniques. The identification framework comprises 6 deep learning models that combine fruit feature recognition rules with MobileNetV2 to construct a decision tree for fruit shape recognition. Additionally, the framework employs U-Net segmentation models for fruit stripe and endocarp segmentation, a MobileNetV2 model for carpel classification, a ResNet50 model for stripe classification and a YOLOv5 model for tumor identification. The relationships between the image-based manual and algorithmic traits are highly correlated, and validation tests were conducted to perform correlation analyses of fruit surface smoothness and roughness, and a fruit appearance cluster analysis was also performed. In brief, CucumberAI offers an efficient approach for extracting and analyzing cucumber phenotypes and provides valuable information for future cucumber genetic improvements.

Thromboinflammation is a complex pathology associated with inflammation and coagulation. In cases of cardiovascular disease, in particular ischemia-reperfusion injury, thromboinflammation is a common complication. Increased understanding of thromboinflammation depends on an improved concept of the mechanisms of cells and proteins at the axis of coagulation and inflammation. Among these elements are activated protein C and platelets. This review summarizes the complex interactions of activated protein C and platelets regulating thromboinflammation in cardiovascular disease. By unraveling the pathways of platelets and APC in the inflammatory and coagulation cascades, this review summarizes the role of these vital mediators in the development and perpetuation of heart disease and the thromboinflammation-driven complications of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the significance of the counteracting effects of platelets and APC and their combined role in disease states.

Rosacea, a chronic inflammatory dermatological condition, is characterized by facial erythema and pustules. Recent investigations have delved into the interplay between the gut microbiota and rosacea pathogenesis, unveiling promising avenues for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we screened and isolated strains Ligilactobacillus salivarius 23-006 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei 23-008 from the feces of healthy volunteers and evaluated the intervention effects of probiotics on rosacea by constructing an LL37 induced rosacea-like mouse model. Our results showed that both L. salivarius 23-006 and L. paracasei 23-008 were probiotic strains with favourable properties. In specific, we observed that both L. salivarius 23-006 and L. paracasei 23-008 alleviated skin lesions, reduced skin inflammatory infiltrates, and decreased the expression of inflammatory factors in mice, with the combination of L. salivarius 23-006 and L. paracasei 23-008 having the most significant effect. Moreover, the combination of strains reduced the expression of cathelicidin LL37 and rosacea-associated factors by inhibiting the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB pathway. The 16S rRNA analysis showed that the combination enhanced the intestinal barrier, restored intestinal microbiota homeostasis, and up-regulated the abundance of Lactobacillus while down-regulating the abundance of Coprococcus and Oscillospira. We also explored the effects of postbiotics of L. salivarius 23-006 and L. paracasei 23-008 on rosacea. While postbiotics could also ameliorate the rosacea-like phenotype in mice via the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB pathway, the effects were not as pronounced as those observed with probiotic treatment. However, the postbiotics still enhanced the intestinal barrier, up-regulated the Lactobacillus abundance, and modulated the intestinal microbiota. In conclusion, our study revealed that L. salivarius 23-006 and L. paracasei 23-008 improved rosacea by regulating the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB pathway and intestinal microbiota, providing a theoretical basis for the treatment of rosacea.

Long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) are recognized as a significant inhibitory factor in anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW), yet they are inevitably present in FW due to lipid hydrolysis. Given their distinct synthesis mechanism from traditional anaerobic digestion, little is known about the effect of LCFAs on FW acidogenic fermentation. This study reveals that total volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production increased by 9.98 % and 4.03 % under stearic acid and oleic acid loading, respectively. Acetic acid production increased by 20.66 % under stearic acid loading compared to the control group (CK). However, the LCFA stress restricted the degradation of solid organic matter, particularly under oleic acid stress. Analysis of microbial community structure and quorum sensing (QS) indicates that LCFA stress enhanced the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and Klebsiella. In QS system, the relative abundance of luxS declined from 0.157 % to 0.116 % and 0.125 % under oleic acid and stearic acid stress, respectively. LCFA stress limited the Autoinducer-2 (AI-2) biosynthesis, suggesting that microorganisms cannot use QS to resist the LCFA stress. Metagenomic sequencing showed that LCFA stress promoted acetic acid production via the conversion of pyruvate and acetyl-CoA to acetate. Direct conversion of pyruvate to acetic acid increased by 47.23 % compared to the CK group, accounting for the enhanced acetic acid production under stearic acid loading. The abundance of ß-oxidation pathway under stearic acid loading was lower than under oleic acid loading. Overall, the stimulating direct conversion of pyruvate plays a pivotal role in enhancing acetic acid biosynthesis under stearic acid loading, providing insights into the effect of LCFA on mechanism of FW acidogenic fermentation.

BACKGROUND: Fungal periprosthetic joint infection (FPJI) is an infrequent but devastating complication that imposes a heavy burden on patients. At present, a consensus regarding the most optimal surgical option for patients with FPJI, the ideal duration of systemic antifungal treatment, and many other issues has not been reached. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed on the PubMed and Embase databases. The search criteria employed were as follows: (fungal OR candida OR mycotic) AND periprosthetic joint infection. Initially, the titles and abstracts were screened, and subsequently, studies deemed irrelevant or duplicative were eliminated. Following this, the complete texts of remaining articles were thoroughly examined. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 489 joints in 24 articles were screened out. We further extracted the demographic characteristics (age, gender, body mass index, etc.), clinical presentation, fungal species, presence of bacterial coinfection, surgical methods, systemic and local antifungal therapy, and treatment outcomes. Subgroup data were analyzed according to fungal species and bacterial coinfection. Univariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to ascertain the risk factors associated with the infection recurrence. RESULTS: A total of 506 fungi were identified within 489 joints. The most prevalent fungal species were Candida albicans (41.5%). Out of 247 joints (50.5%) presenting with concurrent fungal and bacterial infections. Among the initial surgical interventions, two-stage exchange was the most common (59.1%). The infection recurrence rates of DAIR, resection arthroplasty, two-stage, one-stage, and three-stage exchange were 81.4%, 53.1%, 47.7%, 35.0%, and 30%, respectively. The mean duration of systemic antifungal therapy was 12.8 weeks. The most common drugs used both in intravenous (55.9%) and oral therapy (84.0%) were fluconazole. The proportion of patients who used antifungal drugs after replantation (two-stage and three-stage) was 87.6%. 33.2% of cement spacer or fixed cement contained antifungal drugs, of which amphotericin B was the main choice (82.7%). FPJI caused by candida albicans (OR = 1.717, p = 0.041) and DAIR (OR = 8.433, p = 0.003) were risk factors for infection recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Two-stage exchange remains the most commonly used surgical approach. The reliability of one- and three-exchange needs further evaluation due to the small sample size. Antifungal-loaded cement spacers, and direct intra-articular injections of antimycotics after reimplatation should be strongly considered. Medication is not standardized but rather individualized according to microbiology and the status of patients.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stands as one of the most ecologically fragile and biodiversity-rich regions globally. Understanding the distribution of different taxa and their relationship with environmental factors is crucial for effective conservation and sustainable management. Polytrichaceae, a significant bryophyte family widely distributed in Tibet, displays distinct structural, morphological, and phylogenetic traits compared to other mosses. Despite its importance, the distribution of Polytrichaceae in Tibet and its correlation with environmental factors have yet to be explored. In this study, we used an optimized Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model to explore the potential suitable habitats of Polytrichaceae in Tibet, aiming to clarify their geographic distribution pattern as well as the key environmental influence factors. The model had high accuracy with an average Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.933 and True Skill Statistics (TSS) value of 0.789. The results showed that the potential suitability habitats of Polytrichaceae were mainly located in southeastern Tibet, and the low suitable, moderately suitable, and highly suitable habitats accounted for 12.53 %, 6.84 %, and 3.31 % of the total area of Tibet respectively. Unsuitable habitats were mainly located in northwestern Tibet, accounting for about 77.32 %. In Tibet, temperature factors (Mean Temperature of Coldest Quarter (Bio11) and Annual Mean Temperature (Bio1)) played a pivotal role in determining the potential suitable habitats for Polytrichaceae, and elevation, precipitation, and vegetation coverage also had an important influence. The family preferred warm, moist and densely vegetated habitats in Tibet. This study enriched our ecological understanding of bryophyte ecology in this region and provided data-driven support for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management in Tibet.

As a significant structure in activated sludge, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) hold considerable value regarding resource recovery and applications. The present study aimed to elucidate the relationship between the microbial community and the composition and properties of EPS. A biological nutrient removal (BNR) reactor was set up in the laboratory and controlled under different solid retention times (SRT), altering microbial species within the system. Then EPS was extracted from activated and analyzed by chemical and spectroscopic methods. High-throughput sequencing and metagenomic approaches were employed to investigate bacterial community and metabolic pathways. The results showed that lower SRT with a higher abundance of the family-level Proteobacteria (27.7%-53.5%) favored EPS synthesis, while another dominant group Bacteroidetes (20.0%-32.6%) may not significantly affect EPS synthesis. Furthermore, the abundance of alginates-producing bacteria including Pseudomonas spp. and Azotobacter vinelandii was only 2.53%-6.76% and 1.98%-6.34%, respectively. The alginate synthesis pathway genes Alg8 and Alg44 were also present at very low levels (0.05‱-0.11‱, 0.01‱-0.02‱, respectively). Another important gene related to alginates operons, AlgK, was absent across all the SRT-operated reactors. These findings suggest an impossible and incomplete alginate synthesis pathway within sludge. In light of these results, it can be concluded that EPS does not necessarily contain alginate components.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit outstanding catalytic activity due to their highly dispersed metal centers. Activating persulfates (PS) with SACs can generate various reactive oxygen species (ROS) to efficiently degrade emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in aqueous environments, offering unique advantages such as high reaction rates and excellent stability. This technique has been extensively researched and holds enormous potential applications. In this paper, we comprehensively elaborated on the synthesis methods of SACs and their limitations, and factors influencing the catalytic performance of SACs, including metal center characteristics, coordination environment, and types of substrates. We also analyzed practical considerations for application. Subsequently, we discussed the mechanism of SACs activating PS for EOCs degradation, encompassing adsorption processes, radical pathways, and non-radical pathways. Finally, we provide prospects and outline our vision for future research, aiming to guide advancements in applying this technique.

Objective: Serum pepsinogen (PG) is a good indicator of atrophic changes in the gastric mucosa. Gastric mucosal atrophy is a high-risk factor for gastric cancer. Serological testing for PG combined with endoscopy can help to improve gastric cancer screening. In this study, we established the reference ranges of serum PG-I, PG-II, and the PG-I/II ratio (PGR) in the Chinese population by chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Besides, in the real world, doctors are often confused by the results of different testing platforms. Thus, a comparison of methods CLIA and ELISA was performed. Methods: 2904 individuals were enrolled from six regions in China as part of the Chinese Adult Digestive Diseases Surveillance (2016) program. The individuals completed questionnaires and volunteered to undergo examinations, including gastroscopy, urea breath test, abdominal ultrasound examination and routine serologic tests. Serum was collected to measure PGs (including PG-I, PG-II and PGR) by CLIA and ELISA. Participants who were found obvious abnormalities or absent from the examinations were excluded. Ultimately, 747 healthy individuals were enrolled in this study. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to assess the distribution of variables. The Kruskal-Wallis H or Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to compare different sex, age, and geographical groups. The 95% reference ranges of PGs obtained by the two methods were established according to document CLSI-EP28-A3, with covariates of sex, age, and region. Spearman correlation analysis, linear regression analysis and allowable total error (ATE) zone analysis were utilized for comparing the two methods. Results: On overall, the 95% reference ranges of PG-I, PG-II, and PGR measured by CLIA were 23.00-110.64 ng/mL, 2.50-19.13 ng/mL, and 3.87-13.30, respectively. Meanwhile, the reference ranges of PG-I, PG-II, and PGR measured by ELISA were 36.93-205.06 ng/mL, 1.65-17.96 ng/mL, and 7.50-33.60, respectively. Both PG-I and PG-II levels measured by the two platforms were found to be influenced by sex and age. PGR measured by CLIA was influenced by age but not by sex, while PGR measured by ELISA was not affected by either age or sex. Regional factors did not significantly impact the PG results, except for PG-I detected by ELISA. Ultimately, reference ranges for PGs were established based on age and sex stratification. Additionally, the Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the correlation coefficients for PG-I, PG-II, and PGR detected by the two methods were 0.899, 0.887, and 0.777, respectively, indicating a strong correlation between the two methods. The regression equation for the PG levels detected by two methods was obtained through linear regression analysis. The ATE analysis provided a visual depiction of the consistency between the two methods, clearly indicating the poor agreement between them. Conclusion: This study established the reference ranges of PGs by strict and intact enrollment standard. In addition, the results indicated a strong linear relationship between the two methods, yet with a clear bias, which was valuable for laboratory interpretation.

All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) have attracted intense interest due to their high theoretical energy density and intrinsic safety. However, constructing durable lithium (Li) metal anodes with high cycling efficiency in ASSLSBs remains challenging due to poor interface stability. Here, a compositionally stable, self-lithiated tin (Sn)-carbon (C) composite interlayer (LSCI) between Li anode and solid-state electrolyte (SSE), capable of homogenizing Li-ion transport across the interlayer, mitigating decomposition of SSE, and enhancing electrochemical/structural stability of interface, is developed for ASSLSBs. The LSCI-mediated Li metal anode enables stable Li plating/stripping over 7000 h without Li dendrite penetration. The ASSLSBs equipped with LSCI thus exhibit excellent cycling stability of over 300 cycles (capacity retention of ≈80%) under low applied pressure (<8 MPa) and demonstrate improved rate capability even at 3C. The enhanced electrochemical performance and corresponding insights of the designed LSCI broaden the spectrum of advanced interlayers for interface manipulation, advancing the practical application of ASSLSBs.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy(DCM) is a chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that leads to cardiac damage in the later stages of the disease, and its pathogenesis is complex, involving metabolic disorders brought about by a variety of aberrant alterations such as endoplasmic reticulum stress, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, defects in cardiomyocyte Ca~(2+) transporter, and myocardial fibrosis. Currently, there is a lack of specific diagnosis and treatment in the clinic. Autophagy is a highly conserved scavenging mechanism that removes proteins, damaged organelles or foreign contaminants and converts them into energy and amino acids to maintain the stability of the intracellular environment. Inhibition of autophagy can cause harmful metabolites to accumulate in the cell, while over-activation of autophagy can disrupt normal cellular structures and cause cell death. Prolonged high glucose levels disrupt cardiomyocyte autophagy levels and exacerbate the development of DCM. The protective or detrimental effects of autophagy on cells ring true with the traditional Chinese medicine theory of healthy Qi and pathogenic Qi. Autophagy in the physiological state of the removal of intracellular substances and the generation of substances beneficial to the survival of cells is the inhibition of pathogenic Qi to help the performance of healthy Qi, so the organism is healthy. In the early stages of the disease, when autophagy is impaired and incapable of removing waste substances, pathogenic Qi is prevalent; In the later stages of the disease, excessive activation of autophagy can destroy normal cells, leading to a weakening of healthy Qi. Traditional Chinese medicine has the advantage of targeting multiple sites and pathways. Studies in recent years have confirmed that traditional Chinese medicine monomers or formulas can target autophagy, promote the restoration of autophagy levels, maintain mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis, and reduce oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in order to prevent and control DCM. This study provides a review of the relationship between autophagy and DCM and the intervention of traditional Chinese medicine in autophagy for the treatment of DCM, with a view to providing new clinical ideas and methods for the treatment of DCM with traditional Chinese medicine.

BACKGROUND: We conducted an investigation into the correlation between HOXA and associated long-noncoding RNAs, along with their clinicopathologic and prognostic features in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: A comprehensive search across multiple electronic databases, including PubMed and the Web of Science, was conducted to identify relevant studies. The association between HOXA, clinicopathologic parameters, and prognosis was assessed using relative risk (RR) and hazard ratio (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Data compilation was performed using STATA 12.0 software. RESULTS: A total of 11 trials involving 2058 patients with NSCLC were included in our study. Significant correlations were observed between HOXA-AS2 and TNM stage (III-IV) (RR=2.173, 95% CI: 1.386-5.437, P< 0.05) and HOTTIP and age (≥60-year-old) (RR=2.628, 95% CI: 1.185-5.829, P< 0.05) and non-smoking (RR=0.387, 95% CI: 0.156-0.959, P< 0.05). The combined results indicated a significant association between HOXA5 and increased overall survival (HR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.57-0.84, P < .001). Additionally, HOXA-AS2, HOXA11 and HOTTIP were identified as potential independent predictors for poorer OS (HOXA-AS2: HR =3.48, 95% CI = 1.95 to 6.21, P < 0.05; HOXA11: HR=1.39, 95%CI = 1.08 to 1.79, P < 0.05; HOTTIP: HR=2.44, 95%CI = 1.10 to 5.42, P < 0.05). The prognostic significance of HOXA1, HOXA3 and HOXA4 was uncertain (HOXA1: HR=1.40, 95% CI =0.28 to 7.06, P > 0.05; HOXA3: HR=1.20, 95% CI = 0.96 to 1.50, P > 0.05; HOXA4: HR=0.97, 95% CI = 0.77 to 1.23, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The HOXA gene family has some potential to emerge as a novel prognostic factor for NSCLC and is correlated with some clinicopathological parameters such as the TNM stage, age and smoking. However, further meticulously designed prospective studies are warranted to substantiate these findings.

Vortioxetine is a novel multimodal antidepressant, but its precise efficacy and dose-response relationship for treating different symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) is still unclear. This umbrella review aims to assess the effectiveness, tolerability, and dose-response relationship of vortioxetine across a comprehensive range of clinical features in adults with MDD, including cognition, depression, anxiety, quality of life, and side effects. We meticulously searched eight electronic databases and included systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) of vortioxetine. The methodological quality of each included SR was independently assessed using the AMSTAR2 tool. To evaluate the credibility of the evidence, we utilized the GRADE framework and the Ioannidis criteria. In total, 35 SRs with 278 MAs met the inclusion criteria and based on these studies we performed 56 MAs of interest. While vortioxetine has been consistently shown to have positive effects on various domains, the evidence regarding cognitive performance and depression symptoms is notably robust compared to placebo, despite of relatively overall low quality of evidence. Finally, a dose-response relationship was observed across all categories within the treatment range of 5-20 mg/d and a dosage of vortioxetine 20 mg/d is recommended for adult MDD patients to achieve full functional recovery.

With the successive release of the CONSORT extensions for acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, and Tuina/massage, this review aims to assess the reporting characteristics and quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) based on these specific guidelines. A comprehensive review was conducted by searching multiple databases, including Embase, Ovid MEDLINE(R), All EBM Reviews, AMED, CNKI, VIP Chinese Medical Journal Database, and Wanfang Data, for publications from January 1 to December 31, 2022. Two reviewers independently evaluated the eligibility of the records, extracted predetermined information, and assessed the reporting based on the STRICTA, STRICTOM, STRICTOC, and STRICTOTM checklists. Among the included 387 studies (acupuncture, 213; Tuina/massage, 85; moxibustion, 73; cupping, 16), the overall reporting compliance averaged 56.0%, with acupuncture leading at 62.6%, followed by cupping (60.2%), moxibustion (53.1%), and Tuina/massage (47.9%). About half of the evaluated items showed poor reporting (compliance rate < 65%). Notably, international journals demonstrated significantly higher reporting quality than Chinese journals (P < 0.05). Although acupuncture trials had relatively higher compliance rates, deficiencies persist in reporting non-pharmacological therapies of Chinese medicine, particularly in areas like treatment environment details and provider background information.

RESUMO

Energy self-circulation systems, defined as energy systems incorporating the recycling utilization of waste biomass, have been proposed to reduce greenhouse gases emissions from livestock sector. In this study, a comprehensive review of the situation and challenges of biogas utilization in the livestock industry was provided. Moreover, two technological routes were proposed for a circular livestock system combined with Powerfuels production (CP-CLS), starting from biogas combustion for power generation and steam reforming to the sustainable development path of synthesizing, storing, and utilizing Powerfuels. The self-circulation capability and comprehensive benefits of the CP-CLS life cycle was discussed, along with future application scenarios and proposed standards for Powerfuels. To realize this potential, continuous research, development, and policy support are crucial. This study envisions the next generation of energy self-circulation systems, which expects to reduce the negative effect of livestock industry on climate change and promote sustainable development.

Gastrochilus is an orchid genus containing about 70 species in tropical and subtropical Asia with high morphological diversity. The phylogenetic relationships among this genus have not been fully resolved, and the plastome evolution has not been investigated either. In this study, five plastomes of Gastrochilus were newly reported, and sixteen plastomes of Gastrochilus were used to conduct comparative and phylogenetic analyses. Our results showed that the Gastrochilus plastomes ranged from 146,183 to 148,666 bp, with a GC content of 36.7-36.9%. There were 120 genes annotated, consisting of 74 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. No contraction and expansion of IR borders, gene rearrangements, or inversions were detected. Additionally, the repeat sequences and codon usage bias of Gastrochilus plastomes were highly conserved. Twenty hypervariable regions were selected as potential DNA barcodes. The phylogenetic relationships within Gastrochilus were well resolved based on the whole plastome, especially among main clades. Furthermore, both molecular and morphological data strongly supported Haraella retrocalla as a member of Gastrochilus (G. retrocallus).

A previous study showed that the length of the foreskin plays a role in the risk of sexually transmitted infections and chronic prostatitis, which can lead to poor quality of sexual life. Here, the association between foreskin length and sexual dysfunction was evaluated. A total of 5700 participants were recruited from the andrology clinic at The First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei, China). Clinical characteristics, including foreskin length, were collected, and sexual function was assessed by the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) questionnaires. Men with sexual dysfunction were more likely to have redundant foreskin than men without sexual dysfunction. Among the 2721 erectile dysfunction (ED) patients and 1064 premature ejaculation (PE) patients, 301 (11.1%) ED patients and 135 (12.7%) PE patients had redundant foreskin, respectively. Men in the PE group were more likely to have redundant foreskin than men in the non-PE group (P = 0.004). Logistic regression analyses revealed that the presence of redundant foreskin was associated with increased odds of moderate/severe ED (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.31, adjusted P = 0.04), moderate PE (aOR = 1.38, adjusted P = 0.02), and probable PE (aOR = 1.37, adjusted P = 0.03) after adjusting for confounding variables. Our study revealed a positive correlation between the presence of redundant foreskin and the risk of sexual dysfunction, especially in PE patients. Assessment of the length of the foreskin during routine clinical diagnosis may provide information for patients with sexual dysfunction.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT) was the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) with proficient mismatch repair (pMMR) proteins. In this randomized phase 2 trial (ClinicalTrial.gov: NCT04304209), 134 pMMR LARC patients were randomly (1:1) assigned to receive NACRT or NACRT and the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibody sintilimab. As the primary endpoint, the total complete response (CR) rate is 26.9% (18/67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 16.0%-37.8%) and 44.8% (30/67, 95% CI 32.6%-57.0%) in the control and experimental arm, respectively, with significant difference (p = 0.031 for chi-squared test). Response ratio is 1.667 (95% CI 1.035-2.683). Immunohistochemistry shows PD-1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) combined positive score is associated with the synergistic effect. The safety profile is similar between the arms. Adding the PD-1 antibody sintilimab to NACRT significantly increases the CR rate in pMMR LARC, with a manageable safety profile. PD-L1 positivity may help identify patients who might benefit most from the combination therapy.

Composting is one of the primary methods for organic waste recycling in China. This study aims to analyze the product quality of organic fertilizer enterprises from the perspective of actual production and the relationship between production process variations and organic matter content in organic fertilizers based on 348 samples from 229 organic fertilizer companies across 22 provinces. Results showed that fertilizers produced through composting processes contain higher organic matter, averaging 45.42 %, compared to commercial organic fertilizers and bio-organic fertilizers. Raw materials, equipment, methods, operational scale, and personnel structure are key factors affecting the content of organic matter in products. Optimizing equipment and processes in Chinese organic fertilizer companies could increase organic matter content to 49.3 %, potentially reducing annual carbon emissions by an estimated 3.07 to 6.97 billion kg of CO2 equivalent, thereby supporting the realization of dual carbon goals.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), characterized by its recurrent nature, imposes a significant disease burden and compromises the quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests that achieving clinical remission is not sufficient for long-term remission. In pursuit of a favorable prognosis, mucosal healing (MH) has been defined as the target of therapies in UC. This paradigm shift has given rise to the formulation of diverse endoscopic and histological scoring systems, providing distinct definitions for MH. Endoscopic remission (ER) has been widely employed in clinical practice, but it is susceptible to subjective factors related to endoscopists. And there's growing evidence that histological remission (HR) might be associated with a lower risk of disease flares, but the incorporation of HR as a routine therapeutic endpoint remains a debate. The integration of advanced technology has further enriched the definition of deep MH. Up to now, a universal standardized definition for deep MH in clinical practice is currently lacking. This review will focus on the definition of deep MH, from different dimensions, and analyze strengths and limitations, respectively. Subsequent multiple large-scale trials are needed to validate the concept of deep MH, offering valuable insights into potential benefits for UC patients.
