RESUMO

Lycodon is a species-rich genus that currently contains 72 named species. Lycodon zayuensis Jiang, Wang, Jin & Che, 2020, was described from Lower Chayu Town, Chayu County, Tibet, China, based on a single female holotype. During our recent field work, three additional specimens, including two females and one male, were collected and identified as L. zayuensis based on morphological comparison and the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene (1049 bp). Here, we provide an expanded description of this recently described species based on all known specimens.

RESUMO

A new species of the xenodermid snake genus Achalinus Peters, 1869 is described from Fujian Province, China, based on six specimens. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses based on a mitochondrial DNA fragment (CO1) indicated the new taxon is different from its congeners (pdistance ≥ 18.5%). Morphologically, the new species can be diagnosed from the other species by a combination of following characters: (1) dorsal scales 23 rows throughout, strongly keeled, the most outer rows on both sides also keeled and slightly enlarged; (2) tail relatively longer, TaL/TL ratio 0.260.29 in males, 0.210.22 in females; (3) maxillary teeth 3033; (4) length of suture between internasals significantly longer than that between prefrontals; (5) nasal divided into two sections by nasal cleft; (6) a single loreal; (7) SPO 1, seldom 2; (8) SPL 6, the fourth and fifth contacting eye; (9) IFL5, rarely 6, the first three touching the first pair of chin shields; (10) TMP 79, arranged in three rows; (11) VS 142149 in males, VS 152154 in females; (12) SC 7481 in males, SC 6365 in females, arranged in a single row; (13) cloacal entire; (14) greyish brown above, pale yellow beneath; (15) dorsum with an indistinct longitudinal vertebral stripe. The description of the new species brings the total species of Achalinus to 19.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to investigate the inactivation of foodborne pathogens and the quality characteristics of fresh chicken breasts after UVC light-emitting diode (UVC-LED) treatment. Fresh chicken breasts were separately inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes at initial populations of 6.01, 5.80, and 6.22 log CFU/cm2, respectively, and then treated with UVC-LED irradiation at 1,000 to 4,000 mJ/cm2. UVC-LED irradiation inactivated the test bacteria in a dose-dependent manner. After UVC-LED treatment at 4,000 mJ/cm2, the populations of Salmonella Typhimurium, E. coli O157:H7, and L. monocytogenes on chicken breasts were decreased by 1.90, 2.25, and 2.18 log CFU/cm2, respectively. No significant changes (P > 0.05) were found in color, pH, texture, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances of chicken breasts following UVC-LED irradiation at doses ≤4,000 mJ/cm2. These results indicate that UVC-LED radiation is a promising technology for reducing the level of microorganisms while maintaining the physicochemical characteristics of poultry meat.

RESUMO

A new species of the xenodermatid snake genus Achalinus Peters, 1869 is described from Yunnan Province, Southwest China, based on a single male specimen. The new species is assigned to the genus Achalinus on the basis of absence of preocular and postocular, subcaudals arranged in single row, and results of phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA CO1 sequence data. Achalinus pingbianensis sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the combination of following morphological characters: absence of a loreal, internasals subequal to that between prefrontals and dorsal scales strongly keeled, 23 rows throughout. Currently, 13 species are in the genus Achalinus, further taxonomical and phylogenetic studies based on more extensive samples and more markers will help understand the cryptic diversity and clarify their interspecific relationships.

RESUMO

The mechanism behind exercise-induced fatigue is a significant topic in the field of sports physiology. Therefore, establishing and evaluating an acute exercise-induced fatigue animal model that explores the limits of the motor system may provide greater insight into these mechanisms. Heart rate is an important quantitative parameter that accurately reflects the immediate change in physical function due to exercise load. And there is likely to be an important correlation between heart rate and behavioral performance. In this study, changes in heart rate and behavioral indexes during exercise-induced fatigue were quantitatively analyzed in rats using heart rate telemetry and video methods respectively. The behavioral indexes were used as independent variables and the degree of fatigue was used as the forecast value. Ternary quadratic function curve fitting was used to deduce a formula to calculate a fatigue score: Y = 15.2548+0.4346∙xa-0.1154∙xb+0.6826∙xc+0.0044∙xa∙xb-0.0021∙xb∙xc-0.0013∙xc∙xa-0.0023∙xa2-0.0016∙xb2 (r2=0.906). It identified a linear relationship between heart rate and exercise intensity, with a plateau in heart rate occurring during difference periods. It will serve as an effective reference for the modeling of exercise-induced fatigue. In addition, it also provides a theoretical method for analyzing the correlation between peripheral and central parameters.

RESUMO

DNA methylation is essential for spatiotemporally-regulated gene expression in embryonic development. TBX22 (Chr X: 107667964-107688978) functioning as a transcriptional repressor affects DNA binding, sumoylation, and transcriptional repression associated with X-linked cleft palate. This study aimed to explore the relationship and potential mechanism between TBX22 exon 5 methylation and palatal shelf fusion induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). We performed DNA methylation profiling, using MethylRAD-seq, after high throughput sequencing of mouse embryos from control (n=9) and ATRA-treated (to induce cleft palate, n=9) C57BL/6J mice at embryonic gestation days(E) 13.5, 14.5 and 16.5. TBX22 exon 5 was hyper-methylated at the CpG site at E13.5 (P=0.025, log2FC=1.5) and E14.5 (P=0.011, log2FC:1.5) in ATRA-treated, whereas methylation TBX22 exon 5 at the CpG site was not significantly different at E16.5 (P=0.808, log2FC=-0.2) between control and ATRA-treated. MSP results showed a similar trend consistent with the MethylRAD-seq results. qPCR showed the change in TBX22 exon 5 expression level negatively correlated with its TBX22 exon 5 methylation level. These results indicate that changes in TBX22 exon 5 methylation might play an important regulatory role during palatal shelf fusion, and may enlighten the development of novel epigenetic biomarkers in the treatment of CP in the future.

RESUMO

The default mode network (DMN) has been extensively investigated in the literature. However, previous studies have mainly focused on age-related changes in the DMN between old and young participants. Age-dependent changes in specific regions within the DMN have not been adequately explored across the entire adult lifespan. Thus, in the present study, we performed a seed partial least squares (PLS) analysis to investigate lifespan-wide changes in the regions of the functional and structural DMNs using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from healthy subjects aged 16-85 years. The posterior cingulate area was selected as the seed region based on prior fMRI studies. The single-group functional connectivity analysis showed a stable connection between the seed and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and inferior temporal gyrus (ITG); a decreased connection between the seed and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and superior frontal gyrus (SFG); and an increased connection between the seed and the precuneus (PreC), inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and middle frontal gyrus (MFG) across the entire lifespan. In contrast, in the single-group structural covariance analysis, the covariance connections of the seed to the DMN regions demonstrated a stable covariance trend to the PCC, MTG, superior temporal gyrus (STG) and ITG; an inverted U-shaped covariance trend to the MPFC, ACC, SFG, MFG and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG); and a U-shaped covariance trend to the PreC with age. Full-group analyses found significant linear decreases in functional and structural DMN integrity. Our findings provide crucial information regarding the influence of age on the function and structure of the DMN and may contribute to the understanding of the underlying mechanism of age-related changes in the DMN over the lifespan.

RESUMO

The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the clinical significance of serum osteopontin (OPN) levels in lung neoplasm in patients to establish a novel diagnostic score model. Articles were identified by searching the PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wang Fang databases. Studies identified were pooled, and the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Subgroup analyses and publication bias detection were also conducted. Version 12.0 STATA software was used for statistical analysis. A final analysis of 1,327 subjects together (740 patients with lung neoplasms and 587 controls) was performed from 10 clinical case-control studies. The meta-analysis results showed a positive association between serum OPN levels and lung neoplasm (SMD=5.59, 95% CI: 1.85-3.32, P<0.001). The subgroup analysis by ethnicity detected that high levels of serum OPN may be the main risk factor for lung neoplasms in Asians (SMD=1.76, 95% CI: 1.24-2.29, P<0.001), but not in Caucasians (P=0.072). In conclusion, the present meta-analysis indicated that serum OPN levels were generally elevated in lung neoplasm patients, and thus, serum levels of OPN may be useful in diagnosing lung neoplasm in certain population groups.

RESUMO

Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have great potential in regenerative medicine, including cell replacement therapies and disease modelling in vitro. However, with this potential comes several challenges, including clinical safety, reprogramming and differentiation efficiency, and compromised functionality of differentiated cell types after transplantation. Many of these issues arise from imprecise control of cell fate. With large-scale sequencing and genome-editing technologies we can now precisely manipulate the genome, which has expanded our knowledge of functional cell types and cell identity. These technologies may improve our efforts in generating iPS-derived therapeutic cells and in development of therapies for human diseases.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and nature of workplace violence against nurses, and how nurses deal with such aggression; and to identify the risk factors related to violence in the hospital environment. DESIGN: Cross-sectional questionnaire study. SETTING: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong. PARTICIPANTS: All nursing staff in the hospital, except nurses who were unable to read Chinese or who did not have patient contact (eg those worked in administrative positions), were invited to complete a questionnaire. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Demographic data of the respondents, incidence of and risk factors contributing to workplace violence. RESULTS: A total of 420 nurses returned the completed questionnaire (response rate, 25%). Three hundred and twenty (76%; 95% confidence interval, 72-80%) nurses reported abuse of any kind--verbal abuse, 73%; bullying, 45%; physical abuse, 18%; and sexual harassment, 12%. Most (82%) nurses who experienced verbal abuse tended to confide in friends, family members, or colleagues. Some (42%) ignored the incident. Risk factors for workplace violence included: working in male wards and in certain specialties such as the Accident and Emergency Department, Community Nursing Service, and the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department. CONCLUSION: Workplace violence against nurses is a significant problem in Hong Kong. Further large-scale studies should be conducted to more closely examine the problem.
