BACKGROUND: Giant congenital biliary dilation (CBD) is a rare condition observed in clinical practice. Infants born with this condition often experience a poor overall health status, and the disease progresses rapidly, leading to severe biliary obstruction, infections, pressure exerted by the enlarged CBD on abdominal organs, disturbances in the internal environment, and multiple organ dysfunction. The treatment of giant CBD using laparoscopy is challenging due to the high degree of variation in the shape of the bile duct and other organs, making it difficult to separate the bile duct wall from adjacent tissues or to control bleeding. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we present the details of an 11-d-old male newborn who was diagnosed with giant CBD. The patient was admitted to the neonatal surgery department of our hospital due to a history of common bile duct cyst that was detected more than 3 mo ago, and also because the patient had been experiencing yellowish skin for the past 9 d. The abnormal echo in the fetal abdomen was first noticed by the patient's mother during a routine ultrasound examination at a local hospital, when the patient was at 24 wk + 6 d of pregnancy. This finding raised concerns about the possibility of congenital biliary dilatation (22 mm × 21 mm). Subsequent ultrasound examinations at different hospitals consistently confirmed the presence of a congenital biliary dilatation. No specific treatment was administered for biliary dilatation during this period. A computed tomography scan conducted during the hospitalization revealed a large cystic mass in the right upper quadrant and pelvis, measuring approximately 9.2 cm × 7.4 cm × 11.3 cm. Based on the scan, it was classified as a type I biliary dilatation. CONCLUSION: The analysis reveals that prenatal imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, play a crucial role in the early diagnosis, fetal prognosis, and treatment plan for giant CBD. Laparoscopic surgery for giant CBD presents certain challenges, including difficulties in separating the cyst wall, anastomosis, and hemostasis, as well as severe biliary system infection and ulceration. Consequently, there is a high likelihood of converting to laparotomy. The choice between surgical methods like hepaticojejunostomy (HJ) or hepaticoduodenostomy has not been standardized yet. However, we have achieved favorable outcomes using HJ. Preoperative management of inflammation, biliary drainage, liver function protection, and supportive treatment are particularly vital in improving children's prognosis. After discharge, it is essential to conduct timely reexamination and close follow-up to identify potential complications.

Carbon materials with hierarchical porous structures hold great potential for redox electrolyte-enhanced supercapacitors. However, restricted by the intrinsic inert and nonpolar characteristics of carbon, the energy barrier of anchoring redox electrolytes on the pore walls is relatively high. As such, the redox process at the interface less occurs, and the rate of mass transfer is impaired, further leading to a poor electrochemical performance. Here, a ferricyanide anion-philic interface made of in situ inserted boron species into carbon rings is constructed for enhanced charge storage in supercapacitors. Profiting from the unique component-driven effects, the polar anchoring sites on the pore wall can be built to grasp the charged redox ferricyanide anion from the bulk electrolyte and promote the redox process; the dynamics process is fastened correspondingly. Especially, the boron atoms in BC2O and BCO2 units with higher positive natural bond orbital values in the carbon skeleton are pinpointed as intrinsic active sites to bind the negatively charged nitrogen atoms in the ferricyanide anion via electrostatic interaction, confirmed by density functional theoretical calculations. This will suppress the shuttle and diffusion effects of the ferricyanide anion from the surface of the electrode to the bulk electrolyte. Finally, the well-designed PC-3 with high content of BC2O and BCO2 units can reach 1099 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1, which is a more than 2-fold increase over boron-free units of carbon (428 F g-1). The work offers a novel version for designing high-performance carbon materials with unique yet reaction species-philic effects.

Localized surface plasmons exhibit promising capabilities in optoelectronic devices. In most cases, the metal nanoparticle arrays are located on interfaces or inside optical cavities. Fano interferences have been observed and explained via the interference between the waves generated by the localized surface plasmon and dielectric interfaces. Conventionally, these Fano interferences are modeled using the modified Fresnel equation. However, certain issues persist in the fundamental physics or in the numerical calculation process. Here, we adopt the equivalent medium theory (Maxwell-Garnett theory, MGT) to calculate and elucidate Fano interferences in different structures, in the region comprising nanoparticle arrays and dielectrics equivalent to a homogeneous layer of media via the mean field theory. Using this method, the Fano interference can be modeled by mixing different materials, i.e., metals and dielectrics in these cases. Furthermore, a multiple-layered equivalent medium theory is proposed to significantly improve the scalability of this simplified numerical method. In other words, this method can be easily extended to nanoparticles with different shapes, sizes, and materials; in addition, it exhibits robust practicability. Compared with the modified Fresnel equation and finite-difference time-domain methods, this MGT-based method can effectively minimize the calculation process, which is beneficial to the prospective application of plasmon photonics.

Amino-functional large-size mesoporous silica spheres (LMS-AP) were successfully synthesized through a one-step method with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) addition during the pseudomorphic transformation process. LMS-AP were characterized using thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis, Nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurement, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The study found that -NH2 was grafted into LMS, and the LMS-AP had a better thermal stability than other samples. The Pb2+ removal properties of LMS-AP were investigated using the static and dynamic experiments in simulated and real wastewater solutions. The kinetic and equilibrium experiments indicated that the adsorption process of LMS-AP fitted the Langmuir adsorption model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (R2 > 0.98), respectively. The maximum Qe (mg/g) was about 100 mg/g in the static adsorption condition. The adsorption mechanism of removal of Pb2+ was also investigated. In fix bed column experiments, LMS-AP exhibited excellent Pb2+ adsorption ability for simulated wastewater, with the maximum qe (mg/g) of 48.7 mg/g for particle size under 1-3 mm. Meanwhile in actual industrial wastewater treatment process, LMS-AP had a better Pb2+, Zn2+ and Cr (VI) removal efficiency of 80% and As (V) of 30-40% removal efficiency at initial pH 4, suggesting selective adsorption property for different heavy metal ions.

Deep ultraviolet AlGaN-based nanorod (NR) arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint lithography and top-down dry etching techniques from a fully structural LED wafer. Highly ordered periodic structural properties and morphology were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Compared with planar samples, cathodoluminescence measurement revealed that NR samples showed 1.92-fold light extraction efficiency (LEE) enhancement and a 12.2-fold internal quantum efficiency (IQE) enhancement for the emission from multi-quantum wells at approximately 277 nm. The LEE enhancement can be attributed to the well-fabricated nanostructured interface between the air and the epilayers. Moreover, the reduced quantum-confined stark effect accounted for the great enhancement in IQE.

Three kinds of typical structures, hemi-/spherical nanoparticles/nanoparticle dimers on the substrate and spherical nanoparticles/nanoparticle dimers half-buried into the substrate, are used for FDTD simulation to theoretically discuss the influence of the substrate to the localized surface plasmon (LSP) coupling when the metal nanoparticles/nanoparticle dimers are locating near a substrate. Simulated results show that the dependencies between the LSP coupling wavelength and the refractive index of the substrate for different structures are not the same, which can be attributed to the different polarization field distributions of LSPs. When light is incident from different directions, the LSP coupling strength are not the same as well and the ratios of the scattering peak intensities depend on the position of the metal nanoparticles or nanoparticle dimers. These phenomenon can be explained by the difference of the local driving electric field intensities which is modulated by the interface between the air and the substrate.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in Xinjiang is higher than in other regions of China, and Beijing/W lineage Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is the dominant strain of MTB in Xinjiang. However, information on multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB, particularly the correlation between MDR and the Beijing/W lineage and the correlation between drug resistance and the Beijing/W sublineage strains, is limited. MATERIAL/METHODS: We conducted a prospective study to describe the prevalence of MDR/XDR TB, Beijing/W lineage and sublineage strains in Xinjiang in China from 2009 to 2013. All MTB underwent drug susceptibility testing to the first- and second-line anti-tuberculosis drugs. The Beijing/W lineages and sublineages were detected by large-sequence polymorphisms with polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: A total of 410 clinical isolates were identified. The overall percentage of MDR and XDR cases in Xinjiang was 13.2% (54/410) and 13.0% (7/54), respectively. Overall, 9.8% (14/143) of the Beijing lineage MTB were MDR patients, and 15.6% (40/257) of the Non-Beijing lineage MTB were MDR patients. In the 143 Beijing MTB lineages, 11.2% isolates were in sublineage 105, 15.4% isolates were in sublineage 207, 69.2% isolates were in sublineage 181, and 4.2% isolates were in sublineage 150. None of the isolates were detected in sublineage 142. Significant differences between the Beijing/W and non-Beijing/W strains were observed regarding INH and EMB resistance, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of the MDR TB in Xinjiang remains high and imposes challenges for TB control. Four Beijing/W sublineage isolates were observed in Xinjiang. There was no correlation between MDR and the Beijing/W lineage and no correlation between drug resistance and the Beijing/W sublineage strains. Surveillance of the clinical isolates of MTB is recommended to strengthen the identification of MDR/XDR TB and sublineages of the Beijing/W strains.

RESUMO

We predict the existence of gray (dark) solitary waves in negative-index materials on the basis of a derived higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The conditions for the formation of three cases of gray solitary waves and exact analytical expressions are presented. Furthermore, we investigate the properties of these gray solitary waves in negative-index materials. The results show that the higher-order linear and nonlinear effects play a crucial role for the formation and properties of the second and third cases of gray solitary waves.
