RESUMO

The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in aqueous solution is a green and sustainable strategy for ammonia production. Nonetheless, the efficiency of the process still has a wide gap compared to that of the Haber-Bosch one due to the difficulty of N2 activation and the quick recombination of photo-generated carriers. Herein, a core-shell Bi@Bi2MoO6 microsphere through constructing Schottky junctions has been explored as a robust photocatalyst toward N2 reduction to NH3. Metal Bi self-reduced onto Bi2MoO6 not only spurs the photo-generated electron and hole separation owing to the Schottky junction at the interface of Bi and Bi2MoO6 but also promotes N2 adsorption and activation at Bi active sites synchronously. As a result, the yield of the photocatalytic N2-to-ammonia conversion reaches up to 173.40 µmol g-1 on core-shell Bi@Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts, as much as two times of that of bare Bi2MoO6. This work provides a new design for the decarbonization of the nitrogen reduction reaction by the utilization of renewable energy sources.

The vast compositional space available in high-entropy oxide semiconductors offers unique opportunities for electronic band structure engineering in an unprecedented large room. In this work, with wide band gap semiconductor lithium niobate (LiNbO3) as a model system, we show that the substitutional addition of high-entropy metal cation mixtures within the Nb sublattice can lead to the formation of a single-phase solid solution featuring a substantially narrowed band gap and intense broadband visible light absorption. The resulting high-entropy LiNbO3 [denoted as Li(HE)O3] crystallizes as well-faceted nanocubes; atomic-resolution imaging and elemental mapping via transmission electron microscopy unveil a distinct local chemical complexity and lattice distortion, characteristics of high-entropy stabilized solid solution phases. Because of the presence of high-entropy stabilized Co2+ dopants that serve as active catalytic sites, Li(HE)O3 nanocubes can accomplish the visible light-driven photocatalytic water splitting in an aqueous solution containing methanol as a sacrificial electron donor without the need of any additional co-catalysts.

The development of catalysts serves as the cornerstone of innovation in synthesis, as exemplified by the recent discovery of photoenzymes. However, the repertoire of naturally occurring enzymes repurposed by direct light excitation to catalyze new-to-nature photobiotransformations is currently limited to flavoproteins and keto-reductases. Herein, we shed light on imine reductases (IREDs) that catalyze the remote C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond formation, providing a previously elusive radical hydroalkylation of enamides for accessing chiral amines (45 examples with up to 99% enantiomeric excess). Beyond their natural function in catalyzing two-electron reductive amination reactions, upon direct visible-light excitation or in synergy with a synthetic photoredox catalyst, IREDs are repurposed to tune the non-natural photoinduced single-electron radical processes. By conducting wet mechanistic experiments and computational simulations, we unravel how engineered IREDs direct radical intermediates toward the productive and enantioselective pathway. This work represents a promising paradigm for harnessing nature's catalysts for new-to-nature asymmetric transformations that remain challenging through traditional chemocatalytic methods.

The development of rural clean energy is the key to cope with the shortage of traditional energy supply in the rural revitalization strategy and improve the sustainability of rural energy supply. Under the background of digital age, the development and utilization of rural clean energy Internet has become the focus of rural economic development. The government partners of the Rural clean Energy Internet PPP project (RCEIPPPP) are the key to promoting the green and intelligent development of rural energy. In this paper, the index system of project partner selection is constructed, and the problem of government partner selection for RCEIPPPP is studied by AHP and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Partners' financial ability, technical ability, management ability, performance experience, corporate reputation, cooperation ability and risk management are the influencing factors for government partner selection of rural clean energy Internet PPP projects (RCEIPPPPs); 2) Compared with other factors, financial ability, technical ability, management ability and performance experience are the four key factors that are more important in choosing partners; 3) The empirical research shows that AHP, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation and the index system constructed by this research can be applied to the practice of government partner selection for RCEIPPPPs. This study puts forward the evaluation system of government cooperation selection of energy Internet PPP projects from the theoretical level, improves the existing research methods, and makes the theoretical system in this field more complete. From the practical level, it provides scientific basis and suggestions for the government to make decisions on energy Internet PPP projects, and improves the engineering efficiency and quality of rural clean energy Internet construction. This study demonstrates the complexity of clean energy projects, the need for an integrated approach to decision-making, and the need for project managers to actively manage communication and collaboration with partners to ensure successful project implementation.

BACKGROUND: Dementia prevalence is predicted to triple to 152 million globally by 2050. Alzheimer's disease (AD) constitutes 70% of cases. There is an urgent need to identify individuals with preclinical AD, a 10-20-year period of progressive brain pathology without noticeable cognitive symptoms, for targeted risk reduction. Current tests of AD pathology are either too invasive, specialised or expensive for population-level assessments. Cognitive tests are normal in preclinical AD. Emerging evidence demonstrates that movement analysis is sensitive to AD across the disease continuum, including preclinical AD. Our new smartphone test, TapTalk, combines analysis of hand and speech-like movements to detect AD risk. This study aims to [1] determine which combinations of hand-speech movement data most accurately predict preclinical AD [2], determine usability, reliability, and validity of TapTalk in cognitively asymptomatic older adults and [3], prospectively validate TapTalk in older adults who have cognitive symptoms against cognitive tests and clinical diagnoses of Mild Cognitive Impairment and AD dementia. METHODS: Aim 1 will be addressed in a cross-sectional study of at least 500 cognitively asymptomatic older adults who will complete computerised tests comprising measures of hand motor control (finger tapping) and oro-motor control (syllabic diadochokinesis). So far, 1382 adults, mean (SD) age 66.20 (7.65) years, range 50-92 (72.07% female) have been recruited. Motor measures will be compared to a blood-based AD biomarker, phosphorylated tau 181 to develop an algorithm that classifies preclinical AD risk. Aim 2 comprises three sub-studies in cognitively asymptomatic adults: (i) a cross-sectional study of 30-40 adults to determine the validity of data collection from different types of smartphones, (ii) a prospective cohort study of 50-100 adults ≥ 50 years old to determine usability and test-retest reliability, and (iii) a prospective cohort study of ~1,000 adults ≥ 50 years old to validate against cognitive measures. Aim 3 will be addressed in a cross-sectional study of ~200 participants with cognitive symptoms to validate TapTalk against Montreal Cognitive Assessment and interdisciplinary consensus diagnosis. DISCUSSION: This study will establish the precision of TapTalk to identify preclinical AD and estimate risk of cognitive decline. If accurate, this innovative smartphone app will enable low-cost, accessible screening of individuals for AD risk. This will have wide applications in public health initiatives and clinical trials. Co-intercalation reactions make graphite a feasible anode in Ca ion batteries, yet the correlation between Ca ion intercalation behaviors and electrolyte structure remains unclear. This study, for the first time, elucidates the pivotal role of anions in modulating the Ca ion solvation structures and their subsequent intercalation into graphite. Specifically, the electrostatic interactions between Ca ion and anions govern the configurations of solvated-Ca-ion in dimethylacetamide-based electrolytes and graphite intercalation compounds. Among the anions considered (BH4 -, ClO4 -, TFSI- and [B(hfip)4]-), the coordination of four solvent molecules per Ca ion (CN=4) leads to the highest reversible capacities and the fastest reaction kinetics in graphite. Our study illuminates the origins of the distinct Ca ion intercalation behaviors across various anion-modulated electrolytes, employing a blend of experimental and theoretical approaches. Importantly, the practical viability of graphite anodes in Ca-ion full cells is confirmed, showing significant promise for advanced energy storage systems.

Osteoarthritis occurs in any joints, and identification in its earlier stages helps to treat the disease and increase the recovery rate. The radiography method and imaging techniques are traditionally used to identify osteoarthritis. But these methods are expensive, and with the complicated steps. Researchers are working toward developing a highly sensitive biosensor in identifying the osteoarthritis biomarker. This research was focused on developing a C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) colorimetric sensor with gold nanoparticle (AuNP) for diagnosing osteoarthritis. Anti-CTX-II was conjugated with AuNP and then added with CTX-II and sodium chloride for the color change. In the presence of CTX-II, antibody releases from AuNP then binds with CTX-II, and the color of AuNP changed to purple. Without the CTX-II, AuNP remains its red color (dispersed). This easier colorimetric assay detected the CTX-II as low as 2 ng/mL on linear regression [y = 0.0131x - 0.0051; R2 = 0.9205]. Furthermore, control performances with the relevant proteins osteopontin, IL-6, and nonimmune antibody failed to change the color confirming the specific identification of CTX-II.

The glycine transporter 1 (GlyT1) plays a crucial role in the regulation of both inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmission by removing glycine from the synaptic cleft. Given its close association with glutamate/glycine co-activated NMDA receptors (NMDARs), GlyT1 has emerged as a central target for the treatment of schizophrenia, which is often linked to hypofunctional NMDARs. Here, we report the cryo-EM structures of GlyT1 bound with substrate glycine and drugs ALX-5407, SSR504734, and PF-03463275. These structures, captured at three fundamental states of the transport cycle-outward-facing, occluded, and inward-facing-enable us to illustrate a comprehensive blueprint of the conformational change associated with glycine reuptake. Additionally, we identified three specific pockets accommodating drugs, providing clear insights into the structural basis of their inhibitory mechanism and selectivity. Collectively, these structures offer significant insights into the transport mechanism and recognition of substrate and anti-schizophrenia drugs, thus providing a platform to design small molecules to treat schizophrenia.

The voltage-gated calcium channel CaV1.2 is essential for cardiac and vessel smooth muscle contractility and brain function. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that malfunctions of CaV1.2 are involved in brain and heart diseases. Pharmacological inhibition of CaV1.2 is therefore of therapeutic value. Here, we report cryo-EM structures of CaV1.2 in the absence or presence of the antirheumatic drug tetrandrine or antihypertensive drug benidipine. Tetrandrine acts as a pore blocker in a pocket composed of S6II, S6III, and S6IV helices and forms extensive hydrophobic interactions with CaV1.2. Our structure elucidates that benidipine is located in the DIII-DIV fenestration site. Its hydrophobic sidechain, phenylpiperidine, is positioned at the exterior of the pore domain and cradled within a hydrophobic pocket formed by S5DIII, S6DIII, and S6DIV helices, providing additional interactions to exert inhibitory effects on both L-type and T-type voltage gated calcium channels. These findings provide the structural foundation for the rational design and optimization of therapeutic inhibitors of voltage-gated calcium channels.

The development of stable nanocomplexes based on gliadin and other biopolymers shows potential applications as delivery vehicles in the food industry. However, there is limited study specifically targeting the gliadin-lysozyme system, and their underlying interaction mechanism remains poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the binding mechanism between gliadin and lysozyme using a combination of multispectroscopic methods and molecular dynamic simulations. Stable gliadin-lysozyme complex nanoparticles were prepared using an anti-solvent precipitation method with a gliadin-to-lysozyme mass ratio of 2:1 and pH 4.0. The characteristic changes in the UV-visible spectrum of gliadin induced by lysozyme confirmed the complex formation. The analyses of fluorescence, FT-IR spectra, and dissociation tests demonstrated the indispensability of hydrophobic, electrostatic, and hydrogen bonding interactions in the preparation of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the surface morphology of the nanoparticles changed from smooth and spherical to rough and irregular with the addition of lysozyme. Furthermore, molecular dynamic simulations suggested that lysozyme bound to the hydrophobic region of gliadin and hydrogen bonding was crucial for the stability of the complex. These findings contribute to the advancement of gliadin-lysozyme complex nanoparticles as an efficient delivery system for encapsulating bioactive compounds in food industry.

INTRODUCTION: Low-cost simple tests for preclinical Alzheimer's disease are a research priority. We evaluated whether remote unsupervised webcam recordings of finger-tapping were associated with cognitive performance in older adults. METHODS: A total of 404 cognitively-asymptomatic participants (64.6 [6.77] years; 70.8% female) completed 10-second finger-tapping tests (Tasmanian [TAS] Test) and cognitive tests (Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery [CANTAB]) online at home. Regression models including hand movement features were compared with null models (comprising age, sex, and education level); change in Akaike Information Criterion greater than 2 (ΔAIC > 2) denoted statistical difference. RESULTS: Hand movement features improved prediction of episodic memory, executive function, and working memory scores (ΔAIC > 2). Dominant hand features outperformed nondominant hand features for episodic memory (ΔAIC = 2.5), executive function (ΔAIC = 4.8), and working memory (ΔAIC = 2.2). DISCUSSION: This brief webcam test improved prediction of cognitive performance compared to age, sex, and education. Finger-tapping holds potential as a remote language-agnostic screening tool to stratify community cohorts at risk for cognitive decline.

Algae have great application prospects in excess sludge reclamation and recovery of high-value biomass. Chlorococcum humicola was cultivated in this research, using sludge extract (mixed with SE medium) with additions of 10%, 20%, and 30% CO2 (v/v). Results showed that under 20% CO2, the dry weight and polysaccharide yield reached 1.389 ± 0.070 g/L and 313.49 ± 10.77 mg/L, respectively. 10% and 20% CO2 promoted the production of cellular antioxidant molecules to resist the toxic stress and the toxicity of 20% CO2 group decreased from 62.16 ± 3.11% to 33.02 ± 3.76%. 10% and 20% CO2 accelerated the electron transfer, enhanced carbon assimilation, and promoted the photosynthetic efficiency, while 30% CO2 led to photosystem damage and disorder of antioxidant system. Proteomic analysis showed that 20% CO2 mainly affected energy metabolism and the oxidative stress level on the early stage (10 d), while affected photosynthesis and organic substance metabolism on the stable stage (30 d). The up-regulation of PSII photosynthetic protein subunit 8 (PsbA, PsbO), A0A383W1S5 and A0A383VRI4 promoted the efficiency of PSII and chlorophyll synthesis, and the up-regulation of A0A383WH74 and A0A2Z4THB7 led to the accumulation of polysaccharides. The up-regulation of A0A383VDH1, A0A383VX37 and A0A383VA86 promoted respiration. Collectively, this work discloses the regulatory mechanism of high-concentration CO2 on Chlorococcum humicola to overcome toxicity and accumulate polysaccharides.

Polysaccharide is an important biomass of algae. The sludge extract is rich in organic substances, which can be used by algae for biomass growth and high-value biomass synthesis, but its organic toxicity has an inhibitory effect on algae. To overcome inhibition and improve polysaccharide enrichment, Tetradesmus obliquus was cultured with sludge extract with different indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentrations. Within 30 days of the culture cycle, T. obliquus showed in good condition at the IAA dosage content of 10-6 M, the maximum cell density and dry weight were respectively (106.78 ± 2.20) × 106 cell/mL and 2.941 ± 0.067 g/L while the contents of chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, and carotenoid were 1.79, 1.91 and 2.80 times that of the blank group, respectively. The highest polysaccharide accumulation was obtained under this culture condition, reaching 533.15 ± 21.11 mg/L on the 30th day, which was 2.49 times that in the blank group. By FT-IR and NMR analysis, it was found that the polysaccharides of T. obliquus were sulfated polysaccharide with glucose and rhamnose as the main monosaccharides. Proteomic showed that the up-regulation of A0A383WL26 and A0A383WLM8 enhanced the light trapping ability, and A0A383WMJ2 enhanced the accumulation of NADPH. The up-regulation of A0A383WHD5 and A0A383WAY6 indicated that IAA culture could repair the damage caused by sludge toxicity, thus promoting the accumulation of biomass. The above findings provided new insights into the mechanism of sludge toxicity removal of T. obliquus and the enhancement of the polysaccharide accumulation effect under different concentrations of IAA.

Degradation of polysaccharides based on lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) has received considerably interest in the environment and energy fields since 2010. With the rapid development of nanozymes in various fields, it is highly desirable but challenging to develop LPMO-like nanozymes with high specificity and satisfied activity. Here, a defective copper-cobalt binuclear Prussian blue analogue (CuCoPBA) nanozyme was developed via a facile and ingenious methodology based on single histidine (His). For the first time, His-CuCoPBA nanozyme was found to exhibit LPMO-like activity with H2O2 as a cosubstrate at room temperature and neutral pH, which can efficiently catalyze the degradation of galactomannans selectively. Significantly, the high degradation activity at pH 10 expands the application of Fenton-like nanozymes in alkaline condition. Singlet oxygen (1O2), as a main reactive intermediate, plays a crucial role in the galactomannan degradation catalyzed by His-CuCoPBA nanozyme. Both control experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results indicate Cu-NxHis contributes to the efficiently and selectively catalytic activity of His-CuCoPBA nanozymes by emulating the binding and catalytic sites of LPMOs. The present work not only represents a fundamental breakthrough toward degradation of polysaccharide based on nanozyme, but also contributes to understanding the catalytic mechanism of natural Cu-dependent LPMOs.

The integration of hydrogels with bio-friendly functional components through simple and efficient strategies to construct wound dressings with broad-spectrum antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties to promote the healing of infected diabetic wounds is highly desirable but remains a major challenge. Here, wormwood essential oil (WEO) is effectively encapsulated in the hydrogel via an O/W-Pickering emulsion during the polymerization of methacrylic anhydride gelatin (GelMA), acrylamide (AM), and acrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (AAc-NHS) to form a multifunctional hydrogel dressing (HD-WEO). Compared with conventional emulsions, Pickering emulsions not only improve the encapsulation stability of the WEO, but also enhance the tensile and swelling properties of hydrogel. The synergistic interaction of WEO's diverse bioactive components provides a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and MRSA. In addition, the HD-WEO can induce the polarization of macrophages from M1 to M2 phenotype. With these advantages, the broad-spectrum antibacterial and immunomodulatory HD-WEO effectively promotes the collagen deposition and neovascularization, thereby accelerating the healing of MRSA-infected diabetic wounds.

Little information is available on the influence of the compound use of intercropping (IN) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) on Cd accumulation and the expression of Cd transporter genes in two intercropped plants. A pot experiment was conducted to study the influences of IN and AMF-Glomus versiforme on growth and Cd uptake of two intercropped plants-maize and Cd hyperaccumulator Sphagneticola calendulacea, and the expression of Cd transporter genes in maize in Cd-polluted soils. IN, AMF and combined treatments of IN and AMF (IN + AMF) obviously improved biomass, photosynthesis and total antioxidant capacities of two plants. Moreover, single and compound treatments of IN and AMF evidently reduced Cd contents in maize, and the greatest decreases appeared in the compound treatment. However, Cd contents of S. calendulacea in IN, AMF and IN + AMF groups were notably improved. Furthermore, the single and compound treatments of IN and AMF significantly downregulated the expression levels of Nramp1, HMA1, ABCC1 and ABCC10 in roots and leaves, and the largest decreases were observed in the combined treatment. Our work first revealed that the combined use of IN and AMF appeared to have a synergistic effect on decreasing Cd content by downregulating the expression of Cd transporter genes in maize.

OBJECTIVE: The INFIX technique is becoming one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures for anterior pelvic ring instability injuries. The purpose of this article is to compare the clinical outcomes of modified anterior subcutaneous internal fixation (M-INFIX) with conventional anterior subcutaneous internal fixation (C-INFIX) for anterior pelvic ring instability injuries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 36 cases of unstable pelvic injuries treated operatively at our institution, 20 of which were treated with C-INFIX and 16 with M-INFIX. Data collected included age, gender, ISS score, fracture typing, operative time, operative bleeding, postoperative complications, fracture healing time, Matta score, Majeed score, and follow-up time. Statistical sub-folding of each variable between the two groups was performed. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the C-INFIX and M-INFIX groups in terms of age, gender, ISS (Injury Severity Score), follow-up time, fracture typing, fracture healing time, and Majeed score (P > 0.05). the M-INFIX had a significantly lower incidence of postoperative complications than the C-INFIX group, especially in the incidence of Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) injury (P < 0.05). In contrast, the M-INFIX group had statistically higher operative time, intraoperative bleeding, and Matta score than the C-INFIX group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study was based on a modified application of the surgical experience with C-INFIX and showed better clinical outcomes in terms of complication rates and quality of repositioning than the conventional surgical approach. These findings indicate that further analytical studies of this study would be valuable.

It has been an urgent requirement for materials with remarkable performance in the photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants by photocatalytic technology. Limited surface area and speedy recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers seriously restrain the application of g-C3N4. Morphology control is a powerful approach to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of g-C3N4. Herein, we reported a method to attain graphitic carbon nitride with rectangular hollow tubular morphology and asperous surface (TUM-CN-2) which is prepared from urea-melamine hydrothermal products and trithiocyanuric acid by self-assembling without using organic solvents or template agents. The specific surface area, photocatalytic activity, and photo-generated carriers migration and separation rate of the obtained photocatalyst TUM-CN-2 are vastly improved. Contrasted with pure g-C3N4, the degradation rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and Rhodamine B (RhB) was enhanced about 3.04 and 13.96 times in visible light irradiation, respectively. Moreover, the interference parameters, active free radicals, potential degradation mechanism, and degradation paths of TCH were researched systematically. This work provides a green way to acquire the modified g-C3N4 with splendid catalytic activity through the self-assembly method.

Electro-optic modulators are essential devices on silicon photonic chips in modern optical communication networks. This paper presents a compact, low-loss electro-optic modulator. The modulation efficiency is greatly improved by embedding the lower half of the slot waveguide into the buried oxide layer and inserting graphene at the junction. The interaction of graphene with an optical field in a waveguide is studied using the finite element method. The functions of phase modulation and absorption modulation are realized by changing the gate voltage to change the chemical potential of graphene. The semi-embedded slot waveguide optical modulator has a length of 50 µm. After simulation verification, it can be used as an electro-absorption modulator and can achieve a modulation depth of 26.38 dB and an insertion loss of 0.60 dB. When used as an electro-refractive modulator, it can be realized with a linear change of phase from zero to π; the total insertion loss is only 0.59 dB. The modulator has a modulation bandwidth of 79.6 GHz, and the energy consumption as electro-absorption and electro-refraction modulation are 0.51 and 1.92 pj/bit, respectively. Compared with common electro-optic modulators, the electro-optic modulator designed in this paper has a higher modulation effect and also takes into account the advantages of low insertion loss and low energy consumption. This research is helpful for the design of higher-performance optical communication network devices.

Objective: To investigate the association of body mass index (BMI) with asthma and analyze the risk factors of asthma persistence among overweight/obese adolescents and those with a high risk for obesity. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, adolescents aged 11-17 years with complete general information and asthma diagnoses were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. For adolescents without self-reported asthma, we performed matching according to age and sex at a case-to-control ratio of 1:3. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify independent predictors of asthma occurrence followed by constructing a nomogram and comparing its efficacy to independent factors in predicting asthma occurrence. Besides, associations of BMI with asthma occurrence and persistence were evaluated. Finally, we obtained risk factors for asthma persistence in overweight/obese individuals and those at a high risk for obesity. Results: Totally 753 adolescents with asthma and 2259 adolescents without asthma were included to analyze the occurrence of asthma. BMI and Hispanic Ethnicity were independent predictors of asthma occurrence and were included in nomogram construction. BMI had an efficiency comparable to that of the nomogram model in predicting asthma occurrence, which is superior to that of Hispanic Ethnicity. Of the 753 adolescents diagnosed with asthma, 464 were still diagnosed with asthma of at least a year's duration. Interestingly, BMI may have the ability to predict asthma persistence. Further, Hispanic Ethnicity and household income were significantly related to asthma occurrence among overweight/obese and high-risk obese individuals. Conclusions: High BMI could independently predict increased asthma occurrence. Additionally, BMI may play an essential role in predicting asthma persistence. This study may help improve the diagnosis and reduce the occurrence of asthma.
