RESUMO

There has been increasing concern regarding the adverse environmental and health effects of organic pollutants. A list of priority control organic pollutants (PCOPs) can provide regulatory frameworks for the use and monitoring of organic compounds in the environment. In this study, 20,010 groundwater samples were collected from 15 "first level" groundwater resource zones in China. Fifty (50) organic compounds were analyzed based on their prevalence, occurrence, and physicochemical properties (persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity). Results showed that 16 PCOPs, including 12 pesticides, 3 aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), and 1 phthalate ester, were recognized. Pesticides and AHs accounted for 75 % and 18.75 % of the high-priority pollutants, respectively. There were significant differences in PCOPs between confined and phreatic groundwater. Higher concentrations of pesticides were mainly detected in phreatic groundwater. PCOPs detected in samples from the 15 groundwater resource zones were mainly pesticides and AHs. The groundwater data indicate that the organic compounds detected in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), Yangtze River Basin (YZB), Liaohe River Basin (LRB), and Songhua River Basin (SRB) are mainly categorized as Q1 (high priority) and Q2 (medium priority) pollutants based on the contaminants ranking system in China. The findings from this study offer a snapshot of the wide distribution of PCOPs in the surveyed regions, and are expected to establishing treatment and prevention measures at both the regional and national levels in China.

Although intense efforts have been devoted to the development of thermally conductive epoxy resin composites, most previous works ignore the importance of the contact thermal resistance between epoxy resin composites and mating surfaces. Here, we report on epoxy resin/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) composites, which show low contact thermal resistance with the contacting surface by tuning adhesion energy. We found that adhesion energy increases with increasing the ratio of soybean-based epoxy resin/amino silicone oil and h-BN contents. The adhesion energy has a negative correlation with the contact thermal resistance; that is, enhancing the adhesion energy will lead to reduced contact thermal resistance. The contact thermal conductance increases with the h-BN contents and is low to 0.025 mm2·K/W for the epoxy resin/60 wt % h-BN composites, which is consistent with the theoretically calculated value. By investigating the wettability and chain dynamics of the epoxy resin/h-BN composites, we confirm that the low contact thermal resistance stems from the increased intermolecular interaction between the epoxy resin chains. The present study provides a practical approach for the development of epoxy resin composites with enhanced thermal conductivity and reduced contact thermal resistance, aiming for effective thermal management of electronics.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a kind of emerging environmental contamination, and are commonly found in antibiotic application situations, attracting wide attention. Fish skin mucosal surface (SMS), as the contact interface between fish and water, is the first line of defense against external pollutant invasion. Antibiotics are widely used in aquaculture, and SMS may be exposed to antibiotics. However, what happens to SMS when antibiotics are applied, and whether ARGs are enriched in SMS are not clear. In this study, Zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to antibiotic and antibiotic resistant bacteria in the laboratory to simulate the aquaculture situation, and the effects of SMS on the spread of ARGs were explored. The results showed that SMS maintained the stability of the bacterial abundance and diversity under apramycin (APR) and bacterial exposure effectively. Until 11 days after stopping APR exposure, the abundance of ARGs in SMS (mean value was 3.32 × 10-3 copies/16S rRNA copies) still did not recover to the initial stage before exposure, which means that enriched ARGs in SMS were persistently remained. Moreover, non-specific immunity played an important role in resisting infection of external contamination. Besides, among antioxidant proteins, superoxide dismutase showed the highest activity. Consequently, it showed that SMS became a barrier of antibiotic resistance genes under APR exposure, and ARGs in SMS were difficult to remove once colonized. This study provided a reference for understanding the transmission, enrichment process, and ecological impact of antibiotics and ARGs in aquatic environments.

Existing optical information hiding algorithms for multiple images require generating hidden keys for embedded images, resulting in the transmission of numerous keys. This challenge undermines the usage of these algorithms in low-quality networks. To address this issue and enhance transmission efficiency, we present a multi-image optical information hiding algorithm based on Fourier transformation principles, which is employed to generate hidden frequency maps and carrier frequency maps. Specific low-frequency information zones are extracted within these hidden frequency maps. A chaotic system integrates a phase mask, modulated with the low-frequency regions, positioned in the carrier frequency map's high-frequency sector. The final stego image is obtained by subjecting the carrier frequency map to inverse Fourier transformation. Experimental analysis shows that concealing three images takes only 0.0089 s, with extraction requiring 0.0658 s. Post-extraction PSNR values for hidden images exceed 32 dB. Robustness and anti-attack experiments were done to prove the security of this algorithm. The compared experiments between the proposed method and other state-of-the-art algorithms affirm the algorithm's attributes of simplicity, ease of implementation, robust security, and high efficiency. Importantly, the restoration process eliminates the necessity of transmitting hidden keys, reducing network burdens and enhancing both concealment and extraction efficiencies significantly.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is known to contribute to the development of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, identifying HFpEF in individuals with type 2 diabetes early on is often challenging due to a limited array of biomarkers. This study aims to investigate specific biomarkers associated with the progression of HFpEF in individuals with type 2 diabetes, for the purpose of enabling early detection and more effective management strategies. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from individuals with type 2 diabetes, both with and without HFpEF, for proteomic analysis. Plasma integrin α1 (ITGA1) levels were measured and compared between the two groups. Participants were further categorised based on ITGA1 levels and underwent detailed transthoracic echocardiography at baseline and during a median follow-up period of 30 months. Multivariable linear and Cox regression analyses were conducted separately to assess the associations between plasma ITGA1 levels and changes in echocardiography indicators and re-hospitalisation risk. Additionally, proteomic data for the individuals' left ventricles, from ProteomeXchange database, were analysed to uncover mechanisms underlying the change in ITGA1 levels in HFpEF. RESULTS: Individuals with type 2 diabetes and HFpEF showed significantly higher plasma ITGA1 levels than the individuals with type 2 diabetes without HFpEF. These elevated ITGA1 levels were associated with left ventricular remodelling and impaired diastolic function. Furthermore, during a median follow-up of 30 months, multivariable analysis revealed that elevated ITGA1 levels independently correlated with deterioration of both diastolic and systolic cardiac functions. Additionally, higher baseline plasma ITGA1 levels independently predicted re-hospitalisation risk (HR 2.331 [95% CI 1.387, 3.917], p=0.001). Proteomic analysis of left ventricular myocardial tissue provided insights into the impact of increased ITGA1 levels on cardiac fibrosis-related pathways and the contribution made by these changes to the development and progression of HFpEF. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: ITGA1 serves as a biomarker for monitoring cardiac structural and functional damage, can be used to accurately diagnose the presence of HFpEF, and can be used to predict potential deterioration in cardiac structure and function as well as re-hospitalisation for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Its measurement holds promise for facilitating risk stratification and early intervention to mitigate the adverse cardiovascular effects associated with diabetes. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical outcomes and biomechanical characteristics of 1-, 2-, and 3-level pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO), and establish selection criteria based on preoperative radiographic parameters. METHODS: Patients undergone PSO to treat ankylosing spondylitis from February 2009 to May 2019 in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were enrolled. According to the quantity of osteotomy performed, the participants were divided into group A (1-level PSO, n = 24), group B (2-level PSO, n = 19), and group C (3-level PSO, n = 11). Clinical outcomes were assessed before surgery and at the final follow-up. Comparisons of the radiographic parameters and quality-of-life indicators were performed among and within these groups, and the selection criteria were established by regression. Finite element analysis was conducted to compare the biomechanical characteristics of the spine treated with different quantity of osteotomies under different working conditions. RESULTS: Three-level PSO improved the sagittal parameters more significantly, but resulted in longer operative time and greater blood loss (p < 0.05). Greater stress was found in the proximal screws and proximal junction area of the vertebra in the model simulating 1-level PSO. Larger stress of screws and vertebra was observed at the distal end in the model simulating 3-level PSO. CONCLUSION: Multilevel PSO works better for larger deformity correction than single-level PSO by allowing greater sagittal parameter correction and obtaining a better distribution of stress in the hardware construct, although with longer operation time and greater blood loss. Three-level osteotomy is recommended for the patients with preoperative of global kyphosis > 85.95°, T1 pelvic angle > 62.3°, sagittal vertical alignment > 299.55 mm, and pelvic tilt+ chin-brow vertical angle > 109.6°.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present our findings of the distribution pattern of choroidal arteries and large veins in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 980 patients who underwent ICGA at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from 2017 to 2023, including 240 patients with AMD. Secondary image processing was applied to the angiographic videos to obtain posterior distribution maps of choroidal arteries and large veins. Differences between different distribution patterns regarding age, gender, eye laterality, and circulation time were compared. We also conducted a comparison of choroidal vascular distribution characteristics between patients with AMD and patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and provided a summary of choroidal vascular distribution patterns in AMD. Results: The filling patterns of choroidal arteries can be classified into the invisible trunk arteries type, the partially masked trunk arteries type, and the exposed trunk arteries type. The vascular topography of the large choroidal vein can be classified into the watershed type, the non-watershed type, and the unknown type, further divided into six subtypes. The distribution patterns of choroidal arteries and veins were significantly correlated with age (P < 0.001). Left eye, older age, and the exposed trunk arteries type were independent risk factors for non-watershed large choroidal vein (P < 0.05). The non-watershed type was the main characteristic of the venous phase in AMD. Conclusions: The distribution characteristics of the arterial and venous patterns in AMD suggest atrophy of the small blood vessels in the choroid and insufficient perfusion pressure of the blood flow.

CD155, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is closely related to cell proliferation, adhesion, and migration. CD155 is overexpressed on the surface of cancer cells to promote cell proliferation and is upregulated in damaged tissues as a stress-induced molecule. The process of skeletal muscle regeneration after injury is complex and involves injurious stimulation and subsequent satellite cell proliferation. However, the role of CD155 in this process remains unelucidated. This study aimed to explore the role of CD155 in injured skeletal muscle regeneration and to clarify its effect on satellite cell proliferation and differentiation. Here, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunofluorescence results indicated that CD155 expression in satellite cells increased after skeletal muscle injury. CD155 knockout in mice impaired the regeneration of skeletal muscle. A bone marrow transplantation mouse model was constructed and revealed that CD155 on skeletal muscle tissues, not immune cells, affected muscle regeneration. In vitro, CD155 knockdown in myoblasts inhibited their proliferation and differentiation. The transcriptomic analysis also indicated that CD155 absence can impair the biological proliferation and differentiation process of myoblasts. Our research demonstrates that CD155 directly promotes injured muscle regeneration by regulating satellite cell proliferation and differentiation, which may be a potential therapeutic molecule for skeletal muscle injury.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting postoperative quality of life in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK), and establish a personalized sagittal reconstruction strategy. METHODS: Patients with AS and TLK who underwent pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) from February 2009 to May 2019 were retrospectively included. Quality of life and spinal sagittal radiographic parameters were collected before surgery and at the last follow-up. Patients were divided into two groups based on the attainment of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) on the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index and Oswestry Disability Index. Comparisons of radiographic parameters and clinical outcomes were conducted between and within groups. Regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors within the missing MCID cohort. Sagittal reconstruction equations were established using the pelvic incidence (PI) and thoracic inlet angle (TIA) in the reached MCID cohort. RESULTS: The study comprised 82 participants. Significant improvements were observed in most radiographic parameters and all quality-of-life indicators during the final follow-up compared with the preoperative measures (p < 0.05). Factors including cervical lordosis (CL) ≥ 18° (OR 9.75, 95% CI 2.26-58.01, p = 0.005), chin-brow vertical angle (CBVA) ≥ 25° (OR 14.7, 95% CI 3.29-91.21, p = 0.001), and pelvic tilt (PT) ≥ 33° (OR 21.77, 95% CI 5.92-103.44, p < 0.001) independently correlated with a failure to attain MCID (p < 0.05). Sagittal realignment targets were constructed as follows: sacral slope (SS) = 0.84 PI - 17.4° (R2 = 0.81, p < 0.001), thoracic kyphosis (TK) = 0.51 PI + 10.8° (R2 = 0.46, p = 0.002), neck tilt (NT) = 0.52 TIA - 5.8° (R2 = 0.49, p < 0.001), and T1 slope (T1S) = 0.48 TIA + 5.8° (R2 = 0.45, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: PSO proved efficacious in treating AS complicated by TLK, yielding favorable outcomes. CBVA ≥ 25°, CL ≥ 18°, and PT ≥ 33° were the primary factors affecting postoperative quality of life in patients with AS. The personalized sagittal reconstruction strategy in this study focused on the subjective sensations and daily needs of patients with AS, which were delineated by the equations SS = 0.84 PI - 17.4°, TK = 0.51 PI + 10.8°, NT = 0.52 TIA - 5.8°, and T1S = 0.48 TIA + 5.8°.

A long-standing trade-off exists between improving crystallinity and minimizing particle size in the synthesis of perovskite-type transition-metal oxynitride photocatalysts via the thermal nitridation of commonly used metal oxide and carbonate precursors. Here, we overcome this limitation to fabricate ATaO2N (A = Sr, Ca, Ba) single nanocrystals with particle sizes of several tens of nanometers, excellent crystallinity and tunable long-wavelength response via thermal nitridation of mixtures of tantalum disulfide, metal hydroxides (A(OH)2), and molten-salt fluxes (e.g., SrCl2) as precursors. The SrTaO2N nanocrystals modified with a tailored Ir-Pt alloy@Cr2O3 cocatalyst evolved H2 around two orders of magnitude more efficiently than the previously reported SrTaO2N photocatalysts, with a record solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 0.15% for SrTaO2N in Z-scheme water splitting. Our findings enable the synthesis of perovskite-type transition-metal oxynitride nanocrystals by thermal nitridation and pave the way for manufacturing advanced long-wavelength-responsive particulate photocatalysts for efficient solar energy conversion.

Based on surface biomolecular imprinting technology, a rotary microfluidic electrochemical paper-based chip (MIP-ePADs) was proposed for sensitive and selective detection of human interleukin 6 (IL-6) and procalcitonin (PCT). Compared with the traditional method, the sample can be added directly on the MIP-ePAD by rotating the working electrode, which avoids the loss of the liquid to be tested and greatly simplifies the process of electropolymerization imprinting and template elution. Our experimental results show that linear concentration ranges of IL-6 and PCT in the electrochemical molecularly imprinted microfluidic paper-based chip ranged from 0.01 to 5 ng mL-1, with their detection limits being 3.5 and 2.1 pg mL-1, respectively. For the detection of actual serum samples, there was no significant difference between the results of MIP-ePADs and the traditional electrochemiluminescence method used in hospitals, indicating that the paper-based chip can be used for stable and accurate analysis and detection. The chip greatly reduces the cost of clinical trials due to its advantages of easy preparation and low cost. The chip can be used for the analysis of non-antibody inflammation markers and can be widely used in home and hospital treatment detection. This method will not only play an important role in rapid detection, but also provide new ideas for the improvement of rapid detection technology.

Background: Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are neuroendocrine tumors located in the sellar region. Surgery, being the primary treatment option for most PAs, is known to cause disruptions in sodium metabolism. Objective: To develop and validate a nomogram for assessment the incidence of postoperative sodium disturbance (SD) in patients with PAs. Methods: In this retrospective study, 208 patients with PAs who underwent resection surgery between 2013 and 2020 were included. Various demographic characteristics, clinical features and laboratory data were analyzed as potential predictors of postoperative sodium disturbance (SD). LASSO regression were used to identify independent preoperative variables associated with SD. Logistic regression was employed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A nomogram was constructed to visualize these results and evaluated using metrics such as the area under the curve (AUC) for discrimination, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test for calibration and decision curve for usefulness assessment. Results: The incidence of SD was 44.23% (92 cases out of 208). Six preoperative factors, including sex, types of PAs, phosphocreatine kinase (CK), serum iron (Fe), free fatty acids (NEFA) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV), were identified for constructing a predictive nomogram. The nomogram showed high accuracy, with AUC values of 0.851 (95% CI [0.799-0.923]) and 0.771 (95% CI [0.681-0.861]) in the training and validation datasets, respectively. Calibration assessment and decision curve analysis confirmed its good agreement and clinical utility. Conclusion: A practical and effective nomogram for predicting SD after PAs surgery is presented in this study.

PURPOSE: A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase (ADAM) and A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin Motif (ADAMTS) have been reported potentially involved in bone metabolism and related to bone mineral density. This Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis was performed to determine whether there are causal associations of serum ADAM/ADAMTS with BMD in rid of confounders. METHODS: The genome-wide summary statistics of four site-specific BMD measurements were obtained from studies in individuals of European ancestry, including forearm (n = 8,143), femoral neck (n = 32,735), lumbar spine (n = 28,498) and heel (n = 426,824). The genetic instrumental variables for circulating levels of ADAM12, ADAM19, ADAM23, ADAMTS5 and ADAMTS6 were retrieved from the latest genome-wide association study of European ancestry (n = 5336 ~ 5367). The estimated causal effect was given by the Wald ratio for each variant, the inverse-variance weighted model was used as the primary approach to combine estimates from multiple instruments, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of MR results. The Bonferroni-corrected significance was set at P < 0.0025 to account for multiple testing, and a lenient threshold P < 0.05 was considered to suggest a causal relationship. RESULTS: The causal effects of genetically predicted serum ADAM/ADAMTS levels on BMD measurements at forearm, femoral neck and lumbar spine were not statistically supported by MR analyses. Although causal effect of ADAMTS5 on heel BMD given by the primary MR analysis (ß = -0.006, -0.010 to 0.002, P = 0.004) failed to reach Bonferroni-corrected significance, additional MR approaches and sensitivity analyses indicated a robust causal relationship. CONCLUSION: Our study provided suggestive evidence for the causal effect of higher serum levels of ADAMTS5 on decreased heel BMD, while there was no supportive evidence for the associations of ADAM12, ADAM19, ADAM23, and ADAMTS6 with BMD at forearm, femoral neck and lumbar spine in Europeans.

BACKGROUND: Microbes constitute almost the entire biological community in subsurface groundwater and play an important role in ecological evolution and global biogeochemical cycles. Ecological baseline as a fundamental reference with less human interference has been investigated in surface ecosystems such as soils, rivers, and ocean, but the existence of groundwater microbial ecological baseline (GMEB) is still an open question so far. RESULTS: Based on high-throughput sequencing information derived from national monitoring of 733 newly constructed wells, we find that bacterial communities in pristine groundwater exhibit a significant lateral diversity gradient and gradually approach the topsoil microbial latitudinal diversity gradient with decreasing burial depth of phreatic water. Among 74 phyla dominated by Proteobacteria in groundwater, Patescibacteria act as keystone taxa that harmonize microbes in shallower aquifers and accelerate decline in bacterial diversity with increasing well-depth. Decreasing habitat niche breadth with increasing well-depth suggests a general change in the relationship among key microbes from closer cooperation in shallow to stronger competition in deep groundwater. Unlike surface-water microbes, microbial communities in pristine groundwater are predominantly shaped by deterministic processes, potentially associated with nutrient sequestration under dark and anoxic environments in aquifers. CONCLUSIONS: By unveiling the biogeographic patterns and mechanisms controlling the community assembly of microbes in pristine groundwater throughout China, we firstly confirm the existence of GMEB in shallower aquifers and propose Groundwater Microbial Community Index (GMCI) to evaluate anthropogenic impact, which highlights the importance of GMEB in groundwater water security and health diagnosis. The tailored design of tri-metallic Pt-based porous nanodendrites (PNDs) is crucial for green energy production technologies, ascribed to their fancy features, great surface areas, accessible active sites, and stability against aggregation. However, their aqueous-phase one-step synthesis at room temperature remains a daunting challenge. Herein, we present a facile, green, and template-free approach for the one-step synthesis of PtPdCu PNDs by ultrasonication of an aqueous solution of metal salts and Pluronic F127 at 25 ℃, based on natural isolation among nucleation and growth step driven by the disparate reduction kinetics of the metals and acoustic cavitation mechanism of ultrasonic waves. The resultant PtPdCu PNDs formed in a spatial nanodendritic shape with a dense array of branches, open corners, interconnected pores, high surface area (46.9 m2/g), and high Cu content (21 %). The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) mass activity of PtPdCu PNDs (3.66 mA/µgPt) is 1.45, 2.73, and 2.83 times higher than those of PtPd PNDs, PtCu PNDs, and commercial Pt/C, respectively based on equivalent Pt mass, which is superior to previous PtPdCu catalysts reported elsewhere, besides a superior durability and CO-poisoning tolerance. This study may pave the way for the controlled fabrication of ternary Pt-based PNDs for various electrocatalytic applications.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease with a higher prevalence in females than in males. Sex may be a key factor affecting the progression of OA. This study aimed to investigate critical sex-difference-related genes in patients with OA and confirm their potential roles in OA regulation. Methods: OA datasets GSE12021, GSE55457, and GSE36700 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database to screen OA-causing genes that are differentially expressed in the two sexes. Cytoscape was used to construct a protein-protein interaction network and determine hub genes. Synovial tissues of patients (male and female) with OA and female non-OA healthy controls were obtained to confirm the expression of hub genes and screen the key genes among them. Destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM)-induced OA mice model was established to verify the screened key genes. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and Safranin O-fast green dye staining were employed to observe synovial inflammation and pathological cartilage status. Results: The abovementioned three datasets were intersected to obtain 99 overlapping differentially expressed genes, of which 77 were upregulated and 22 were downregulated in female patients with OA. The hub genes screened were EGF, AQP4, CDC42, NTRK3, ERBB2, STAT1, and CaMK4. Among them, Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase-4 (CaMK4) was identified as a key sex-related gene for OA. It was significantly higher in female OA patients than in the cases of male patients. Moreover, CaMK4 was significantly increased in female patients with OA compared with the female non-OA group. These results suggest that CaMK4 plays an important role in the progression of OA. OA mouse models demonstrated that CaMK4 expression in the mice knee joint synovial tissue elevated after DMM, with aggravated synovial inflammation and significant cartilage damage. Cartilage damage improved after intraperitoneal administration of the CaMK4 inhibitor KN-93. Conclusions: CaMK4 is a key sex-related gene influencing the progression and pathogenesis of OA and may be considered as a new target for OA treatment.

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease, with pathological characteristics of bone erosion, inflammation of attachment point, and bone ankylosis. Due to the ossified intervertebral disc and ligament, pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) is one of the mainstream surgeries of AS-related thoracolumbar kyphosis, but the large amount of blood loss and high risk of instrumental instability limit its clinical application. The purpose of our study is to propose a new transpedicular vertebral body compression osteotomy (VBCO) in PSO to reduce blood loss and improve stability. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on patients with AS-related thoracolumbar kyphosis who underwent one-level PSO in our hospital from February 2009 to May 2019. A total of 31 patients were included in this study; 6 received VBCO and 25 received eggshell vertebral body osteotomy. We collected demographic data containing gender and age at diagnosis. Surgical data contained operation time, estimated blood loss (EBL), and complications. Radiographic data contained pre-operative and follow-up sagittal parameters including chin brow-vertical angle (CBVA), global kyphosis (GK), thoracic kyphosis (TK), and lumbar lordosis (LL). A typical case with L2-PSO was used to establish a finite element model. The mechanical characteristics of the internal fixation device, vertebral body, and osteotomy plane of the two osteotomy models were analyzed under different working conditions. Results: The VBCO could provide comparable restoring of CBVA, GK, TK, and LL in the eggshell osteotomy procedure (all p > 0.05). The VBCO significantly reduced EBL compared to those with eggshell osteotomy [800.0 ml (500.0-1,439.5 ml) vs. 1,455.5 ml (1,410.5-1,497.8 ml), p = 0.033]. Compared with the eggshell osteotomy, VBCO showed better mechanical property. For the intra-pedicular screw fixation, the VBCO group had a more average distributed and lower stress condition on both nails and connecting rod. VBCO had a flattened osteotomy plane than the pitted osteotomy plane of the eggshell group, showing a lower and more average distributed maximum stress and displacement of osteotomy plane. Conclusion: In our study, we introduced VBCO as an improved method in PSO, with advantages in reducing blood loss and providing greater stability. Further investigation should focus on clinical research and biomechanical analysis for the application of VBCO.

Introduction: Heat-related illnesses can lead to morbidity, which are anticipated to increase frequency with predictions of increased global surface temperatures and extreme weather events. Although heat acclimation training (HAT) could prevent heat-related diseases, the mechanisms underlying HAT-promoting beneficial changes in organ function, immunity, and gut microbes remain unclear. Methods: In the current study, we recruited 32 healthy young soldiers and randomly divided them into 4 teams to conduct HATs for 10 days: the equipment-assisted training team at high temperature (HE); the equipment-assisted training team under normal hot weather (NE); the high-intensity interval training team at high temperature (HIIT), and the control team without training. A standard heat tolerance test (HTT) was conducted before (HTT-1st) and after (HTT-2nd) the training to judge whether the participants met the heat acclimation (HA) criteria. Results: We found that the participants in both HE and NE teams had significantly higher acclimation rates (HA/total population) than whom in the HIIT team. The effects of HAT on the participants of the HE team outperformed that of the NE team. In the HA group, the differences of physiological indicators and plasma organ damage biomarkers (ALT, ALP, creatinine, LDH, α-HBDH and cholinesterase) before and after HTT-2nd were significantly reduced to those during HTT-1st, but the differences of immune factors (IL-10, IL-6, CXCL2, CCL4, CCL5, and CCL11) elevated. The composition, metabolism, and pathogenicity of gut microbes changed significantly, with a decreased proportion of potentially pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia-Shigella and Lactococcus) and increased probiotics (Dorea, Blautia, and Lactobacillus) in the HA group. Training for a longer time in a high temperature and humidity showed beneficial effects for intestinal probiotics. Conclusion: These findings revealed that pathogenic gut bacteria decrease while probiotics increase following HA, with elevated immune factors and reduced organ damage during heat stress, thereby improving the body's heat adaption.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role in the formation of ground-level ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), and they have been key issues in current air pollution prevention and control in China. Considerable attention has been paid to industrial activities due to their large and relatively complex VOCs emissions. The present research aims to provide a comprehensive review on whole-process control of industrial VOCs, which mainly includes source reduction, collection enhancement and end-pipe treatments. Lower VOCs materials including water-borne ones are the keys to source substitution in industries related to coating and solvent usage, leak detection and repair (LDAR) should be regarded as an efficient means of source reduction in refining, petrochemical and other chemical industries. Several types of VOCs collection methods such as gas-collecting hoods, airtight partitions and others are discussed, and airtight collection at negative pressure yields the best collection efficiency. Current end-pipe treatments like UV oxidation, low-temperature plasma, activated carbon adsorption, combustion, biodegradation, and adsorption-combustion are discussed in detail. Finally, several recommendations are made for future advanced treatment and policy development in industrial VOCs emission control.

Background: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is essential for maintaining intestinal epithelial homeostasis. Although cold water-immersion restraint (CWIR) stress is commonly used to induce in vivo gastric injury, it also affects intestinal epithelial permeability. Although IL-6 is increased in response to acute physiological and psychological stress, its exact effects on the pathophysiology of the intestinal epithelium in response to acute CWIR stress remain unknown. Methods: We used IL-6 knockout (KO) mice with acute CWIR modeling to investigate the effect of IL-6 deficiency on intestinal epithelial morphology and pathological damage using histological staining assays under the acute stress. We detected jejunal epithelial apoptosis using TUNEL and standard molecular experiments. Results: CWIR caused intestinal epithelial damage, which was alleviated by the absence of IL-6, as evidenced by morphological changes and goblet cell and intestinal permeability alteration. IL-6 KO also reduced CWIR-mediated inflammatory levels and improved stress defense. Meanwhile, IL-6 deficiency decreased the intestinal epithelial apoptosis induced by CWIR administration. This IL-6 KO-led effect depended more on mitochondrial AIF signaling rather than the traditional caspase pathway. Conclusion: As a result, we concluded that acute CWIR-induced severe intestinal damage and jejunal epithelium apoptosis could be alleviated by IL-6 deficiency, implying a protective effect of IL-6 deficiency on the intestines under acute stress. The findings shed new light on treating CWIR-induced intestinal disorders by inhibiting IL-6 signaling.
