RESUMO

The community structure and co-occurrence pattern of eukaryotic algae in Yuncheng Salt Lake were analyzed based on marker gene analysis of the 18S rRNA V4 region to understand the species composition and their synergistic adaptations to the environmental factors in different salinity waters. The results showed indicated that the overall algal composition of Yuncheng Salt Lake showed a Chlorophyta-Pyrrophyta-Bacillariophyta type structure. Chlorophyta showed an absolute advantage in all salinity waters. In addition, Cryptophyta dominated in the least saline waters; Pyrrophyta and Bacillariophyta were the dominant phyla in the waters with salinity ranging from 13.2 to 18%. Picochlorum, Nannochloris, Ulva, and Tetraselmis of Chlorophyta, Biecheleria and Oxyrrhis of Pyrrophyta, Halamphora, Psammothidium, and Navicula of Bacillariophyta, Guillardia and Rhodomonas of Cryptophyta were not observed in previous surveys of the Yuncheng Salt Lake, suggesting that the algae are undergoing a constant turnover as the water environment of the Salt Lake continues to change. The network diagram demonstrated that the algae were strongly influenced by salinity, NO3-, and pH, changes in these environmental factors would lead to changes in the algal community structure, thus affecting the stability of the network structure.

RESUMO

Complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) can provide important information regarding the molecular evolution and phylogenetic relationships of marine invertebrates, especially in Brachyura. Only one Cancroidea species of mitogenomes has been sequenced before; in this research, the mitogenomic characteristics of Metacarcinus magister (Cancridae: Cancroidea) are newly studied. The length of the M. magister mitogenome was 48,820 bp, and it contained the typical 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. We performed a series of analyses on the characteristics of the mNCR of M. magister. The phylogenetics, life circumstances, and selective pressures were all analyzed to explain the formation of this length, which revealed the length of the M. magister mitogenome to be approximately three times greater than the normal length of Brachyuran mitogenomes. Phylogenetic analyses based on a dataset of 215 Decapodan mitogenomes indicated that all Eriphioidea crabs were clustered together as a group. Moreover, the rearrangement mechanism of the Cancroidea species was predicted to provide stronger evidence for the phylogenetic analysis. In general, the results obtained in this study will contribute to a better understanding of the cause of the unusual length of the M. magister mitogenome and provide new insights into the phylogeny of Brachyura.

RESUMO

Fruit cracking affects both the yield and economic efficiency of citrus; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, this study focused on resistant and susceptible cultivars to identify the mechanisms underlying fruit cracking. The results showed that in 'Mingrijian', pectin morphological transformation and hemicellulose and lignin degradation in the pericarp were important contributing factors. During the critical fruit-cracking period (115-150 days after flowering), the water-soluble pectin, protopectin, and lignin contents in the pericarp of 'Daya' presented inverse changes relative to those in 'Mingrijian', thus enhancing the mechanical properties and resistance of pericarp. From 115 to 150 days after flowering, the soluble sugar content in the pulp of 'Mingrijian' increased rapidly by 97.35%, aiding in pulp water absorption and expansion. Moreover, the soluble protein content in the pericarp of 'Mingrijian' exhibited a declining trend and was lower than that of 'Daya', thus affecting the overall metabolism. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the pericarp of 'Mingrijian' gradually decreased from 115 to 180 days after flowering, while the peroxidase (POD) activity remained at a low level, resulting in weaker antioxidant capacity and lower environmental resistance. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of citrus fruit cracking, laying the foundation for preventive and control strategies.

RESUMO

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second major stroke type, with high incidence, high disability rate, and high mortality. At present, there is no effective and reliable treatment for ICH. As a result, most patients have a poor prognosis. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is the fastest treatment method to remove hematoma, which is characterized by less trauma and easy operation. Some studies have confirmed the safety of MIS, but there are still no reports showing that it can significantly improve the functional outcome of ICH patients. Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is considered to be an important part of successful treatment in traumatic brain diseases. By monitoring ICP in real time, keeping stable ICP could help patients with craniocerebral injury get a good prognosis. In the course of MIS treatment of ICH patients, keeping ICP stable may also promote patient recovery. In this review, we will take ICP monitoring as the starting point for an in-depth discussion.

RESUMO

In order to investigate the rheological properties and shear thinning principles of supramolecular drilling fluids, the salt-responsive supramolecular ionomer polymers with different components were designed and the change in shear viscosity of supramolecular polymer drilling fluid system with shear rate was studied using the molecular dynamics simulation method. The result indicated that the ionic supramolecular polymer drilling fluid system exhibits better self-assembly performance than the nonionic acrylamide drilling fluid system. Moreover, the drilling fluid system exhibits the best rheological properties and self-assembly performance when the feeding ratios of the three monomers in the two polymers are m : n : o = 5 : 90 : 5 and m : n : o = 30 : 40 : 30, respectively. The shear viscosity recovery rate of the #3 ionic supramolecular polymer drilling fluid system at different burial depths (1-5 km) is >87%, where the shear viscosity is mainly determined at ambient pressure. The shear thinning phenomenon of the supramolecular polymer drilling fluid system occurs because of the combined effect of the polymer molecular orientation and entanglement structure. When the shear rate is above a critical value, the polymer molecules are oriented along the flow field direction, decreasing the shear viscosity. However, when the shear rate is very high, the entanglement structure of the molecules is opened and the mesh structure of the fluids is disrupted, decreasing the shear viscosity of the drilling fluid.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aortic dissection (AD) is a serious and fatal vascular disease. The earlier the condition of AD patients can be assessed precisely, the more scientifically controlled the patient's condition will be. Therefore, timely and accurate diagnosis is significant for AD. Blood biomarker testing as a method of liquid biopsy can improve the diagnostic efficiency of AD. This study conducted a systematic review of the current blood diagnostic biomarkers of AD. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase electronic databases were systematically searched from inception to January 1, 2023, using the terms "aortic dissection", "serum", "plasma" and "diagnosis". Stata 12.0 software was used to perform Random effects meta-analysis was performed using Stata 12.0 software to determine the effect sizes and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Then, a summary receiver operator characteristic (SROC) curve was drawn, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was calculated. RESULTS: D-dimer had the best sensitivity and AUC for AD, with values of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.93-0.98) and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.93-0.97), respectively. The sensitivity and AUC values for D-dimer with a cut-off value of 500 ng/mL were 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95-0.99) and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.92-0.96), respectively. In contrast, microRNA had a better specificity value for AD, at 0.79 (95% CI: 0.73-0.83). CONCLUSIONS: D-dimer and microRNA have good accuracy in the diagnosis of AD, but the specificity of D-dimer is worse, and studies of microRNA are insufficient. The combination of different biomarkers can improve the diagnostic accuracy. Other blood biomarkers are related to the pathological progression of AD and can be selected according to pathological progress.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and prognostic significance of common cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities in patients with TP53-mutated and non-TP53-mutated acute myeloid leukemia (AML). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 326 patients with newly diagnosed AML hospitalized in our institution between October 2015 and June 2021. Classification variables were reported as percentages and compared by χ2 tests. Survival rates were evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: The incidence of TP53 mutations in AML patients in this clinic was 9.8%, of whom 87.5% patients were over 50 years old. The common concurrent mutations of TP53 were DNMT3A, IDH2, NRAS and TET2. Patients with a TP53 variant allele frequency (VAF) ≤ 40% had better overall survival (OS) than patients with a VAF >40%. Compared with non-TP53-mutated patients, significantly more TP53-mutated patients were gene-fusion negative, +mar, - 7/del (7q), - 5/del (5q), - 17/17p-, - 12/12p-, incomplete (inc) karyotype, or complex karyotype (CK), and had FLT3-ITD or IDH2 mutations, as well as a lower complete remission (CR) rate (31.3%) and higher recurrence rate (80.0%). The 2-year OS rates of TP53-mutated and non-TP53-mutated patients were 18.8% and 47.3%, respectively (P < 0.001). Univariate analysis showed that non-TP53-mutated patients with MLL family gene fusion, +mar or - 17/17p - karyotype, and FLT3-ITD mutations had a poor prognosis, while t(8; 21) karyotype was associated with a better prognosis. TP53-mutated patients with - 7/del (7q) or - 5/del (5q) karyotype had a poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: The cytogenetic and molecular landscapes differed between TP53-mutated and non-TP53-mutated patients, and some abnormalities had different values between them.

RESUMO

Field-effect phototransistors feature gate voltage modulation, allowing dynamic performance control and significant signal amplification. A field-effect phototransistor can be designed to be inherently either unipolar or ambipolar in its response. However, conventionally, once a field-effect phototransistor has been fabricated, its polarity cannot be changed. Herein, a polarity-tunable field-effect phototransistor based on a graphene/ultrathin Al2O3/Si structure is demonstrated. Light can modulate the gating effect of the device and change the transfer characteristic curve from unipolar to ambipolar. This photoswitching in turn produces a significantly improved photocurrent signal. The introduction of an ultrathin Al2O3 interlayer also enables the phototransistor to achieve a responsivity in excess of 105 A/W, a 3 dB bandwidth of 100 kHz, a gain-bandwidth product of 9.14 × 1010 s-1, and a specific detectivity of 1.91 × 1013 Jones. This device architecture enables the gain-bandwidth trade-off in current field-effect phototransistors to be overcome, demonstrating the feasibility of simultaneous high-gain and fast-response photodetection.

RESUMO

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) has been one of the major types of cognitive impairment. Blood-brain barrier damage plays an essential part in the pathogenesis of VCI. At present, the treatment of VCI is mainly focused on prevention, with no drug clinically approved for the treatment of VCI. This study aimed to investigate the effects of DL-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) on VCI rats. A modified bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (mBCCAO) model was applied to mimic VCI. The feasibility of the mBCCAO model was verified by laser Doppler, 13N-Ammonia-Positron Emission Computed Tomography (PET), and Morris Water Maze. Subsequently, the Morris water maze experiment, Evans blue staining, and western blot of tight junction protein were performed to evaluate the effect of different doses of NBP (40 mg/kg, 80 mg/kg) on the improvement of cognitive impairment and BBB disruption induced by mBCCAO. Immunofluorescence was employed to examine the changes in pericyte coverage in the mBCCAO model and the effect of NBP on pericyte coverage was preliminarily explored. mBCCAO surgery led to obvious cognitive impairment and the decrease of whole cerebral blood flow, among which the blood flow in the cortex, hippocampus and thalamus brain regions decreased more significantly. High-dose NBP (80 mg/kg) improved long-term cognitive function in mBCCAO rats, alleviated Evans blue leakage and reduced the loss of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Claudin-5) in the early course of the disease, thereby exerting a protective effect on the blood-brain barrier. No significant changes in pericyte coverage were observed after mBCCAO. High-dose NBP improved cognitive function in mBCCAO rats. High-dose NBP protected the integrity of BBB by upregulating TJ protein expression, rather than regulating pericyte coverage ratio. NBP could be a potential drug for the treatment of VCI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The limited understanding of the pathological mechanisms of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and the absence of successful therapies lead to poor prognoses for patients with ICH. Dihydromyricetin (DMY) has many physiological functions, such as regulating lipid and glucose metabolism and modulating tumorigenesis. Moreover, DMY has been proven to be an effective treatment of neuroprotection. However, no reports to date have been made regarding the impact of DMY on ICH. PURPOSE: This investigation aimed to identify the role of DMY on ICH in mice and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS/RESULTS: This study demonstrated that DMY treatment effectively reduced hematoma size and cell apoptosis of brain tissue, and improved neurobehavioral outcomes in mice with ICH. Transcriptional and network pharmacological analyses revealed that lipocalin-2 (LCN2) was a potential target of DMY in ICH. After ICH, LCN2 mRNA and protein expression in brain tissue increased and DMY could inhibit the expression of LCN2. The rescue experiment with the implementation of LCN2 overexpression verified these observations. Furthermore, after DMY treatment, there was a significant decrease in cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), phospho-extracellular regulated protein kinase (P-ERK), iron deposition, and the number of abnormal mitochondria, which were reversed by the overexpression of LCN2. Proteomics analysis suggests that SLC3A2 may be the downstream target of LCN2, promoting ferroptosis. Finally, LCN2 was shown to bind to SLC3A2 and regulate the downstream glutathione (GSH) synthesis and Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression and glutathione (GSH) synthesis, as determined by molecular docking and co-immunoprecipitation analysis. CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed for the first time that DMY might offer a favorable treatment for ICH through its action on LCN2. The possible mechanism for this could be that DMY reverses the inhibitory effect of LCN2 on the system Xc-, lessening ferroptosis in brain tissue. The findings of this study offer a greater understanding of how DMY affects ICH at a molecular level and could be conducive to developing therapeutic targets for ICH.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Intracranial hemorrhage is the second most common stroke subtype following ischemic stroke and usually induces high mortality and disability. Here, we conducted a retrospective study to establish a nomogram clinical prediction model. METHODS: First, the baseline data of patients who presented to our hospital in 2015-2021 were collected and compared (789 patients for the training cohort and 378 patients for the validation cohort). Second, univariate and binary logistic analyses were performed to screen out alternative indicators. Finally, a clinical prediction model by nomogram was established that included such indicators to estimate the prognosis of intracranial hemorrhage patients. RESULTS: Univariate logistic analysis was used to screen several possible impact factors, including hypertension, hematoma volume, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) score, irregular shape, uneven density, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) relation, fibrinogen, D-dimer, low density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), creatinine, total protein, hemoglobin (HB), white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil blood cell (NBC), lymphocyte blood cell (LBC), the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), surgery, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) rate, hospital day, and hypertension control. Further binary logistic analysis revealed that ICH score (p = 0.036), GCS score (p = 0.000), irregular shape (p = 0.000), uneven density (p = 0.002), IVH relation (p = 0.014), surgery (p = 0.000) were independent indicators to construct a nomogram clinical prediction model. The C statistic was 0.840. CONCLUSIONS: ICH score, GCS score, irregular shape, uneven density, IVH relation, surgery are easily available indicators to assist neurologists in formulating the most appropriate therapy for every intracranial hemorrhage patient. Further large prospective clinical trials are needed to obtain more integrated and reliable conclusions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Antiplatelet medications are increasingly being used for primary and secondary prevention of ischemic attacks owing to the increasing prevalence of ischemic stroke occurrences. Currently, many patients receive antiplatelet therapy (APT) to prevent thromboembolic events. However, long-term use of APT might also lead to an increased occurrence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and affect the prognosis of patients with ICH. Furthermore, some research suggest that restarting APT for patients who have previously experienced ICH may result in rebleeding events. The precise relationship between APT and ICH remains unknown. METHODS: We searched PubMed for the most recent related literature and summarized the findings from various studies. The search terms included "antiplatelet," "intracerebral hemorrhage," "cerebral microbleeds," "hematoma expansion," "recurrent," and "reinitiate." Clinical studies involving human subjects were ultimately included and interpreted in this review, and animal studies were not discussed. RESULTS: When individuals are administered APT, the risk of thrombotic events should be weighted against the risk of bleeding. In general, for some patients' concomitant with risk factors of thrombotic events, the advantages of antiplatelet medication may outweigh the inherent risk of rebleeding. However, the use of antiplatelet medications for other patients with a higher risk of bleeding should be carefully evaluated and closely monitored. In the future, a quantifiable system for assessing thrombotic risk and bleeding risk will be necessary. After evaluation, the appropriate time to restart APT for ICH patients should be determined to prevent underlying ischemic stroke events. According to the present study results and expert experience, most patients now restart APT at around 1 week following the onset of ICH. Nevertheless, the precise time to restart APT should be chosen on a case-by-case basis as per the patient's risk of embolic events and recurrent bleeding. More compelling evidence-based medicine evidence is needed in the future. CONCLUSION: This review thoroughly discusses the relationship between APT and the development of ICH, the impact of APT on the course and prognosis of ICH patients, and the factors influencing the decision to restart APT after ICH. However, different studies' conclusions are inconsistent due to the differences in quality control. To support future clinical decisions, more large-scale randomized controlled trials are required.

RESUMO

d-Tagatose is one of the several healthy sweeteners that can be a substitute for sucrose and fructose in our daily life. Whole cell-catalyzed phosphorylation and dephosphorylation previously reported by our group afford a thermodynamic-driven strategy to achieve tagatose production directly from starch with high product yields. Nonetheless, the poor structural stability of cells and difficulty in biocatalyst recycling restrict its practical application. Herein, an efficient and stable semiartificial cell factory (SACF) was developed by constructing an organosilica network (OSN) artificial shell on the cells bearing five thermophilic enzymes to produce tagatose. The OSN artificial shell, the thickness of which can be regulated by changing the tetraethyl silicate concentration, exhibited tunable permeability and superior mechanical strength. In contrast with cells, SACFs showed a relative activity of 99.5% and an extended half-life from 33.3 to 57.8 h. Over 50% of initial activity was retained after 20 reuses. The SACFs can catalyze seven consecutive reactions with tagatose yields of over 40.7% in field applications.

RESUMO

Mechanically strong and ductile load-carrying materials are needed in all sectors, from transportation to lightweight design to safe infrastructure. Yet, a grand challenge is to unify both features in one material. We show that a plain medium-manganese steel can be processed to have a tensile strength >2.2 gigapascals at a uniform elongation >20%. This requires a combination of multiple transversal forging, cryogenic treatment, and tempering steps. A hierarchical microstructure that consists of laminated and twofold topologically aligned martensite with finely dispersed retained austenite simultaneously activates multiple micromechanisms to strengthen and ductilize the material. The dislocation slip in the well-organized martensite and the gradual deformation-stimulated phase transformation synergistically produce the high ductility. Our nanostructure design strategy produces 2 gigapascal-strength and yet ductile steels that have attractive composition and the potential to be produced at large industrial scales.

RESUMO

Radioiodine refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RR-DTC) is the main factor adversely affecting the overall survival rate of patients with thyroid cancer. The aim of the present study was to investigate the underlying molecular mechanism of pathogenesis of RR-DTC and to explore novel therapeutic targets for clinical treatment. A proteomic analysis was performed using the tumor tissues of patients with RR-DTC. A total of 6 metastatic lymph nodes were collected during lymph node dissection, 3 from patients with RR-DTC and 3 from patients with papillary thyroid cancer. The expression of chitinase-3-like 1 (CHI3L1) and sodium-iodine symporter (NIS) in the tumor tissue was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Western blotting was used to detect the expression of CHI3L1, phosphorylated (p)-MEK and p-ERK1/2 in PTC-K1 cells transfected with CHI3L1 overexpression vector. The proteomic analysis identified 665 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), including 327 upregulated and 338 downregulated proteins in the RR-DTC group, which were enriched in 59 signaling pathways by Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database analysis. In particular, CHI3L1 was demonstrated to be significantly upregulated in RR-DTC as evidenced by quantitative proteomic analysis and IHC. Western blotting suggested that the overexpression of CHI3L1 activated the MEK/ERK1/2 signaling pathway, which may lead to NIS dysfunction. In conclusion, the present study suggests that CHI3L1 is a potential molecular target for the radiotherapy of patients with RR-DTC.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of delayed versus early renal replacement therapy (RRT) initiation for patients with AKI. METHODS: Related RCTs of RRT initiated at different times published on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched. RESULTS: Fifteen RCTs studies with 5395 patients were included. The results showed that the 28-day mortality (RR 1.01; 95% CI 0.94 ~ 1.08; p = 0.80), 60-day mortality (RR 1.00; 95% CI 0.91 ~ 1.11; p = 0.93), 90-day mortality (RR 1.01; 95% CI 0.94 ~ 1.08; p = 0.80), dialysis dependence among survivors (RR 0.67; 95% CI 0.40 ~ 1.13; p = 0.13), length of ICU stay (RR -1.32; 95% CI -3.26 ~ 0.62; p = 0.18) and length of hospital stay among survivors(RR -0.98; 95% CI -2.89 ~ 0.92; p = 0.31) were not significantly different between the two groups. In addition, early initiation of RRT increases the incidence of hypotension (RR 1.42, 95% CI 1.23 ~ 1.63; p < 0.00001) and infectious (RR 1.36; 95% CI 1.03 ~ 1.80; p = 0.03) events. CONCLUSION: Early initiation of RRT cannot improve the prognosis and benefit patients.

RESUMO

Cold storage preserves lemon fruit quality; however, it can result in significant chilling injury (CI). The effects of pre- and post-harvest methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatments at four concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mM) on CI and sensory quality of lemons during 80 d of storage at 7-10 °C were investigated. Both pre- and post-harvest MeJA treatments reduced CI, weight loss (WL) and maintained higher firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), and total acidity (TA) than in the controls. Antioxidant enzyme activities decreased in the control fruit but increased in both pre- and post-harvest MeJA-treated fruit. In addition, phospholipase D (PLD) and lipoxygenase (LOX) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were higher in the control than in the MeJA-treated fruit. Pre-harvest MeJA treatment generally preserved fruit better than post-harvest MeJA treatment, with the best results observed when MeJA was applied at 0.3 mM, which enhanced the antioxidant system of the lemon fruits, thus reducing the post-harvest incidence of chilling injury. These results have important implications for improved fruit quality post-harvest.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion primarily aims to improve oxygen transport and tissue oxygenation. The transfusion strategy based on haemoglobin concentration could not accurately reflect cellular metabolism. The ratio of venous-arterial carbon dioxide tension difference to arterial-venous oxygen content difference (P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2) is a good indicator of cellular hypoxia. We aim to explore the influence of P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2 as an RBC transfusion trigger on outcomes in septic shock patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is a single-centre prospective cohort study. We consecutively enrol adult septic shock patients requiring RBC transfusion at intensive care unit (ICU) admission or during ICU stay. P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2 will be recorded before and 1 hour after each transfusion. The primary outcome is ICU mortality. Binary logistic regression analyses will be performed to detect the independent association between P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2 and ICU mortality. A cut-off value for P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2 will be obtained by maximising the Youden index with the receiver operator characteristic curve. According to this cut-off value, patients included will be divided into two groups: one with the P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2 >cut-off and the other with the P(v-a)CO2/C(a-v)O2 ≤cut off. Differences in clinical outcomes between the two groups will be assessed after propensity matching. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of Affiliated Hospital of Weifang Medical University (wyfy-2021-ky-059). Findings will be disseminated through conference presentations and peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2100051748.

RESUMO

Metallic bismuth is here studied as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The details of electrochemical redox reactions, rate performance and cycled life were investigated using relatively high mass loading electrodes in two- and three-electrode full-cells. It demonstrated that the rate capability of bismuth anodes with high mass loading are not as good as indicated in previous literatures where low mass loading electrodes were used. It also indicated that the resistances causing a faltering rate performance may be connected to a loss in particle contact during desodiation. Efforts were also made to study the different electrochemical processes that occur during early cycles. Less advantageous characteristics of bismuth electrodes are also discussed. For example, several different electrolyte solutions were tested for compatibility with the bismuth system, where only glyme-based solutions seemed to facilitate robust cycling.
