BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with hypervascular spinal tumors may have severe blood loss during tumor resection, which increases the risks of perioperative morbidity and mortality. However, the preoperative evaluation of tumor vascularity may be challenging; moreover, the reliability of the data obtained in conventional preoperative noninvasive imaging is debatable. In this study, we compared conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and subtraction computed tomography angiography (CTA) in terms of their performance in vascularity evaluation. The catheter digital subtraction angiography (DSA) technique was used as a reference standard. METHODS: This study included 123 consecutive patients with spinal tumor who underwent subtraction CTA, catheter DSA, and subsequent surgery between October 2015 and October 2021. Data regarding qualitative and semiquantitative subtraction CTA parameters and conventional MRI signs were collected for comparison with tumor vascularity graded through catheter DSA. The diagnostic performance of qualitative CTA, quantitative CTA, and conventional MRI in assessing spinal tumor vascularity was analyzed. RESULTS: Qualitative subtraction CTA was the best noninvasive imaging modality in terms of diagnostic performance (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUROC], 0.95). Quantitative CTA was relatively inferior (AUROC, 0.87). MRI results had low reliability (AUROC, 0.51 to 0.59). Intratumoral hemorrhage and prominent foraminal venous plexus were found to be the specific signs for hypervascularity (specificity 93.2%). CONCLUSIONS: Qualitative subtraction CTA offers the highest diagnostic value in evaluating spinal tumor vascularity, compared to quantitative CTA and MRI. Although conventional MRI may not be a reliable approach, certain MRI signs may have high specificity, which may be crucial for assessing spinal tumor vascularity.

Monitoring the healing progress of diabetic foot ulcers is a challenging process. Accurate segmentation of foot ulcers can help podiatrists to quantitatively measure the size of wound regions to assist prediction of healing status. The main challenge in this field is the lack of publicly available manual delineation, which can be time consuming and laborious. Recently, methods based on deep learning have shown excellent results in automatic segmentation of medical images, however, they require large-scale datasets for training, and there is limited consensus on which methods perform the best. The 2022 Diabetic Foot Ulcers segmentation challenge was held in conjunction with the 2022 International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention, which sought to address these issues and stimulate progress in this research domain. A training set of 2000 images exhibiting diabetic foot ulcers was released with corresponding segmentation ground truth masks. Of the 72 (approved) requests from 47 countries, 26 teams used this data to develop fully automated systems to predict the true segmentation masks on a test set of 2000 images, with the corresponding ground truth segmentation masks kept private. Predictions from participating teams were scored and ranked according to their average Dice similarity coefficient of the ground truth masks and prediction masks. The winning team achieved a Dice of 0.7287 for diabetic foot ulcer segmentation. This challenge has now entered a live leaderboard stage where it serves as a challenging benchmark for diabetic foot ulcer segmentation.

Aqueous electrolytes with a low voltage window (1.23 V) and prone side reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction and cathode dissolution, compromise the advantages of high safety and low cost of aqueous metal-ion batteries. Herein, introducing catechol (CAT) into the aqueous electrolyte, an outer sphere electron transfer mechanism is initiated to inhibit the water reactivity, achieving an electrochemical window of 3.24 V. In a typical Zn-ion battery, the outer sphere electrons jump from CAT to Zn2+-H2O at a geometrically favorable situation and between the solvation molecules without breaking or forming chemical bonds as that of the inner sphere electron transfers. The excited state π-π stacking further leads to the outer sphere electron transfer occurring at the electrolyte/electrode interface. This high-voltage electrolyte allows achieving an operating voltage two times higher than that of the usual aqueous electrolytes and provides almost the highest energy density and power density for the V2O5-based aqueous Zn-ion full batteries. The Zn//Zn symmetric battery delivers a 4000 h lifespan, and the Zn//V2O5 full battery achieves a ∼380 W h kg-1 energy density and a 92% capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 1 A g-1 and a 2.4 V output voltage. This outer sphere electron transfer strategy paves the way for designing high-voltage aqueous electrolytes.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and therefore the identification of the modifiable risk factors [such as exposure to vapors, gases, dust and fumes (VGDF)] for accelerate disease progression has important significance. Methods: We conducted COPD surveillance in six cities of southern China between 2014 and 2019. We recorded the diagnosis of chronic bronchitis, respiratory symptoms, occupational exposure to VGDF and other covariates by using a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression and multivariate linear regression model were adopted for analysis. We performed sensitivity analyses based on two methods of propensity score (PS) methods to evaluate the robustness of our results. Results: A total of 7,418 participants were included. Cough [odds ratios (ORs): 1.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22 to 2.08] and phlegm (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.85) correlated significantly with exposure to dust. There was an increased risk of cough (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.07) for occupational exposure to gas/vapor/fume. Dual exposure to dust and gas/vapor/fume was associated with a significantly increased risk of chronic bronchitis (OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.20 to 2.52), cough (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.79) and phlegm (OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 1.24 to 1.79). In 5,249 participants with complete data of spirometry, gas/vapor/fume was associated with a decreased ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) (ß: -1.05, 95% CI: -1.85 to -0.26) and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF) (ß: -0.15, 95% CI: -0.23 to -0.07). Dual exposure to dust and gas/vapor/fume was significantly associated with decreased FEV1/FVC (ß: -0.74, 95% CI: -1.28 to -0.20) and MMEF (ß: -0.06, 95% CI: -0.12 to -0.01). Results of sensitivity analysis were not materially changed. Conclusions: VGDF exposure is associated with chronic bronchitis, respiratory symptoms and decreased lung function, suggesting that VGDF contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of COPD.

As a unique and native conifer in China, Platycladus orientalis is widely used in soil erosion control, garden landscapes, timber, and traditional Chinese medicine. However, due to the lack of reference genome and transcriptome, it is limited to the further molecular mechanism research and gene function mining. To develop a full-length reference transcriptome, tissues from five different parts of P. orientalis and four cone developmental stages were sequenced and analyzed by single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing through the PacBio platform in this study. Overall, 37,111 isoforms were detected by PacBio with an N50 length of 2,317 nt, an average length of 1,999 bp, and the GC content of 41.81%. Meanwhile, 36,120 coding sequences, 5,645 simple sequence repeats (SSRs), 1,201 non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and 182 alternative splicing (AS) events with five types were identified using the results obtained from the PacBio transcript isoforms. Furthermore, 1,659 transcription factors (TFs) were detected and belonged to 51 TF families. A total of 35,689 transcripts (96.17%) were annotated through the NCBI nr, KOG, Swiss-Prot and KEGG databases, and 385 transcript isoforms related to 8 types of hormones were identified incorporated into plant hormone signal transduction pathways. The assembly and revelation of the full-length transcriptome of P. orientalis offer a pioneering insight for future investigations into gene function and genetic breeding within Platycladus species.

Postoperative wound infections (PWIs) pose a significant challenge in colorectal cancer surgeries, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased morbidity. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination of Jie Geng and Huang Qi in reducing PWIs following colorectal cancer surgeries. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we focused on seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1256 patients, examining the incidence of PWIs within 30 days post-surgery, alongside secondary outcomes such as length of hospital stay and antibiotic use. The analysis revealed a significant reduction in PWI incidence in the TCM-treated group compared to controls, with a Risk Ratio of 0.21 (95% CI: 0.14 to 0.30, p < 0.01), a notable decrease in hospital stay (Mean Difference: 1.2 days, 95% CI: 0.15 to 1.28 days, p < 0.01) and a significant reduction in antibiotic use (Risk Ratio: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.16 to 0.36, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that Jie Geng and Huang Qi in TCM could be an effective adjunct in postoperative care for colorectal cancer surgeries, underscoring the need for further high-quality RCTs to substantiate these results and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Dysplasia and invasive defects in early trophoblasts contribute to unexplained recurrent miscarriages (URMs). Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) inhibits migration and invasion in some cancer cells, but its role in pregnancy-related diseases remains unresolved. Here, we found that MANF levels in the peripheral blood and aborted tissue of URM women were higher than in normal controls, irrespective of pregnancy or miscarriage. We confirm the interaction between MANF and nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1) in trophoblasts of URM patients, which increases the ubiquitination degradation of NPM1, leading to upregulation of the p53 signaling pathway and inhibition of cell proliferation, migration, and invasion ability. Using a URM mouse model, we found that MANF downregulation resulted in reduced fetal resorption; however, concomitant NPM1 downregulation led to increased abortion rates. These data indicate that MANF triggers miscarriage via NPM1 downregulation and p53 activation. Thus, MANF downregulation or disruption of the MANF-NPM1 interaction could be targets for URM therapeutics.

PURPOSES: The influence of gender on the epidemiology of and outcome from SA-AKI in ICU has not been fully clarified. Our aim is to elucidate these differences. METHODS: This study included adult patients with sepsis in MIMIC IV (V 2.2), and propensity matching analysis, cox regression and logistic regression were used to analyze gender differences in incidence, mortality and organ support rate. RESULTS: Of the 24,467 patients included in the cohort, 18,128 were retained after propensity score matching. In the matched cohort, the incidence of SA-AKI in males is higher than that in females (58.6% vs. 56.2%; P = 0.001).males were associated with a higher risk of SA-AKI (OR:1.07(1.01-1.14), P = 0.026;adjusted OR:1.07(1.01-1.14), P < 0.033).In SA-AKI patients, males were associated with a lower risk of ICU mortality(HR:0.803(0.721-0.893), P < 0.001;adjusted HR:0.836(0.746-0.937), P = 0.002) and in-hospital mortality(HR: 0.820(0.748-0.899), P < 0.001;adjusted HR:0.853(0.775-0.938), P = 0.003).there were no statistically significant differences between male and female patients in 1-year all-cause mortality (36.9% vs. 35.8%, P = 0.12), kidney replacement therapy rate (7.8% vs.7.4%, P = 0.547), mechanical ventilation rate 64.8% vs.63.9%, P = 0.369), and usage of vasoactive drugs (55.4% vs. 54.6%, P = 0.418). CONCLUSIONS: Gender may affect the incidence and outcomes of SA-AKI, further research is needed to fully understand the impact of gender on SA-AKI patients.

Gastric cancer results in great cancer mortality worldwide, and inducing ferroptosis dramatically improves the malignant phenotypes of gastric cancer. DNA polymerase epsilon subunit 2 (POLE2) plays indispensable roles in tumorigenesis; however, its involvement and molecular basis in ferroptosis and gastric cancer are not clear. Human gastric cancer cells were infected with lentiviral vectors to knock down or overexpress POLE2, and cell ferroptosis was detected. To further validate the involvement of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), lentiviral vectors were used. POLE2 expression was elevated in human gastric cancer cells and tissues and closely correlated with clinicopathological features in gastric cancer patients. POLE2 knockdown was induced, while POLE2 overexpression inhibited ferroptosis of human gastric cancer cells, thereby modulating the malignant phenotypes of gastric cancer. Mechanistic studies revealed that POLE2 overexpression elevated NRF2 expression and activity and subsequently activated GPX4, which then prevented lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis in human gastric cancer cells. In contrast, either NRF2 or GPX4 silence significantly prevented POLE2 overexpression-mediated inductions of cell proliferation, migration, invasion and inhibition of ferroptosis. POLE2 overexpression inhibits ferroptosis in human gastric cancer cells through activating NRF2/GPX4 pathway, and inhibiting POLE2 may be a crucial strategy to treat gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a rare and potential lethal complication of peritoneal dialysis characterized by bowel obstruction. Surgical enterolysis is the only curative therapy. Currently, there are no tools for predicting postsurgical prognosis. This study aimed to identify a computed tomography (CT) scoring system that could predict mortality after surgery in patients with severe EPS. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients with severe EPS who underwent surgical enterolysis in a tertiary referral medical center. The association of CT score with surgical outcomes including mortality, blood loss, and bowel perforation was analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-four patients who underwent 37 procedures were recruited and divided into a survivor and non-survivor group. The survivor group had higher body mass indices (BMIs, 18.1 vs. 16.7 kg/m2, p = 0.035) and lower CT scores (11 vs. 17, p < 0.001) than the non-survivor group. The receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that a CT score of ≥15 could be considered a cutoff point to predict surgical mortality, with an area under the curve of 0.93, sensitivity of 88.9%, and specificity of 82.1%. Compared with the group with CT scores of <15, the group with CT scores of ≥15 had a lower BMI (19.7 vs. 16.2 kg/m2, p = 0.004), higher mortality (4.2% vs. 61.5%, p < 0.001), greater blood loss (50 vs. 400 mL, p = 0.007), and higher incidence of bowel perforation (12.5% vs. 61.5%, p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: The CT scoring system could be useful in predicting surgical risk in patients with severe EPS receiving enterolysis.

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and inflammation plays a significant role in this process. Renal denervation (RDN) is a novel approach aimed at reducing sympathetic nervous system activity. The role of RDN in the inflammatory response to chronic OSA (COSA) is currently unclear. The main objective was to study inflammatory mechanisms in the rabbit heart with COSA and the effects of RDN. METHODS: Eighteen rabbits were randomized into three groups: sham control, COSA, and COSA-RDN. COSA and COSA-RDN groups received liquid silicone injections, while the sham control group received normal saline. We performed combined surgical and chemical RDN through bilateral retroperitoneal flank incisions in the COSA-RDN group after silicone injections. The inflammatory mechanisms were assessed through immunoblotting, real-time PCR, and ELISA after the experiment. RESULTS: H&E staining showed immune cell infiltration in COSA, which decreased after RDN treatment. The level of α7nAChR was significantly reduced in COSA compared to the sham control but was restored to a similar level in the COSA-RDN group. Furthermore, the expressions of p-JAK2 and p-STAT3 were significantly reduced in COSA but showed an up-regulation following RDN treatment. Similarly, levels of the inflammatory markers IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α were markedly increased in COSA but decreased after RDN therapy. We observed NF-κB activation in the COSA rabbit model, which decreased after RDN treatment, as evidenced by decreased NF-κB expression. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that RDN treatment may prevent COSA-associated heart inflammation via the JAK2-STAT3 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) mutations may be associated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistance in Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) and worse clinical outcomes. However, the clinical significance of DHPS mutations in PCP among non-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients remains unclear. METHODS: Patients with PCP in three tertiary referral hospitals in Taiwan between 2016 and 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Two point mutations, Thr55Ala and Pro57Ser, in the DHPS protein were analysed. Patients with invalid DHPS mutations in the respiratory specimen, chronic respiratory failure, receiving endotracheal intubation for surgical intervention, HIV infection, Pneumocystis jirovecii colonisation, and no lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) data were excluded. The primary outcome was 30-day survival. RESULTS: A total of 215 patients were analysed. Mutants inside DHPS were found in 78 patients (36.3%) and 68 patients (31.6%) died within 30 days. A total of 214 patients (99.5%) received trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole as the first-line treatment. The rates of mechanical ventilation, 30-day, and in-hospital mortality were similar between wild-type and mutant DHPS PCP. After adjusting for important confounders, LDH > 500 µ/L (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 2.448, P = 0.001), pneumonia severity index > 135 mg/dL (aHR = 1.689, P = 0.049), and having solid tumours (aHR = 1.832, P = 0.034) were independently associated with higher mortality. In subgroup analysis, mutant DHPS PCP patients had less 30-day mortality among patients aged > 65 years (P = 0.049), with lymphopenia (P = 0.040), and those without solid tumour (P = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: In non-HIV-infected PCP, point mutants inside DHPS may not be associated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment outcomes. Further prospective large-scale studies are warranted.

PURPOSES: Low HDL-C is associated with an increased risk of sepsis-associated AKI and subsequent decline in eGFR. HDL-C possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and endothelial repair-promoting properties. The use of Apo A-I mimetic peptides, which are the main structural components of HDL-C, has been shown to improve renal function in animal models of sepsis. However, the diagnostic value of low HDL-C in persistent sepsis-associated AKI remains unclear. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study based on MIMIC IV (V 2.2). The study population consisted of all adult septic patients admitted to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Intensive Care Unit from 2008 to 2019, with plasma HDL-C measured within 24 h of ICU admission. The primary endpoint was persistent severe sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) and the secondary endpoint is kidney replacement therapy (KRT). Logistic regression was used to assess the correlation between HDL-C and persistent severe SA-AKI and KRT, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate predictive ability. RESULTS: A total of 604 cases of SA-AKI patients were included in the analysis, among which 88 cases (14.5%) experienced persistent severe SA-AKI. The median (IQR) HDL-C level in the group with persistent severe SA-AKI was lower (33.0 [24.0-45.5]) compared to the non-persistent severe SA-AKI group (42.0 [31.0-53.0]). However, HDL-C showed poor discriminatory ability with an AUROC [95%CI] of 0.62 [0.56-0.69]. Clinical prediction models based on serum creatinine concentration, 24-h creatinine change, APSIIIscore, lactate levels, APTT, and heart rate performed well in predicting persistent severe SA-AKI with an AUROC [95%CI] of 0.876 [0.84-0.91]. However, adding HDL-C to this model did not improve predictive performance. CONCLUSIONS: The plasma HDL-C measured within 24 h after admission to the ICU does not provide a good prediction for persistent severe SA-AKI, and it does not improve the clinical predictive ability compared to conventional variables.

BACKGROUND: White matter (WM) tract alterations are early signs of cognitive impairment in Parkinson disease (PD) patients. Fixel-based analysis (FBA) has advantages over traditional diffusion tensor imaging in managing complex and crossing fibers. We used FBA to measure fiber-specific changes in patients with PD mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and PD normal cognition (PD-NC). METHODS: Seventy-one patients with PD without dementia were included: 39 PD-MCI and 32 PD-NC. All underwent diffusion-weighted imaging, clinical examinations, and tests to evaluate their cognitive function globally and in five cognitive domains. FBA was used to investigate fiber-tract alterations and compare PD-MCI with PD-NC subjects. Correlations with each cognitive test were analyzed. RESULTS: Patients with PD-MCI were significantly older (P = 0.044), had a higher male-to-female ratio (P = 0.006) and total Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale score (P = 0.001). All fixel-based metrics were significantly reduced within the body of the corpus callosum and superior corona radiata in PD-MCI patients (family-wise error-corrected P value < 0.05) compared with PD-NC patients. The cingulum, superior longitudinal fasciculi, and thalamocortical circuit exhibited predominantly fiber-bundle cross-section (FC) changes. In regression analysis, reduced FC values in cerebellar circuits were associated with poor motor function in PD-MCI patients and poor picture-naming ability in PD-NC patients. CONCLUSIONS: PD-MCI patients have significant WM alterations compared with PD-NC patients. FBA revealed these changes in various bundle tracts, helping us to better understand specific WM changes that are functionally implicated in PD cognitive decline. FBA is potentially useful in detecting early cognitive decline in PD.

Animals rapidly acquire surrounding information to perform the appropriate behavior. Although social learning is more efficient and accessible than self-learning for animals, the detailed regulatory mechanism of social learning remains unknown, mainly because of the complicated information transfer between animals, especially for aversive conditioning information transmission. The current study revealed that, during social learning, the neural circuit in observer flies used to process acquired aversive conditioning information from demonstrator flies differs from the circuit used for self-learned classic aversive conditioning. This aversive information transfer is species dependent. Solitary flies cannot learn this information through social learning, suggesting that this ability is not an innate behavior. Neurons used to process and execute avoidance behavior to escape from electrically shocked flies are all in the same brain region, indicating that the fly brain has a common center for integrating external stimuli with internal states to generate flight behavior.

The utilization of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment for modifying substrate surfaces constitutes an easy and simple approach with a potential for diverse applications. This technique was used to modify the surface of a commercial porous expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (ePTFE) film with either dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) or (trimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate chloride (TMAEMA) monomers, aiming to obtain antibacterial ePTFE. Physicochemical analyses of the membranes revealed that DBD successfully enhanced the surface energy and surface charge of the membranes while maintaining high porosity (>75%) and large pore size (>1.0 µm). Evaluation of the bacteria killing-releasing (K-R) function revealed that both DMAEMA and TMAEMA endowed ePTFE with the ability to kill Escherichia coli bacteria. However, only TMAEMA-grafted ePTFE allowed for the release of dead bacteria from the surface upon washing with sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) saline solution, owing to its cationic charge derived from the quaternary amine. Washing with SHMP disturbed the electrostatic force between the polymer brushes and dead bacteria, which caused the release of the dead bacteria. Lastly, dead-end bacteria filtration showed that the TMAEMA-grafted ePTFE was able to kill 99.78% of the bacteria, while approximately 61.55% of bacteria were killed upon contact. The present findings support the feasibility of using DBD plasma treatment for designing surfaces that target bacteria and aid in the containment of disease-causing pathogens.

Poplar is an important afforestation and urban greening species. Poplar leaf development occurs in stages, from young to mature and then from mature to senescent; these are accompanied by various phenotypic and physiological changes. However, the associated transcriptional regulatory network is relatively unexplored. We first used principal component analysis to classify poplar leaves at different leaf positions into two stages: developmental maturity (the stage of maximum photosynthetic capacity); and the stage when photosynthetic capacity started to decline and gradually changed to senescence. The two stages were then further subdivided into five intervals by gene expression clustering analysis: young leaves, the period of cell genesis and functional differentiation (L1); young leaves, the period of development and initial formation of photosynthetic capacity (L3-L7); the period of maximum photosynthetic capacity of functional leaves (L9-L13); the period of decreasing photosynthetic capacity of functional leaves (L15-L27); and the period of senescent leaves (L29). Using a weighted co-expression gene network analysis of regulatory genes, high-resolution spatiotemporal transcriptional regulatory networks were constructed to reveal the core regulators that regulate leaf development. Spatiotemporal transcriptome data of poplar leaves revealed dynamic changes in genes and miRNAs during leaf development and identified several core regulators of leaf development, such as GRF5 and MYB5. This in-depth analysis of transcriptional regulation during leaf development provides a theoretical basis for exploring the biological basis of the transcriptional regulation of leaf development and the molecular design of breeding for delaying leaf senescence.

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 into high-value hydrocarbons and alcohols by using Cu-based catalysts is a promising and attractive technology for CO2 capture and utilization, resulting from their high catalytic activity and selectivity. The mobility and accessibility of active sites in Cu-based catalysts significantly hinder the development of efficient Cu-based catalysts for CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO2RR). Herein, a facile and effective strategy is developed to engineer accessible and structural stable Cu sites by incorporating single atomic Cu into the nitrogen cavities of the host graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as the active sites for CO2-to-CH4 conversion in CO2RR. By regulating the coordination and density of Cu sites in g-C3N4, an optimal catalyst corresponding to a one Cu atom in one nitrogen cavity reaches the highest CH4 Faraday efficiency of 49.04% and produces the products with a high CH4/C2H4 ratio over 9. This work provides the first experimental study on g-C3N4-supported single Cu atom catalyst for efficient CH4 production from CO2RR and suggests a principle in designing highly stable and selective high-efficiency Cu-based catalysts for CO2RR by engineering Cu active sites in 2D materials with porous crystal structures.

Single-atomic transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) structures are promising alternatives toward noble-metal-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis involved in sustainable energy devices. The symmetrical electronic density distribution of the M─N4 moieties, however, leads to unfavorable intermediate adsorption and sluggish kinetics. Herein, a Fe-N-C catalyst with electronic asymmetry induced by one nearest carbon vacancy adjacent to Fe─N4 is conceptually produced, which induces an optimized d-band center, lowered free energy barrier, and thus superior ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E1/2 ) of 0.934 V in a challenging acidic solution and 0.901 V in an alkaline solution. When assembled as the cathode of a Zinc-air battery (ZAB), a peak power density of 218 mW cm-2 and long-term durability up to 200 h are recorded, 1.5 times higher than the noble metal-based Pt/C+RuO2 catalyst. This work provides a new strategy on developing efficient M-N-C catalysts and offers an opportunity for the real-world application of fuel cells and metal-air batteries.
