BACKGROUND: Fatigue is one of the most common neurological symptoms reported post coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. In order to establish effective early intervention strategies, more emphasis should be placed on the correlation between fatigue and cortical neurophysiological changes, especially in healthcare workers, who are at a heightened risk of COVID-19 infection. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted involving 29 COVID-19 medical workers and 24 healthy controls. The assessment included fatigue, sleep and health quality, psychological status, and physical capacity. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was employed to detect activation of brain regions. Bilateral primary motor cortex (M1) excitabilities were measured using single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation. Outcomes were assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months into the disease course. RESULTS: At 1-month post-COVID-19 infection, 37.9% of patients experienced severe fatigue symptoms, dropping to 10.3% at 3 months. Interestingly, the remarkable decreased activation/excitability of bilateral prefrontal lobe (PFC) and M1 were closely linked to fatigue symptoms after COVID-19. Notably, greater increase in M1 region excitability correlated with more significant fatigue improvement. Re-infected patients exhibited lower levels of brain activation and excitability compared to single-infection patients. CONCLUSIONS: Both single infection and reinfection of COVID-19 lead to decreased activation and excitability of the PFC and M1. The degree of excitability improvement in the M1 region correlates with a greater recovery in fatigue. Based on these findings, targeted interventions to enhance and regulate the excitability of M1 may represent a novel strategy for COVID-19 early rehabilitation. The digestion rate of steamed soybean (DRSS), protease activity of koji (PAK) and formaldehyde nitrogen content of moromi (FNCM) are key indicators to monitor soy sauce production. Currently, monitoring these indicators relies on workers' experience, which can sometimes lead to low material utilization rates and even fermentation failures. Near-infrared spectra were collected during soybean steaming, as well as koji and moromi fermentation, using miniature fiber spectrometers. These spectra were optimized using four pretreatment methods, and regression models were constructed using PLS, iPLS, and Si-PLS. The evaluation of models in prediction sets was based on the correlation coefficient (Rp) and root mean square error (RMSEP). Results indicated that Rp = 0.9327, RMSEP = 4.37% for DRSS, Rp = 0.9364, RMSEP = 228 U/g for PAK, and Rp = 0.9237, RMSEP =0.148 g/100 mL for FNCM were obtained. The above results coupling with validation experiments demonstrated that the developed in-situ and real-time spectroscopy system could ensure high-quality soy sauce production.

The emergence of solid-state battery technology presents a potential solution to the dissolution challenges of high-capacity small molecule quinone redox systems. Nonetheless, the successful integration of argyrodite-type Li6PS5Cl, the most promising solid-state electrolyte system, and quinone redox systems remains elusive due to their inherent reactivity. Here, a library of quinone derivatives is selected as model electrode materials to ascertain the critical descriptors governing the (electro)chemical compatibility and subsequently the performances of Li6PS5Cl-based solid-state organic lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Compatibility is attained if the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of the quinone derivative is sufficiently higher than the highest occupied molecular orbital level of Li6PS5Cl. The energy difference is demonstrated to be critical in ensuring chemical compatibility during composite electrode preparation and enable high-efficiency operation of solid-state organic LMBs. Considering these findings, a general principle is proposed for the selection of quinone derivatives to be integrated with Li6PS5Cl, and two solid-state organic LMBs, based on 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzoquinone and 2,3,5,6-tetraamino-1,4-benzoquinone, are successfully developed and tested for the first time. Validating critical factors for the design of organic battery electrode materials is expected to pave the way for advancing the development of high-efficiency and long cycle life solid-state organic batteries based on sulfides electrolytes.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical, imaging, pathologic characteristics and differential diagnosis of solitary pulmonary capillary hemangioma (SPCH). METHODS: Thirty two cases of SPCH were collected and studied, with literature review. RESULTS: This study included 13 males and 19 females, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1.5. The age ranged from 26 to 70 years (median age of 43 years). All patients were asymptomatic at presentation. Lung nodules were incidentally discovered during chest computed tomography (CT). Imaging features included 21 cases with partial solid nodules (PSN), 7 cases with ground-glass nodules (GGN), and 4 cases with solid nodules (SN). Eleven cases were in the left lung lower basal segment, 11 cases in the right lung lower basal segment, 6 cases in the right lung upper anterior segment, and 4 cases in the right lung middle lateral segment. The lower basal segments of the lungs were involved in 22 (11 in each lung) cases (22/32, 68 %). The tumors ranged from 6 to 18 mm (average 10 mm). Macroscopically, 16 cases had clear boundaries, while 16 cases had unclear boundaries, and gray-red or dark brown on cut surfaces. Intraoperative frozen section was performed in 27 cases, with diagnosis of SPCH in 12 and pneumonia or inflammatory lesion in 15. Microscopically, the nodules were composed of densely proliferated and dilated capillaries. The capillary walls were lined with a single layer of flat endothelial cells, without atypical features. Collapsed alveolar septa were replaced by a large number of capillaries. All cases showed proliferating capillaries spreading into the walls of small veins/arteries and bronchi, with 3 cases showing dilated capillaries protruding into the bronchiolar lumens as polyp-like structures. Twenty-six cases (26/32, 81 %) showed proliferating capillaries passed over the interlobular septa. Twenty-six cases (26/32, 81 %) showed irregular intimal thickening of small muscular arteries in the peripheral areas of the lesions, with the thickened intima being cellular or fibrous. In twenty-seven cases (27/32, 84 %) the lesions were located in the subpleura, with 6 cases involving the pleura. CONCLUSION: SPCH is a rare benign lung tumor that mostly occurs in the lung lower basal segments with predominance in females. It usually appears as a ground-glass nodule on CT and is very similar to early-stage lung cancer. Accurate diagnosis requires collaboration of radiologists, surgeons, and pathologists. SPCH should be regarded as an important differential diagnosis of small incidental lung nodules.

In invasive lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), patients with micropapillary (MIP) or solid (SOL) components had a significantly poorer prognosis than those with only lepidic (LEP), acinar (ACI) or papillary (PAP) components. It is interesting to explore the genetic features of different histologic subtypes, especially the highly aggressive components. Based on a cohort of 5,933 patients, this study observed that in different tumor size groups, LUAD with MIP/SOL components showed a different prevalence, and patients with ALK alteration or TP53 mutations had a higher probability of developing MIP/SOL components. To control individual differences, this research used spatial whole-exome sequencing (WES) via laser-capture microdissection of five patients harboring these five coexistent components and identified genetic features among different histologic components of the same tumor. In tracing the evolution of components, we found that titin (TTN) mutation might serve as a crucial intratumor potential driver for MIP/SOL components, which was validated by a cohort of 146 LUAD patients undergoing bulk WES. Functional analysis revealed that TTN mutations enriched the complement and coagulation cascades, which correlated with the pathway of cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. Collectively, the histologic subtypes of invasive LUAD were genetically different, and certain trunk genotypes might synergize with branching TTN mutation to develop highly aggressive components.

BACKGROUND: After spinal cord injury (SCI), a large number of survivors suffer from severe motor dysfunction (MD). Although the injury site is in the spinal cord, excitability significantly decreases in the primary motor cortex (M1), especially in the lower extremity (LE) area. Unfortunately, M1 LE area-targeted repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has not achieved significant motor improvement in individuals with SCI. A recent study reported that the M1 hand area in individuals with SCl contains a compositional code (the movement-coding component of neural activity) that links matching movements from the upper extremities (UE) and the LE. However, the correlation between bilateral M1 hand area excitability and overall functional recovery is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the changes in the excitability of the bilateral M1 hand area after SCI and its correlation with motor recovery, we aim to specify the therapeutic parameters of rTMS for SCI motor rehabilitation. METHODS: This study is a 12-month prospective cohort study. The neurophysiological and overall functional status of the participants will be assessed. The primary outcomes included single-pulse and paired-pulse TMS. The second outcome included functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measurements. Overall functional status included total motor score, modified Ashworth scale score, ASIA Impairment Scale grade, spinal cord independence measure and modified Barthel index. The data will be recorded for individuals with SCI at disease durations of 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months and 12 months. The matched healthy controls will be measured during the same period of time after recruitment. DISCUSSION: The present study is the first to analyze the role of bilateral M1 hand area excitability changes in the evaluation and prediction of overall functional recovery (including motor function and activities of daily living) after SCI, which will further expand the traditional theory of the predominant role of M1, optimize the current rTMS treatment, and explore the brain-computer interface design for individuals with SCI. Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries, renowned for their high theoretical energy density, have garnered significant interest as prime candidates for future electric device development. However, their actual capacity is often unsatisfactory due to the passivation of active sites by solid-phase discharge products. Optimizing the growth and storage of these products is a crucial step in advancing Li-O2 batteries. Here, a fluorine-doped bimetallic cobalt-nickel oxide (CoNiO2- xFx/CC) with an interlaced catalytic surface (ICS) and a corncob-like structure is proposed as an oxygen electrode. Unlike conventional oxide electrodes with a "single adsorption catalytic mechanism," the ICS of CoNiO2- xFx/CC offers a "competitive adsorption catalytic mechanism," where oxygen sites facilitate oxygen conversion while fluorine sites contribute to the growth of Li2O2. This results in a change in Li2O2 morphology from a surface film to toroidal particles, effectively preventing the burial of active sites. Additionally, the unique open architecture aids in the capture and release of oxygen and the formation of well-contacted Li2O2/electrode interfaces, which benefits the complete decomposition of Li2O2 products. Consequently, the Li-O2 battery with a CoNiO2- xFx/CC cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of up to 30923 mAh g-1 and a lifespan exceeding 580 cycles, surpassing most reported metal oxide-based cathodes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the value of shear-wave elastography (SWE) in assessing the response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer. METHODS: In this study, 455 participants with locally advanced rectal cancer who underwent nCRT at our hospital between September 2021 and December 2022 were prospectively enrolled. The participants were randomly divided into training and test cohorts in a 3:2 ratio. Clinical baseline data, endorectal ultrasound examination data, and SWE measurements were collected for all participants. Logistic regression models were used to predict whether rectal cancer after nCRT had a low T staging (ypT 0-2 stage, Model A) and pathological complete response (pCR) (Model B). Paired Chi-square tests were used to compare the diagnostic performances of the radiologists to those of Models A and B. RESULTS: In total, 256 participants were included. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of Models A and B in the test cohort were 0.94 (0.87, 1.00) and 0.88 (0.80, 0.97), respectively. The optimal diagnostic thresholds for Models A and B were 14.9 kPa for peritumoral mesangial Emean and 15.2 kPa for tumor Emean, respectively. The diagnostic performance of the radiologists was significantly lower than that of Models A and B, respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: SWE can be used as a feasible method to evaluate the treatment response of nCRT for locally advanced rectal cancer.

The prevention of pollution requires real-time monitoring of cadmium (Cd2+) concentration in the food, as it has a dramatic impact on poultry and can pose a threat to human health. Here, we fabricate a portable workstation integrating a microfluidic chip that facilitates real-time monitoring of Cd2+ levels in real samples by utilizing the Luminol-KMnO4 chemiluminescence (CL) system. Interestingly, Cd2+ can significantly enhance the CL signal, resulting in sensitive detection of Cd2+ in the range of 0-0.18 mg/L with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.207 µg/L. Furthermore, a remote-controlled unit is integrated into the portable workstation to form a remote-controlled portable workstation (RCPW) performing automated point-of-care testing (POCT) of Cd2+. The as-prepared strategy allows remote control of RCPW to avoid long-distance transportation of samples to achieve real-time target monitoring. Consequently, this system furnishes RCPW for monitoring Cd2+ levels in real samples, thereby holding potential for applications in preventing food pollution.

Foodborne pathogens have a substantial bearing on food safety and environmental health. The development of automated, portable and compact devices is essential for the on-site and rapid point-of-care testing (POCT) of bacteria. Here, this work developed a micro-automated microfluidic device for detecting bacteria, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7, using a seashell-like microfluidic chip (SMC) as an analysis and mixing platform. The automated device integrates a colorimetric/fluorescent system for the metabolism of copper (Cu2+) by E. coli affecting o-phenylenediamine (OPD) for concentration analysis. A smartphone was used to read the RGB data of the chip reaction reservoir to detect colorimetric and fluorescence patterns in the concentration range of 102-106 CFU mL-1. The automated device overcomes the low efficiency and tedious steps of traditional detection and enables high-precision automated detection that can be applied to POCT in the field, providing an ideal solution for broadening the application of E. coli detection.

With the development of in vitro diagnostics, extracting submicron scale particles from mixed body fluids samples is crucial. In recent years, microfluidic separation has attracted much attention due to its high efficiency, label-free, and inexpensive nature. Among the microfluidic-based separation, the separation based on ultrasonic standing waves has gradually become a powerful tool. A microfluid environment containing a tilted-angle ultrasonic standing surface acoustic wave (taSSAW) field has been widely adapted and designed to separate submicron particles for biochemical applications. This paper investigated submicron particle defection in microfluidics using taSSAWs analytically. Particles with 0.1-1 µm diameters were analyzed under acoustic pressure, flow rate, tilted angle, and SSAW frequency. According to different acoustic radiation forces acting on the particles, the motion of large-diameter particles was more likely to deflect to the direction of the nodal lines. Decreasing the input flow rate or increasing acoustic pressure and acoustic wave frequency can improve particle deflection. The tilted angle can be optimized by analyzing the simulation results. Based on the simulation analysis, we experimentally showed the separation of polystyrene microspheres (100 nm) from the mixed particles and exosomes (30-150 nm) from human plasma. This research results can provide a certain reference for the practical design of bioparticle separation utilizing acoustofluidic devices.

Bilestones are solid masses found in the gallbladder or biliary tract, which block the normal bile flow and eventually result in severe life-threatening complications. Studies have shown that bilestone formation may be related to bile flow dynamics and the concentration level of bile components. The bile flow dynamics in the biliary tract play a critical role in disclosing the mechanism of bile stasis and transportation. The concentration of bile composition is closely associated with processes such as nucleation and crystallization. Recently, microfluidic-based biosensors have been favored for multiple advantages over traditional benchtop detection assays for their less sample consumption, portability, low cost, and high sensitivity for real-time detection. Here, we reviewed the developments in bile dynamics study and microfluidics-based bile component detection methods. These studies may provide valuable insights into the bilestone formation mechanisms and better treatment, alongside our opinions on the future development of in vitro lithotriptic drug screening of bilestones and bile characterization tests.

Organic electrode materials have garnered a great deal of interest owing to their sustainability, cost-efficiency, and design flexibility metrics. Despite numerous endeavors to fine-tune their redox potential, the pool of organic positive electrode materials with a redox potential above 3 V versus Li+/Li0, and maintaining air stability in the Li-reservoir configuration remains limited. This study expands the chemical landscape of organic Li-ion positive electrode chemistries towards the 4 V-class through molecular design based on electron density depletion within the redox center via the mesomeric effect of electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs). This results in the development of novel families of conjugated triflimides and cyanamides as high-voltage electrode materials for organic lithium-ion batteries. These are found to exhibit ambient air stability and demonstrate reversible electrochemistry with redox potentials spanning the range of 3.1 V to 3.8 V (versus Li+/Li0), marking the highest reported values so far within the realm of n-type organic chemistries. Through comprehensive structural analysis and extensive electrochemical studies, we elucidate the relationship between the molecular structure and the ability to fine-tune the redox potential. These findings offer promising opportunities to customize the redox properties of organic electrodes, bridging the gap with their inorganic counterparts for application in sustainable and eco-friendly electrochemical energy storage devices.

Rechargeable lithium batteries using 5 V positive electrode materials can deliver considerably higher energy density as compared to state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. However, their development remains plagued by the lack of electrolytes with concurrent anodic stability and Li metal compatibility. Here we report a new electrolyte based on dimethyl 2,5-dioxahexanedioate solvent for 5 V-class batteries. Benefiting from the particular chemical structure, weak interaction with lithium cation and resultant peculiar solvation structure, the resulting electrolyte not only enables stable, dendrite-free lithium plating-stripping, but also displays anodic stability up to 5.2 V (vs. Li/Li+), in additive or co-solvent-free formulation, and at low salt concentration of 1 M. Consequently, the Li | |LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cells using the 1 M LiPF6 in 2,5-dioxahexanedioate based electrolyte retain >97% of the initial capacity after 250 cycles, outperforming the conventional carbonate-based electrolyte formulations, making this, and potentially other dicarbonate solvents promising for future Lithium-based battery practical explorations.

The mechanics of bile flow in the biliary system plays an important role in studying bile stasis and gallstone formation. Bile duct stricture is an abnormal phenomenon that refers to the bile duct getting smaller or narrower. The main objective of this study is to study the influence of stricture on bile flow dynamics using numerical methods. We employed a numerical Computational Fluid Dynamics model of the bile flow within a strictured hepatic duct. We studied and compared the influence of stricture severity, stricture length, eccentricity, and bile flow property on the bile flow dynamics. The bile flow velocity, pressure distribution, pressure drop, and wall shear stress are provided in detail. The stricture alters the normal bile flow pattern and increases flow resistance. At the location upstream and downstream of the stricture, bile flow slows down. In the area of the stricture throat, bile flow is accelerated, and recirculation forms behind the stricture. The maximum pressure drop of the biliary system increases with the stricture length. The eccentricity makes the flow deflect away from the duct's centerline. The behavior of the deflected flow is significantly altered downstream of the stricture. Such bile flow behavior as deceleration and recirculation may lead to cholestasis. Stricture alters bile flow in the biliary tract, causing changes in biliary hydrodynamic indexes, which could potentially serve as an omen for gallstone formation and other related diseases. The consideration of the bile duct stricture could lead to better patient stratification.

Two-dimensional electrically conducting metal-organic frameworks (2D-e-MOFs) have emerged as a class of highly promising functional materials for a wide range of applications. However, despite the significant recent advances in 2D-e-MOFs, developing systems that can be postsynthetically chemically functionalized, while also allowing fine-tuning of the transport properties, remains challenging. Herein, we report two isostructural 2D-e-MOFs: Ni3(HITAT)2 and Ni3(HITBim)2 based on two new 3-fold symmetric ligands: 2,3,7,8,12,13-hexaaminotriazatruxene (HATAT) and 2,3,8,9,14,15-hexaaminotribenzimidazole (HATBim), respectively, with reactive sites for postfunctionalization. Ni3(HITAT)2 and Ni3(HITBim)2 exhibit temperature-activated charge transport, with bulk conductivity values of 44 and 0.5 mS cm-1, respectively. Density functional theory analysis attributes the difference to disparities in the electron density distribution within the parent ligands: nitrogen-rich HATBim exhibits localized electron density and a notably lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy relative to HATAT. Precise amounts of methanesulfonyl groups are covalently bonded to the N-H indole moiety within the Ni3(HITAT)2 framework, modulating the electrical conductivity by a factor of ∼20. These results provide a blueprint for the design of porous functional materials with tunable chemical functionality and electrical response.

BACKGROUND: The biological and molecular characteristics of spread through air spaces (STAS), a newly recognized invasive mode of lung cancer, remain controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological features and molecular characteristics of STAS in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma. METHODS: A total of 694 resected invasive non-mucinous lung adenocarcinomas diagnosed by clinicopathology from July 2019 to March 2021 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University were collected, and the relationship between STAS and clinicopathological factors was analyzed. The state of protein expression of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) was detected by immunohistochemical method. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was detected by amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR). ROS proto-oncogene 1-receptor (ROS1) was detected by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). RESULTS: A total of 344 STAS positive cases and 350 STAS negative cases were collected. By univariate analysis, STAS positivity was statistically associated with tumor maximum diameter (P<0.001), pleural invasion (P<0.001), lymphovascular invasion (P<0.001), nerve invasion (P=0.013), lymph node metastasis (P<0.001), clinical stage (P<0.001) and histological type (P<0.001). There was a statistical correlation between STAS and ALK protein expression (P=0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that STAS positive was correlated with pleural invasion (P=0.001), vascular invasion (P<0.001), lymph node metastasis (P=0.005)and ALK protein expression (P=0.032). CONCLUSIONS: STAS is associated with highly aggressive biological behavior of lung adenocarcinoma, suggesting a poor prognosis.

Plasticizers are a type of toxic substance that may remain in food, posing significant health risks including carcinogenic, teratogenic, mutagenic, and other adverse effects. In this study, a novel strategy was employed by combining Pt@Au nanozymes with high catalytic properties to created two catalytic signal probes, designated as Pt@Au@Ab1 and Pt@Au@Ab2, specifically designed for the detection of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These catalytic signal probes served as the foundation for the development of a colorimetric immunoassay, enabling the simultaneous detection of both DMP and DBP. The colorimetric immunoassay is capable of detecting DMP in the range of 0.5-100 µg/L with a limit of detection as low as 0.1 µg/L and DBP in the range of 1-32 µg/L with a low limit of detection of 0.5 µg/L. The developed immunoassay can be used for the determination of the DMP and DBP in baijiu and plastic bottled drinks. The recovery rate is in the range of 96.4% and 100.5% and the coefficient of variation is between 1.0% and 7.2%. This innovative colorimetric immunoassay offers a robust tool for the simultaneous quantification of DMP and DBP in real samples.

Abusive use of ß-agonists as feed additives for animals and medication is detrimental to human health and food safety. Conventional assays are restricted to a single type of ß-agonists detection and cannot match the multiplexing features to perform automated, high throughput, and rapid quantitative analysis in real samples. In this research, we develop a portable automated chip system (PACS) with highly integrated automated devices in conjunction with portable microfluidic chips to provide simultaneous point-of-care testing of multiple ß-agonists in the field, simplifying complex manual methods, shortening assay times, and improving sensitivity. Specifically, silicon film is used as reaction substrates for immobilizing the conjugates of ß-agonists to increase the sensitivity of the assay result. Then, the PACS with a chemiluminescence imaging detector is established for automatic high-throughput and sensitive detection of Clenbuterol, Ractopamine, and Salbutamol based on the indirect immunoassay. Newly developed chip with high mixing performance can improve the sensitivity of target determination. Multiplex assays were carried out using the developed system for Clenbuterol, Ractopamine, and Salbutamol with a limit of detection of 54 pg mL-1,59 pg mL-1, and 93 pg mL-1, respectively. Except for sample preparation and coating, the detection in the PACS takes less than 47 min. A satisfactory sample recovery (86.33%-108.12%) was obtained, validating the reliability and practical applicability of this PACS. Meanwhile, the PACS enables sensitive and rapid detection of multiple ß-agonists in farms or markets where lacking advanced laboratory facilities.
