RESUMO

In this study, a high vacuum flavor extraction (HVE) device was developed to address the limitations of traditional extraction methods, such as extended extraction times and artifact generation during high-temperature processes. Firstly, the repeatability and precision of the HVE method were evaluated through quantitative analysis of twelve volatile odor compounds across seven replicate extractions using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The results showed that the HVE system achieved a mean relative standard deviation (RSD) of 11.60 ± 1.79% and a recovery rate of 90.55 ± 4.56%, demonstrating its precision and reproducibility. Secondly, the performance of HVE was compared with solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) for extracting flavor compounds from fried tilapia mince. The results indicated that HVE was more effective, particularly in extracting aldehydes and pyrazines, which are key contributors to the flavor profile. Finally, sensory evaluations supported these findings, showing that the odor profiles obtained through HVE were most similar to the original sample, with a similarity score of 72.55%, compared to 69.25% for SAFE and 60.29% for SDE. These findings suggest that HVE is a suitable method for the extraction and analysis of volatile compounds in complex food matrices such as fried tilapia mince.

RESUMO

Purpose: To compare the long-term efficacy of the parallel stent graft (PSG), fenestrated stent graft (FSG), and branched stent graft (BSG) techniques to treat thoracoabdominal aortic pathologies. Materials and methods: In total, 291 patients with thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) and dissection (TAD) involving visceral arteries who underwent PSG (n = 85; 15 TAA and 70 TAD), FSG (n = 107; 47 TAD and 60 TAA), or BSG (n = 99; 37 TAD and 62 TAA) were included from multiple centers from January 2015 to December 2022, and a total of 1,108 visceral aortic branches were reconstructed. Results: The average reconstruction time of each visceral aortic branch for FSG, BSG, and PSG is 27.5 ± 12.1, 23.2 ± 11.9, and 18.8 ± 11.8 min, respectively (P < 0.01). The free-from-endoleak rate at the last follow-up for FSG, BSG, and PSG was 86.9%, 91.9%, and 60.0%, respectively. The last follow-up patency rate for FSG, BSG, and PSG was 85.0%, 91.9%, and 94.1%, respectively. The average reconstruction price of each visceral aortic branch for FSG, BSG, and PSG was 41.40 ± 3.22 thousand RMB, 41.84 ± 3.86 thousand RMB, and 42.35 ± 4.52 thousand RMB, respectively (P = 0.24). Conclusion: To treat the aortic pathologies involving the visceral segment, BSG had a lower endoleak rate and higher branch patency rate when compared with the FSG and PSG techniques. The expense of BSG was comparable to the other two techniques.

RESUMO

This study aims to understand the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitalized patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in China, who did not contract SARS-CoV-2. We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional analysis comparing the characteristics and outcomes of hospitalized PAD patients across two distinct periods: Pre-pandemic (P1, from January 2018 to December 2019) and during the pandemic (P2, from January 2020 to December 2021). During P1, 762 hospitalized patients were treated, with an average age of 72.3 years, while 478 patients were treated in P2, with an average age of 65.1 years. Notably, hospitalized patients admitted during the pandemic (P2) exhibited a significantly higher incidence of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI, 70% vs 54%), diabetic foot infection (47% vs 29%), and infra-popliteal lesions (28% vs 22%). Furthermore, these patients demonstrated a marked deterioration in their Rutherford category and an increased mean score in the Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection classification system (WIfI). Treatment during the pandemic emerged as a predictor of reduced procedural success and increased major adverse limb events. Factors such as the presence of diabetic foot infection, renal impairment, and deteriorating WIfI scores were identified as independent risk indicators for major adverse limb events. Our results demonstrate that intensive care was provided to severe cases of PAD even during the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the unprecedented pressures on healthcare systems, patients with severe PAD, particularly those with CLTI, continued to receive necessary in-patient care. The findings underscore the importance of timely medical interventions and extended follow-up for patients exhibiting high-risk factors.

RESUMO

Purpose: Iliac vein stenting is the primary treatment for patients with iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS). However, post-stent placement, patients often experience in-stent restenosis and thrombosis. Despite this, the role of lower limb movements in the functioning of stents and veins in IVCS patients remains unclear. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by developing a computational model using medical imaging techniques to simulate IVCS after stent placement. Methods: This research used a patient-specific model to analyze the effects of lower extremity exercises on hemodynamics post-stent placement. We conducted a comprehensive analysis to evaluate the impact of specific lower limb movements, including hip flexion, ankle movement and pneumatic compression on the hemo-dynamic characteristics within the treated vein. The analysis assessed parameters such as wall shear stress (WSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), and residence time (RRT). Results: The results demonstrated that hip flexion significantly disrupts blood flow dynamics at the iliac vein bifurcation after stenting. Bilateral and left hip flexion were associated with pronounced regions of low WSS and high OSI at the iliac-vena junction and the stent segment. Additionally, active ankle exercise (AAE) and intermittent pump compression (IPC) therapy were found to enhance the occurrence of low WSS regions along the venous wall, potentially reducing the risk of thrombosis post-stent placement. Consequently, both active joint movements (hip and ankle) and passive movements have the potential to influence the local blood flow environment within the iliac vein after stenting. Conclusions: The exploration of the impact of lower limb movements on hemodynamics provides valuable insights for mitigating adverse effects associated with lower limb movements post iliac-stenting. Bilateral and left hip flexions negatively impacted blood flow, increasing thrombosis risk. However, active ankle exercise and intermittent pump compression therapies effectively improve the patency.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Residual stenosis (RS) and hemodynamics demonstrate a significant correlation with postoperative in-stent restenosis/thrombosis following carotid artery stenting (CAS). PURPOSE: This study endeavors to elucidate the potential associations between RS and adverse postoperative hemodynamic factors. METHODS: This study utilized 46 patient-specific carotid artery models post-stenting, which were categorized into two groups based on the presence of RS: the normal group (N, n = 23) and the RS group (RS, n = 23). A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the discrepancies in geometry and adverse hemodynamic parameters, alongside investigating the potential correlation between hemodynamic and geometric parameters. RESULTS: The results reveal that a higher reflux flow volume is discernible in the RS group during low-velocity phases of the cardiac cycle, concomitant with an augmented extent of areas exposed to oscillatory shear stress and extended particle residence time. Moreover, the adverse hemodynamic parameters exhibit a positive correlation with the degree of stent expansion, stent length in the common carotid artery (CCA), and the distal slope of the RS. CONCLUSION: The distal slope and tortuosity of RS significantly influence the development of adverse hemodynamic conditions post-stenting, exacerbating the hemodynamic environment near the stenosis. Interestingly, while an extended stent length in the internal carotid artery (ICA) region improves hemodynamics by reducing flow disturbance, a longer stent in the CCA significantly worsens these conditions. Hence, it is prudent to analyze the characteristics of the local lesion regions to optimize the strategy for stent implantation.

RESUMO

Pomacea canaliculata is one of the most successful invader in worldwide, adversely affecting native ecosystem through direct predation or indirect competition, while the mechanism of indirect effects on native species remain poorly understood. To clarify the effects of P. canaliculata on the native near-niche species, Bellamya purificata, a widespread freshwater gastropod in China, was selected as the research subject. The changes of mortality, histology, antioxidant system as well as the intestinal flora diversity of B. purificata were explored in present study. The results showed that the median lethal dose of P. canaliculata culture solution for B. purificata was 23.76 ind/L and a concentration-dependent damage of both the gonad and hepatopancreas were observed, the gonadal villi were dissolved and the hepatopancreas cells were broken at 20 ind/L. Furthermore, different concentrations of P. canaliculata culture solution leading to the antioxidant damage on the enzyme or non-enzyme systems of B. purificata at various degrees. Additionally, a decrease in the diversity of the intestinal flora was observed, accompanied by an increase in the abundance of pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Aeromonas after the exposure of the culture solution of P. canaliculata. Last, after being recovered in freshwater for 24 h, the antioxidant damage of B. purificata and the disturbance of intestinal flora diversity were still not recovered especially in the high concentration group. The indirect competitive mechanism of P. canaliculata culture solution on B. purificata were explored from the aspects of tissue, biochemical level and intestinal flora, which enriched the research of P. canaliculata invasion on native snails in China, and provided new insights for the study of the invasion strategy of P. canaliculata.

RESUMO

Zimmermann-Laband Syndrome (ZLS; MIM 135500) is a rare genetic disorder with the main clinical manifestations of gingival fibromatosis and finger/toe nail hypoplasia. KCNH1 (potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily H, member-1), KCNN3 (potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily H, member-3) and ATP6V1B2 (ATPase H+ transporting V1 subunit B2) genes are considered causative genes for ZLS. However, there are limited reports about the diverse clinical presentation and genetic heterogeneity. Reporting more information on phenotype-genotype correlation and the treatment of ZLS is necessary. This case reported a 2-year-old patient with gingival enlargement that failure of eruption of the deciduous teeth and severe hypoplasia of nails. Based on a systemic examination and a review of the relevant literature, we made an initial clinical diagnosis of ZLS. A novel pathogenic variant in the KCNH1 gene was identified using whole-exome sequencing to substantiate our preliminary diagnosis. The histopathological results were consistent with gingival fibromatosis. Gingivectomy and gingivoplasty were performed under general anesthesia. After surgery, the gingival appearance improved significantly, and the masticatory function of the teeth was restored. After 2-year follow-up, the gingival showed slightly hyperplasia. Systemic examination and gene sequencing firstly contribute to provide information for an early diagnosis for ZLS, then timely removal of the hyperplastic gingival facilitates the establishment of a normal occlusal relationship and improves oral aesthetics.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to explore the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in the development of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), as well as to discover the potential regulatory mechanism of PPARγ. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were treated with modified glycated human serum albumin (M-HSA) to mimic DVT. PPARγ expression and activity were detected using western blot analysis and the corresponding activity detection kit, respectively. Cell Counting Kit-8 and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assays were employed to detect cell viability and apoptosis, respectively. The levels of thrombosis-related factors and inflammatory cytokines were detected by ELISA. The levels of oxidative stress-related factors were determined by the corresponding commercial kits. In addition, tunicamycin (TM), the agonist of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), was applied to investigate the potential mechanism. The results indicated that M-HSA caused reduced expression and activity of PPARγ in HUVECs; these effects were reversed by PPARγ overexpression, which significantly inhibited M-HSA-induced cell viability loss, cell apoptosis, inflammation and oxidative stress in HUVECs. In addition, ERS was activated following M-HSA stimulation in HUVECs, but was suppressed by PPARγ overexpression. Furthermore, TM partly abolished the protective role of PPARγ overexpression against cell viability loss, cell apoptosis, inflammation and oxidative stress in M-HSA-induced HUVECs. In summary, PPARγ antagonized M-HSA-induced HUVEC injury by suppressing the activation of ERS, which provides a novel strategy for the treatment of DVT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In recent years, compression therapy has attracted gradually increasing clinical attention in lower extremity venous diseases. However, basic concepts and clear nomenclature, standard treatment methods, and consistent product standards for pressure equipment are lacking. Therefore, developing clinical guidelines for compression therapy is essential to improving the treatment of venous diseases. METHODS: Our panel generated strong (grade I), moderate (grade IIa and IIb), and weak (grade III) recommendations based on high-quality (class A), moderate-quality (class B), and low-quality (class C) evidence, using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) grading system. RESULTS: The panels made 30 recommendations from current evidence, focusing on 7 fields of lower extremity venous disease (venous thromboembolism, post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), varicose veins, hemangioma and vascular malformations, lymphedema, and venous ulcers) and 18 topics. CONCLUSIONS: Of the 30 recommendations made across the 18 topics, 7 were strong (grade I) and 17 were based on high-quality (class A) evidence, highlighting the need for further research of the use of compression therapy.

RESUMO

Clonorchis sinensis is a significant zoonotic food-borne parasite that causes a range of hepatobiliary diseases, which in severe cases can even lead to cholangiocarcinoma. To explore new diagnostic and treatment strategies, the dynamic RNA regulatory processes across different developmental stages of C. sinensis were analyzed by using whole-transcriptome sequencing. The chromosomal-level genome of C. sinensis was used for sequence alignment and annotation. In this study, we identified a total of 59,103 RNAs in the whole genome, including 2,384 miRNAs, 25,459 mRNAs, 27,564 lncRNAs and 3,696 circRNAs. Differential expression analysis identified 6,556 differentially expressed mRNAs, 2,231 lncRNAs, 877 miRNAs and 20 circRNAs at different developmental stages. Functional enrichment analysis highlighted the critical role of microtubule-related biological processes in the growth and development of C. sinensis. And coexpression analysis revealed 97 lncRNAs and 85 circRNAs that were coexpressed with 42 differentially expressed mRNAs that associated with microtubules at different developmental stages of C. sinensis. The expression of the microtubule-related genes dynein light chain 2 (DLC2) and dynein light chain 4 (DLC4) increased with C. sinensis development, and DLC2/4 could be inhibited by albendazole. Finally, by constructing competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA and circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory relationships were constructed, and the ceRNA networks of MSTRG.14258.5-novel_miR_2287-newGene_28215 and MSTRG.14258.5-novel_miR_2216-CSKR_109340 were verified. This study suggests, through whole transcriptome sequencing, that the context of microtubule regulation may play an essential role in the development and growth of C. sinensis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a parasitic helminth that causes a globally prevalent neglected zoonotic disease, and worms at different developmental stages (muscle larvae, adult worms, newborn larvae) induce immune attack at different infection sites, causing serious harm to host health. Several innate immune cells release extracellular traps (ETs) to entrap and kill most pathogens that invade the body. In response, some unicellular pathogens have evolved a strategy to escape capture by ETs through the secretion of nucleases, but few related studies have investigated multicellular helminths. RESULTS: In the present study, we observed that ETs from neutrophils capture adult worms of T. spiralis, while ETs from macrophages trap muscle larvae and newborn larvae, and ETs had a killing effect on parasites in vitro. To defend against this immune attack, T. spiralis secretes plancitoxin-1, a DNase II-like protein, to degrade ETs and escape capture, which is essential for the survival of T. spiralis in the host. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, these findings demonstrate that T. spiralis escapes ET-mediated capture by secreting deoxyribonuclease as a potential conserved immune evasion mechanism, and plancitoxin-1 could be used as a potential vaccine candidate.

RESUMO

Antibiotics are essential for combating pathogens; however, their misuse has led to increased resistance, necessitating the search for effective, low-toxicity alternatives. Surfactin, a cyclic lipopeptide with a C12-C17 ß-hydroxy fatty acid chain, exhibits significant antibacterial activity and resists resistance, making it a research focus. Nonetheless, the effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) on surfactin's structure and activity are not well understood. This study examines the influence of BCAAs (L-valine, L-leucine, and L-isoleucine) on the lipopeptide (surfactin) produced by Bacillus velezensis YA215. Process optimization shows that adding 1 g/L of L-Leu and L-Ile, and 0.5 g/L of L-Val, maximized surfactin production to 18.59%, 19.23%, and 20.64%, respectively. Surfactin content peaked at 36 h with L-Val and L-Ile, yielding 19.72% and 11.37%. In contrast, L-Leu addition peaked at 24 h, yielding 11.33%. Notably, L-Val supplementation resulted in the highest relative surfactin content. Antimicrobial testing demonstrated that BCAAs significantly enhance the antibacterial effects of lipopeptides against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with Val showing the most pronounced effect. The addition of BCAAs notably altered the composition of surfactin fatty acid chains. Specifically, Val increased the proportions of iso C14 and iso C16 ß-hydroxy fatty acids from 13.3% and 4.216-23.803% and 8.31%, respectively. Additionally, the amino acid composition at the 7th position of the peptide chain changed significantly, especially with Val addition, which increased the proportion of C14 [Val 7] surfactin by 3.29 times. These structural changes are likely associated with the enhanced antibacterial activity of surfactin. These findings provide valuable insights into the roles of BCAAs in microbial fermentation, underscoring their importance in metabolic engineering to enhance the production of bioactive compounds.

RESUMO

Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (C. gloeosporioides) were isolated from the decaying strawberry tissue. The antifungal properties of Monarda didyma essential oil (MEO) and its nanoemulsion were confirmed, demonstrating complete inhibition of the pathogens at concentrations of 0.45 µL/mL (0.37 mg/mL) and 10 µL/mL, respectively. Thymol, a primary component of MEO, was determined as an antimicrobial agent with IC50 values of 34.51 (B. cinerea) and 53.40 (C. gloeosporioides) µg/mL. Hippophae rhamnoides oil (HEO) was confirmed as a potent antioxidant, leading to the development of a thymol-HEO-chitosan film designed to act as an antistaling agent. The disease index and weight loss rate can be reduced by 90 and 60%, respectively, with nutrients also being well-preserved, offering an innovative approach to preservative development. Studies on the antifungal mechanism revealed that thymol could bind to FKS1 to disrupt the cell wall, causing the collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential and a burst of reactive oxygen species.

RESUMO

Mycotoxins are representative contaminants causing food losses and food safety problems worldwide. Thymol can effectively inhibit pathogen infestation and aflatoxin accumulation during grain storage, but high volatility limits its application. Here, a thymol-betaine co-crystal system was synthesized through grinding-induced self-assembly. The THY-TMG co-crystal exhibited excellent thermal stability with melting point of 91.2 °C owing to abundant intermolecular interactions. Remarkably, after 15 days at 30 °C, the release rate of thymol from co-crystal was only 55%, far surpassing that of pure thymol. Notably, the co-crystal demonstrated the ability to bind H2O in the environment while controlling the release of thymol, essentially acting as a desiccant. Moreover, the co-crystals effectively inhibited the growth of Aspergillus flavus and the biosynthesis of aflatoxin B1. In practical terms, the THY-TMG co-crystal was successful in preventing AFB1 contamination and nutrients loss in peanuts, thereby prolonging their shelf-life under conditions of 28 °C and 70% RH.

RESUMO

Hemodynamics can be explored through various biomedical imaging techniques. However, observing transient spatiotemporal variations in the saturation of oxygen (sO2) within human blood vessels proves challenging with conventional methods. In this study, we employed photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) to reconstruct the evolving spatiotemporal patterns in a human vein. Through analysis of the multi-wavelength photoacoustic (PA) spectrum, we illustrated the dynamic distribution within blood vessels. Additionally, we computationally rendered the dynamic process of venous blood flowing into the major vein and entering a branching vessel. Notably, we successfully recovered, in real time, the parabolic wavefront profile of laminar flow inside a deep vein in vivo-a first-time achievement. While the study is preliminary, the demonstrated capability of dynamic sO2 imaging holds promise for new applications in biology and medicine.

RESUMO

Pomacea canaliculata is one of the most notorious invasive aquatic snail, capable of influencing various aquatic organisms through their secretions. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Propsilocerus akamusi are the most prevalent and powerful bioturbators in aquatic ecosystems. However, the mechanism of P. canaliculata's secretions affecting bioturbators remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of P. canaliculata's secretion on L. hoffmeisteri and P. akamusi. L. hoffmeisteri and P. akamusi were treated for 24 h with P. canaliculata and the native species Bellamya aeruginosa secretions at different densities (1 or 20). The migration numbers and aggregation rate of L. hoffmeisteri indicated that P. canaliculata secretion caused L. hoffmeisteri to become alert and migrate away from the nucleus community, resulting in poor population identification, especially at high concentrations. Moreover, the antioxidant enzymatic activity, lipid peroxidation, intestinal microbial diversity, and composition of the two bioturbators were analyzed. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration were elevated following P. canaliculata secretion treatment, indicating oxidative damage. Furthermore, the composition and diversity of intestinal microbiota of L. hoffmeisteri and P. akamusi were changed. The abundance of functional microbiota decreased, and pathogenic bacteria such as Aeromonas became dominant in the intestines of both bioturbators. The current research evaluates the effects of P. canaliculata secretion on the behavior, oxidative stress, and intestinal microbial composition and diversity of two bioturbators, providing new insights into the assessment of post-invaded ecosystems.

RESUMO

High concentrations of organic aerosol (OA) occur in Asian countries, leading to great health burdens. Clean air actions have resulted in significant emission reductions of air pollutants in China. However, long-term nation-wide trends in OA and their causes remain unknown. Here, we present both observational and model evidence demonstrating widespread decreases with a greater reduction in primary OA than in secondary OA (SOA) in China during the period of 2013 to 2020. Most of the decline is attributed to reduced residential fuel burning while the interannual variability in SOA may have been driven by meteorological variations. We find contrasting effects of reducing NOx and SO2 on SOA production which may have led to slight overall increases in SOA. Our findings highlight the importance of clean energy replacements in multiple sectors on achieving air-quality targets because of high OA precursor emissions and fluctuating chemical and meteorological conditions.

RESUMO

Sepsis is a disorder of immune regulation caused by pathogenic microorganisms. A large number of inflammatory factors and inflammatory mediators are released, resulting in systemic inflammatory response disorder and acute lung injury (ALI). Helminths infection activate Th2 cytokines and immunomodulatory pathways, which have the function of anti-infection effector molecules. The early infection of Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) was mainly intestinal phase. In this study, we explored the effect of intestinal phase infection of T. spiralis on LPS-induced ALI. Compared with control mice, the serum and lung tissues of T. spiralis infected mice had a significant decrease of Th1 inflammatory cytokines, a significant increase of Th2 anti-inflammatory cytokines, and a significant decrease of inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissue. These results suggest that T. spiralis during the intestinal phase can act on distal organs (lung) and reduce LPS-induced lung inflammation, providing evidence for a potential new pathway for immune-mediated disease in helminths and a possible role for intestinal worms in the gut-lung axis.

RESUMO

Hyperactivation of pro-inflammatory type 1 cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α] and interferon gamma [IFN-γ]) mirrors the inflammation of coronavirus disease 2019. Helminths could alleviate excessive immune responses. Here, helminth Trichinella spiralis (Ts) infection was shown to protect against TNF-α- and IFN-γ-induced shock. Mechanistically, Ts-induced protection was interleukin-9 (IL-9) dependent but not IL-4Rα. Recombinant IL-9 treatment not only improved the survival of wild-type mice with TNF-α- and IFN-γ-induced shock but also that of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected K18-human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) mice, emphasizing the significance of IL-9 in alleviating cytokine storm syndromes during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Interestingly, Ts excretory/secretory (TsES)-induced protection was also observed in SARS-CoV-2 infection, indicating that identifying anti-inflammatory molecules from TsES could be a novel way to mitigate adverse pathological inflammation during pathogen infection.IMPORTANCESevere coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is linked to cytokine storm triggered by type 1 pro-inflammatory immune responses. TNF-α and IFN-γ shock mirrors cytokine storm syndromes, including COVID-19. Helminths (e.g., Trichinella spiralis, Ts) can potently activate anti-inflammatory type 2 immune response. Here, we found that helminth Ts-induced protection against TNF-α and IFN-γ shock was IL-9 dependent. Treatment with recombinant IL-9 could protect against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in K18-hACE2 mice. Helminth Ts excretory/secretory (TsES) products also ameliorated SARS-CoV-2 infection-related cytokine storm. In conclusion, our study emphasizes the significance of IL-9 in protecting from cytokine storm syndromes associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Anti-inflammatory molecules from TsES could be a new source to mitigate adverse pathological inflammation associated with infections, including COVID-19.
