RESUMO

On-chip manipulation of photon emission from quantum emitters (QEs) is crucial for quantum nanophotonics and advanced optical applications. At the same time, the general design strategy is still elusive, especially for fully exploring the degrees of freedom of multiple channels. Here, the vectorial scattering holography (VSH) approach developed recently for flexibly designing QE-coupled metasurfaces is extended to tempering the strength of QE emission into a particular channel. The VSH power is demonstrated by designing, fabricating, and optically characterizing on-chip QE sources emitted into six differently oriented propagation channels, each representing the entangled state of orthogonal circular polarizations with different topological charges and characterized with a specific relative strength. We postulate that the demonstration of tempered multichannel photon emission from QE-coupled metasurfaces significantly broadens the possibilities provided by the holographic metasurface platform, especially those relevant for high-dimensional quantum information processing.

RESUMO

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a severe microvascular complication of diabetes, one key feature of which includes renal fibrosis. As apelin is an adipokine closely related to diabetes, the present study aimed to evaluate apelin-13 expression levels and the relationship between apelin-13 and disease indicators in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). The present case-control study enrolled 70 patients with diabetes, including 31 with diabetic kidney disease (DKD group), 39 without DKD (non-DKD group) and 30 healthy controls. The levels of serum apelin-13 and TGF-ß1, the key driver of renal fibrosis, were determined by ELISA. Additionally, age, mean disease duration, weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, cholesterol, urea nitrogen, blood creatinine and 24-hour urinary total protein (24-h UTP) were recorded. The results demonstrated that apelin-13 and TGF-ß1 expression levels, age, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and blood urea nitrogen levels were significantly higher in patients with diabetes compared with the healthy controls (P<0.05). Moreover, apelin-13 and TGF-ß1 expression levels, mean disease duration, systolic pressure, blood creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and 24-h UTP were significantly higher in the DKD group compared with the non-DKD group (P<0.05). The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was significantly reduced in the DKD group compared with the non-DKD group (P<0.05). Correlation analysis demonstrated a negative correlation between apelin-13 and eGFR expression and a positive correlation between apelin-13 expression and 24-h UTP in both the DKD and non-DKD groups (P<0.05). A negative correlation was also demonstrated between apelin-13 and TGF-ß1 expression levels in the DKD group and non-DKD groups (both P<0.05). In conclusion, apelin-13 and TGF-ß1 expression levels were significantly higher in the DKD group compared with those in the non-DKD group. Additionally, apelin-13 expression was negatively correlated with TGF-ß1 expression in the DKD and non-DKD groups. Therefore, apelin-13 could potentially be used in the future as an indicator of renal fibrosis or destruction in patients with DKD. The present trial was retrospectively registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (trial registration no. ChiCTR2200060945) on 14.06.2022.

RESUMO

Ultracompact chip-integrated single-photon sources of collimated beams with polarization-encoded states are crucial for integrated quantum technologies. However, most of currently available single-photon sources rely on external bulky optical components to shape the polarization and phase front of emitted photon beams. Efficient integration of quantum emitters with beam shaping and polarization encoding functionalities remains so far elusive. Here, ultracompact single-photon sources of linearly polarized vortex beams based on chip-integrated quantum emitter-coupled metasurfaces are presented, which are meticulously designed by fully exploiting the potential of nanobrick-arrayed metasurfaces. The authors first demonstrate on-chip single-photon generation of high-purity linearly polarized vortex beams with prescribed topological charges of 0, - 1, and +1. The multiplexing of single-photon emission channels with orthogonal linear polarizations carrying different topological charges are further realized and their entanglement is demonstarated. The work illustrates the potential and feasibility of ultracompact quantum emitter-coupled metasurfaces as a new quantum optics platform for realizing chip-integrated high-dimensional single-photon sources.

RESUMO

Multichannel quantum emission is in high demand for advanced quantum photonic applications such as quantum communications, quantum computing, and quantum cryptography. However, to date, the most common way for shaping photon emission from quantum emitters (QEs) is to utilize free-standing (external) bulky optical components. Here, we develop the multichannel holography approach for flexibly designing on-chip QE-coupled metasurfaces that make use of nonradiatively QE-excited surface plasmon polaritons for generating far-field quantum emission, which propagates in designed directions carrying specific spin and orbital angular momenta (SAM and OAM, respectively). We further design, fabricate, and characterize on-chip quantum light sources of multichannel quantum emission encoded with different SAMs and OAMs. The holography-based inverse design approach developed and demonstrated on-chip quantum light sources with multiple degrees of freedoms, thereby enabling a powerful platform for quantum nanophotonics, especially relevant for advanced quantum photonic applications, e.g., high-dimensional quantum information processing.

RESUMO

Generation of single photons carrying spin and orbital angular momenta (SAM and OAM) opens enticing perspectives for exploiting multiple degrees of freedom for high-dimensional quantum systems. However, on-chip generation of single photons encoded with single-mode SAM-OAM states has been a major challenge. Here, by using carefully designed anisotropic nanodimers fabricated atop a substrate, supporting surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation, and accurately positioned around a quantum emitter (QE), we enable nonradiative QE-SPP coupling and the SPP outcoupling into free-space propagating radiation featuring the designed SAM and OAM. We demonstrate on-chip room-temperature generation of well-collimated (divergence < 7.5°) circularly polarized (chirality > 0.97) single-mode vortex beams with different topological charges (𝓁 = 0, 1, and 2) and high single-photon purity, g(2)(0) < 0.15. The developed approach can straightforwardly be extended to produce multiple, differently polarized, single-mode single-photon radiation channels and enable thereby realization of high-dimensional quantum sources for advanced quantum photonic technologies.

RESUMO

In the case of low-rate peeling, an adhesive can undergo a large tensile deformation through the viscous flow and form the fingering pattern at the peeling interface, resulting in homogeneous stripes on the peeled surface. In the case of high-rate peeling, no larger viscous deformation occurs, and no surface patterns will be generated. However, it is still unclear how the surface pattern evolves when an adhesive is peeled from a relatively low rate to a high rate. Here, by peeling an adhesive tape at 180° over a wide range of rates, we find that the adhesive tape can undergo a steady peeling. As the peeling rate increases, it is observed that the surface pattern in the peeled adhesive tape tends to evolve from the initial striped pattern to a crescent pattern, then to a spotted pattern. Even in the case of the stick-slip peeling at a small angle, the patterned region also presents the same evolutionary trend. By exploiting a high-speed camera to track the deformation process of the adhesive, it is found that this evolution is actually driven by the cohesive failure of the peeling adhesive. We describe the failure process, revealing the formation mechanism of the crescent pattern. We also discuss the effect of the peeling rate on the interface instability morphology by combining the finite element simulations, elucidating how the surface pattern evolves with the peeling rate.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anaphylactic shock is the severe state of the allergic reaction, which is rapid in onset and fatal. This is the first study that discusses the anaphylactic shock of exenatide reexposure in the patient who has interrupted exenatide treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old man was treated with exenatide owing to high blood glucose and obesity. Then he developed localized urticarial on the face, white lip, hands tremble, nausea, vomit, chest stuffiness, dizziness, accompanying with confusion and dyspnea. His blood glucose was 4.6 millimole per liter (mmol/L) and blood pressure was 85/50 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). DIAGNOSIS: Exenatide-induced anaphylactic shock was considered. INTERVENTIONS: The emergency electrocardiogram was performed. The patient was treated with dexamethasone sodium phosphate and calcium gluconate, combined with exenatide withdrawal. He also received oral antiallergic agents and intravenous nutrition treatment. OUTCOMES: After antishock treatment, the clinical response gradually alleviated. LESSONS: Although exenatide is not prone to anaphylaxis, it is the synthetic peptide that can induce antibody formation. Exenatide has immunogenicity with the potential to elicit an allergic reaction upon administration. Clinicians should always pay more attention to the anaphylactic shock of exenatide, when prescribing for diabetics.

RESUMO

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is an important pathogen found in poultry. RA infection can kill ducks and lead to significant economic losses. Seven RA strains with different susceptibility phenotypes were chosen to study the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) integration of florfenicol (FF) alone and in combination with doxycycline (DOX). The checkerboard assay indicated that synergy [fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) ≤ 0.5] was detected in the CVCC3952 strain of RA and that additivity (FICI >0.5 to ≤ 1) was observed in other strains. Static time-kill curves showed that the bactericidal effect of FF against RA was produced at a FF concentration ≥4 MIC, and the antibacterial activity of FF against RA was enhanced from the aspects of efficacy and efficacy in combination with DOX. Dynamic time-kill curves indicated that FF elicited bactericidal activity against the CVCC3857 strain with a reduction ≥4.88 log10CFU/ml when the dose was ≥8 mg/L. However, a bactericidal effect was not achieved at the maximum administered dose of FF monotherapy (20 mg/L) for isolates with a MIC ≥4 µg/ml. The effect of FF against RA was enhanced upon combination with DOX. The combination of FF with DOX reduced the bacterial burden ≥4.53 log10CFU/ml for all strains with a MIC ≥4 µg/ml. Data were fitted to a sigmoidal Emax model. The PK/PD parameters of AUC24h/MIC (the area under the concentration-time curve over 24 h divided by the MIC) and %T >MIC (the cumulative percentage of time over a 24-h period at which the concentration exceeded the MIC) of FF for eliciting a reduction of 3 log10CFU/ml was 40.10 h and 58.71, respectively. For strains with a MIC ≤ 16 µg/ml, the magnitude of the AUC24h/MIC and Cmax/MIC required for a 3 log10CFU/ml of bacterial killing was 34.84 h and 4.74 in the presence of DOX at 0.5 MIC, respectively. These data suggest that combination of FF with DOX enhanced the activity against RA strains with various susceptibilities to FF and DOX.

RESUMO

With the combination of high flexibility and thermal property, thermally conductive elastomers have played an important role in daily life. However, traditional thermally conductive elastomers display limited stretchability and toughness, seriously restricting their further development in practical applications. Herein, a high-performance composite is fabricated by dispersing room-temperature liquid metal microdroplets (LM) into a polyborosiloxane elastomer (PBSE). Due to the unique solid-liquid coupling mechanism, the LM can deform with the PBSE matrix, achieving higher fracture strain (401%) and fracture toughness (2164 J/m2). Meanwhile, the existence of LM microdroplets improves the thermal conductivity of the composite. Interestingly, the LM/PBSE also exhibits remarkable anti-impact, adhesion capacities under complex loading environments. As a novel stretchable elastomer with enhanced mechanical and thermal behavior, the LM/PBSE shows good application prospects in the fields of thermal camouflages, stretchable heat-dissipation matrixes, and multifunctional shells for electronic devices.

RESUMO

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Rhizoma Coptidis (RC), a widely used traditional Chinese medicine, has been used for the treatment of heat-clearing and detoxifying, but there is very little information on its safety. AIM OF THE STUDY: To provide information on the safety of RC, we evaluated the toxicity of the crude RC and RC alkaloids (berberine, coptisine, palmatine and epiberberine) including cytotoxicity, acute toxicity in mice and sub-chronic toxicity in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cytotoxicity of RC alkaloids was tested in HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells by the MTT assay. The acute toxicity of RC alkaloids was tested in mice and the mortality was calculated at the end of experiment. For sub-chronic toxicity study, the rats were treated with the RC alkaloids at a dose of 156 mg/kg/day and RC at a dose of 521 mg/kg/day for 90 days. Mortality, clinical signs, body weight changes, organ weights, urinalysis and hematological parameters, gross necropsy and histopathology were monitored during the study period. RESULTS: The cell assay indicates that the IC(50) values of berberine, coptisine, palmatine and epiberberine in HepG2 cells were 48.17, 64.81, 112.80 and 120.58 µg/mL, which in 3T3-L1 cells were 41.76, 56.48, 84.32 and 104.18 µg/mL, respectively. In the acute toxicity assay, the LD(50) values of four alkaloids were 713.57, 852.12, 1533.68 and 1360 mg/kg, respectively. However, in the sub-chronic toxicity study, no mortality and morbidity were observed which could be related to RC alkaloids and RC treatment. Besides, there was no abnormality in clinical signs, body weights, organ weights, urinalysis, hematological parameters, gross necropsy and histopathology in any of the animals after the oral administration of RC alkaloids and RC. CONCLUSIONS: Taking these results together, we came to the conclusion that the toxicity of berberine is the maximum and palmatine is the minimal in four RC alkaloids. The currently recommended doses of RC alkaloids and RC consumed are relatively safe.

RESUMO

An effective and rapid method for the separation of scopoletin from Lycium barbarum L. by high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) was established. The ethyl alcohol extract of the Lycium barbarum L. was initially separated using D-101 macroporous resins and further purified by HSCCC. The thin layer chromatography coupling with fluorometric spectrophotometry (TLC-F) method was used to determine the partitioning coefficient of scopoletin in different solvent systems. The results showed the solvent system of chloroformmethanol-water (10:7:3, v/v/v) was the best one for the HSCCC separation. A total of 10.2 mg of scopoletin with high purity (98. 3%, analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)) was obtained in one step by the following separation procedures: the upper phase as the stationary phase, the lower phase as the mobile phase, with a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min, with the apparatus rotated at 850 r/min, and detected at 365 nm. The structure of the obtained compound was identified by 'H-nuclear magnetic resonance and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance. The sample could be injected into HSCCC twice successively and the whole separation was achieved with satisfactory peak resolution. These results suggested that the TLC-F method is useful in measuring the partitioning coefficients of the target compound in HSCCC solvent systems and HSCCC is a fast and convenient method for the separation of scopoletin.

RESUMO

The developing fetus begins to swallow amniotic fluid (AF) early in gestation, a process that results in ingestion of numerous growth factors. Our objectives were 2-fold: 1) to assess the concentration and distribution of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF II) and its binding proteins (BP) 1 and 3 in 2nd trimester amniotic fluid using ELISA, and 2) to establish whether concentrations of AF IGF II and its binding proteins IGF BP1 and 3, measured early in pregnancy, were associated with and predictive of infant birth weight. Birth weights were categorized using recently developed birth-weight-for-gestational-age percentiles for fetal growth in which infants < 10% were classified as SGA (small-for-gestational-age) and those > 90% as LGA (large-for-gestational-age). AF samples were collected after routine genetic testing (15.1 +/- 0.04 wk, range 12-20 wk) from 543 mother-infant pairs in Montreal, QC, Canada. Maternal and fetal characteristics were obtained from questionnaires and medical chart review. Multivariate regression analysis that controlled for maternal height, prepregnancy weight, smoking behavior, infant gender, gestational age, parity, as well as amniocentesis week showed that higher AF IGF BP1 was associated with lower birth weight (partial r2 = 0.0062). Regression analyses revealed that AF IGF BP3 was positively associated with birth weight within LGA and macrosomia subpopulations (partial r2 = 0.0283 and 0.0404, respectively). These results show that 2nd trimester AF IGF BP1, BP3, and IGF II may emerge as early indicators of fetal growth.
