RESUMO

The typical chalcopyrite AgGaQ2 (Q = S, Se) are commercial infrared (IR) second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials; however, they suffer from unexpected laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) primairy due to their narrow band gaps. Herein, what sets this apart from previously reported chemical substitutions is the utilization of an unusual cationic substitution strategy, represented by [[SZn4 ]S12 + [S4 Zn13 ]S24 + 11ZnS4 ⇒ MS12 + [M4 Cl]S24 + 11GaS4 ], in which the covalent Sx Zny units in the diamond-like sphalerite ZnS are synergistically replaced by cationic Mx Cly units, resulting in two novel salt-inclusion sulfides, M[M4 Cl][Ga11 S20 ] (M = A/Ba, A = K, 1; Rb, 2). As expected, the introduction of mixed cations in the GaS4 anionic frameworks of 1 and 2 leads to wide band gaps (3.04 and 3.01 eV), which exceeds the value of AgGaS2 , facilitating the improvement of high LIDTs (9.4 and 10.3 × AgGaS2 @1.06 µm, respectively). Furthermore, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit moderate second-harmonic generation intensities (0.84 and 0.78 × AgGaS2 @2.9 µm, respectively), mainly originating from the orderly packing tetrahedral GaS4 units. Importantly, this study demonstrates the successful application of the cationic substitution strategy based on diamond-like structures to provide a feasible chemical design insight for constructing high-performance NLO materials.

RESUMO

Based on the N-redox mechanism, a turn-on near-infrared fluorescence probe (SWJT-15) with cyano isophorone as skeleton was designed and synthesized for the detection of ferrous ions (Fe2+). The probe has a lower detection limit (83 nM) and fast response (200 s) to Fe2+ ions. And the probe has unique selectivity and good anti-interference performance against Fe2+ ions compared to other metal ions. Moreover, the probe has been successfully applied to imaging Fe2+ ions in HeLa cells.

RESUMO

J-aggregation, an effective strategy to extend wavelength, has been considered as a promising method for constructing NIR-II fluorophores. However, due to weak intermolecular interactions, conventional J-aggregates are easily decomposed into monomers in the biological environment. Although adding external carriers could help conventional J-aggregates stabilize, such methods still suffer from high-concentration dependence and are unsuitable for activatable probes design. Besides, these carriers-assisted nanoparticles are risky of disassembly in lipophilic environment. Herein, by fusing the precipitated dye (HPQ) which has orderly self-assembly structure, onto simple hemi-cyanine conjugated system, we construct a series of activatable, high-stability NIR-II-J-aggregates which overcome conventional J-aggregates carrier's dependence and could in situ self-assembly in vivo. Further, we employ the NIR-II-J-aggregates probe HPQ-Zzh-B to achieve the long-term in situ imaging of tumor and precise tumor resection by NIR-II imaging navigation for reducing lung metastasis. We believe this strategy will advance the development of controllable NIR-II-J-aggregates and precise bioimaging in vivo.

RESUMO

A crystal structure with a diamond-like anionic framework belongs to a non-centrosymmetric macrostructure due to the aligned arrangement of tetrahedral units, meeting the premise of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, two new Hg-based sulphides, namely RbHg4Ga5S12 (1) and CsHg4Ga5S12 (2), which are isostructural and crystallise in the trigonal space group R3, are successfully isolated in sealed silica tubes by a solid-state reaction. The features of their three-dimensional open honeycomb frameworks are attributed to the parallel alignment of tetrahedral MS4 (M is disordered by 0.444 Hg and 0.555 Ga) building motifs, accompanied by Rb+ (or Cs+) reseating in the cavities. Notably, although the band gap values of 1 and 2 are 2.30 and 2.36 eV, separately, their thermal expansion anisotropies (0.15 and 0.41, respectively) are favourable for achieving laser-induced damage thresholds (5.6 and 5.8 times that of AgGaS2 for 1 and 2, respectively). In addition, the strong polarisability of tetrahedral MS4 building motifs in the diamond-like anionic structures is responsible for the promising second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensities (1.1 and 1.8 times that of AgGaS2 for 1 and 2, respectively) in the particle size range of 50-75 µm with non-phase-matchable behaviour at 1910 nm. Furthermore, theoretical investigation elaborates that electron transitions in compounds 1 and 2 mainly occur from valence band S-3p to conduction band Hg-6s and Ga-4s states, demonstrating that the linear and nonlinear optical properties originate primarily from the synergy of tetrahedral MS4 units.

RESUMO

Probes allowing high-contrast discrimination of cancer cells and effective retention are powerful tools for the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. However, conventional small-molecule probes often show limited performance in both aspects. Herein, we report an ingenious molecular engineering strategy for tuning the cellular uptake and retention of rhodamine dyes. Introduction of polar aminoethyl leads to the increased brightness and reduced cellular uptake of dyes, and this change can be reversed by amino acetylation. Moreover, these modifications allow cancer cells to take up more dyes than normal cells (16-fold) through active transport. Specifically, we further improve the signal contrast (56-fold) between cancer and normal cells by constructing activatable probes and confirm that the released fluorophore can remain in cancer cells with extended time, enabling long-term and specific tumor imaging.

RESUMO

Afterglow luminescence (long persistent luminescence) holds great potential for nonbackground molecular imaging. However, current afterglow probes are mainly nanoparticles, and afterglow imaging systems based on organic small molecules are still lacking and have rarely been reported. Moreover, the lack of reactive sites and a universal molecular scaffold makes it difficult to design activatable afterglow probes. To address these issues, this study reports a novel kind of hemicyanine-based molecule scaffolds with stimuli-responsive afterglow luminescence, which is dependent on an intramolecular cascade photoreaction between 1O2 and the afterglow molecule to store the photoenergy for delayed luminescence after light cessation. As a proof of concept, three modular activatable molecular afterglow probes (MAPs) with a "four-in-one" molecular design by integrating a stimuli-responsive unit, 1O2-generating unit, 1O2-capturing unit, and luminescent unit into one probe are customized for quantification and imaging of targets including pH, superoxide anions, and aminopeptidase. Notably, MAPs show higher sensitivity in afterglow imaging than in fluorescence imaging because the responsive unit simultaneously controls the initiation of fluorescence (S1 to S0) and 1O2 generation (S1 to T1). Finally, MAPs are applied for high-contrast afterglow imaging of drug-induced hepatotoxicity, which is poorly evaluated in clinics and drug discovery. By reporting the sequential occurrence of oxidative stress and upregulation of aminopeptidase, such activatable afterglow probes allow noninvasive imaging of hepatotoxicity earlier than the serological and histology manifestation, indicating their promise for early diagnosis of hepatotoxicity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematological malignancy with high molecular and clinical heterogeneity, and is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. Due to limited treatment options, AML is prone to relapse and has a poor prognosis. Excision repair cross-complementing 3 (ERCC3) is an important member of nucleotide excision repair (NER) that is overexpressed in types of solid cancers and potentially regarded as a prognostic factor. However, its role in AML remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore ERCC3 expression and functions in AML. METHODS: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus) were used to test the accuracy of ERCC3 expression levels for AML diagnosis. Using online databases and R packages, we also explored the signaling pathway, epigenetic regulation, infiltration of immune cells, clinical prognostic value, and ceRNA network in AML. RESULTS: Our results revealed that ERCC3 expression was increased in AML and that high ERCC3 expression had good value for disease-free survival and overall survival in AML patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). We found that ERCC3 and co-expressed genes were mainly involved in chemical carcinogenesis/reactive oxygen species, ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation and oxidative phosphorylation. In addition, almost all the m6A-related coding genes (except GF2BP1) were positively associated with ERCC3 expression. We also constructed a ceRNA regulatory network containing ERCC3 in AML and identified 6 pairs of ceRNA networks, indicating that ERCC3 expression is regulated by a noncoding RNA system. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that ERCC3 was overexpressed in AML and that high ERCC3 expression can be considered a biomarker conducive to allo-HSCT in AML patients.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to improve the qualified rate of hand hygiene and reduce the incidence of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: A hand hygiene questionnaire was distributed to patients during home visits and outpatient visits in 2015 and 2020. Hand-washing practices were evaluated by collecting cultures from the hands of patients after hand washing, evaluating their household environment, and recording the antimicrobial resistance of pathogenic bacteria. RESULTS: Compared to patients in 2015, patients in 2020 had fewer errors in hand washing (p < 0.05), but the rate of qualification after hand washing was lower (p < 0.01). Furthermore, patients who used hand disinfectants after washing had a higher qualified rate. Coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CNS) was the most common isolated bacteria. From 2015 to 2020, the annual incidence of CNS PD peritonitis did not decrease, while the proportion of methicillin-resistant CNS decreased. CONCLUSION: The use of hand disinfectants after standard hand washing may help reduce the incidence of peritonitis in PD patients.

RESUMO

Objective: Hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha (HIF-1α) functions as a crucial transcriptional mediator in hypoxic and ischemic brain response. We endeavored to assess the prognostic significance of serum HIF-1α in human aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods: In this prospective, longitudinal, multicenter, and observational study of 257 patients with aSAH and 100 healthy controls, serum HIF-1α levels were quantified. Univariate analyses, followed by multivariate analyses, were performed to discern the relationship between serum HIF-1α levels and severity and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) plus poststroke 6-month poor outcome [extended Glasgow outcome scale (GOSE) scores of 1-4]. Predictive efficiency was determined under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: There were significantly increased serum HIF-lα levels after aSAH, in comparison to controls (median, 288.0 vs. 102.6 pg/ml; P < 0.001). Serum HIF-lα levels were independently correlated with Hunt-Hess scores [ß, 78.376; 95% confidence interval (CI): 56.446-100.305; P = 0.001] and modified Fisher scores (ß, 52.037; 95% CI: 23.461-80.614; P = 0.002). Serum HIF-lα levels displayed significant efficiency for discriminating DCI risk [area under ROC curve (AUC), 0.751; 95% CI: 0.687-0.815; P < 0.001] and poor outcome (AUC, 0.791; 95% CI: 0.736-0.846; P < 0.001). Using the Youden method, serum HIF-1α levels >229.3 pg/ml predicted the development of DCI with 92.3% sensitivity and 48.4% specificity and serum HIF-1α levels >384.0 pg/ml differentiated the risk of a poor prognosis with 71.4% sensitivity and 81.1% specificity. Serum HIF-1α levels >229.3 pg/ml were independently predictive of DCI [odds ratio (OR), 3.061; 95% CI: 1.045-8.965; P = 0.041] and serum HIF-1α levels >384.0 pg/ml were independently associated with a poor outcome (OR, 2.907; 95% CI: 1.403-6.024; P = 0.004). The DCI predictive ability of their combination was significantly superior to those of Hunt-Hess scores (AUC, 0.800; 95% CI: 0.745-0.855; P = 0.039) and modified Fisher scores (AUC, 0.784; 95% CI: 0.726-0.843; P = 0.004). The prognostic predictive ability of their combination substantially exceeded those of Hunt-Hess scores (AUC, 0.839; 95% CI: 0.791-0.886; P < 0.001) and modified Fisher scores (AUC, 0.844; 95% CI: 0.799-0.890; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Elevated serum HIF-lα levels after aSAH, in independent correlation with stroke severity, were independently associated with DCI and 6-month poor outcome, substantializing serum HIF-lα as a potential prognostic biomarker of aSAH.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Due to recent developments and the wide application of percutaneous transforaminal discectomy (PTED), we herein compare it with microendoscopic discectomy (MED) and traditional open surgery (OD) through surgical indicators and postoperative outcomes to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive surgery PTED. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in line with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO2018: CRD42018094890). We searched four English and two Chinese databases from the date of their establishment to May 2022. Randomized controlled trials and case-control studies of PTED versus MED or PTED versus OD in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation were retrieved. RESULTS: A total of 33 studies with 6467 cases were included. When comparing MED with PTED, the latter had less intraoperative blood loss, smaller incision, shorter postoperative bed times, shorter hospitalization times, better postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) for low back pain, and postoperative dysfunction index (Oswestry Disability Index, ODI) and higher recurrence rates and revision rates. However, operation times, postoperative VAS leg scores and complications, and successful operation rates were similar in both groups. Comparison of PTED with OD revealed in the former less intraoperative blood loss and smaller incision, shorter postoperative bed times, shorter hospitalization times, shorter operation times, and higher recurrence rates and revision rates. Nonetheless, comprehensive postoperative VAS scores, VAS leg pain scores, VAS low back pain, ODI and incidence of complications, and successful operation rates were similar between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic effect and safety of PTED, MED and OD in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation were comparable. PTED had obvious advantages in that it is minimally invasive, with rapid recovery after surgery, but its recurrence rates and revision rates were higher than MED and OD. Therefore, it is not possible to blindly consider replacing MED and OD with PTED.

RESUMO

Much of early western research has focused on identity. A primed identity can inhibit the priming of other alternative identities, and also negatively affect the intention to purchase products related to those alternative identities. In western culture, individuals operate within a cultural framework that makes them more likely to prioritize their own goals and less likely to rely on environmental factors when evaluating others. Individuals are more likely to choose products that fit their primed identity. In this study, we suggest that in collectivist Chinese culture, individuals may give priority to group-level goals and attach more importance to situational factors when evaluating others. Therefore, a primed identity may not necessarily inhibit the priming of alternative identities. In this research, we examine the association between a focal identity and alternative identities, with particular emphasis on the accessibility, discrepancies, and effects on purchase intention of alternative identities. We also examine the intent to purchase products related to the alternative identity vs. the focal identity, developing a model with which to explore this construct. We test four hypotheses through experiments using an online questionnaire and analyzing the resulting data using statistical product service solutions (SPSS) 22.0 and the PROCESS macro modeling tool. The results are as follows: First, the association between a focal identity and alternative identity has a positive impact on the accessibility of the alternative identity. The clearer the alternative identity is, the greater the impact of the association between the focal identity and alternative identity on the latter's accessibility. Second, the accessibility of the alternative identity has a positive impact on the intent to purchase alternative identity vs. focal identity-related products. The greater the discrepancy between the focal identity and the alternative identity, the greater the impact on the intent to purchase alternative identity vs. focal identity-related products. The results of this study confirmed the interaction between identity association and the clarity of the alternative identity, as well as the influence of the accessibility of the alternative identity on the intent to purchase alternative identity vs. focal identity-related products. We contribute to the development of a theory on intention to purchase identity-related products.

RESUMO

Plants can improve their resistance to a variety of stresses by forming mutualistic relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The 14-3-3 protein is a major regulator of the plant stress response. However, the regulation mechanism of 14-3-3 family protein genes (14-3-3s) of mycorrhizal plants coping with stress during AMF symbiosis remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the physiological changes and 14-3-3 expression profiles of Populus cathayana inoculated with AMF under different water conditions. The results showed that good colonization and symbiotic relationships with plants were formed under all water conditions (63.00% to 83.67%). Photosynthesis, peroxidase (POD) activity, and Mg and Ca content were significantly affected by drought and AMF. In addition, thirteen 14-3-3 protein genes (PcGRF1-PcGRF13) were identified by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), of which the expression levels of PcGRF10 and PcGRF11 induced by AMF were significantly positively correlated with superoxide dismutase (SOD), POD, and sugar content, indicating that the 14-3-3s of mycorrhizal symbiotic plants may respond to drought through antioxidant and osmotic regulation. This is the first study on 14-3-3s in the symbiosis system of forest arbor plants and AMF, and it may help to further study the effects of 14-3-3s during AMF symbiosis on stresses and provide new ideas for improving mycorrhizal seedling cultivation under stress. IMPORTANCE The 14-3-3 protein may regulate many biochemical and physiological processes under abiotic stress. Studies have shown that the 14-3-3 protein gene of AMF is not only upregulated under drought stress, but also enhances the regulation of AMF on plant drought tolerance by regulating plant signal pathways and drought response genes; however, knowledge about the biological relevance of these interactions remains limited and controversial. The precise functions of Populus cathayana 14-3-3s under drought stress remain poorly resolved and the mechanisms of action of these genes in mycorrhizae-induced drought stress are still unknown. Thus, studying the drought-resistance mechanism of the AMF symbiotic plant 14-3-3 gene is of special significance to improving the drought tolerance of the plant. Further systematic study is needed to probe the mechanism by which AMF regulates different 14-3-3 genes and their subsequent physiological effects on drought.

RESUMO

The therapeutic effect of CAR-T is often accompanied by sCRS, which is the main obstacle to the promotion of CAR-T therapy. The JAK1/2 inhibitor ruxolitinib has recently been confirmed as clinically effective in maintaining control over sCRS, however, its mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we firstly revealed that ruxolitinib significantly inhibited the proliferation of CAR-T cells without damaging viability, and induced an efficacy-favored differentiation phenotype. Second, ruxolitinib reduced the level of cytokine release not only from CAR-T cells, but also from other cells in the immune system. Third, the cytolytic activity of CAR-T cells was restored once the ruxolitinib was removed; however, the cytokines released from the CAR-T cells maintained an inhibited state to some degree. Finally, ruxolitinib significantly reduced the proliferation rate of CAR-T cells in vivo without affecting the therapeutic efficacy after withdrawal at the appropriate dose. We demonstrated pre-clinically that ruxolitinib interferes with both CAR-T cells and the other immune cells that play an important role in triggering sCRS reactions. This work provides useful and important scientific data for clinicians on the question of whether ruxolitinib has an effect on CAR-T cell function loss causing CAR-T treatment failure when applied in the treatment of sCRS, the answer to which is of great clinical significance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To profile gut microbiome-associated metabolites in serum and investigate whether these metabolites could distinguish individuals with colorectal cancer (CRC) or adenoma from normal healthy individuals. DESIGN: Integrated analysis of untargeted serum metabolomics by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and metagenome sequencing of paired faecal samples was applied to identify gut microbiome-associated metabolites with significantly altered abundance in patients with CRC and adenoma. The ability of these metabolites to discriminate between CRC and colorectal adenoma was tested by targeted metabolomic analysis. A model based on gut microbiome-associated metabolites was established and evaluated in an independent validation cohort. RESULTS: In total, 885 serum metabolites were significantly altered in both CRC and adenoma, including eight gut microbiome-associated serum metabolites (GMSM panel) that were reproducibly detected by both targeted and untargeted metabolomics analysis and accurately discriminated CRC and adenoma from normal samples. A GMSM panel-based model to predict CRC and colorectal adenoma yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.98 (95% CI 0.94 to 1.00) in the modelling cohort and an AUC of 0.92 (83.5% sensitivity, 84.9% specificity) in the validation cohort. The GMSM model was significantly superior to the clinical marker carcinoembryonic antigen among samples within the validation cohort (AUC 0.92 vs 0.72) and also showed promising diagnostic accuracy for adenomas (AUC=0.84) and early-stage CRC (AUC=0.93). CONCLUSION: Gut microbiome reprogramming in patients with CRC is associated with alterations of the serum metabolome, and GMSMs have potential applications for CRC and adenoma detection.

RESUMO

Introduction: In recent years, as the concept of minimally invasive treatment has been accepted by the majority of patients, the application of percutaneous vertebroplasty in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures has gradually increased, and research on the adverse complications of bone cement leakage has gradually deepened. Case: Here, we report a rare case of acute pancreatitis after vertebroplasty. The patient had no previous history of pancreatitis and presented with obvious abdominal pain after vertebroplasty. Abdominal CT examination revealed that the leaking bone cement penetrated the anterior wall of the L1 vertebral body into the diaphragm, and the heat released by the polymerization reaction caused inflammation and damage to the adjacent pancreas, resulting in poor blood flow to the pancreatic tissue and leading to acute pancreatitis. Early postoperative symptomatic treatment was given to the patient, and the corresponding symptoms were gradually relieved. During postoperative follow-up, the leaking cement did not degrade, but the patient had no symptoms. Conclusion: Lesions of adjacent organs caused by bone cement leakage are rare, and clinicians often ignore the association between such complications and vertebroplasty. This case report will provide guidance and a reference for clinicians.

RESUMO

The simultaneous effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and abscisic acid (ABA) on the tolerance of plants to heavy metal (HM) remain unclear. A pot experiment was carried out to clarify the effects of simultaneous applications of AM fungi and ABA on plant growth, Zn accumulation, endogenous ABA contents, proline metabolism, and the oxidative injury of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) exposed to excess Zn stress. The results suggested that exogenously applied ABA positively enhanced AM colonization, and that the growth of plants only with AM fungi was improved by ABA application. Under Zn stress, AM inoculation and ABA application increased the ABA content in the root/leaf (increased by 48-172% and 92%, respectively) and Zn content in the root/shoot (increased by 63-152% and 61%, respectively) in AM plants, but no similar trends were observed in NM plants. Additionally, exogenous ABA addition increased the proline contents of NM roots concomitantly with the activities of the related synthases, whereas it reduced the proline contents and the activity of Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase in AM roots. Under Zn stress, AM inoculation and ABA application decreased H2O2 contents and the production rate of O2, to varying degrees. Furthermore, in the roots exposed to Zn stress, AM inoculation augmented the activities of SOD, CAT, POD and APX, and exogenously applied ABA increased the activities of SOD and POD. Overall, AM inoculation combined with ABA application might be beneficial to the survival of black locust under Zn stress by improving AM symbiosis, inhibiting the transport of Zn from the roots to the shoots, increasing the distribution of ABA in roots, and stimulating antioxidant defense systems.

RESUMO

AIM: To understand retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening and treatment preferences among Chinese ophthalmologists. METHODS: A Chinese language survey was administered anonymously using WebQ (Catalyst, Seattle, WA, USA) among Chinese ROP screeners from December 2016 to January 2017. RESULTS: Among 70 ophthalmologists contacted, 65 responded (93%; 78% female, mean age 40y, 57% pediatric ophthalmologists and 25% retina specialists). Most used screening criteria of birth weight ≤2 kg (62%) with variation in cut-off gestational age (≤37wk, 34%; ≤34wk, 22%; ≤32wk, 31%). RetCam (Natus Medical Incorporated, Pleasanton, CA, USA) wide-field fundus photography assisted most screeners (72%) and was exclusively used by many (29%). Among 55 ophthalmologists treating ROP, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was preferred over laser for both zone I (76% vs 24%) and zone II ROP (58% vs 42%). Retina specialists (P=0.004) and ophthalmologists with >3mo of training (P=0.03) were more likely to use anti-VEGF over laser for zone I ROP. Lack of laser training (8/20, 40%), access (6/20, 30%) and anesthesia (4/20, 20%) were common barriers to laser treatment. CONCLUSION: Chinese ROP screeners favor anti-VEGF injection and RetCam imaging for ROP management. A better understanding of ROP screening and treatment informs future research and education efforts in China.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The postoperative risk factors for electroencephalogram(EEG) abnormalities after paediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) remain to be identified. We investigated the characteristics of EEG abnormalities and risk factors in routine clinical management post-CPB. METHODS: EEG and cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO2) were monitored in 96 patients (aged 3 days, 37 months, median 5 months) for 72 h post-CPB. Clinical measurements included 4-hourly arterial and central venous pressure, arterial blood gases, doses of inotropic and vasoactive drugs, daily C-reactive protein (CRP) and NT-proB-type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP). Demographics, STAT categories and outcomes (duration of mechanical ventilation,CICU stay) were recorded. Un. RESULTS: Seizures occurred in 20 patients (20.8%) beginning at 0-48 hand lasting 10 min-31 h; background abnormalities occurred in 67 (69.8%) beginning at 0-8 h and lasting 4-48 h. Patients with EEG abnormalities had worse outcomes. In univariable regression, seizures positively correlated with STAT categories, CPB time, temperature, blood pressure, central venous pressure, NT-proBNP, CRP, lactate and epinephrine, negatively with ScO2 and PaCO2 (P < 0.001 for lactate and epinephrine, P < 0.1 for the remaining). The degree of background abnormalities positively correlated with STAT categories, CPB time, operative time, central venous pressure, milrinone, negatively with blood pressure (P = 0.0003-0.087); it negatively correlated with lower dose of epinephrine (P < 0.001) and positively with higher dose (P = 0.03l). In multivariable regression, seizures positively correlated with epinephrine, lactate and temperature; the background abnormality correlations remain significant except for milrinone and operative time (P < 0.001 for epinephrine, P < 0.05 for the remaining). CONCLUSIONS: Numerous perioperative risk factors are associated with EEG abnormalities post-CPB. The most significant and consistent risk factor is epinephrine.
