RESUMO

Spin-orbit couplings (SOCs), originating from the relativistic corrections in the Dirac equation, offer nonlinearity in the classical limit and are capable of driving chaotic dynamics. In a nanoscale quantum dot confined by a two-dimensional parabolic potential with SOCs, various quantum scar states emerge quasi-periodically in the eigenstates of the system, when the ratio of confinement energies in the two directions is nearly commensurable. The scars, displaying both quantum interference and classical trajectory features on the electron density, due to relativistic effects, serve as a bridge between the classical and quantum behaviors of the system. When the strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus SOCs are identical, the chaos in the classical limit is eliminated as the classical Hamilton's equations become linear, leading to the disappearance of all quantum scar states. Importantly, the quantum scars induced by SOCs are robust against small perturbations of system parameters. With precise control achievable through external gating, the quantum scar induced by Rashba SOC is fully controllable and detectable.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of low and standard pneumoperitoneal pressure (PP) on the occurrence of gas embolism during laparoscopic liver resection (LLR). BACKGROUND: LLR has an increased risk of gas embolism. Although animal studies have shown that low PP reduces the occurrence of gas embolism, clinical evidence is lacking. METHODS: This parallel, dual-arm, double-blind, randomized controlled trial included 141 patients undergoing elective LLR. Patients were randomized into standard ("S," 15 mm Hg; n = 70) or low ("L," 10 mm Hg; n = 71) PP groups. Severe gas embolism (≥ grade 3, based on the Schmandra microbubble method) was detected using transesophageal echocardiography and recorded as the primary outcome. Intraoperative vital signs and postoperative recovery profiles were also evaluated. RESULTS: Fewer severe gas embolism cases (n = 29, 40.8% vs n = 47, 67.1%, P = 0.003), fewer abrupt decreases in end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure, shorter severe gas embolism duration, less peripheral oxygen saturation reduction, and fewer increases in heart rate and lactate during gas embolization episodes was found in group L than in group S. Moreover, a higher arterial partial pressure of oxygen and peripheral oxygen saturation were observed, and fewer fluids and vasoactive drugs were administered in group L than in group S. In both groups, the distensibility index of the inferior vena cava negatively correlated with central venous pressure throughout LLR, and a comparable quality of recovery was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Low PP reduced the incidence and duration of severe gas embolism and achieved steadier hemodynamics and vital signs during LLR. Therefore, a low PP strategy can be considered a valuable choice for the future LLR.

RESUMO

High-quality transition metal tellurides, especially for WTe2, have been demonstrated to be necessarily synthesized under close environments and high temperatures, which are restricted by the low formation Gibbs free energy, thus limiting the electrochemical reaction mechanism and application studies. Here, we report a low-temperature colloidal synthesis of few-layer WTe2 nanostructures with lateral sizes around hundreds of nanometers, which could be tuned the aggregation state to obtain the nanoflowers or nanosheets by using different surfactant agents. The crystal phase and chemical composition of WTe2 nanostructures were analyzed by combining the characterization of X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging and elements mapping. The as-synthesized WTe2 nanostructures and its hybrid catalysts were found to show an excellent HER performance with low overpotential and small Tafel slope. The carbon-based WTe2-GO and WTe2-CNT hybrid catalysts also have been synthesized by the similar strategy to study the electrochemical interface. The energy diagram and microreactor devices have been used to reveal the interface contribution to electrochemical performance, which shows the identical performance results with as-synthesized WTe2-carbon hybrid catalysts. These results summarize the interface design principle for semimetallic or metallic catalysts and also confirm the possible electrochemical applications of two-dimensional transition metal tellurides.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Remimazolam tosilate (RT) is a novel short-acting GABA (A) receptor agonist that has a rapid recovery from procedural sedation and can be fully reversed by flumazenil. To date, there have been relatively few articles comparing RT and propofol for general anesthesia. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of RT with or without flumazenil compared with propofol in general anesthesia for day surgery. METHODS: 115 patients scheduled for day surgery were randomized into three groups: RT (n = 39), RT + flumazenil (n = 38) and propofol (n = 38). The primary endpoints were anesthesia induction time and time until fully alert. Anesthesia success rate, bispectral index (BIS) values, injection pain, opioid and vasopressor dosages, postoperative recovery profiles and perioperative inflammatory and cognitive changes were assessed. Any adverse events were recorded. RESULTS: Induction times were similar among the three groups (P = 0.437), but the median time until fully alert in patients treated with RT was longer than that of the propofol or RT + flumazenil groups (17.6 min vs. 12.3 min vs. 12.3 min, P < 0.001). The three groups had comparable postoperative recovery quality and inflammatory and cognitive state changes (P > 0.05). Smaller percentages of patients who received RT (26.3%) and RT + flumazenil (31.6%) developed hypotension during anesthesia maintenance compared with propofol (68.4%), and consequently less ephedrine (P < 0.001) and phenylephrine (P = 0.015) were needed in the RT group. Furthermore, serum triglyceride levels were lower (P < 0.001) and injection pain was much less frequent in the RT with or without flumazenil groups compared with the propofol group (5.3% vs. 0% vs. 18.4%). CONCLUSION: RT permits rapid induction and comparable recovery profile compared with propofol in general anesthesia for day surgery, but has a prolonged recovery time without flumazenil. The safety profile of RT was superior to propofol in terms of hypotension and injection pain. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry http://www.chictr.org.cn/ (Registration date: 19/7/2021; Trial ID: ChiCTR2100048904).

RESUMO

Owing to the development of intensive care units, many patients survive their initial insults but progress to chronic critical illness (CCI). Patients with CCI are characterized by prolonged hospitalization, poor outcomes, and significant long-term mortality. Some of these patients get into a state of persistent low-grade inflammation, suppressed immunity, and ongoing catabolism, which was defined as persistent inflammation, immunosuppression, and catabolism syndrome (PICS) in 2012. Over the past few years, some progress has been made in the treatment of PICS. However, most of the existing studies are about the role of persistent inflammation and suppressed immunity in PICS. As one of the hallmarks of PICS, hypercatabolism has received little research attention. In this review, we explore the potential pathophysiological changes and molecular mechanisms of hypercatabolism and its role in PICS. In addition, we summarize current therapies for improving the hypercatabolic status and recommendations for patients with PICS.

RESUMO

Visceral hypersensitivity as a common clinical manifestation of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may contribute to the development of chronic visceral pain. Our prior studies authenticated that the activation of the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neurons in paraventricular nucleus (PVN) contributed to visceral hypersensitivity in mice, but puzzles still remain with respect to the underlying hyperactivation of corticotropin-releasing factor neurons. Herein, we employed maternal separation (MS) to establish mouse model of visceral hypersensitivity. The neuronal circuits associated with nociceptive hypersensitivity involved paraventricular nucleus CRF neurons by means of techniques such as behavioral test, pharmacology, molecular biology, retrograde neuronal circuit tracers, electrophysiology, chemogenetics and optogenetics. MS could predispose the elevated firing frequency of CRF neurons in PVN in murine adulthood, which could be annulled via the injection of exogenous GABA (0.3mM, 0.2µl) into PVN. The PVN-projecting GABAergic neurons were mainly distributed in the anterior ventral (AV) region in the bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BNST), wherein the excitability of these GABAergic neurons was reduced. Casp3 virus was utilized to induce apoptosis of GABA neurons in BNST-AV region, resulting in the activation of CRF neurons in PVN and visceral hyperalgesia. In parallel, chemogenetic and optogenetic approaches to activate GABAergic BNSTAV-PVN circuit in MS mice abated the spontaneous firing frequency of PVN CRF neurons and prevented the development of visceral hypersensitivity. A priori, PVNCRF-projecting GABAergic neurons in BNST-AV region participated in the occurrence of visceral hypersensitivity induced by MS. Our research may provide a new insight into the neural circuit mechanism of chronic visceral pain.

RESUMO

As an essential element for quantum information processing and quantum communication, efficient quantum memory based on solid-state platforms is imperative for practical applications but remains a challenge. Here we propose a scheme to realize a highly efficient and controllable storage and routing of single photons based on quantum dots (QDs) with a Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the SOC in the QDs can provide a flexible built-up of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for single-photon propagation, and storage, retrieval, as well as routing of single-photon wavepackets can also be implemented through the EIT. Moreover, we demonstrate that the propagation loss of the single-photon wavepackets in the QDs may be largely suppressed by means of a weak microwave field, by which the storage and routing of the single photons can be made to have high efficiency and fidelity. Our research opens a route for designs of advanced solid-state devices promising for applications in photonic quantum-information processing and transmission based on the QDs with SOC.

RESUMO

A non-reciprocal quantum ring, where one arm of the ring contains the Rashba spin-orbit interaction but not in the other arm, is found to posses very unique electronic properties. In this ring the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are totally absent. That is because in a magnetic field the electron stays in the non-Rashba arm, while it resides in the Rashba arm for zero (or negative) magnetic field. The average kinetic energy in the two arms of the ring are found to be very different. It also reveals different "spin temperature" in the two arms of the non-reciprocal ring. The electrons are sorted according to their spins in different regions of the ring by switching on and off (or reverse) the magnetic field, thereby creating order without doing work on the system. This resembles the action of a demon in the spirit of Maxwell's original proposal, exploiting a non-classical internal degree of freedom. Our demon clearly demonstrates some of the required features on the nanoscale.

RESUMO

Spin textures of one or two electrons in a quantum dot with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings reveal several intriguing properties. We show here that even at the single-electron level stable spin vortices with tunable topological charges exist. These topological textures appear in the ground state of the dots. The textures are stabilized by time-reversal symmetry breaking and are robust against the eccentricity of the dot. The topological charge is directly related to the sign of the z component of the spin in a large dot, allowing a direct probe of its topological properties. This would clearly pave the way to possible future topological spintronics. The phenomenon of spin vortices persists for the interacting two-electron dot in the presence of a magnetic field.

RESUMO

In the presence of a magnetic field and an external periodic potential the Landau level spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas exhibits a fractal pattern in the energy spectrum which is described as the Hofstadter's butterfly. In this work, we develop a Hartree-Fock theory to deal with the electron-electron interaction in the Hofstadter's butterfly state in a finite-size graphene with periodic boundary conditions, where we include both spin and valley degrees of freedom. We then treat the butterfly state as an electron crystal so that we could obtain the order parameters of the crystal in the momentum space and also in an infinite sample. A phase transition between the liquid phase and the fractal crystal phase can be observed. The excitation gaps obtained in the infinite sample is comparable to those in the finite-size study, and agree with a recent experimental observation.

RESUMO

Historically, general convergent syntheses of medium ring heterocycles have been difficult to develop. Herein, we describe the synthesis of five classes of heterocycles: dihydrodibenzo[b,f]azepine, -oxocine, and -thiocine and dibenzo[b,f]azepine and -oxepine using a strategy of alkylation followed by highly selective intramolecular Heck arylation reaction. The hetero-tricyclic compounds were available in only two steps starting from commercially available starting materials.

RESUMO

Guanosine labeled with 15N at N1, amino, and N7 and 13C at either C2 or C8 was oxidized by Rose Bengal photosensitization (singlet oxygen) in buffered aqueous solution. At pH > 7, spiroiminodihydantoin was the major product, while at pH < 7, guanidinohydantoin (Gh) was the principal product. 15N and 13C NMR studies confirmed that Gh was formed as a mixture of slowly equilibrating diastereomers. Experiments conducted in H218O indicated that Gh and Sp each contained one oxygen atom derived from O2 and one from H2O. Tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify the C4 carbonyl of Gh as the one labeled with 18O, supporting a mechanism involving attack of water at C5 of a dehydro-8-oxoguanosine intermediate.

RESUMO

In vitro work in this laboratory has identified new DNA lesions resulting from further oxidation of a common biomarker of oxidative damage, 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (OG). The major product of oxidation of OG in a nucleoside, nucleotide, or single-stranded oligodeoxynucleotide using metal ions that act as one-electron oxidants is the new nucleoside derivative spiroiminodihydantoin (Sp). In duplex DNA an equilibrating mixture of two isomeric products, guanidinohydantoin (Gh) and iminoallantoin (Ia), is produced. These products are also formed by the overall four-electron oxidation of guanosine by photochemical processes involving O(2). DNA template strands containing either Sp or Gh/Ia generally acted as a block to DNA synthesis with the Klenow exo(-) fragment of pol I. However, when nucleotide insertion did occur opposite the lesions, only 2'-deoxyadenosine 5-triphosphate and 2'-deoxyguanine 5-triphosphate were used for primer extension. The Escherichia coli DNA repair enzyme Fpg was able to remove the Sp and Gh/Ia lesions from duplex DNA substrates, although the efficiency was depended on the base opposite the lesion.
