RESUMO

The STRICTA checklist is the guideline for reporting clinical trials undertaken using acupuncture intervention. As an extension of the CONSORT checklist, the STRICTA checklist facilitates the reporting quality of acupuncture clinical trials. The clinical research paradigm changes along with the development of science and technology. It is crucial to ensure whether or not the existing STRICTA checklist guides the reporting clinical trials of acupuncture now and in the future as well. This paper introduces the development and the updating procedure of the STRICTA checklist, analyzes the characteristics of utility and the limitation, and proposes several suggestions on the difficulties and challenges encountered in the implementation of the STRICTA checklist of current version so as to advance the further update and improvement.

RESUMO

Postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) is the most common functional dyspepsia (FD) subtype. Early satiety is one of the cardinal symptoms of the PDS subtype in FD patients. The heterogeneity of symptoms in FD patients hampered therapy for patients based on specific symptoms, necessitating a symptom-based understanding of the pathophysiology of FD. To investigate the correlation between reward circuit and symptom severity of PDS patients, seed (Nucleus accumbens, NAc, a key node in the reward circuit) based resting-state functional connectivity (FC) was applied in the neuroimaging data analysis. The results demonstrated that the patients with PDS manifested strengthened FC between NAc and the caudate, putamen, pallidum, amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and insula. Moreover, the FC between NAc and ACC, insula, thalamus, and hippocampus exhibited significant positive associations with symptom severity. More importantly, the strengthened FC between NAc and the ACC, insula, amygdala, and hippocampus were found associated with the early satiety symptom of patients with PDS. This study indicated that the altered FC of reward circuit regions may play a role in the pathophysiology of patients with PDS, and some of the aberrant NAc-based FC within the reward circuit were more related to the early satiety of patients with PDS. These findings improve our symptom-based understanding of the central pathophysiology of FD, lay the groundwork for an objective diagnosis of FD, and shed light on the precise prescription for treating FD based on symptoms.

RESUMO

Acupuncture has been widely applied for treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Numerous studies have found that acupuncture can effectively alleviate KOA symptoms. With the advancement of neuroimaging techniques, integrating neuroimaging with in-depth investigations of acupuncture mechanisms has emerged as a hot topic in traditional Chinese medical neuroscience research. This review aimed to analyze the study design and main findings from neuroimaging studies of acupuncture-related therapy for KOA to provide a reference for future research. Original studies were sourced from English databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library) and Chinese databases (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the Chongqing VIP database, and Wanfang database). As a result, thirteen articles were ultimately included in this review. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was the most frequently used neuroimaging technique to explore cerebral responses to acupuncture-related therapy for KOA. Findings suggested that acupuncture-related therapy could regulate some brain regions in patients with KOA. Specifically, for acupuncture, it showed that the medial pain pathway and the limbic system were involved in the regulation of KOA. Meanwhile, moxibustion induced a wide range of functional activity throughout the entire brain.

RESUMO

Crowd counting is an important task that serves as a preprocessing step in many applications. Despite obvious improvement reported by various convolutional-neural-network-based approaches, they only focus on the role of deep feature maps while neglecting the importance of shallow features for crowd counting. In order to surmount this issue, a dilated convolutional-neural-network-based cross-level contextual information extraction network is proposed in this work, which is abbreviated as CL-DCNN. Specifically, a dilated contextual module (DCM) is constructed by importing cross-level connection between different feature maps. It can effectively integrate contextual information while conserving the local details of crowd scenes. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art approaches using five public datasets, i.e., ShanghaiTech part A, ShanghaiTech part B, Mall, UCF_CC_50 and UCF-QNRF, achieving MAE 52.6, 8.1, 1.55, 181.8, and 96.4, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic severe functional constipation is a common disease that requires novel and effective treatment strategies. Acupuncture might constitute a promising therapeutic approach for chronic constipation, but it reportedly engenders an enhanced placebo response. Herein, we aimed to determine the magnitude of the placebo responses to electroacupuncture for constipation and identify its influencing factors. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized trial, patients were randomized to a sham electroacupuncture group, which was administered for 8 weeks in 24 sessions of superficial needling at nonacupoints. The placebo response rates were assessed using three responder criteria: ≥3 complete spontaneous bowel movements per week (CSBMs/week), overall CSBM, and sustained CSBM. Logistic regression with backward selection method was employed to identify the potential factors that affected the placebo response. KEY RESULTS: Overall, 539 patients were included in the study. The placebo response rate was 10.58%, 9.46%, and 9.09% according to the three aforementioned criteria, respectively. Those who exhibited more CSBMs/week at baseline were more likely to respond to sham electroacupuncture. Among patients with more than one CSBM per week at baseline, the response rates for achieving the criteria of ≥3 CSBMs per week, overall CSBM, and sustained CSBM were 25.40%, 30.16%, and 22.22%. CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCE: Electroacupuncture did not demonstrate a large placebo response in functional constipation treatment. The number of CSBMs at baseline may be a moderator of the placebo response to sham electroacupuncture. Thus, superficial needling sham acupuncture may be considered an ideal sham control for clinical trials of chronic constipation.

RESUMO

In this study, we prepared two-dimensional Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets doped with rare earth ions. The experimental results show that Bi4-xTmxTi3O12 exhibits the highest reduction performance among various rare earth doped Bi4Ti3O12 materials, with a CO yield of 7.25 µmol g-1h-1. Furthermore, a delayed reaction in Bi3.97Tm0.03Ti3O12 is observed upon a cessation of light irradiation. Theoretical calculations reveal that the introduction of Tm ion not only reduces the surface energy of (001) plane and make it preferential growth in Bi4Ti3O12, but also brings the intervening energy level of Tm ion (4f and 4d mixed orbital), which is closer to the conduction band of Bi4Ti3O12 and facilitates charge carrier accumulation in trap states. The electrons retained in the shallow traps promote the hysteresis reaction following a cessation of illumination. This work provides further insights into elucidating precise reduction reaction mechanisms underlying rare earth dopant on photocatalysts. This research provides enhanced insights into unraveling the precise reduction reaction mechanisms influenced by rare earth dopants in photocatalysts.

RESUMO

Background: The effectiveness of acupuncture and tuina in treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is still controversial, which limits their clinical application in practice. This study aims to evaluate the short-term and long-term effectiveness of acupuncture and tuina on KOA. Methods/design: This parallel-group, multicenter randomized clinical trial (RCT) will be conducted at the outpatient clinic of five traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in China. Three hundred and thirty participants with KOA will be randomly assigned to acupuncture, tuina, or home-based exercise group with a ratio of 1:1:1. The primary outcome is the proportion of participants achieving a minimal clinically important improvement defined as a ≥ 12% reduction on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain dimension on short term (week 8) and long term (week 26) compared with baseline. Secondary outcomes are knee joint conditions (pain, function, and stiffness), self-efficacy of arthritis, quality of life, and psychological conditions, which will be evaluated by the WOMAC score and the Patient Global Assessment (PGA), and in addition, the respondents index of OMERACT-OARSI, Short Form 12 Health Survey (SF-12), arthritis self-efficacy scale, and European five-dimensional health scale (EQ-5D). Adverse events will be collected by self-reported questionnaires predefined. Clinical trial registration: https://www.chictr.org.cn.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Currently, more and more infertility couples are opting for combined acupuncture to improve success rate of in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, evidence from acupuncture for improving IVF pregnancy outcomes remains a matter of debate. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively summarized the evidence of the efficacy of acupuncture among women undergoing IVF by means of systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Four English (PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Clinical Trials) and Four Chinese databases (Wanfang Databases, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, and SinoMed) were searched from database inception until July 2, 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the acupuncture's effects for women undergoing IVF were included. The subgroup analysis was conducted with respect to the age of participants, different acupuncture types, type of control, acupuncture timing, geographical origin of the study, whether or not repeated IVF failure, and acupuncture sessions. Sensitivity analyses were predefifined to explore the robustness of results. The primary outcomes were clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and live birth rate (LBR), and the secondary outcomes were ongoing pregnancy rate and miscarriage rate. Random effects model with I2 statistics were used to quantify heterogeneity. Publication bias was estimated by funnel plots and Egger's tests. RESULTS: A total of 58 eligible RCTs representing 10,968 women undergoing IVF for pregnant success were identifified. Pooled CPR and LBR showed a signifificant difference between acupuncture and control groups [69 comparisons, relative risk (RR) 1.19, 95% confifidence intervals (CI) 1.12 to 1.25, I2=0], extremely low evidence; 23 comparisons, RR 1.11, 95%CI 1.02 to 1.21, I2=14.6, low evidence, respectively). Only transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation showed a positive effect on both CPR (16 comparisons, RR 1.17, 95%CI 1.06 to 1.29; I2=0, moderate evidence) and LBR (9 comparisons, RR 1.20, 95%CI 1.04 to 1.37; I2=8.5, extremely low evidence). Heterogeneity across studies was found and no studies were graded as high-quality evidence. CONCLUSION: Results showed that the convincing evidence levels on the associations between acupuncture and IVF pregnant outcomes were relatively low, and the varied methodological design and heterogeneity might inflfluence the fifindings. RESUMO

Whilst acupuncture has been shown to be an effective treatment for functional dyspepsia (FD), its efficacy varies significantly among patients. Knowing beforehand how each patient responds to acupuncture treatment will facilitate the ability to produce personalized prescriptions, therefore, improving acupuncture efficacy. The objective of this study was to construct the prediction model, based on the clinical-neuroimaging signature, to forecast the individual symptom improvement of FD patients following a 4-week acupuncture treatment and to identify the critical predictive features that could potentially serve as biomarkers for predicting the efficacy of acupuncture for FD. Clinical-functional brain connectivity signatures were extracted from samples in the training-test set (100 FD patients) and independent validation set (60 FD patients). Based on these signatures and support vector machine algorithms, prediction models were developed in the training test set, followed by model performance evaluation and predictive features extraction. Subsequently, the external robustness of the extracted predictive features in predicting acupuncture efficacy was evaluated by the independent validation set. The developed prediction models possessed an accuracy of 88% in predicting acupuncture responders, as well as an R2 of 0.453 in forecasting symptom relief. Factors that contributed significantly to stronger responsiveness of patients to acupuncture therapy included higher resting-state functional connectivity associated with the orbitofrontal gyrus, caudate, hippocampus, and anterior insula, as well as higher baseline scores of the Symptom Index of Dyspepsia and shorter durations of the condition. Furthermore, the robustness of these features in predicting the efficacy of acupuncture for FD was verified through various machine learning algorithms and independent samples and remained stable in univariate and multivariate analyses. These findings suggest that it is both feasible and reliable to predict the efficacy of acupuncture for FD based on the pre-treatment clinical-neuroimaging signature. The established prediction framework will promote the identification of suitable candidates for acupuncture treatment, thereby improving the efficacy and reducing the cost of acupuncture for FD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent and debilitating condition that poses a significant burden on healthcare systems. Acupuncture has been proposed as a promising intervention for LBP, but the evidence supporting its specific effect is insufficient, and the use of sham acupuncture as a control in clinical trials presents challenges due to variations in sham acupuncture techniques and the magnitude of the placebo effect. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the magnitude of the placebo response of sham acupuncture in trials of acupuncture for nonspecific LBP, and to assess whether different types of sham acupuncture are associated with different responses. METHODS: Four databases including PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library were searched through April 15, 2023, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included if they randomized patients with LBP to receive acupuncture or sham acupuncture intervention. The main outcomes included the placebo response in pain intensity, back-specific function and quality of life. Placebo response was defined as the change in these outcome measures from baseline to the end of treatment. Random-effects models were used to synthesize the results, standardized mean differences (SMDs, Hedges'g) were applied to estimate the effect size. RESULTS: A total of 18 RCTs with 3,321 patients were included. Sham acupuncture showed a noteworthy pooled placebo response in pain intensity in patients with LBP [SMD -1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.95 to -0.91, I2=89%]. A significant placebo response was also shown in back-specific functional status (SMD -0.49, 95% CI -0.70 to -0.29, I2=73%), but not in quality of life (SMD 0.34, 95% CI -0.20 to 0.88, I2=84%). Trials in which the sham acupuncture penetrated the skin or performed with regular needles had a significantly higher placebo response in pain intensity reduction, but other factors such as the location of sham acupuncture did not have a significant impact on the placebo response. CONCLUSIONS: Sham acupuncture is associated with a large placebo response in pain intensity among patients with LBP. Researchers should also be aware that the types of sham acupuncture applied may potentially impact the evaluation of the efficacy of acupuncture. Nonetheless, considering the nature of placebo response, the effect of other contextual factors cannot be ruled out in this study. (PROSPERO registration No. CRD42022304416).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The placebo response of sham acupuncture in patients with primary dysmenorrhea is a substantial factor associated with analgesia. However, the magnitude of the placebo response is unclear. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis assessed the effects of sham acupuncture in patients with primary dysmenorrhea and the factors contributing to these effects. SEARCH STRATEGY: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were searched from inception up to August 20, 2022. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using sham acupuncture as a control for female patients of reproductive age with primary dysmenorrhea were included. DATA EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS: Pain intensity, retrospective symptom scale, and health-related quality of life were outcome measures used in these trials. Placebo response was defined as the change in the outcome of interest from baseline to endpoint. We used standardized mean difference (SMD) to estimate the effect size of the placebo response. RESULTS: Thirteen RCTs were included. The pooled placebo response size for pain intensity was the largest (SMD = -0.99; 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.31 to -0.68), followed by the retrospective symptom scale (Total frequency rating score: SMD = -0.20; 95% CI, -0.80 to -0.39. Average severity score: SMD = -0.35; 95% CI, -0.90 to -0.20) and physical component of SF-36 (SMD = 0.27; 95% CI, -0.17 to 0.72). Studies using blunt-tip needles, single-center trials, studies with a low risk of bias, studies in which patients had a longer disease course, studies in which clinicians had < 5 years of experience, and trials conducted outside Asia were more likely to have a lower placebo response. CONCLUSION: Strong placebo response and some relative factors were found in patients with primary dysmenorrhea. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022304215. RESUMO

Acupuncture is effective in treating functional dyspepsia (FD), while its efficacy varies significantly from different patients. Predicting the responsiveness of different patients to acupuncture treatment based on the objective biomarkers would assist physicians to identify the candidates for acupuncture therapy. One hundred FD patients were enrolled, and their clinical characteristics and functional brain MRI data were collected before and after treatment. Taking the pre-treatment functional brain network as features, we constructed the support vector machine models to predict the responsiveness of FD patients to acupuncture treatment. These features contributing critically to the accurate prediction were identified, and the longitudinal analyses of these features were performed on acupuncture responders and non-responders. Results demonstrated that prediction models achieved an accuracy of 0.76 ± 0.03 in predicting acupuncture responders and non-responders, and a R2 of 0.24 ± 0.02 in predicting dyspeptic symptoms relief. Thirty-eight functional brain network features associated with the orbitofrontal cortex, caudate, hippocampus, and anterior insula were identified as the critical predictive features. Changes in these predictive features were more pronounced in responders than in non-responders. In conclusion, this study provided a promising approach to predicting acupuncture efficacy for FD patients and is expected to facilitate the optimization of personalized acupuncture treatment plans for FD.

RESUMO

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction. Previous studies have demonstrated a wide range of abnormalities in functional brain activity and connectivity patterns in FD. However, the connectivity pattern of the subcortical network (SCN), which is a hub of visceral information transmission and processing, remains unclear in FD patients. The study compared the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and the global and nodal topological properties of SCN between 109 FD patients and 98 healthy controls, and then explored the correlations between the connectivity metrics and clinical symptoms in FD patients. The results demonstrated that FD patients manifested the increased rsFC in seventeen edges among the SCN, decreased small-worldness and local efficiency in SCN, as well as increased nodal efficiency and nodal degree centrality in the anterior thalamus than healthy controls (p < 0.05, false discovery rate corrected). Moreover, the rsFC of the right anterior thalamus-left nucleus accumbens edge was significantly correlated with the NDSI scores (r = 0.255, p = 0.008, uncorrected) and NDLQI scores (r = -0.241, p = 0.013, uncorrected), the nodal efficiency of right anterior thalamus was significantly correlated with NDLQI scores (r = 0.204, p = 0.036, uncorrected) in FD patients. This study indicated the abnormal rsFC pattern, as well as global and nodal topological properties of the SCN, especially the bilateral anterior thalamus in FD patients, which enhanced our understanding of the central pathophysiology of FD and will lay the foundation for the objective diagnosis of FD and the development of new therapies.

RESUMO

Objectives: The aim of the study was to predict the effect of acupuncture for treating functional dyspepsia (FD) using the support vector machine (SVM) techniques based on initial deqi sensations of patients. Methods: This retrospective study involved 90 FD patients who had received four weeks of acupuncture treatment. The support vector classification model was used to distinguish higher responders (patients with Symptom Index of Dyspepsia improvement score ≥ 2) from lower responders (patients with Symptom Index of Dyspepsia improvement score < 2). A support vector regression model was used to predict the change in the Symptom Index of Dyspepsia at the end of acupuncture treatment. Deqi sensations of patients in the first acupuncture treatment of a 20-session acupuncture intervention were defined as features and used to train models. Models were validated by 10-fold cross-validation and evaluated by accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, the area under the receive-operating curve, the coefficient of determination (R 2), and the mean squared error. Results: The two models could predict the efficacy of acupuncture successfully. These models had an accuracy of 0.84 in predicting acupuncture response, and an R 2 of 0.16 in the prediction of symptom improvements, respectively. The presence or absence of deqi sensation, the duration of deqi sensation, distention, and pain were finally selected as significant predicting features. Conclusion: Based on the SVM algorithms and deqi sensation, the current study successfully predicted the acupuncture response as well as clinical symptom improvement in FD patients at the end of treatment. Our prediction models are expected to promote the clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment for FD, reduce medical expenditures, and optimize the allocation of medical resources.

RESUMO

Different acupoints exhibiting similar therapeutic effects are a common phenomenon in acupuncture clinical practice. However, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the similarities and differences in cerebral activities elicited through stimulation of CV12 and ST36, the two most commonly used acupoints, in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, so as to partly explore the mechanism of the different acupoints with similar effects. Thirty-eight eligible functional dyspepsia (FD) patients were randomly assigned into either group A (CV12 group) or group B (ST36 group). Each patient received five acupuncture treatments per week for 4 weeks. The Symptom Index of Dyspepsia (SID), Nepean Dyspepsia Symptom Index (NDSI), and Nepean Dyspepsia Life Quality Index (NDLQI) were used to assess treatment efficacy. Functional MRI (fMRI) scans were performed to detect cerebral activity changes at baseline and at the end of the treatment. The results demonstrated that (1) improvements in NDSI, SID, and NDLQI were found in both group A and group B (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the improvements of the SID, NDSI, and NDLQI scores between group A and group B (p > 0.05); (2) all FD patients showed significantly increased amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) in the left postcentral gyrus after acupuncture treatment, and the changes of ALFF in the left postcentral gyrus were significantly related to the improvements of SID scores (r = 0.358, p = 0.041); and (3) needling at CV12 significantly decreased the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the left postcentral gyrus and angular gyrus, caudate, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and cerebellum, while needling at ST36 significantly increased the rsFC between the left postcentral gyrus with the precuneus, superior frontal gyrus (SFG), and MFG. The results indicated that CV12 and ST36 shared similar therapeutic effects for dyspepsia, with common modulation on the activity of the postcentral gyrus in FD patients. However, the modulatory pattern on the functional connectivity of the postcentral gyrus was different. Namely, stimulation of CV12 primarily involved the postcentral gyrus-reward network, while stimulation of ST36 primarily involved the postcentral gyrus-default mode network circuitry.

RESUMO

Background: Functional and structural alterations in the gray matter have been observed in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, little is known about white matter changes in KOA. Here, we evaluated fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) to investigate potential alterations in the white matter of patients with KOA. Methods: A total of 166 patients with KOA, along with 88 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited and underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were collected and analyzed using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). Statistical significances were determined at p < 0.05 and were corrected by the threshold-free cluster enhancement (TFCE) method. Then, we evaluated potential correlations between FA, MD, AD, RD values and disease duration, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, and visual analog scale (VAS) scores. Results: FA values for the body of corpus callosum, splenium of corpus callosum, bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus, cingulum, bilateral superior corona radiata, and right posterior corona radiata were significantly higher in patients with KOA than in healthy controls (p < 0.05, TFCE corrected). Compared with healthy controls, patients with KOA also had significantly lower MD, AD, and RD values of the genu of corpus callosum, body of corpus callosum, splenium of corpus callosum, corona radiata, right posterior thalamic radiation, superior longitudinal fasciculus, and middle cerebellar peduncle (p < 0.05, TFCE corrected). Negative correlations were detected between WOMAC scores and AD values for the body of the corpus callosum and the splenium of the corpus callosum (p < 0.05, FDR corrected). Conclusion: Patients with KOA exhibited extensive white matter alterations in sensorimotor and pain-related regions. Longitudinal observation studies on the causation between abnormalities in the white matter tracts and KOA is needed in the future.

RESUMO

Acupuncture is an effective therapy for functional dyspepsia (FD). However, the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of FD varies among individuals in clinical practice. This study aimed to reveal the brain response patterns in acupuncture higher response/lower response FD patients. Firstly, we performed a within-group comparison of brain function activity before and after acupuncture treatment in 115 FD patients and analyzed the correlation between brain function activity changes and clinical improvements. Secondly, 115 subjects were divided into the acupuncture higher response group or the lower response group based on the median clinical improvement values. The changes in functional brain activity after acupuncture treatment were investigated in these two groups, respectively. Finally, the identified brain regions associated with the clinical improvements were set as regions of interest (ROI), and the ROI-to-voxel functional connectivity comparisons were also performed in both groups, respectively. The results demonstrated that the functional activities of the left cerebellum inferior, right middle temporal gyrus, and right medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) were increased, and the left Heschl and right middle cingulate cortex were decreased in 115 FD patients after acupuncture treatment. The functional connectivity changes of mPFC were correlated with improving the Nepean Dyspepsia Symptom Index. The significant increase in mPFC functional activity was also found in acupuncture higher response FD patients but not in lower response FD patients. The functional connectivity between the mPFC and default mode network (DMN) was significantly diminished in the higher response group but not in the lower response group. In conclusion, this study suggested that modulating the functional activity of the mPFC and its connectivity to the DMN may be one of the important mechanisms of acupuncture for treating FD with a higher response.

RESUMO

The diagnosis of functional dyspepsia (FD) presently relies on the self-reported symptoms. This study aimed to determine the potential of functional brain network features as biomarkers for the identification of FD patients. Firstly, the functional brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging data were collected from 100 FD patients and 100 healthy subjects, and the functional brain network features were extracted by the independent component analysis. Then, a support vector machine classifier was established based on these functional brain network features to discriminate FD patients from healthy subjects. Features that contributed substantially to the classification were finally identified as the classifying features. The results demonstrated that the classifier performed pretty well in discriminating FD patients. Namely, the accuracy of classification was 0.84 ± 0.03 in cross-validation set and 0.80 ± 0.07 in independent test set, respectively. A total of 15 connections between the subcortical nucleus (the thalamus and caudate) and sensorimotor cortex, parahippocampus, orbitofrontal cortex were finally determined as the classifying features. Furthermore, the results of cross-brain atlas validation showed that these classifying features were quite robust in the identification of FD patients. In summary, the current findings suggested the potential of using machine learning method and functional brain network biomarkers to identify FD patients.

RESUMO

Acupuncture has been widely used as an alternative and complementary therapy for migraine. With the development of neuroimaging techniques, the central mechanism of acupuncture for migraine has gained increasing attention. This review aimed to analyze the study design and main findings of neuroimaging studies of acupuncture for migraine to provide the reference for future research. The original studies were collected and screened in three English databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library) and four Chinese databases (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature database, the Chongqing VIP database, and Wanfang database). As a result, a total of 28 articles were included. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was the most used neuroimaging technique to explore the cerebral activities of acupuncture for migraine. This review manifested that acupuncture could elicit cerebral responses on patients with migraine, different from sham acupuncture. The results indicated that the pain systems, including the medial pain pathway, lateral pain pathway, and descending pain modulatory system, participated in the modulation of the cerebral activities of migraine by acupuncture.
