RESUMO

Erethizon dorsatum papillomavirus 1 (EdPV1) and Erethizon dorsatum papillomavirus 2 (EdPV2) are associated with cutaneous papillomas in North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum). This study defined gross, histopathologic, and molecular characteristics of viral papillomas in 10 North American porcupines submitted to the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center. Investigation for the presence of EdPV1 and EdPV2 DNA via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed in 9 of the 10 (90.0%) porcupines, and all porcupines were investigated for the detection and localization of EdPV1 and EdPV2 E6 and E7 nucleic acid via chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed in 2 porcupines. Papillomas were diagnosed on the muzzle (n = 4), caudal dorsum (n = 1), upper lip (n = 1), chin (n = 1), gingiva (n = 2), and nasal planum (n = 1). Histologically, the lesions consisted of hyperplastic epidermis or epithelium with orthokeratotic keratin, prominent keratohyalin granules, and intranuclear inclusion bodies. PCR identified EdPV1 in 6 of 9 samples and EdPV2 in the remaining 3 samples. NGS resulted in 100% genome coverage of EdPV1 and 76.20% genome coverage of EdPV2 compared with GenBank reference sequences, with 99.8% sequence identity to the complete EdPV2 L1 gene of a novel subtype recently identified in France. Hybridization patterns in 9 of the 10 (90.0%) porcupines were characterized by strong nuclear signals in the superficial epidermis, with strong nuclear and punctate cytoplasmic signals in the stratum spinosum and basale. In one animal, CISH suggested dual EdPV1 and EdPV2 infection.

RESUMO

This case of everted third eyelid cartilage in a goat demonstrates that everted cartilage occurs in animals other than domestic dogs and cats. Everted cartilage in the goat can be treated successfully with surgical excision of the abnormally bent cartilage.

PURPOSE: To quantify the relative motion between the lunate and triquetrum during functional wrist movements and to examine the impact of wrist laxity on triquetral motion. METHODS: A digital database of wrist bone anatomy and carpal kinematics for 10 healthy volunteers in 10 different positions was used to study triquetral kinematics. The orientation of radiotriquetral (RT) and radiolunate rotation axes was compared during a variety of functional wrist movements, including radioulnar deviation (RUD) and flexion-extension (FE), and during a hammering task. The motion of the triquetrum relative to the radius during wrist RUD was compared with passive FE range of motion measurements (used as a surrogate measure for wrist laxity). RESULTS: The difference in the orientation of the radiolunate and RT rotation axes was less than 20° during most of the motions studied, except for radial deviation and for the first stage of the hammering task. During wrist RUD, the orientation of the RT rotation axis varied as a function of passive FE wrist range of motion. CONCLUSIONS: The suggestion that the lunate and triquetrum move together as an intercalated segment may be an oversimplification. We observed synchronous movement during some motions, but as the wrist entered RUD, the lunate and triquetrum no longer moved synchronously. These findings challenge the assumptions behind models describing the mechanical function of the carpals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Individual-specific differences in the amount of relative motion between the triquetrum and lunate may contribute to the variability in outcomes following lunotriquetral arthrodesis. Variation in triquetral motion patterns may also have an impact on the ability of the triquetrum to extend the lunate, affecting the development of carpal instability.

The tentacled snake (Erpeton tentaculatum) is a viviparous aquatic snake that is a desirable species to exhibit in zoological collections because of its unique appearance and feeding strategies. Despite its presence in zoo collections over the past 50 yr, a comprehensive review of mortality and morbidity in the species has not been published. This study retrospectively reviewed 125 pathology reports from tentacled snakes in a multi-institution zoological collection in New York (The Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx and Central Park zoos) between 1966 and 2017. Just over half of the deaths were due to infectious disease (n = 67; 53.6%), and of these, over half (n = 40; 59.7%) were due to fungal dermatitis. Fungal histomorphology was consistent with Paranannizziopsis spp. in most cases. Death due to bacterial infection was also relatively common (n = 21; 16.8%), and one-third had intralesional bacilli consistent with Mycobacterium spp. (n = 7; 5.6%). The most common comorbidities included gastrointestinal parasitism (n = 44; 35.2%), renal pathology (n = 31; 24.8%), and lipid accumulation of hepatocytes (n = 13; 10.4%). This retrospective review suggests that managing infectious diseases plays a role in the long-term care and survival of captive tentacled snakes.

RESUMO

We identified a novel herpesvirus in a captive juvenile white stork (Ciconia ciconia) that experienced progressive weight loss followed by death. Histologic findings included severe splenic and hepatic necrosis, and intranuclear inclusion bodies in hepatocytes and unidentified splenic cells. The virus was amplified, sequenced, and subsequently accessioned as Ciconiid alphaherpesvirus 1. Phylogenetic analysis was performed and revealed that this virus is more closely related to mammalian herpesviruses than those within the genus Mardivirus. Additional sequence of viruses in this area may elucidate the ancestral virus that jumped from reptilian to mammalian hosts.

PURPOSE: To determine the location of the rotation axis between the scaphoid and the lunate (SL-axis) during wrist flexion-extension (FE) and radial-ulnar deviation (RUD). METHODS: An established and publicly available digital database of wrist bone anatomy and carpal kinematics of 30 healthy volunteers (15 males and 15 females) in up to 8 different positions was used to study the SL-axis. Using the combinations of positions from wrist FE and RUD, the helical axis of motion of the scaphoid relative to the lunate was calculated for each trial in an anatomical coordinate system embedded in the lunate. The differences in location and orientation between each individual axis and the average axis were used to quantify variation in axis orientation. Variation in the axis location was computed as the distance from the closest point on the rotation axis to the centroid of the lunate. RESULTS: The variation in axis orientation of the rotation axis for wrist FE and RUD were 84.3° and 83.5°, respectively. The mean distances of each rotation axis from the centroid of the lunate for FE and RUD were 5.7 ± 3.2 mm, and 5.0 ± 3.6 mm, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the evaluation of this dataset, we demonstrated that the rotation axis of the scaphoid relative to the lunate is highly variable across subjects and positions during both FE and RUD motions. The range of locations and variation in axis orientations in this data set of 30 wrists shows that there is very likely no single location for the SL-axis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Scapholunate interosseous ligament reconstruction methods focused on re-creating a standard SL-axis may not restore what is more likely to be a variable anatomical axis and normal kinematics of the scaphoid and lunate.
