RESUMO

Abstract: Psoriasis is a immune-mediated, chronic, inflammatory skin dis-ease. In HIV positive (HIV+) patients we usually observe more serious clinical features and recalcitrant course. Furthermore, therapeutic man-agement of HIV+ patient is complex and requires collaboration with the infectious disease specialist. We report the case of a patient affected by severe psoriasis who contracted HIV infection during biological therapy and, subsequently, succesfully treated with ixekizumab.

RESUMO

Abstract: Blue nevi are a heterogeneous group of lesions that can display a variety of different clinicopathological characteristics. Although attempts are made to classify each lesion into defined subtypes, there can be overlap between the subtypes. The clinical , dermoscopic and histolopathologic features of a case of proliferative nodule arising within blue nevus is discussed. Running title: Blue nevi are an heterogeneous group of melanocytic lesions blue tinctorial properties. Proliferative nodules are rare benign lesions often present at birth as a component of a large congenital melanocytic nevi, congenital or acquired nevi. We first report a case of proliferative nodule arising within blue nevus.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the composition of the shells of two marine bivalves Mytilus galloprovincialis and Corbula gibba from four samples collected from the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Southern Italy). Bivalve shells are composed of 95-99.9% calcium carbonate (CaCO3), while the remaining portion is constituted by organic matrix, which in some cases may incorporate pollutants from the surrounding environment. Recognizing the role of bivalves in the carbon biogeochemical cycle and their economic importance for aquaculture, we aimed to develop a methodology for shells powder samples preparation and analysis. The main objective of the study was to demonstrate the feasibility of Fourier Transform Infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy to perform a fast sample analysis in order to detect the possible presence of pollutants in the shells. The results revealed an unbiased differentiation between the shell compositions of the two bivalve selected species. Moreover, the spectra interpretation indicated that C. gibba specimens recorded a shell matrix contaminated by organic pollutants present in the surrounding environment. In conclusion, the described methodology including sample preparation tailored for photoacoustical investigations demonstrated to be a tool for the characterization of bivalve shells contamination enhancing environmental studies of polluted marine areas.•Bivalve species were collected from sampling stations located in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Southern Italy).•Samples preparation stages include: sonication, grinding and fractioning by sieving.•FT-IR PAS spectral region of interest is in the mid-infrared between 4000 and 400 cm-1.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is a public health crisis of global proportion. In psoriatic patients treated with biologic agents, evidence is not yet available on susceptibility to infection with the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, and data about the perception of COVID-19 and its impact on these patients are lacking. AIMS: The aim of this observational, spontaneous study was the evaluation of the impact of anti COVID-19 measures in "fragile population" such as patients with a chronic inflammatory disease. Thus, we evaluated the impact of perceived risk on quality of life of patients with moderate to severe psoriasis, in our outpatient clinic, and how their perceptions changed before and after the adoption of Covid-19 emergency measures following the Italian Ministerial Decree in March 9, 2020. METHODS: Using a series of questions, our study surveyed adult patients with moderate to severe psoriasis receiving treatment with biologic agents (n = 591), before and after the adoption of COVID-19 emergency measures. RESULTS: Most patients (97%) had been sufficiently informed by healthcare staff about COVID-19 spread. A significant change was observed in social activity reduction before and after the adoption of the measures (18% vs. 90% of patients; P < 0.0001). Similarly, patients were more likely to suspend ongoing therapy after the measures were adopted than before (87% vs. 34% of patients; P < 0.0001). Following the measures, older patients were significantly more inclined to suspend therapy and reduce social activities than younger patients. CONCLUSIONS: Government COVID-19 emergency measures further curtailed already reduced social activities in psoriatic patients, and led to a greater inclination to suspend biologic therapy, more so in older patients, despite there being no evidence to support this suspension. These vulnerable patients may need support from clinicians in order to maintain treatment adherence.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by erythemato-squamous lesions with a chronic relapsing course. The desease clinical activity (PASI) and the patient's quality of life (DLQI) are the main elements to assess for setting up a correct therapeutic management. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the management of the patient with moderate-severe psoriasis in therapy with biological drugs and to establish the difference in the achievement of PASI 90 and DLQI 0-1 between a group of patients treated with only biological drugs and a group of patients receiving biologic therapy in combination with a topical ointment. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational real-life study enrolling 60 patients with moderate to severe psoriasis and divided in two groups: Group A patients treated with biological drugs, Group B patiens treated with biological drugs in association with an ointment composed of betamethasone, salicylic acid and ammonium sulpho-ichtyolate, applied 2 times a day. PASI and DLQI were evaluated at study beginning (T0) for both study groups, after 12 weeks (T3) for sample in therapy with biological drugs and after 24 weeks (T6) for sample in co-medication therapy. RESULTS: The two-way ANOVA method was used to evaluate the standard deviations (SD): at T3 and T6 Group B obtained a significant PASI reduction and improvement of DLQI (* p value <0.05) compared to Group A. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shown that the patients treated with biologics in co-medication with topical therapy reached a significantly higher PASI and DQLI compared with those treated with only biologics. Furthermore we observed that the association with topical oinment showed more efficacy in the treatment of areas such as palm-plantar region, that is often difficult-to-treat region, even for biologic drugs.

RESUMO

The Hummers' method for graphite oxide (GO) preparation has been applied to graphite nanoplatelets, in order to achieve higher reaction yield and faster kinetics. Aqueous GO solutions have been used to produce uniform GO films on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate, generating graphene patterns in a controlled way (widths of a few tens of microns). The reduction of GO deposited on the polymeric substrate has been performed by using a Nd:YVO4 continuous-wave frequency-duplicated laser. Spectroscopic and diffractometric characterizations (FT-IR, visible-NIR, Raman, XPS, and XRD) have shown that the reduction process induced by the laser annealing technique is mainly due to dehydration of the GO layers. It has been obtained by means of a suitable laser optical apparatus, a controlled reduction of GO without damaging the substrate, and precise writing of micro-tracks that can be used as electrically and thermally conductive patterns.

RESUMO

We report on the patterning and reduction of graphene-oxide films by holographic lithography. Light reduction can be used to engineer low-cost graphene-based devices by performing a local conversion of insulating oxide into the conductive graphene. In this work, computer-generated holograms have been exploited to realize complex graphene patterns in a single shot, different from serial laser writing or mask-based photolithographic processes. The technique has been further improved by achieving speckle noise reduction: submicron and diffraction-limited features have been obtained. In addition we have also demonstrated that the gray-scale lithography capability can be used to obtain different reduction levels in a single exposure.

The recombination dynamics of defect states in zinc oxide nanowires has been studied by developing a general expression for time-resolved photoluminescence intensity based on a second-order approximation for the radiative and non-radiative recombination rates. The model allows us to determine the parameters that characterize the recombination from deep defect states (defect concentration, unimolecular lifetime and bimolecular coefficient) through multi-fitting analysis of time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. Analyses conducted on zinc oxide nanowires gave deep state concentrations of the order of 10(18) cm(-3) and unimolecular lifetimes and bimolecular recombination coefficient comparable to those typical of interband recombination in direct gap semiconductors. The consistency of a 'two-channel decay' model (double exponential decay) has been tested by means of a similar analysis procedure. The results suggest that double exponential fitting of time-resolved photoluminescence data of zinc oxide nanowires may be just a mere phenomenological tool which does not reflect the real recombination dynamics of the visible emission band.

We have chemically modified the frustules of the marine diatom Coscinodiscus concinnus Wm. Smith to properly bind a highly selective bioprobe such as an antibody. By measuring the changes in the photoluminescence emission of diatoms frustules, we have monitored the molecular recognition event between the antibody and its ligand: the dissociation constant estimated is of the same order of that measured by standard Biacore. The nanostructured silica frustules, a low-cost and natural available material, have shown high sensitivity, equal to 1.2+/-0.2 nm microM(-1), and a detection limit of 100 nM, and thus are quite ideal candidates for lab-on-particle applications.

We use near-field optical microscopy to investigate the early state formation of photo-induced topographical structures on the free surface of azobenzene-containing polymers. The near-field technique is employed to monitor in real time the mass migration during the embossing of the surface of 50/50 copolymer films of polymethacrylate and polymethacrylate containing 3-methyl-4'-pentyloxy-azobenzene units. The dynamic of surface relief formation induced by light have been investigated as a function of the sample temperature. Furthermore, a formula derived from Navier-Stokes equations for classical laminar flow has been used to fit the mass displacement data during the embossing process. Excellent agreements between the experimental data and the fitting formula have been found for all the temperature considered.

RESUMO

Tin dioxide (SnO(2)) nanowires exhibit a strong visible photoluminescence that is not observed in bulk crystalline SnO(2). To explain such effect, oxygen vacancies are often invoked without clarifying if they represent the direct origin of luminescence or if their presence triggers other radiative processes. Here we report an investigation of the nature of the visible light emission in SnO(2) nanowires, showing that both experimental and theoretical ab initio analyses support the first hypothesis. On the basis of photoluminescence quenching analysis and of first-principles calculations we show that surface bridging oxygen vacancies in SnO(2) lead to formation of occupied and empty surface bands whose transition energies are in strong agreement with luminescence features and whose luminescence activity can be switched off by surface adsorption of oxidizing molecules. Finally, we discuss how such findings may explain the decoupling between "electrical-active" and "optical-active" states in SnO(2) gas nanosensors [G. Faglia et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 86, 011923 (2005)].

High-quality amorphous Silicon Nitride (a-Si(1-x)N(x):H) Fabry-Pérot microcavities can show resonant surface Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) effect. We consider two different layouts of planar microcavities with almost identical linear reflectance and show how the structure geometry can strongly affect SHG yield. In particular, a difference of more than one order of magnitude in the SHG intensity is observed when the fundamental beam is tuned at the cavity resonance frequency. We explain this finding on the basis of a theoretical model taking into account the spatial distribution of the electric fields of the pump and harmonic frequencies inside the structure. A satisfactory matching of experimental data with the theoretical model is obtained by considering the source of second-order nonlinearity as limited to surface contributions.
