ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Eucalyptus genus has been used for a very long time in conventional treatment as an anti-ulcer remedy. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aimed to explore the gastroprotective potential of 7-O-methyl aromadendrin (7-OMA), and sakuranetin (SKN) in comparison with omeprazole. The study tackled the contribution of their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiapoptotic capabilities to their anti-gastric ulcer effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model in rats was adopted and the consequences were confirmed by a molecular docking study. RESULTS: The oral pretreatment of rats 1 h before ethanol using omeprazole (20 mg/kg) or 7-OMA (20 or 40 mg/kg) or SKN (20 or 40 mg/kg) exhibited gastroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties to different extents. These amendments witnessed as restorations in the stomach histological architecture in H and E-stained sections, mucus content in periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stained sections with increased cellular proliferation, as demonstrated by increased immunohistochemical staining of PCNA, and increments in stomach COX-1 activity and eNOS. The highest dose of SKN showed the best corrections to reach 4.8, 1.8, and 2.1 folds increase in PAS, COX-1 and eNOS, respectively as compared to the untreated ethanol-induced gastric ulcer group; effects that were comparable to that of omeprazole. Moreover, reductions in COX-2 activity, and the protein expression of NF-κB, IL-6, TNF-α and NOx, in addition to the gene expression of inducible iNOS were also noted. Moreover, the antioxidant and antiapoptotic capabilities of omeprazole, 7-OMA, and SKN were perceived. SKN (40 mg/kg) succeeded to show the unsurpassed results to reach 293.6%, 237.1%, 274.7%, 248.2%, and 175.4% in total and reduced GSH, catalase, SOD, and Bcl2, respectively, as well as 50.0%, 46.8%, and 52.1 % in oxidized GSSG, TBARS and caspase-3, respectively. The gastroprotective potential of the tested compounds can be assigned to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties.7-OMA and SKN were studied using molecular docking into the binding sites of the most significant inflammatory targets, including COX-2, TNF-α, iNOS, and NF-κB. Pharmacokinetic and physicochemical parameters in silico were appropriate. CONCLUSION: The prophylactic use of 7-OMA and SKN could be considered as an add-on to recurrent gastric ulcers and might influence its therapeutic approaches.

This paper presents a design of a X-band circulator-isolator for handling high-peak-power applications. The device consists of two cascade-connected ferrite circulators, with one dedicated to transmission and the other to small-signal reception coupled with high-power signal isolation. To improve the power capacity, a layer of poly-tetra fluoroethylene (PTFE) film is placed above and below the circulator's and the isolator's center conductors. Measurement results show that the device is capable of withstanding a peak power of 7000 W, with an insertion loss of <0.3 dB at the transmitting port. Similarly, it sustains a peak power of 6000 W with an insertion loss of <0.5 dB at the reception port. Moreover, the proposed design achieved isolation between the transmitting and receiving ends of >20 dB with a VSWR < 1.2 at each port. Thermal analysis shows that the maximum relative ambient temperature rise is 15.11 ∘C. These findings show that the proposed device achieves low-loss transmission of high-peak-power signals in the transmit channel and reverse isolation of high-peak-power signals in the receive channel.

PURPOSE: Respiratory muscle function is compromised in children recovering from chest wall burns, which potentially leads to more impact on exercise capacity and quality of life. This study investigates the effects of an inspiratory muscle training intervention accompanied with a pulmonary rehabilitation program on respiratory muscle strength, lung function, functional capacity, and quality of life in chest burned children. METHODS: Forty children with burns, aged from 10 to 18 years old and total body surface area of 30% to 50%, were randomly allocated to the inspiratory muscle training group (IMT- G: n = 20) or control group (CG: n = 20). They received IMT plus pulmonary rehabilitation or pulmonary rehabilitation with sham IMT, respectively for eight weeks. The outcomes were the respiratory muscle strength measured by maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP); lung functions (FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC ratio); functional capacity as well as Pediatric Quality of Life to measure physical and psychosocial functioning. outcome measures were assessed at before and after intervention (after eight weeks). RESULTS: Based on the pre-intervention assessments, we found no significant difference between both groups (p > 0.05). Significant post-intervention differences were reported between both groups in MIP (P = .003), MEP (P = .017), FVC (P = .001), FEV1 (P = .007), FEV1/FVC ratio (P = .028), functional capacity (P = .003), physical domain of QoL (P = .006) and psychological domain of QoL (P = .002) in favor of the IMT group. CONCLUSIONS: Eight weeks of inspiratory muscle training combined with pulmonary rehabilitation program improved children with chest burns' respiratory muscles strength, lung functions, functional capacity, and quality of life. Inspiratory muscle training may be employed in burn rehabilitation programs. It is a safe and effective therapy in chest burned children.

This study investigates the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic characteristics of two prominent blood-borne pathogens, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and Plasmodium spp., in common quails (Coturnix coturnix) sampled from both wild (N = 236) and farmed (N = 197) populations across four districts (Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Lahore, and Multan) in Punjab, Pakistan, during the hunting seasons from 2021 to 2023. Additionally, the impact of these pathogens on the complete blood count (CBC) of the hosts is examined. Out of 433 quails tested, 25 (5.8%) exhibited amplification of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) gene for T. gondii, while 15 (3.5%) showed amplification of the Cytochrome b gene for Plasmodium spp. A risk factor analysis indicated that the prevalence of both pathogens was not confined to specific sampling sites or bird sexes (P > 0.05). District-wise analysis highlighted that hens were more susceptible to both T. gondii and Plasmodium spp. infections than cocks. Wild quails exhibited a higher susceptibility to T. gondii compared to farmed birds. Significant CBC variations were recorded in infected birds as compared to uninfected ones. BLAST analysis of generated sequences has confirmed the identity of recovered PCR amplicons as T. gondii and Plasmodium relictum. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Pakistani isolates clustered with those reported from various countries globally. This study provides the first documentation of T. gondii and Plasmodium sp. infections in Pakistani quails, underscoring the need for detailed investigations across different regions to enhance our understanding of infection rates and the zoonotic potential of these parasites.

Background: Hemophilic arthropathy is caused by recurrent intra-articular bleeding, most commonly in the knee joints. In terms of physical impact, this arthropathy causes significant disability and hampers the physical activity and functionality of he affected individuals. Objective: This study intended to examine the effect of a physical rehabilitation program incorporating Kinect-based virtual reality (KBVR) on gait characteristics, functional ability, and physical activity level in adolescents diagnosed with hemophilic knee arthropathy (HKA). Materials and methods: In a randomized clinical trial, 56 boys, aged 10-14 years, with moderate HKA, were randomly allocated into two groups. The control group (n = 28) received conventional physical therapy (CPT), while the KBVR group (n = 52) received a 30-min KBVR exercise program in addition to the CPT. Training was conducted three times/week for 12 successive weeks. Gait characteristics (step length, cadence, velocity, peak knee extension moment during stance, and knee flexion amplitude during swing) were assessed using a gait analysis system, the functional ability was assessed through the 6-min walk test, and physical activity level assessed by the Adolescents' Physical Activity Questionnaire on the pre- and post-treatment occasions. Results: The KBVR group achieved more favorable changes in the gait characteristics [step length (P = 0.015), cadence (P = 0.004), velocity (P = 0.024), peak knee extension moment during stance (P = 0.018), and Knee flexion amplitude during swing (P = 0.032)], functional capacity (P = 0.002), and physical activity levels (P = 0.007) compared to the control group. Conclusion: The use of KBVR exercises within a rehabilitation program is a potentially effective therapeutic option for the total care of adolescents with HKA.

Objective: Turf toe is a common sports injury that may affect mobility and functional ability. For complete recovery, rehabilitation modalities are required to overcome these issues. This study investigated whether kinesio taping (KT) would reduce pain, improve gait performance, and enhance the functional capacity of turf toe patients undergoing physical therapy. Methods: sixty patients with grade II turf toe (age; 25-30 years) assigned randomly into three treatment groups; KT applied alongside an exercise program conducted three times/week for 12 successive weeks. (KT group; n = 20), placebo taping plus exercise (Placebo group; n = 20), or exercise only (Control group; n = 20). Pain, gait parameters, and functional ability assessed using VAS, 3D gait analysis, and 6MWT respectively pre- and post-treatment. Results: There was a significant post-treatment decrease in VAS score in the KT group lower than the control or placebo group and a significant increase in 6MWT distance in the KT group higher than the control or placebo group (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a significant post-treatment increase in step length, stride length, cadence and velocity of KT group higher than control and placebo group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in gait parameters between control and placebo groups post treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The findings of the study demonstrated that KT is a useful complementary modality to exercise in patients with turf toe, as it may result in more favorable improvements to pain, gait characteristics, and functional abilities. Further studies should be conducted to assess the long-term effects, different KT application methods, and tailored treatment protocols on turf toe.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans when handling or consuming improperly cooked fish meat. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on V. parahaemolyticus isolates. Different heat treatment methods are used to determine the best methods for controlling V. parahaemolyticus, isolated from fish meat, which include microwave, low-temperature long-time, and high-temperature short-time methods. The V. parahaemolyticus isolates significantly declined in bacteria count when they were kept at 4°C, and 25°C for a long time, and the V. parahaemolyticus isolates significantly declined in bacteria count manner when they were kept at -20°C for a long time. The high temperature and long-time exposure at 75°C/25 minutes by moist heat, 87°C/5 minutes by dry heat, and 70°C/20 minutes by frying heat were enough to kill V. parahaemolyticus isolates. This work can be useful to decrease the hazards of infections related to V. parahaemolyticus and reduce the causes of fishborne pathogens.

Background and objective Older adults are susceptible to various disorders, including depression. Depression manifests as a disorder characterized by a persistent depressed mood, feelings of sadness and loneliness, sleep disturbances, and loss of interest lasting for two weeks or more. This condition can significantly affect the quality of life for older adults, resulting in adverse outcomes that have a negative impact on their overall well-being. In this study, our objective was to assess the prevalence of depression and identify associated risk factors among individuals aged 60 years and above who attended Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCCs) in Jizan City. Methodology We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study among older people attending PHCCs in Jizan City between May and December 2022. In this study, we interviewed 300 participants using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess depression. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) was used for data entry and analysis. We used the chi-square test and binary logistic regression model to detect the associations and predictors of depression among older adults. Results One-third of the study participants experienced depression, with 49 (16%) exhibiting mild depression, 33 (11%) reporting moderate depression, and 17 (6%) individuals indicating moderately severe depression. Depression was more common among females (158, 52.7%) than males (142, 47.3%). The predictors of depression among the study participants were the dependency to perform daily tasks and abnormal sleep duration. Conclusions Depression is a prevalent health problem among older people in Jizan City, particularly among females, those who are divorced or widowed, individuals dependent on others for daily tasks, and those with abnormal sleep duration. We conclude that we need more research on older adults to assess their mental problems and fill in the literature gap.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Addiction is a chronic disorder that comes with emotional and financial burdens. Several neurobiological factors were correlated to opiate-use disorder which is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF has been found to be involved in long-term potentiation of synaptic strength, a mechanism that is thought to motivate both natural adaption mechanisms as well as the development of addictive behavior. In this study, we aimed to address the relation between BDNF serum level and heroin craving and the effect of duration of abstinence on them. METHODS: A case study was conducted on 80 subjects from Kasr Al-Ainy Psychiatry and Addiction Treatment Hospital with a history of heroin dependence and were divided into two groups: Group A had 40 active heroin-dependent subjects while in Group B, 40 subjects with 1-year heroin abstinence. Severity of addiction was assessed by the addiction severity index, heroin craving was measured by Brief Substance Craving Scale and serum BDNF level was investigated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The findings show that active heroin users had significantly higher serum BDNF which is associated with high heroin craving in comparison to the abstinent group. CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: This study revealed a significant positive correlation between serum BDNF levels and craving in active heroin users versus 1-year abstinent subjects. It is the first study to address the relationship between craving and serum BDNF level in a 1-year abstinent participants. These findings help to determine the brain alterations associated with illness and recovery in heroin dependence.

In the present study, spiro compounds are shown to have distinctive characteristics because of their interesting conformations and their structural impacts on biological systems. A new family of functionalized spiro pyrrolo[3,4-d]pyrimidines is prepared via the one-pot condensation reaction of amino cyclohexane derivatives with benzaldehyde to prepare fused azaspiroundecanedione and azaspirodecenone/thione derivatives. A series of synthesized spiro compounds were scanned against DPPH and evaluated for their ability to inhibit COX-1 and COX-2. All compounds exhibit significant antiinflammatory activity, and they inhibited both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes with a selectivity index higher than celecoxib as a reference drug. The most powerful and selective COX-2 inhibitor compounds were 11 and 6, with selectivity indices of 175 and 129.21 in comparison to 31.52 of the standard celecoxib. However, candidate 14 showed a very promising antiinflammatory activity with an IC50 of 6.00, while celecoxib had an IC50 of 14.50. Our findings are promising in the area of medicinal chemistry for further optimization of the newly designed and synthesized compounds regarding the discussed structure-activity relationship study (SAR), in order to obtain a superior antioxidant lead compound in the near future. All chemical structures of the novel synthesized candidates were unequivocally elucidated and confirmed utilizing spectroscopic and elemental investigations.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), an emerging vector-borne ailment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan, exhibits diverse spread patterns and outbreaks. METHODS: To comprehend its epidemiology and identify parasite species, we conducted an active survey on suspected CL cases (n=8845) in KPK. RESULTS: Microscopy and internal transcribed spacer-1 PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) molecular techniques detected Leishmania spp. in blood samples. Phylogenetic analysis gauged genetic affinities with other areas. District Bannu displayed the highest CL impact (14.58%), while Swat had the lowest impact (4.33%) among cases. Annual blood examination rate, parasite incidence and slide positivity rate were 4.96 per 1000 people, 0.0233 and 0.047%, respectively. CL infections were prevalent in 1- to 20-y-olds, with males (57.17%) more vulnerable than females (42.82%). Single lesions occurred in 43.73% of patients, while 31.2% people had two lesions, 17.31% had three lesions and 7.74% had more than three lesions. Most had sand-fly exposure but lacked preventive measures like repellents and bed nets. Leishmania tropica was confirmed via RFLP analysis in amplified samples. Phylogenetic analysis unveiled genetic parallels between L. tropica of KPK and isolates from China, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Syria and Morocco. CONCLUSIONS: Urgent comprehensive control measures are imperative. Early detection, targeted interventions and raising awareness of CL and sand-fly vectors are vital for reducing the disease's impact. International collaboration and monitoring are crucial to tackle Leishmania spp.'s genetic diversity and curtail its cross-border spread.

The present work reported the synthesis of novel benzopyrimido[4,5-d]azoninone analogs using a biosynthesized Ag-TiO2 core/shell magnetic nanocatalyst. Accordingly, three-component one-pot reactions of benzoazonine-dione with thiourea and aryl aldehyde derivatives under nanocatalytic and optimized conditions afforded reasonable to brilliant yields of the target products (57-91%). The nanocatalyst was synthesized by a facile method using turmeric ethanol extract as a reducing and chelating agent. The synthesized nanocatalyst was verified by FT-IR, XRD, zeta potential, EDX, SEM, and TEM. The nanocatalyst presented remarkable catalytic activity for the synthesis of the target products. The procedure provided biosynthesis of the nanocatalyst, accessible reagents, high yields and rates of the reactions, nanocatalyst recyclability, and ease of product isolation and purification. The novel products were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, mass spectra, and 2D NMR analysis (COSY, NOESY, HMQC & HSQC) spectral analyses. The antioxidant activity was assessed by DPPH and phosphomolybdate assays, in which the compounds exhibited excellent potency. Overall, this approach could be used to develop new and sustainable methods for the synthesis of antioxidants and other biologically active molecules.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of telerehabilitation training on exercise capacity, lung function, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in comparison to no rehabilitation for post-COVID-19 symptoms in adult females. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial of 48 females after mild to moderate COVID-19 survival were equally and randomly assigned to one of two groups: intervention group or control group. Three sessions per week for 6 weeks of a telerehabilitation program provided via a smartphone to the intervention group. Spirometry was used to quantify lung function, a 6-minute walk test (6MWT) measured in meters to measure exercise capacity, and the Short Form Health Survey-36 was used to assess HRQOL. RESULTS: After treatment, there was no statistically significant difference in forced vital capacity (FVC) or forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) between groups (p>0.05), but the 6MWT of the intervention group increased significantly more than that of the control group (p=0.001). The percent of change in 6MWT for the intervention group and control group was 14.22% and 4.21%, respectively. After therapy, the intervention group's HRQOL significantly improved when compared to the control group's (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: This study showed that a telerehabilitation programs improved exercise capacity and HRQOL in young females post-COVID-19 compared to no rehabilitation.

This study utilized a simple hydrothermal technique to prepare pure BiVO4 and tightly bound BiVO4/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposite materials. The surfactant was employed to control the growth, size, and assembly of BiVO4 and the nanocomposite. Various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), photoluminescence (PL), Raman, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were utilized to analyze and characterize BiVO4 and the BiVO4/MWCNTs nanocomposite. Through XRD analysis, it was found that the carbon nanotubes were effectively embedded within the lattice of BiVO4 without generating any separate impurity phase and had no influence on the BiVO4 monoclinic structure. TEM images confirmed the presence of MWCNTs within BiVO4. Furthermore, adding MWCNTs in the BiVO4/MWCNTs nanocomposite resulted in an effective charge transfer transition and improved carrier separation, as evidenced by PL analysis. The introduction of MWCNTs also led to a significant reduction in the optical band gap due to quantum effects. Finally, the antibacterial activity of pure BiVO4 and the BiVO4/MWCNTs nanocomposite was assessed by exposing Proteus mirabilis and Streptococcus mutans to these materials. Biofilm inhibition and antibiofilm activity were measured using a crystal violet assay and a FilmTracer LIVE/DEAD Biofilm Viability Kit. The results demonstrated that pure BiVO4 and BiVO4/MWCNTs effectively inhibited biofilm formation. In conclusion, both pure BiVO4 and BiVO4/MWCNTs are promising materials for inhibiting the bacterial biofilm during bacterial infections.

Unplanned extubations (UE) frequently occur in critical care units. These events are precipitated by many risk factors and are associated with adverse outcomes for patients. We reviewed the current literature to examine factors related to UE and presented the analysis of 41 articles critical to the topic. Our review has identified specific risk factors that we discuss in this review, such as sedation strategies, physical restraints, endotracheal tube position, and specific nursing care aspects associated with an increased incidence of UE. We recommend interventions to reduce the risk of UE. However, we recommend that bundled rather than a single intervention is likely to yield higher success, given the heterogeneity of factors contributing to increasing the risk of UE.

In optical sensing applications such as pipeline monitoring and intrusion detection systems, accurate localization of the event is crucial for timely and effective response. This paper experimentally demonstrates multievent localization for long perimeter monitoring using a Sagnac interferometer loop sensor and machine learning techniques. The proposed method considers the multievent localization problem as a multilabel multiclassification problem by dividing the optical fiber into 250 segments. A deep neural network (DNN) model is used to predict the likelihood of event occurrence in each segment and accurately locate the events. The sensing loop comprises 106.245 km of single-mode fiber, equivalent to ∼50 km of effective sensing distance. The training dataset is constructed in simulation using VPItransmissionMaker, and the proposed machine learning model's complexity is reduced by using discrete cosine transform (DCT). The designed DNN is tested for event localization in both simulation and experiment. The simulation results show that the proposed model achieves an accuracy of 99% in predicting the location of one event within one segment error, an accuracy of 95% in predicting the location of one event out of the two within one segment error, and an accuracy of 78% in predicting the location of the two events within one segment error. The experimental results validate the simulation ones, demonstrating the proposed model's effectiveness in accurately localizing events with high precision. In addition, the paper includes a discussion on extending the proposed model to sense more than two events simultaneously.

Carcass characteristics, product quality, and the conversion of feed into meat with higher performance and feasibility are important determinants of the profitability and sustainability of any poultry enterprise. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential effect of Rumex nervosus leaf powder (RNLP) on carcass composition, small intestine dimensions, breast color quality, and economic feasibility of Ross broiler chickens. A total of 122 broilers were randomly distributed evenly among 4 treatments (0, 1, 3, and 5 g RNLP/ kg diet, n = 5 replicates per treatment, with 6 broilers per replicate: 3 ♀ and 3 ♂). Performance and economic data were collected in each replicate during the experiment. One male bird from each replication was examined for other criteria on d 34. Results showed that broilers fed 3 g of RNLP had a higher eviscerated carcass weight and dressing percentage (P < 0.05) than the control. The RNLP-fed broilers had higher weights and thicknesses in the duodenum and jejunum of up to 5 g and in the ileum and overall small intestine of up to 3 g. Broilers fed the lowest levels of RNLP had the highest revenue and net gain and the lowest cost-benefit ratio compared with those fed the highest levels of RNLP. The results indicate that the addition of RNLP has a positive effect on carcass processing, the intestinal measurements, and profitability ratios of the broilers. The 1 g RNLP/kg feed is the recommended dose to increase productivity and economic profitability ratios per kilogram of meat.

BACKGROUND: Using natural zeolites as a food additive in poultry diets offers an intriguing perspective. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of zeolite addition and particle size on broiler performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, moisture of excreta and litter, and intestinal measurements during 35 days. METHODS: A total of 560 1-day-old female Ross-308 broilers were divided into five treatment levels (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 g zeolite/kg diet) (n = 16 replicates/treatment, n = 8 replicates /particle size of each treatment). Performance was calculated weekly. Carcass characteristics, meat quality, small intestine (SI) measurements, litter pH, and moisture content were determined on day 35. RESULTS: Litter pH, breast redness, cooking loss, chewiness, total weight, and SI length were all affected by zeolite treatments (p < 0.05). Particle size had an impact on the gastric pH and texture analysis. Their interaction had an effect on color redness, litter pH, and cooking loss. Performance was unaffected by either the main or interaction effects. CONCLUSION: Zeolite as a feed additive may be useful in broiler diets, particularly large particles. The performance and production efficiency factor improved numerically (p > 0.05) with increasing zeolite doses up to 10 g zeolite/kg diet.
