RESUMO

AIM: This study explored whether early-life factors, such as rhinovirus-induced wheeze and allergic sensitisation, were related to asthma at 11 years of age. METHODS: We focused on 107 children aged 6-48 months, who attended the paediatric emergency department at Astrid Lindgren's Children's Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, with acute wheeze in 2008-2012. They also attended follow-up visits at 11 years of age and were compared with 46 age-matched healthy controls. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated with logistic regression. RESULTS: We found that 62.6% of the acute wheeze cases had asthma at 11 years of age. Rhinoviruses at inclusion were the only common airway viruses associated with an increased asthma risk (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.02-5.6). Other increased risks were parental heredity for asthma and/or allergies (adjusted OR 3.4, 95% CI 1.1-9.9) and allergic sensitisation at 2 years of age (adjusted OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.02-8.7). The highest prevalence of asthma was when children had both rhinovirus-induced wheeze at inclusion and allergic sensitisation at 7 years of age. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of hereditary factors and allergic sensitisation on the development of asthma and suggest that rhinoviruses are associated with asthma development in predisposed children.

RESUMO

Introduction Ultrasound-guided peripheral venous catheter placement (UG-PVCP) is a key skill for establishing intravenous access, especially in patients with anatomical challenges. Ultrasound is highly operator-dependent, and it is essential to ensure a sufficient level of competence when educating healthcare professionals. Competence can be acquired through simulation-based training (SBT) using phantoms or simulators. We developed a phantom for SBT, and in this study, we explore the phantom's usability and technical fidelity. Methods Novices with no experience in UG-PVCP and experts who routinely performed the procedure were asked to perform three ultrasound-guided catheter placement attempts on the phantom. Afterward, they were asked to complete a usability questionnaire consisting of 14 questions exploring the usability and fidelity of the phantom. Results Fifty-seven participants were included in the study: 29 novices and 28 experts. When assessing positive questions about the frequency of use, ease of use, integration of functionality, quickness to learn, and confidence level, the study showed a median score of 4 to 5 out of 5 in the two groups. The median was 1 to 2 out of 5 for negative questions assessing cumbersomeness, unnecessary complexity, and model inconsistency. In an additional comment textbox, one participant mentioned that the cannulation did not feel realistic but that it was good for cannulation practice. Conclusions We believe the phantom is suitable for an educational curriculum since it shows a high level of usability, scoring high on positive questions while scoring low on negative questions, and having high functional fidelity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) to peanut and its components may influence the clinical reactivity to peanut. Allergen-specific immunotherapy is known for modifying both IgE and IgG4. Peanut oral immunotherapy may influence these serological parameters. METHODS: Exploratory analyses of serological data from participants receiving peanut (Arachis hypogaea) allergen powder-dnfp (PTAH) and placebo in the double-blind, randomized, phase 3 PALISADE trial were conducted to evaluate potential relationships between peanut-specific and peanut component-specific (Ara h 1, Ara h 2, Ara h 3, Ara h 6, Ara h 8, and Ara h 9) IgE and IgG4 levels and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 269 participants (PTAH, n = 202; placebo, n = 67) were analyzed. No relationship was observed between specific IgE and IgG4 levels at screening and maximum tolerated peanut protein dose during screening or response status during exit double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC). In PTAH-treated participants, no relationship was observed between IgE and IgG4 levels at screening and maximum symptom severity during exit DBPCFC. Postscreening ratios (ie, postscreening/screening) in the PTAH group were significant at the end of updosing and exit visit for most components. Postscreening changes in specific IgE levels were more pronounced with PTAH versus placebo for most components. CONCLUSIONS: Specific IgE and IgG4 levels at screening are not correlated with screening or exit DBPCFC results, and are not predictive of clinical response to PTAH. Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) allergen powder-dnfp contains the relevant and immunodominant allergens, inducing immunological changes with the treatment. RESUMO

Terahertz (THz) technologies provide opportunities ranging from calibration targets for satellites and telescopes to communication devices and biomedical imaging systems. A main component will be broadband THz absorbers with switchability. However, optically switchable materials in THz are scarce and their modulation is mostly available at narrow bandwidths. Realizing materials with large and broadband modulation in absorption or transmission forms a critical challenge. This study demonstrates that conducting polymer-cellulose aerogels can provide modulation of broadband THz light with large modulation range from ≈ 13% to 91% absolute transmission, while maintaining specular reflection loss < -30 dB. The exceptional THz modulation is associated with the anomalous optical conductivity peak of conducting polymers, which enhances the absorption in its oxidized state. The study also demonstrates the possibility to reduce the surface hydrophilicity by simple chemical modifications, and shows that broadband absorption of the aerogels at optical frequencies enables de-frosting by solar-induced heating. These low-cost, aqueous solution-processable, sustainable, and bio-friendly aerogels may find use in next-generation intelligent THz devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. There are limited prospective long-term data regarding persistency and remission of AR. The objective of this study was to investigate the natural course of pollen-induced AR (pollen-AR) over 20 years, from childhood into early adulthood. METHODS: Data from 1137 subjects in the Barn/Children Allergi/Allergy Milieu Stockholm Epidemiologic birth cohort (BAMSE) with a completed questionnaire regarding symptoms, asthma, treatment with allergen immunotherapy (AIT) and results of allergen-specific IgE for inhalant allergens at 4, 8, 16 and 24 years were analyzed. Pollen-AR was defined as sneezing, runny, itchy or blocked nose; and itchy or watery eyes when exposed to birch and/or grass pollen in combination with allergen-specific IgE ≥0.35kUA/L to birch and/or grass. RESULTS: Approximately 75% of children with pollen-AR at 4 or 8 years had persistent disease up to 24 years, and 30% developed asthma. The probability of persistency was high already at low levels of pollen-specific IgE. The highest rate of remission from pollen-AR was seen between 16 and 24 years (21.5%); however, the majority remained sensitized. This period was also when pollen-specific IgE-levels stopped increasing and the average estimated annual incidence of pollen-AR decreased from 1.5% to 0.8% per year. CONCLUSION: Children with pollen-AR are at high risk of persistent disease for at least 20 years. Childhood up to adolescence seems to be the most dynamic period of AR progression. Our findings underline the close cross-sectional and longitudinal relationship between sensitization, AR and asthma.

RESUMO

Ionic thermoelectric materials can generate large thermal voltages under temperature gradients while also being low-cost and environmentally friendly. Many electrolytes with large Seebeck coefficients are reported in recent years, however, the mechanism of the thermal voltage is remained elusive. In this work, three types of polyelectrolytes are studied with different cations and identified a significant contribution to their thermal voltage originating from a concentration gradient. This conclusion is based on studies of the loss and gain of water upon temperature changes, variations in conductivity with water content and temperature, and the voltages induced by changes in water content. The results are analyzed by the "hopping mode" dynamics of charge transport in electrolytes. The hydration of different cations influences the water concentration gradient, which affects the barrier height and ion-induced potential in the electrodes. This work shows that the hydro-voltage in ionic thermoelectric devices can be one order of magnitude larger than the contribution from thermodiffusion-induced potentials, and becomes the main contributor to energy harvesting when implemented into ionic thermoelectric supercapacitors. Together with the rationalized theoretical discussion, this work clarifies the mechanism of thermal voltages in electrolytes and provides a new path for the development of ionic thermoelectric materials.

RESUMO

Background: The association between tobacco use and COVID-19 is controversial. During the early course of the pandemic, limited testing prevented studying a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. Objective: To examine the potential causal association between tobacco use and COVID-19 during the second wave (1 October 2020-30 June 2021) of the pandemic in Stockholm, Sweden. Methods: A population-based cohort study was conducted in the Stockholm region of Sweden, with information on tobacco use collected prior to the pandemic. Adjusted relative risks (RR) of COVID-19 and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated, contrasting current smokers and snus users to non-users of tobacco. Results: Compared with non-users of tobacco, current smokers had a lower risk of COVID-19 (RR 0.78, 95% CI = 0.75-0.81) and of hospitalisation for the disease. Current snus users had a higher risk of COVID-19. Heavy smokers and snus users had longer hospital stays than non-users of tobacco. Conclusion: Tobacco use may have a different impact on the risk of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 and the risk of developing severe clinical manifestations. Further research is needed to determine the underlying mechanisms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preschool wheeze is a risk factor for asthma development. However, the molecular mechanism behind a wheezing episode is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: Our aims were to assess the association of plasma proteins with acute preschool wheeze and to study the proteins with differential expression at the acute phase at revisit after 3 months. Additionally, to investigate the relationship between protein expression and clinical parameters. METHOD: We measured 92 inflammatory proteins in plasma and clinical parameters from 145 children during an episode of preschool wheeze (PW) and at the revisit after 3 months (PW-R, n = 113/145) and 101 healthy controls (HC) aged 6-48 months in the GEWAC cohort using the antibody-mediated proximity extension-based assay (Olink Proteomics, Uppsala). RESULTS: Of the 74 analysed proteins, 52 were differentially expressed between PW and HC. The expression profiles of the top 10 proteins, Oncostatin M (OSM), IL-10, IL-6, Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), AXIN1, CXCL10, SIRT2, TNFSF11, Tumour necrosis factor ß (TNF-ß) and CASP8, could almost entirely separate PW from HC. Five out of 10 proteins were associated with intake of oral corticosteroids (OCS) 24 h preceding blood sampling (OSM, CASP8, IL-10, TNF-ß and CXCL10). No differences in protein expression were seen between PWs with or without OCS in comparison to HC. At the revisit after 3 months, differential protein expressions were still seen between PW-R and HC for three (IL-10, SIRT2 and FGF21) of the 10 proteins. CONCLUSION: Our results contribute to unravelling potential immunopathological pathways shared between preschool wheeze and asthma.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) is related to childhood asthma, while normal values are lacking. We aimed to document serum EDN levels at 1 and 3 years in general and in non-atopic children, and explore if EDN levels differed by sex or were associated with preschool asthma at 3 years. METHODS: From the PreventADALL birth cohort, we included 1233 children with EDN analysed using ImmunoCAP at 1 and/or 3 years. Non-atopic children had no history of wheeze, asthma, allergic sensitization or atopic dermatitis. Preschool asthma was defined as having ≥3 episodes of bronchial obstruction between 2 and 3 years, plus doctor diagnosed asthma and/or asthma medication use by 3 years. The upper limit of normal (ULN) of EDN was defined as the 95th percentile. With Youden Index we calculated EDN cut-off levels for risk of preschool asthma. RESULTS: The overall median (ULN) EDN levels were 27.4 (121) µg/L at 1 year (n = 787), and 20.1 (87.8) µg/L at 3 years (n = 857). Non-atopic children had EDN levels of 24.0 (107) µg/L at 1 year (n = 147), and 17.3 (84.6) µg/L at 3 years (n = 173). EDN levels were higher in boys compared to girls; 32.0 (133) versus 24.5 (97.0) µg/L at 1 year, and 20.9 (96.3) versus 19.0 (72.4) µg/L at 3 years. Preschool asthma was observed in 109/892 (12.2%) children. Higher EDN levels at 1 (>26.7 µg/L) and 3 (≥20.5 µg/L) years were associated with preschool asthma; adjusted OR (95% CI) 2.20 (1.09, 4.41) and 4.68 (2.29, 9.55), respectively. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We report EDN values in early childhood, demonstrating higher levels at 1 compared to 3 years and in boys compared to girls at both ages. Higher EDN levels at both ages were associated with preschool asthma. However, EDN cut-off levels for preschool asthma were overall lower than the ULN of non-atopic children, limiting translation into clinical practice.

RESUMO

A wide range of nanophotonic applications rely on polarization-dependent plasmonic resonances, which usually requires metallic nanostructures that have anisotropic shape. This work demonstrates polarization-dependent plasmonic resonances instead by breaking symmetry via material permittivity. The study shows that molecular alignment of a conducting polymer can lead to a material with polarization-dependent plasma frequency and corresponding in-plane hyperbolic permittivity region. This result is not expected based only on anisotropic charge mobility but implies that also the effective mass of the charge carriers becomes anisotropic upon polymer alignment. This unique feature is used to demonstrate circularly symmetric nanoantennas that provide different plasmonic resonances parallel and perpendicular to the alignment direction. The nanoantennas are further tuneable via the redox state of the polymer. Importantly, polymer alignment could blueshift the plasma wavelength and resonances by several hundreds of nanometers, forming a novel approach toward reaching the ultimate goal of redox-tunable conducting polymer nanoantennas for visible light.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The use of molecular allergology has increasingly become common in the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases. However, there is still a lack of data on cat molecular allergens in adults. Therefore, we aimed to uncover the sensitization patterns to cat molecular allergens. METHODS: Participants were recruited from the West Asthma Sweden Study, a population-based study enriched with asthma subjects aged 16-75 years. Of 1872, 361 individuals were positive for cat dander immunoglobulin E and were further analysed for cat molecular allergens (Fel d 1/2/4/7). Sensitization patterns were classified as monosensitization, polysensitization, and concomitant sensitization, and were related to demographic and clinical measurements. RESULTS: Among cat-sensitized subjects, 84.2% were sensitized to secretoglobin, while 42.4% were sensitized to lipocalins. Nearly half of the subjects were monosensitized to Fel d 1. Polysensitization was observed in 20.2%, and concomitant sensitization to protein families was seen in 7.2%. Asthma prevalence, cat exposure, and rural living were associated with poly- and concomitant sensitization to protein families. Concomitant sensitization to single allergens was more common in those with asthma than in those without, while concomitant sensitization to both Fel d 1 and Fel d 4 was the most common pattern in individuals with asthma. Sensitization patterns also differed according to cat ownership and the degree of urbanization. CONCLUSION: Sensitization to molecular allergens was observed in 90.9% of cat-sensitized subjects and showed variations across participants' background characteristics and the presence of asthma. Identification of sensitization patterns to cat allergens might provide better characterization of cat-allergic subjects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence of overweight/obesity and socio-economic position (SEP) in children with immigrant background in Scandinavia. The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of overweight/obesity by immigrant background among children in Norway and to explore the role of SEP in explaining differences in weight status. METHODS: Anthropometric data from 8,858 children (age 8.3 years) from the population-based Norwegian Childhood Growth Study were used. Information about immigrant background, country of origin, and parental education (used as an indicator of SEP) were provided by Statistics Norway. For children with immigrant background, regional background was determined based on country of origin. Prevalence ratios (PR) were estimated for overweight/obesity and weight-to-height-ratio (WHtR) ≥ 0.5 by immigration and regional background, using generalized estimating equation log-binominal models adjusting for sex, age, survey year (model 1), residential area, population density (model 2) and parental education (model 3). RESULTS: Children with immigrant background had a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity and WHtR ≥ 0.5 than non-immigrant background children. Adjusted for parental education, children with an immigrant background from Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia except South-Asia, and Africa had a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity [PR: 1.37 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10-1.72), 1.28 (1.05-1.57), 1.47 (1.13-1.91), respectively] than children with a non-immigrant background. Children originating from Asia except South-Asia had a higher prevalence of WHtR ≥ 0.5 (PR: 1.64, CI: 1.25-2.15) compared to non-immigrant background children. The adjustment for parental education did not substantially change the results. CONCLUSION: Children with immigrant background had higher prevalence of overweight/obesity than non-immigrant background children. The difference varied according to region of origin but not substantially according to parental education. There is a need for culturally acceptable preventative measures targeting the parents of immigrant background children.

RESUMO

Sesame is a potentially potent allergen that can trigger skin, gastrointestinal, and respiratory tract symptoms, and anaphylaxis. Only 20% to 30% of sesame-allergic children develop tolerance. The prevalence of sesame allergy depends on local diets and ranges from 0.1% to 0.9%. A high risk of accidental exposure to sesame has resulted in mandatory food labeling in many countries. More than half of patients with sesame allergy are also allergic to peanut/tree nuts. Serum-specific IgE testing with a quantitative Ses i 1 component can be performed safely and has higher clinical specificity and better positive predictive value for oral food challenge (OFC) than whole sesame extract or skin prick testing (SPT). Compared with SPT or OFC, in vitro Ses i 1 testing requires no special techniques and carries no risk of reactions. Diagnosis of suspected sesame allergy begins with a thorough history and physical examination. A positive sesame extract test (≥0.1 kUA /L) should prompt further testing. In patients with a high probability of reacting, results of component testing may facilitate a decision about performing an OFC. In a Japanese study of OFC and Ses i 1, there was a 5% probability of a positive OFC with Ses i 1 sIgE levels <0.13 kUA /L, and a 50% probability of a positive OFC with levels >32.0 kUA /L. Most patients could safely consume sesame if sIgE levels were <0.13 kUA /L. Ses i 1 testing can be used to guide appropriate management (avoidance, emergency medication, and oral immunotherapy).

RESUMO

Dynamically tunable reflective structural colors are attractive for reflective displays (electronic paper). However, it is challenging to tune a thin layer of structural color across the full red-green-blue (RGB) basis set of colors at video rates and with long-term stability. In this work, this is achieved through a hybrid cavity built from metal-insulator-metal (MIM) "nanocaves" and an electrochromic polymer (PProDOTMe2 ). The reflective colors are modulated by electrochemically doping/dedoping the polymer. Compared with traditional subpixel-based systems, this hybrid structure provides high reflectivity (>40%) due to its "monopixel" nature and switches at video rates. The polymer bistability helps deliver ultralow power consumption (≈2.5 mW cm-2 ) for video display applications and negligible consumption (≈3 µW cm-2 ) for static images, compatible with fully photovoltaic powering. In addition, the color uniformity of the hybrid material is excellent (over cm-2 ) and the scalable fabrication enables large-area production.

RESUMO

Allergy is defined clinically, by symptoms on allergen exposure. A patient is considered sensitized when allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) antibody can be detected in serum or plasma or a skin test result is positive, even if no clinical reaction has been experienced. Sensitization should be regarded as a requisite and risk factor for allergy but is not synonymous with an allergy diagnosis. To provide a correct allergy diagnosis, test results regarding allergen-sIgE must always be considered in view of the patient's case history and clinical observations. Correct assessment of a patient's sensitization to specific allergens relies on the use of accurate and quantitative methods for detection of sIgE antibodies. The evolution of sIgE immunoassays toward higher analytical performance and the use of different cutoff levels in the interpretation of test results sometimes cause confusion. Earlier versions of sIgE assays offered a limit of quantitation of 0.35 kilounits of sIgE per liter (kUA/L), which also became an established cutoff level for a positive test result in the clinical use of the assays. Current sIgE assays are capable of reliably measuring sIgE levels as low as 0.1 kUA/L and can thereby demonstrate sensitization in cases in which previous assays could not. When the outcome of sIgE test results is evaluated, it is critically important to distinguish between the analytical data as such and their clinical interpretation. Even though sIgE may be present in the absence of symptoms of allergy, available information suggests that sIgE concentrations between 0.1 kUA/L and 0.35 kUA/L may be clinically relevant in some individuals, not least among children, although this should be further evaluated for various allergies. Moreover, it is becoming widely adopted that nondichotomous interpretation of sIgE levels may offer a diagnostic benefit compared with using a predefined cutoff level.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Allergic disease is common. The aim of this study was to look at the change in asthma and rhinitis over time and to characterise factors contributing to remission and persistence of disease. METHODS: This cohort study included 255 individuals with or without asthma and or rhinitis that participated in a population survey and a follow-up 10 years later. The participants were tested for allergic sensitisation, total IgE, multiplex allergen component analysis and type-2 inflammatory markers: exhaled nitric oxide (FE NO), eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) and eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN). RESULTS: Of the 132 healthy individuals, 112 remained healthy, 16 developed rhinitis, 4 asthma and rhinitis over the 10 years. Out of 82 subjects with rhinitis, 26 went into remission, 53 remained unchanged and 3 developed asthma in addition to rhinitis. None of the 41 participants with asthma and rhinitis went into remission. Subjects with persistent rhinitis and asthma had higher levels of total IgE (odds ratio [OR] 95% confidence interval [CI]: 6.16 [3.05-12.5]) at baseline and after 10 years, and FE NO and ECP at baseline (OR per log unit increase, 95% CI 5.21 [1.20-22.7] and 6.32 [1.52-26.4], respectively), compared with those that remained healthy. Subjects with persistent rhinitis were more likely to be sensitised to grass pollen and had higher total IgE levels than those that went into remission. Individuals with persistent asthma were more likely to be sensitised to tree pollen and furry animals than those with only persistent rhinitis (OR 95% CI: 3.50 [1.29-9.49] and 6.73 [2.00-22.6], respectively). CONCLUSION: IgE sensitisation and total IgE levels are associated with the persistence of rhinitis and asthma. Participants with persistent allergic disease had higher levels of allergen sensitisation and type 2 inflammation markers at baseline than those who remained healthy.

RESUMO

Plant vasculature transports molecules that play a crucial role in plant signaling including systemic responses and acclimation to diverse environmental conditions. Targeted controlled delivery of molecules to the vascular tissue can be a biomimetic way to induce long distance responses, providing a new tool for the fundamental studies and engineering of stress-tolerant plants. Here, a flexible organic electronic ion pump, an electrophoretic delivery device, for controlled delivery of phytohormones directly in plant vascular tissue is developed. The c-OEIP is based on polyimide-coated glass capillaries that significantly enhance the mechanical robustness of these microscale devices while being minimally disruptive for the plant. The polyelectrolyte channel is based on low-cost and commercially available precursors that can be photocured with blue light, establishing much cheaper and safer system than the state-of-the-art. To trigger OEIP-induced plant response, the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) in the petiole of intact Arabidopsis plants is delivered. ABA is one of the main phytohormones involved in plant stress responses and induces stomata closure under drought conditions to reduce water loss and prevent wilting. The OEIP-mediated ABA delivery triggered fast and long-lasting stomata closure far away from the delivery point demonstrating systemic vascular transport of the delivered ABA, verified delivering deuterium-labeled ABA.

RESUMO

Smoking has been linked with both increased and decreased risk of COVID-19, prompting the hypothesis of a protective role of nicotine in the pathogenesis of the disease. Studies of the association between use of smokeless tobacco and COVID-19 would help refining this hypothesis. We analysed data from 424,386 residents in the Stockholm Region, Sweden, with information on smoking and smokeless tobacco (snus) use prior to the pandemic obtained from dental records. Diagnoses of COVID-19 between February and October 2020 were obtained from health-care registers. We estimated the risk of receiving a diagnosis of COVID-19 for current smokers and for current snus users relative to non-users of tobacco, adjusting for potential confounders (aRR). The aRR of COVID -19 was elevated for current snus users (1.09 ;95%CI = 0.99-1.21 among men and 1.15; 95%CI = 1.00-1.33 among women). The risk for women consuming more than 1 can/day was twice as high as among non-users of tobacco. Current smoking was negatively associated with risk of COVID-19 (aRR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.61-0.75); including hospital admission (aRR = 0.60; 95% CI = 0.47-0.76) and intensive care (aRR = 0.43; 95% CI = 0.21-0.89). The hypothesis of a protective effect of tobacco nicotine on COVID-19 was not supported by the findings. The negative association between smoking and COVID-19 remains unexplained.

RESUMO

Cellulose opens for sustainable materials suitable for radiative cooling thanks to inherent high thermal emissivity combined with low solar absorptance. When desired, solar absorptance can be introduced by additives such as carbon black. However, such materials still shows high thermal emissivity and therefore performs radiative cooling that counteracts the heating process if exposed to the sky. Here, this is addressed by a cellulose-carbon black composite with low mid-infrared (MIR) emissivity and corresponding suppressed radiative cooling thanks to a transparent IR-reflecting indium tin oxide coating. The resulting solar heater provides opposite optical properties in both the solar and thermal ranges compared to the cooler material in the form of solar-reflecting electrospun cellulose. Owing to these differences, exposing the two materials to the sky generated spontaneous temperature differences, as used to power an ionic thermoelectric device in both daytime and nighttime. The study characterizes these effects in detail using solar and sky simulators and through outdoor measurements. Using the concept to power ionic thermoelectric devices shows thermovoltages of >60 mV and 10 °C temperature differences already at moderate solar irradiance of ≈400 W m-2 .

RESUMO

The assessment and management of patients with asthma is challenging because of the complexity of the underlying inflammatory mechanisms and heterogeneity of their clinical presentation. Optimizing disease management requires therapy individualization that should rely on reliable biomarkers to unravel the phenotypes and endotypes of asthma. The secretory activity and turnover of eosinophils, as assessed by measuring eosinophil-derived proteins, may provide an accurate and complementary tool that mirrors the eosinophil activation status. Emerging evidence suggests that eosinophil-derived neurotoxin has considerable potential as a precision medicine biomarker. In this review, we explore the suitability of eosinophil-derived neurotoxin as a biomarker in asthma management, with particular emphasis on its clinical significance in the management of both pediatric and adult populations.
