RESUMO

PURPOSE: There is an important need for interprofessional practice (IPP) between speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and classroom teachers (CTs) in mainstream schools to support student outcomes. This mixed methods systematic review aimed to synthesize existing literature to describe the experiences of IPP between SLPs and CTs in mainstream schools. METHOD: A systematic review protocol was utilized to conduct a comprehensive search of six databases (PubMed Central, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL EBSCO, ERIC, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global) using key words related to the research question. A total of 1,876 unique studies were retrieved. Of these, 18 studies were identified as relevant to the research question, as they described the experiences of IPP between SLPs and CTs. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the quantitative and qualitative studies. RESULTS: Six main themes describing IPP experiences were identified: (1) what are you bringing to the collaboration table? (2) putting the value in collaboration, (3) sharing is collaborating, (4) the nature of collaboration varies, (5) the educational context matters, and (6) influences to collaboration beyond professional control. CONCLUSIONS: IPP between SLPs and CTs is complex, with various facilitators and barriers to IPP emerging within the education context. Competencies for SLPs and CTs related to having a shared understanding, adequate communication, and building relationships with each other help support IPP in schools. The utilization of a relationship-centered care approach between SLPs and CTs is also important to foster and support student outcomes. Manual small-incision cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in ophthalmology. Most cataract surgeries are performed under local anaesthesia. Peribulbar or retrobulbar anaesthesia is commonly used to achieve analgesia and akinesia during surgery but it has various complications. Our aim was to study patient comfort and surgeon's perspective in terms of patient cooperation in MSICS under topical anaesthesia using only proparacaine 0.5% eye drops without any periocular block or intracameral drug. Also to popularise Topical MSICS similar to Topical Phacoemulsification. A prospective analytical study of 33 patients who underwent MSICS surgery from March 2022 to June 2022 using Topical proparacaine eye drops 0.5% was done and patient's comfort and surgeon's perspective in terms of patient cooperation was studied on a scale of 1-5. Out of 33 patients who underwent surgery, the average comfort score based on patient feedback was 3.45± 0.96 and average patient cooperation score based on surgeon assessment was 3.42 ± 1.07 on a scale of 1-5. We concluded that MSICS using only topical proparacaine 0.5% eye drops, can provide sufficient patient comfort and can avoid complications related to peribulbar anaesthesia. Hence it can be used in large scale cataract surgeries and also provides economical utilisation of resources, lesser complications and early post operative recovery without compromising surgical outcome.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate if a single, early learning experience in an aged care setting could influence speech-language pathology students': (1) attitudes towards older people; (2) confidence in communicating with older people; and (3) career aspirations in aged care. METHOD: Ninety first-year undergraduate speech-language pathology students participated in a single visit to an aged care community centre. Students participated in recreational activities alongside older people and engaged in conversation. Before and after the visit, students completed surveys which examined their attitudes towards older people (UCLA Geriatrics Attitudes Scale) and self-perceived communication confidence. A Learning Reactionnaire, examining satisfaction with the experience and career aspirations, was completed post-visit. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. Qualitative data were analysed using inductive content analysis. RESULT: Students demonstrated positive changes in their attitudes towards older people and increased communication confidence. Students reported increased interest in future employment in aged care. High satisfaction towards the learning experience was reported. CONCLUSION: These preliminary findings indicate that a single, early learning experience in an aged care setting can positively shape the attitudes and self-perceived communication skills of first-year speech-language pathology students and help foster interest in pursuing a career in aged care.
