RESUMO

Amorphous alumina is highly transparent across the visible spectrum, making it a promising candidate for low-loss waveguiding at short wavelengths. However, previous alumina waveguide demonstrations in the visible region have focused on low- to moderate-confinement waveguides, where the diffuse mode reduces the design flexibility and integration density of photonic integrated circuits. Here, we have developed a high-quality etch mask and a highly selective BCl3 plasma etch, allowing etching of amorphous alumina waveguides up to 800 nm thick. Using this process, we have fabricated waveguides using an alumina film grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) which are the lowest-loss high-confinement waveguides for blue light to date: we achieve single-mode propagation losses of 0.8 dB/cm at a propagation wavelength of 450 nm.

RESUMO

We report on the generation of correlated photon pairs in AlGaAs-on-insulator (AlGaAs-OI) waveguides through nonlinear spontaneous four-wave-mixing (SFWM). Our measurements reveal an SFWM pair generation efficiency of ∼0.096×1012pairs/(sW2) at a wavelength of 1550 nm. This is one of the highest efficiencies achieved to date for integrated SFWM sources. A maximal coincidence-to-accidental ratio of ∼122 is measured. A spectral characterization of the device's pair emission at the quantum level demonstrates a broad generation bandwidth of 2.0 THz, which is important for frequency multiplexing applications. Our results indicate that AlGaAs-OI is an efficient material platform for integrated quantum photonics at telecom wavelengths.

RESUMO

The effect of engineering the dispersion of AlGaAs-on-insulator (AlGaAs-OI) waveguides on supercontinuum generation is investigated at telecom wavelengths. The pronounced effect the waveguide width has on the nonlinear dynamics governing the supercontinua is systematically analyzed and the coherence of the spectra verified with numerical simulations. Using dispersion engineered AlGaAs-OI waveguides, broadband supercontinua were readily obtained for pulse energies of [Formula: see text] and a device length of only 3 mm. The results presented here, further understanding of the design and fabrication of this novel platform and describe the soliton and dispersive wave dynamics responsible for supercontinuum generation. This study showcases the potential of AlGaAs-OI for exploring fundamental physics and realizing highly efficient, compact, nonlinear devices.

RESUMO

The thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) of photonic integrated waveguides fabricated on silicon-rich silicon nitride grown by plasma-enanched chemical vapor deposition is characterized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The TOC is found to increase linearly with the fractional composition of silicon over a range from that of silicon nitride to a-Si. This finding is significant for improving the power efficiency of thermally tuned photonic integrated circuits.

RESUMO

The transfer printing of aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) microdisk resonators onto a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide platform is demonstrated. The integrated resonators exhibit loaded ${Q}$Q-factors reaching $ 4 \times {10^4} $4×104, and the vertical assembly approach allows selective coupling to different spatial mode families. The hybrid platform's nonlinearity is characterized by four-wave mixing with a measured nonlinear coefficient of $ \gamma = 325\;{({\rm Wm})^{ - 1}} $γ=325(Wm)-1, with the devices demonstrating minimal two-photon absorption and free-carrier absorption losses that are inherent to SOI at telecommunications wavelengths.

RESUMO

Second-harmonic generation is demonstrated in AlGaAs-on-insulator waveguides at telecom wavelengths. Using this material platform, a maximum internal normalized efficiency of 1202±55% W-1 cm-2 is achieved for a 100 fs pulsed excitation wavelength at 1560 nm. This finding is important towards enabling new chip-scale devices for sensing, metrology, and quantum optics.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the safety and efficacy of in-bore magnetic resonance-guided prostate biopsy (MRGB) for detection of clinically significant disease (CSD) in untreated men with known or suspected prostate cancer (PCa). METHODS: 512 patients underwent multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (Mp-MRI) followed by MRGB at one of three centers in this IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant, retrospective study. Exclusion criteria were prior prostate cancer therapy and incomplete Mp-MRI (n = 51). Patients (n = 461) were analyzed in two subcohorts: no prior PCa (NP) (n = 381) and active surveillance (AS) (n = 80). Detection rates of PCa and CSD (Gleason Score ≥3 + 4) were calculated and compared among subcohorts and by Mp-MRI assessment grade. Logistic regression was performed to identify predictors for detection of PCa and CSD. RESULTS: Mean patient age was 66 years, median prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was 7.5 ng/mL, and median prostate volume was 54 cc. A mean of 1.7 targets was sampled per gland. Significant adverse events (urosepsis and hematuria with obstruction) occurred in 1% (5/461). Overall PCa detection rates were 51% per patient (233/461) and 37% per lesion (282/757). 65% (151/233) of men with detected PCa had CSD. Per-patient PCa detection rates in the NP and AS subcohorts were 47% (178/381) and 69% (55/80), respectively, significantly higher in the AS group (p < 0.001). CSD was detected in 10% (47/451), 43% (96/225) and 84% (68/81) of lesions with Mp-MRI assessment grades of 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Older age, higher PSA, and lower prostate volume predicted MRGB detection of CSD (OR 1.07 and p = 0.003, OR 1.1 and p = 0.014, and OR 0.98 and p = 0.032, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: In-bore MRGB is safe and high yield for detection of CSD.

RESUMO

The pharmocodynamics of single injections of florfenicol in yearling loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) were determined. Eight juvenile loggerhead sea turtles weighing 1.25 (+/- 0.18) kg were divided into two groups. Four animals received 30 mg/kg of florfenicol i.v., and four received the same dose i.m. Plasma florfenicol concentrations were analyzed by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. After the i.v. dose, there was a biphasic decline in plasma florfenicol concentration. The initial steep phase from 3 min to 1 hr had a half-life of 3 min, and there was a longer slow phase of elimination, with a half-life that ranged from 2 to 7.8 hr among turtles. The volume of distribution varied greatly and ranged from 10.46 to -60 L/kg. Clearance after the i.v. dose was 3.6-6.3 L/kg/hr. After the i.m. injection, there was a peak within 30 min of 1.4-5.6 microg/ml, and florfenicol was thereafter eliminated with a half-life of 3.2-4.3 hr. With either route, florfenicol plasma concentrations were below the minimum inhibitory concentrations for sensitive bacteria within 1 hr. Florfenicol does not appear to be a practical antibiotic in sea turtles when administered at these doses.
